Diner Reviews
  • "Original food combinations, tasty, but very heavy dishes. The raw oysters were a disappointment, small, flavorless and not fresh. The 'dipping sauces' were sad. The mignonette too acidic, the other intolerable but the cocktail sauce good. The menu was very confusing; it could have been more straightforward and less 'artsy'. Desserts were all heavy. No refreshing desserts. Not a good finish to a heavy meal. Lunch: good quiche with an inedible crust, not good for an acclaimed pastry chef. Greens were all fresh and vinaigrette was good. Overall, the experience was definitely unique. Murray's Circle was spotlighted on 'Check, Please'. It was nothing like that review. This restaurant was very "Marin County". We left very disappointed."

  • "This was an excellent referral by the concierge of our hotel when I asked for a restaurant in Sausalito. We took the ferry round trip from San Francisco which gave us all the views. Then we walked to Murray Circle from the ferry landing. It was a good bit of exercise getting there and we enjoyed the fantastic views along the road lined with eucalyptus trees. We didn't have any views from our quiet almost private room table, but the ambience and service were lovely and professional. My halibut served on a bed of risotto was delicious and prepared perfectly. Others had burgers and the lettuce cups which were tasty. The truffle fries were light and flavorful, too."

  • "We took a friend here for dinner, she had never been, it was a great experience for her, we loved the food and dessert was delicious. Beautiful setting. We will be back!"

  • "Lunch with the girls. Arrived early to have outdoor seating. Service, especially Fredrick, friendly and helpful. Water glasses never got to empty. Mussels great, Chx sandwich wonderful, fish of the day beautifully presented. Arugula flatbread needed more goat cheese. Will order something else next time. That was the only negative of our visit. Becoming one of my favorites in my neighborhood"

  • "The staff were attentive and helpful. The apparetif was excellent Starter "tamale" very bland expected better taste. Main course and starter were great. Melon and tangerine sorbets were out of this world. Would definitely revisit perhaps on a nicer day so that we can sit outside. Would definitely recommend to others."

  • "Historic restoration - magnificent view of the Golden Gate Bridge - innovative menu - wines and spirits - impeccable service - what more do you need to know before you go! Don't miss the seafood stew!Enjoy the warm hospitality from the entire staff."

  • "With early dinner reservations on a Sunday we encountered many enjoying the outside deck and the Farley Bar-- a beautiful day--loved it all !!! The boar ribs were terrific..."

  • "Murray Circle is definitely a wonderful restaurant in an amazing setting. It's a location that I keep going back to because I always feel as though any stress I might be carrying around just melts away the minute I turn onto Murray Circle. Of course, a lot of that is the anticipation of eating at a restaurant with very good food, excellent service and a calm, serene environment. It is a world away from the crowded, noisy and trendy eateries elsewhere in the Bay Area."

  • "This place is tucked away in a beautiful spot near the north side of Golden Gate Bridge, in a refurbished former military base (Fort Baker). The bar area and restaurant have warm and traditional feel with fireplaces and leather seating. Menu offers good variety and food was very well presented - I had quail with black rice and my wife enjoyed an excellent salmon. Bar service was outstanding, restaurant service was very good although slightly understaffed. Overall great experience - we will be back!"

  • "Cavallo Point is a lovely, laid back property. The restaurant was also a good experience. The food was very interesting and the 100 page plus wine list was fun to review. When it came to a wine suggestion the sommelier listened to our preferences and guided us appropriately! We would dine here again as we felt the quality of the food compared to what we paid was a good value. The chocolate trio for dessert was memorable!"

  • "we were asked if we had any food issues.. reply was gluten and lactose... the marrow came with potato chips instead of toast, But the duck arrived with spaetzle and it took 30 minutes to get a new plate.. we were all finished by then.. My halibut was too salty to eat but since we had serous duck issues I did not send it back. Admittedly the manager did not charge us , however we would have preferred great service and an opportunity to enjoy a meal. go once, see the building, Ft Baker, but be prepared for poor service.etc"

  • "We came with an older couple. They had trouble finding reasonable parking. It seems to be a regular problem. Murray Circle was fine and a dependably well run place. Service was timely and the food is good, if a little oversize for this age group. A doggy bag was provided!"

  • "The experience was delightful. All the staff were friendly and very warm. We were treated very nicely. The food was delicious. The only surprise was the casualness of most of the diners. For us it was a special occasion night. I would love to go back for lunch and experience the outdoors. The property is beautiful."

  • "We stayed at Cavallo Point on a stopover before leaving for Maui. When we arrived at Murray Circle for dinner, we mentioned to one very nice gentleman that we were on our honeymoon. Next thing we know, every person who needed to be was notified of this, we were seated with the best view if the Golden Gate, given free champagne, and a congratulations card. Stellar service and 5 star management. Oh and the food and wine were unbelievable! One of the best experiences we ever had. We will definitely be back."

