Diner Reviews
  • "I came for happy hour. Food was great (so was the price) but service was really slow. It took awhile before our server acknowledged we were there. No one checked on us after our food arrived. We saw a few waiters breaking for lunch and a few others roaming around talking story with other diners. I visited again (later that day) for dinner. Food was outstanding. Service still lacking. In fact, service up until food arrived was great. Then the restaurant filled up and no one checked on us. Dessert menu and dessert itself took a really long time (at least 20 min). My guests also agreed service was slow. On a separate note for opentable, I indicated in notes that it was one of my guest'a birthday. The restaurant did not acknowledge this."

  • "Eaten lunch & dinner several times & it's always consistently good! My guest said, "Food had a familiar taste", when referring to the salad she had. It was because of 1 ingredient Wade used that reminded her of her favorite food, sushi. It was comment I had previously made about reminding me of something my Mom used to make. That's the magic, Wade takes familiar ingredients and flavors and incorporates them into contemporary creations."

  • "Excellent service, visually-impacting food that tastes as fresh and lively as it appears. Dessert of lilikoi delights (in a glass so you could see all the treats within) was outstanding! I plan to return this week to try more of the amazing menu items. The jidori chicken appetizer at lunch was crispy and light all at once with so much flavor, it must be repeated soon to see if this is just as fantastic on my next visit!"

  • "Great food, great service, great experience. Altogether another enjoyable meal at MW Restaurant. Fine dining made more accessible in a relaxed atmosphere. Upscale comfort food done right. The execution was spot on once again. One of the best new restaurants to have opened in the last year on Oahu."

  • "Needed last minute dinner ideas. Did the usual yelp search, but nothing caught my eye. Decided to see what would be available for reservations at 9:30 pm on OpenTable. My husband and I enjoyed it the last time we tried, and we wanted to treat his parents to something nice (coming from a play). They close at 10 and I'm sure they were anxious to get us out, but it never showed. Plus, we are fast eaters & when we enjoy our food, we don't speak. Lol. Apps: Calamari & Poke Nachos=delicious! We probably ended up with the rest of the calamari bc it was a huge portion. I got the mocha crusted opakapaka AGAIN. Best idea ever. Desserts: strawberry cheesecake & I think...brulee? Anyway, SO GOOD! And we each got a small bag of cookies FOR FREE!"

  • "Has great potential of becoming a great restaurant . Food is tasty, but could increase in portion size for better value of your dollar. Nicely presented. Would consider coming back."

  • "We had a great dinner and my guest was very impressed with the wine list. Service was terrific. We sat along the wall on the banquette. The rest of the room was well lit, but the row of tables along the wall was very poorly lit. I think those lights must be on a dimmer and we had to read the menu with our cell phones as light. Room temperature was good, Noise level was a little high, but we could still carry on a conversation. The light at the bar was very bright. Don't know if all this was planned or if the lights were just not adjusted on Sunday. I am a designer and have designed many restaurants. Maybe this is the new style in lighting, but it could have been more comfortable. All in all, it was a good experience and I will return."

  • "My friend was visiting Honolulu for the day. We had some spa treatments and were planning to have a late lunch at 3:30 pm. We didn't know MW has a happy hour between 2 - 5pm. We both ordered the signature dish "Mochi Encrusted Opakapaka". The fish was served over somen noodles with a side serving of assorted Korean ban chan. The fish was so crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful in the inside. We also ordered the poke pot stickers and homemade spam musubis. Both pupu dishes were $5 each. What a deal! To finish off the meal, we had the donuts with chocolate sauce. It is actually donut holes that are so fluffy that it is like eating little clouds. Everything were so delicious!!! Will definitely go back for more!"

  • "We finally made a reservation on a timely basis and got in to MW! Enjoyed ever bit of our experience from the friendly staff to the great touch of a gift of cookies as we left! How great is that and plus they were so good. Whomever thought of it was a genius cause you go home and while still talking about dinner, you have cookies to end your evening. Our opakapaka and katsu dishes were excellent and you have to have the donuts for dessert -- WOW!! Can't wait to go back as we saw so many other dishes we wanted to try!"

  • "From valet, to the surprise menu & dessert for our 21st Anniversary, everything & everyone was exceptional! Jason kept that tasty toast & ailoi coming & Terry was the perfect waiter with superb recommendations! The filet & foie gras is amazing as we're the Thai Rum drinks and outstanding Syrah Terry suggested. We started with the ceviche and can honestly say it's the best we've ever had! Ended with 2 delicious desserts, a banana special and the chocolate crunch, crazy tasty! Thank you for a memorable evening, we will be back soon!"

