  • "We had a 7 pm reservation on Saturday night. The restaurant called and left their number for a call back reconfirmation. I called back and re-confirmed our reservation. When we arrived, they had NO record of our reservation. The check in said it must have been an Open Table screw up, When I told them they had called me and I had called them back they just shrugged. Such is life. The food was good and the wait staff and the chef were fantastic. We will go back."

  • "Went for brunch with my family. Ordered a mushroom pizza for the kids which came out very greasy and salty. We also ordered two different dishes of mussels and they came out very salty as well. With the many choices of restaurants in the area, I don't think we would be going back anymore."

  • "Sat outside took close to 10 min to be acknowledged by a surly waiter. The moved inside, given a new waiter, who was not told that we had been seated outside and ordered drinks at happy hour prices. Food came out fast with one dish and bread being brought to us by the chef. Kale Cesar very good, muscle were good. Personal pizzas were finished improperly but yummy."

  • "Mussel Bar is a close by spot that is both convenient and fun to go to. The food is pretty decent, but appetizers and salads turn us off for their small portion sizes. The Chopped Salad portion could fit in my hand, and while tasty, keeps me from ordering it again. Last visit we had a Lamb Meatball, and while tasty as well, $11 for one small to medium meatball is a bit steep. Mussels are always good, and they make a decent burger. Fries are good, but often underdone and floppy. Dipping sauces for the fries are excellent. The Short Ribs are a good, not great dish thanks to over-salting. Service is often spotty. Recently, bread was not offered until Mussels were served. Main courses are often served before appetizers are finished."

  • "hree out of four of us had never eaten at Mussel Bar & Grille, and we were meeting there because we wanted to try a restaurant in the Clarendon-Ballston area and one of us goes there regularly. What an enjoyable evening! When confirming the reservation we asked for certain accommodations; when we ordered, two of us asked for slight changes to a dish. Each request was handled with ease. Our waitress was training someone, and both were pleasant, helpful, and appropriately friendly. Our waitress recommended a draft beer, noting that it was on special during happy hour -- we liked it so much that we stuck with beer (rather than switch to wine, as we normally do). Overall, Mussel Bar & Grille made a great impression. We'll return!"

  • "Absolutely LOVED the food - party of 4 - we had calamari and poached shrimp for appetizers, then one of each: steak, crab cake, tuna, and my favorite the mussels with tomatoes! We also had grits and truffle parm frites. Unfortunately my Husband's glass of wine was dumped in the front of our friend by the busser - to no apology, and we had to ask for a refill. Then we had to ask that it be taken off the check. It took forever to get our drinks (although I would highly recommend the gin/cucumber "Suburban"), to get dishes cleared, to get another round - but the food more than made up for the service issues, so we'll definitely be back!"

  • "The restaurant has a very nice buildout (comfortable booths, attractive bar et) but unfortunately looking around at your surroundings is the highlight. Mussel Bar is horribly noisy, food subpar and overpriced. Best food item is the free bread and butter (I don't mean that facetiously - the bread is really good). All downhill from there - chopped salad was tiny and tasteless, steak was overcooked & overwhelmed by unappetizing Bordelaise sauce. In fairness, the crabcake appetizer was pretty good - but small for the price. Can't really comment on service as there wasn't much of it. At this price point ($60 per person easily with one glass of wine) you should leave feeling like you had a special experience. I left feeling ripped off."

  • "Sat outside alone on a warm summer night enjoying spicy mussels and Belgium beer. I don't usually do this, but I not only finished the mussels, but ate every bit of broth they came in. The draught beer list is extensive and excellent. After dinner, I sat at the table another half hour enjoying the evening and my book. No one ever hassled me about leaving. The only criticism is that the bartender didn't give the beer time to settle, so when it got to me, the glass was an inch or two shy of being full. A small price to pay for an excellent meal."

  • "The Open Table reservation didn't go through here for some reason. Thankfully I called to confirm and she said I wasn't the only one to have that problem, but they still were able to hold a table for me. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. We both loved it. The food was excellent. The drinks were great. I would highly recommend this place."

  • "Main courses were good, we had mussels, tuna and salmon. My one real complaint were the French fries, limp and light in color, not golden brown and crispy. A Begian restaurant should do better. McDonalds are better. Prices also seemed high for what you got, no value here. Service was a little short as well, felt rushed. I had not completed my beer and it disappeared."

  • "Ignoring the joke that "Mussel Bar" is next to "Protein Bar'... the food is outstanding. I've been there twice now and we've sampled three of the mussels options. The broths have been phenomenal. We've also had raw oysters, some veggie sides, etc. and everything has been great. While this is not a kid-specific place, there are enough side dishes to create a meal for most eaters and if you go during the earlier family dining times there are enough children there to not feel out of place."

The restaurant itself is nice,but extremely noisy inside. So if you want to have a conversation over dinner,without screaming,sit outside..."