  • "We were delighted with our experience at Murray Circle - we noted on our reservation that two of our party had food allergies, and the server made absolutely sure that we had an excellent, gluten, dairy, and corn-free meal. She made us feel comfortable and cared for, and not at all as though we were a nuisance."

  • "Made specific reservations for outdoor seating for lunch. Once my husband and I arrived, they stated we would have to "wait" - although they gave in to a woman that pleaded for an outdoor table. Very disappointing that we ate in the bar. Lunch was a simple sandwich for both of us served with chips. $50. Very disappointed. Will not be back."

  • "Great setting, views, beautiful room, and fresh local dishes, but the staff needs training and could me more alert. Top flight wine list, but lacking finesse when handling wine. Classic Marin upscale casual vibe all around, but I prefer tighter service when spending heavily on a large party. Beautiful tasty dishes, good drinks, but even in the bar the table service is, although pleasant, lacking first class attentiveness and finesse. Scouted personally two days prior, and met staff who said they had me all set up, only to find upon arrival that nothing was set up as discussed and my promised contact was not even in the house. Lip service good, real service less than thorough. Back room is loud, not private. Casually beautiful."

  • "Recently tried Murray Circle for my birthday dinner and was blown away by the level of service and attention to detail. The restaurant went out of their way to make me feel like the most important person in the room, which is hard for many restaurants of their caliber to achieve. 5 of my girlfriends and I treated ourselves to their incredible wine list and made our way through their delicious menu a little too easily. Everything was perfect. Our waiter (whose name escapes me because of all the wine) was a delight. I'd give this place 10 stars, if I could. The price is up there, so just be prepared for that at the end of the night."

  • "The ambiance was exceptional, the food great with a really nice kids menu, prices a little steep but commensurate with the quality, service on the slow side. We waited over 20 minutes for two drinks ordered at Farley Bar, and it was 7:00 on a Tuesday. The bartenders moved at a snail's pace, but they give a lot of personal attention to customers. Because the hostess forgot to bring the drinks to our table, they sat at the bar and became warm. When I complained about the warm martinis, they graciously remade the drinks and did not charge us for the first round (though I would not expect to be charged for a drink I sent back to the bar). Still highly recommend the restaurant; just plan to take your time and soak up the great ambiance."

  • "We stayed at the hotel and was able to enjoy Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the restaurant. There is a service difference between breakfast and dinner - Breakfast/Brunch service being much more casual than Dinner but this should absolutely not be a reason to disregard such a gem. There are only a handful of spots where we're able to enjoy such a meal with the dog in tow. The food in a word is outstanding, and the portions are more than fare for a restaurant of such caliber. Sure it gets a bit chilly outside, but they do a good job of minimizing this through the use of ceiling mounted heaters and complimentary throws. Go for the view. Go for the food. Go for the splurge. You'll be thankful you did."

  • "The dining room was half full at 8pm when we arrived. It thinned throughout the evening and we were the last to leave. With that I will say the experience was perfect. The food was originally sublime. The service outstanding. The knowledge of the waitress regarding the immense wine list was impressive. We all had the Market Menu and two drinks and the bill was about $200. I have not had an experience this good ever. No doubt a large part of it was the number of people dining and thereby a fairly quiet dining experience. The food is always amazing."

  • "The dining room and bar are both aesthetically pleasing, The dining room is quiet enough to actually have a conversations with fellow diners. The service is just fine. But the food is not worth a repeat of the experience. The cornmeal pancakes were twice flipped, making one side overdone; the bacon was burned (not just crisp, but burned); the kenne. potatoes were rather tasteless; there was nothing special about the eggs benedict. Would not repeat the experience."

  • "I have dined at Murray Circle four times (Farley's Bar a few more times). The first time was probably about 7 years ago, and my companions and I were sorely disappointed. The last two visits, both this year (2014), were completely the opposite. Everything was wonderful. The food, the service, the atmosphere, and the live piano music. I had the offerings on the prix fixe menu; cold asparagus soup, lamb, and dessert. It was too delicious to share with ANYONE. ;-) I also have to reiterate that Murray Circle has the most impeccable wait staff of any establishment around. And the resident blue heron, making his presence known out on the grass, is fun to watch."

  • "Excellent service. This was a special retirement celebration and the waiter was attentive and helped make it a special occasion. The food was excellent. Want to go back and take a cooking class and stay in their lodgings. Beautiful place."

  • "Food, not so much. The menu is rather limited, the prices high, and the food rather undistinguished for the price. Nothing was bad (well maybe the tasteless, crumbly toast points that came with the beef marrow starter, which itself was prepared slightly sweetened for some odd reason, then served with honey) but nothing that was elevated to the heights of the ambiance and setting."