  • "Casual new restaurant by Alan Wong alumni, with a strong emphasis on the food and ingredients. Perhaps a bit too noisy, this Reflects a trend in dining where the setting is secondary; what matters is on the plate. Wait staff is very knowledgeable, every dish is described as it hits the table. Homage paid to local ingredients; fish includes onaga, the one fish I miss on the mainland, opakapaka, nairagai. Local produce and even house made Chinese sausage or lop cheung, show how serious the owners are. Excellent wine selections include stellar choices from Germany and France. Very good addition to local dining scene; perhaps too ambitious for a local audience."

  • "We wanted to try something comparable to Alan Wong's or Nobu's. What a find MW was! The food was excellent and so was the staff who were knowledgable of what was being served and attentive to our needs. A must go if you are looking for excellent dining!!!"

  • "Food was great as usual. Thries the fried chix appetizer, surprising .. square white and dark meat chunks pressed together and deep fried (size of a golf ball) was ono... Oxtail, pork belly and Corned beef soup was ono as well..."

  • "We are 2 senior ladies, celebrating a birthday. We were quite early, but immediately and cordially seated. B'day lady was touched by the personalized menu, immediately getting teary! Ordered several appetizer plates and all were delicious and attractive. Leftovers were individually boxed (no foam clamshells with food running into each other). We knew we could not eat another bite but birthday lady. demolished her choc candy bar dessert and had to take a keepsake photo of the personalized Msge on the plate. My deconstructed banana cream pie disappeared as well. Take-home bag of cookies was icing on the cake! Classy "happy birthday" touches were perfection! No singing waiters, thank you!"

  • "The grilled Twin Bridges asparagus with hot bacon dressing was beautifully presented and so delicious. Also had their signature mochi crusted fish - very good. The brulee topped layered dessert is fantastic. Looking forward to the next time."

  • "If you're looking to hit one of the famous names in Honolulu to say you did it, than more power to you. If you want better food than those places, with better service, and more comfortable ambience, than go to MW. I took my wife and 2 older daughters for our anniversary last week, after having been to some of the "other" 4 $ "hot" places while on vacation, and wished I would have just saved my money and gone to MW more than once! The food was unique and well prepared, the entire staff was very welcoming and had spot-on recommendations, and they all added little personal touches for our special dinner that made the evening perfect. We were never rushed and we all had different things, and everything turned out better than expected!"

  • "Upon walking in, the design of the restaurant was appealing, upscale and modern. We ordered pork belly buns and char siu and foie won ton apps - both looked very appetizing however the flavors were sadly muddled. The won ton filling just seemed like some kind of mystery meat and the scallion/ginger sauce with the pork took away from the typical butter-like flavor of the pork belly. Miso honey glazed butterfish was good...if only it didn't have so many conflicting flavors from the kim chee, taegu and other pickled green on the plate. Dessert was...different. Deconstructed strawberry cheesecake included ume stuffed strawberries, berries dipped in li hing, house made graham and cheesecake filling. Again, flavors did not agree with each other."

  • "First time dining there, the service was excellent. Best crab cakes I ever had, fried chicken appetizer was very good. I had their ribeye which was good but not outstanding, my wife loved her braised short ribs. You must save room for dessert! Chocolate banana cream pie and the MW donuts with chocolate fondue was fantastic."

  • "It was my 2nd anniversary and I decided to take my wife to MW. I heard a great many things about this place, all of then being good. So, the restaurant staff were extremely friendly, and they even helped me make the evening more special by accommodating the roses I bought and setting them on the table before we got there. They also customized the menu with our names and the occasion, and even customized the desert we ordered. Now on to the food. The food is terrific! There was so many great mixtures of flavors in every bite, it was like going on a different adventure every bite! I have to say the entree and the desert were to die for! Such greatness in both dishes!"

  • "Overall the food was very good. The exception was my kalbi short ribs which were tough. My friends loved their fish. Service was a little uneven and I had to ask the manager to get me my check at the end because the waiter was busy with other patrons. The staff was very polite and friendly - just a little slip up here and there which can be easily corrected.Desserts were excellent, and the small bag of homemade cookies to take home was a nice touch. I would go again."