  • "This is a fun restaurant with a great vibe, but very loud due to the open kitchen and banging pots and pans, which is fine, but don't expect to have a meaningful conversation with the noise in the background. We had the mussels and were disappointed in their size. You would think a place that is named after the crustacean would carry the best ones. I have had better and bigger in the frozen section of the grocery store! No lie. Oysters were also small for the price. Going out to dinner is not cheap at this place and I would expect more premium seafood. One exception; the shrimp were large and very good. Our server was excellent thank goodness! Our bread was served in a 'basket' that looked like a dirty hat, fabric and stained."

  • "Went there for brunch on Father's Day and it was a good pick for the special ocassion. Everyone's food was delicious and the outdoor patio was surprisingly quiet and relaxing even though it sits right on Glebe and Wilson. We had two young children with us--there was no kid's menu so I am not sure I would technically call it kid friendly but there were plenty of choices on the regular brunch menu that were appropriate for them and at least half the tables outside had kids at them. Mussels are the best I have ever had (though I am not a connoisseur I have had my fair share) and the french fries and dipping sauces are so yummy! Overall a great experience. We are definitely planning on returning soon."

  • "My boyfriend and I came to this restaurant on Friday, and we were a little disappointed. We both ordered mussels, and I additionally ordered the cheesy grits. The grits were definitely the best part of the meal. Usually other restaurants say they have them, but they're more of a polenta. These were large grained amazing grits. Their mussels weren't as good as either of us expected. My boyfriend said that they were heavy on the cream, and whenever you ate one that was anywhere near a lemon, that's all the flavor you got. The service was great, they took plates away as needed."

  • "Although I have been to the restaurant numerous times, I did not know the chef would make special dishes for strict diets. We had a vegan with us this time and the chef did not dissapoint! He made three fantastic dishes specifically for our friend. Couple that with our awesome food and beer, and the experience was wonderful."

Other than the server being way too busy, everything was great. I would definitely go back, hoping it was a one-time thing."

  • "I read some negative reviews back in the fall but I have to say that we can only speak highly of Mussel Bar, the service and the food. We were lucky enough to go on an all-you-can-eat raw oyster night. We consumed loads of really top notch oysters, Thai curry mussels and an assortment of other delicious items such as the blue crab dip, sweet potato fries, and the lamb meatball appetizer. The only complaint is that the meatball was really too small for $11 price tag but it was delicious and tender and perched on a nice little mound of mashed potatoes. Our server was quick and efficient and paid just enough attention to us and not too much. Lots of great beers to choose from. So glad Mussel Bar is in our neighborhood!"

  • "We wanted to try the restaurant for some time. We ended up trying for Sunday brunch. The menu was half lunch and half brunch. I had the Steak Frites & Eggs and my husband ordered an appetizer, Slow Roasted Lamb Meatball and Lemon Souffle Pancake w/ lemon whipped ricotta & blueberry maple syrup. My steak was cooked spot on but the lamb meatball was a little too strong on the raw chopped garlic taste. We both like the pancake but thought it was too small a portion for a full meal and rather expensive to boot. We would definitely go back for the mussels and dinner/lunch menu."

  • "Very loud. Not a place to linger over conversation - maybe why the TVs - all the hard surfaces in the large space made it hard to talk across the table without shouting. The waitress, while pleasant had a speech impediment, which given the noise level, made her almost unintelligible. Asparagus salad was very good, although with only 2 tiny slivers of watermelon radish. Friend's Mediterranean mussels had a rich, flavorful sauce. My Provencal was a little bland; wished there was more garlic basil notes. Husband thought his Shrimp and Grits was greasy. Other friend thoroughly enjoyed the Prime Rib, Wednesday's special. Love mussels but there are other more amiable places. Just disappointed it didn't live up to Weidmaier's other places."

  • "If you like mussels, then you must visit this place. The mussels at Mussel Bar & Grille are no joke! They come in a variety of preparations like the classic white wine and garlic, Provençal, Mediterranean, and my new favorite Thai with basil and peanuts. It's mildly spicy without blowing your mouth out and you can still appreciate the delicate flavor of the mussels. Highly recommend!"

  • "After going to the Mussel Bar in Bethesda and Brabo, my boyfriend and I were looking forward to a nice meal since had been craving mussels all weekend. The sauce was almost tasteless, the quantity seemed small compared to the Bethesda location, the beet salad was presented well but gave you possibly a quarter of a beet and a few springs of lettuce, and my filet tasted like meat, even though it had bourdalaise sauce on it. The best part of the evening was the atmosphere and my glass of wine. We will not return. "

  • "In the description of our reservation we had mentioned that it was our anniversary, that didnt matter at all we were seated by a horrible table near a column and the bar not in a scenic booth or table. Our server only stopped by to check on us once we were served, and got our order wrong! Horrible service, we are lucky we do not live in the area so we will never eat here again!"