  • "We had Father's Day brunch which was good but the small menu was a bit disappointing. There limited menu did give me an excuse to have artery-clogging, very good Eggs Benedict. My husband enjoyed his steak and eggs. It was very quiet at 1:30 PM even considering the day. I really like the aged (like me?) atmosphere rather than the frenetic noise of some restaurants. After lunch, it was great to be able to go down and walk around the edge of the bay and get that unusual view of the Golden Gate Bridge from below the north end. We will go back for dinner; the scenic walk is wonderful after a large meal."

  • "Our group of 4 had reservations for breakfast on Father's Day. They may have been busier than usual but they weren't full. The service was slow in terms of finally taking our drink orders and then our food orders. From there is sort of ground to a halt. We had been there for about 50 min. and still did not have our food. About that time the manager came over to our table to assure us that our food would be there momentarily. However, she acknowledged how long we had been there so she said that the meal was on her. Wow, we didn't expect that and it changed our experience. The food was good and the view is dramatic so we will return."

  • "The past reviews indicated there was poor service but we experienced an excellent service with our meal and wines. We celebrated my birthday and their attention to detail was superb. Matter of fact we hadn't noticed that we were already charged an 18% tip with party of 6 and they brought the check back after my husband had given them 20% and brought that fact to our attention . What can I say, we drank lots of wine! Fish stew is a must as first or main entree!!"

  • "My wife and I did not enjoy the dinner at all. Honestly, on a scale of 1-10 the meal was a three at best. We had dinner in Sausalito the night before and it was fantastic ! (Half the price). No other complaints at all ! Everything from the room to the service was fantastic. We will return but will not be eager to return to Murray Circle restaurant."

  • "This was our third time back. Drinks on the veranda were great and very relaxing. The guacamole was great. Dinner, however, was disappointing. Service was spotty, menu a bit limited and the food not worth the money. Salads were odd - mushroom salad with almost no mushrooms. Pork trio was not tasty. Halibut and mussels did stand out as being very good. What happened to the fabulous steak plate that used to be served and which was the reason we returned. Overall, dinner was a disappointment. Likely won't be back for more than drinks."

  • "I heard about this restaurant from TV shows and friend's recommendation. We went for lunch and the food is good, although slightly over-priced for what it is. The flavor was good, but not wowed. Nevertheless, the servers were attentive, but a little slow on the service. Overall, it's a good place to eat, will probably give another try for dinner."

  • "We dined at Murray Circle to celebrate our son's graduation. We were greeted with a 'Congratulations' card signed by the staff and seated within 5 minutes of arriving. However, it was another 20 minutes before a waiter approached our table to take our drink orders. We ordered drinks then waited another 15 minutes for them to arrive. After 40 minutes, I had to call over the hostess to ask for bread. The menu has changed considerably...for the better. However, the waiter insisted on explaining every item on the menu to each table he was serving. While thoughtful, it was completely unnecessary and explained his overall inattentiveness. If service improves (considerably), this restaurant could be incredible with its views and menu."

  • "Our recent dinner here was very good, exceeding expectations based on many of the reviews. The rainbow chard tamales were truly an amazing way to start and the duck a la plancha (seared to be crispy on outside/juicy inside) and fresh ocean stew were very savory main courses. The salted caramel pot de creme was a nice finish to a very good meal. The encyclopedic wine list is chocked full of expensive "trophy wines" from well know producers but does include many values and an excellent selection of 1/2 bottles. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable but tended to disappear at times. The only misstep was that the wines are poured by the sommellier who apparently is not in any rush as our wine arrived after the appetizers were served."

  • "Such a shame...easy food to make special, this was an overdressed mess of a nicoise salad."

  • "Our service was excellent and attentive but not intrusive. It was our anniversary and they greeted us with a card and Prosseco. Nice touch. The server made an error with our appetizer and brought out the wrong one. No big deal but I didn't realize until after we had left that it was not added to the bill. Several of the dishes were executed for gourmet quality but lacked boldness of flavor, too subtle in taste. A wonderful special occasion place but not on the everyday budget."

  • "Made reservations for 2 pm brunch, but unfortunately got stuck on the both bridges and arrived late. I understand the kitchen closes 2:30 and we got there 2:18, nevertheless that is not a reason to get a dead omelet as dry as a dry tortilla and my husband a blah sanduich , which had tons of avocado and very little chicken. The potato chips were grand , though. I had a mimosa and my husband a Bloody Mary and $90 later, we hurried out . Sorry, plus two expressos. I will give another chance to Murray's Circle in the future, but the taste still lingers in my brain."

  • "I'd been here once before, soon after the restaurant opened, and the service had been awfully slow. This time, the service was attentive and the food was quite good. Given its out-of-the-way location, this is not a place I'd recommend for a casual dinner but it has a special feeling and is great for a special evening. The bar was vibrant but not too crazy and on this chilly evening, there were many bundled up patrons seated outside enjoying a cocktail. Way too cold for me but if you enjoy the SF fog, a great experience. Overall, while the food was good, this ambience is what I'd return for. "