  • "I have been trying to broaden my culinary horizons and Chef Wayne at MW Restaurant has really helped me push my limits. The local beet salad is a favorite but also the asparagus salad is awesome even though it is not normally something I would order. I usually hate how fatty duck is but his duck confit was sweet and savory and perhaps the most delicious thing I have tasted in my life, and it was a lunch special! Their tasting menu from 2-5 is awesome....the butterfish and UNAGI arancino is to killer. "

  • "For entrees we had the mochi crusted Opakapaka and the steamed Chinese style Onaga. The Onaga was raw in the middle. They offered to make a new one. We didn't want to eat our dinners one at a time. Appetizer asparagus lacked the vinaigrette although it did have bacon pieces of 'bacon vinaigrette.' Other appetizers were fine - salad and arancini. The room is fine but the lighting is unpleasant overhead only. "

  • "Special birthday lunch with friends, so surprised to see the birthday gal presented with a Birthday greeting and her name printed on the top of her menu! She also got a small bag of the house fresh baked cookies when we were done. "

  • "Food is amazing. Favorites were pork belly bao appetizer and donut dessert. Can't find fault with anything we ate. It was all delicious and liked the way the server explained each dish as it was served. Kenji was our waiter and he was excellent and helpful in making suggestions. Loved all the small touches, like the bag of cookies for everyone, which by the way were delicious. Also we were celebrating a special occasion and they gave the honoree a small box with a chocolate cake. Would recommend to anyone that loves good food. Just be sure to save room for dessert. They are to die for! A chef friend recommended this restaursnt and he was spot on!"

  • "We went for lunch. The crab cake sandwich (w/local greens on the side) was mostly crab and not filler. As a result it didn't stick together that well but I'd rather have more crab and have it fall apart than less crab. I would order this again. The lobster curry bisque was VERY rich with chunks of lobster in it. And yes I was gauche and sopped up soup with my bread. One lunch partner loved the ramen with short ribs in it. Another loved the oxtail soup with 3 different meat types and an asian flavored broth. We'll be back. Valet Parking was $4 without tip so take that into consideration when planning to eat there."

  • "Flew over special from Kauai to try this restaurant. Everything we had was amazing!! Here are some of the absolute must have's: jadori fried chicken, pork belly bao buns, crab cakes, seafood gumbo, and ahi poke nachos to name a few. Jennifer had awesome recommendations and provided impeccable service. He will return over and over again. Can't wait to go back!! Thanks Wade and Michelle."

  • "Celebrated a friends birthday, four of us.....the lunch menu had so many interesting things to try, it was hard to decide what to order. Appetizers were good and the portions were good. Lunch was very delicious, everybody enjoyed what they ordered. Desserts were ono also. They made it very special for the birthday person, with their name on the menu they got to take home, also "happy birthday" written on the dessert plate, and a special little cookie bag she got to take home. Can't wait to go again and try the other things on the menu."

  • "What a wonderful little restaurant. I knew it was good but wasn't expecting how good it was. We started with the raised beef lettuce wrap. It was so good I didn't want to share. Our mains we had the mochi crusted fish, pork chop, and oxtail soup. No mistakes on any of those dishes. Let's not forget the deconstructed banana cream pie. It was made fresh so there was a little wait but well worth it. "

  • "I ate the local beets salad and you can really taste the freshness of the ingredients. The burger is phenomenal...pipikaula, do I need to say anymore! I have also eaten there during there happy hour and the fried unagi and butterfish with the nori-tsuru-dani is off the scale and cheap from 2pm to 5pm. They even have spam musubi's topped with a quail egg, and homemade spam. I almost ate the plate!"

  • "The food here was excellent! It is best to make an early reservation as it gets very crowded. The appetizers were generous size portions and exceptionally good. Their menu is not very large but they do have a good selection to choose from and everything is fresh. They also use local produce in their dishes. The entrees were prepared perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. Great dessert menu to finish off the meal."

  • "The food was delicious; However although the server was polite, service was slow, which is not good for a workday lunch. The busboy needs more training; Reaching his arm right across a customers face to serve the focaccia was poor service."

  • "If you remotely consider yourself a "foodie" then MW is clearly a find. Unlike other restaurants that shine brightly for a very short time, I will bet money that MW will remain a go-to place for decades. The often talked about unagi and butterfish arancini does not disappoint. Those hot crisp balls of goodness were filled with warm bits of butterfish and unagi. Bite into one along with a bit of the pickled kelp served with it and you will understand the meaning of the Japanese "umami". It was so good that we were compelled to order another round again. Nuff said. Sorry....one last thing....loved having those MW chocolate chip cookies to take home as a scrumptious reminder of our outstanding dining experience the night before."

  • "Good food, excellent presentation....service is slow and dis-organized. Does not look as if they are short staffed, just looks dis-organized."
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "Returning to MW Restaurant was enjoyable, as expected. The mochi crusted opakapaka is my favorite and they readily changed the somen to rice, to accommodate my gluten sensitivity. In fact, since I had informed them about my gluten concern before hand on the Open Table reservation, the waiter had checked with the kitchen ahead of time to be able to make recommendations regarding the menu. Service was outstanding although though the large number of wait staff in the relatively small space is a little distracting, or maybe it just seemed that way since we were sitting close to the open kitchen. Saving the best for last, the Lilikoi Brulee was out of this world---definitely the best dessert I've ever had. Worth going there just for this!"
