  • An Afternoon in Pilsen

Although the restaurant is located in the heart of Pilsen, the food was not very reminiscent of the Hispanic culture, yet it was fabulous! Our seafood was done to perfection. My friend and I made an afternoon of Pilsen. We went to the National Museum of Mexican Art, then dined afterwards at Mundial. It made for a great afternoon with an early dinner.

The food lives up to it's Michelin Bib Gourmand status. The staff was friendly. The waiter was knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on. The food was upscale, interesting and fresh. I would definitely go again. The only thing that was a miss for me was the creme brule, which had a candied fruit topping that I did not like. The neighborhood kids across the street from the restaurant were setting off fireworks, which was a little unsettling at times.

Our party of four had been in the restaurant about 1-1/2 hours. We ordered appetizers, entrees, desserts. After we paid the bill ($190 including tip), we were chatting quietly when the waiter told us they were booked that evening (this as at 8:00 pm) and asked us to leave. As we got up to leave the table, I noticed the restaurant was not even half full. I will never go there again. PS: I have been to Mundial several times in the past. The food used to be better and we all commented on that during the meal. The pork shank was fabulous, though.

This area, with its large Mexican American population is best known for its typical, if well executed TexMex food, tacos, tortillas, quesidillas etc. But you can also find some leading edge, excellant fusion food at a place like MundialCocina, a small storefront with very innovative, Mexican inspired, global cuisine. The food is great, service a bit slow, but meals are times to socialize, otherwise go to McDonalds. I had the rack of lamb-terrific, as was the cajun shrimp my wife had. (I did order them rare and they came well done, but the charming waitperson felt bad and quickly brought anther order.) The shrimp were very good, but perhaps cooked a bit too long and were a bit dry, but the sauce/seasonings were great.

I really wanted to like this place but it just seemed to miss the mark on many fronts given the cost. To start - the service was just slow as many others have commented. She was a lovely waitress - only one of her and she was also the bartender. Overall - ambiance was lacking - maybe because we went on a Thursday night and the place was quiet. Food was good - just not great. My buddy had a ribeye special and I would say that was the highlight of all the entrees. Everything was flavorful and well prepared - just nothing that really stood out. Highlight was the Blood Orange Sangria. I really did enjoy that especially because it wasn't overly sweet like many Sangrias. Overall good food - just not worth the fine dining prices.

This was an amazing meal! The food was delicious-- beautiful presentation, unusual array of ingredients, lots of choices. It was simply one of the best meals we've had in Chicago and comparable to the best and finest we've had in Mexico City (Mexican food that has nothing to do with burritos and tacos). The outside of the restaurant and neighborhood made me a bit doubtful but inside-- very cozy and comfortable. The chef came out to deliver one of the plates and we learned he had studied at Cordon Bleu in Paris. Very memorable experience and would go back.

The food is innovative, fresh, and well presented. The service is aweful because it is understaffed, and not the server's fault. It was tough to watch one man be the host, the busboy, the bartender and the server. It left big gaps in our service and our water glasses empty. The least the restaurant should do is add staff on the busy nights - like the Saturday we visited. We observed dissatisfaction among the other guests as well.

What a grand surprise! In the midst of Pilsen, among busy taquerias, is this gem of a yummy, fabulous restaurant. Our dishes were fantastic, especially the Azteca casserole. The decor is beautiful and the small crowd were all intently enjoying their dishes - the meat dishes looked amazing....but I generally can't eat heavy steak-laden meals, so I tried to keep it somewhat tame. But next time, I may not be able to resist MEAT. I am so sorry that there were not more people there on a Friday night and hope they stay in business because it is a gem. Our server was delightful and informative and the entire experience was excellent. If I were more ambitious, I would submit for "Check Please".

This place is a treasure. The service is so personable (also the chef). The high cuisine Mexican menu is a delight! You would never expect to find a place of this quality and ambiance on 18th Street, yet there it is. Street parking was available right in front of the restaurant. I brought a European visiting professor for Sunday brunch and we all were so happy with our experience. PASS THE WORD!

We have been to this restaurant several times before and EVERYTHING was always VERY good. With this visit however, the food remained excellent but the service quality was very poor. When the server was at the table, she was very nice and attentive. The level of attention our server provided however was very poor. I don't know if they were understaffed that evening but we felt ignored. Some other guests actually walked out because they were not being attended to. This was unusual but something that left us with a negative feeling for the restaurant.

After reviewing the restaurant online, I was under the impression that we were going to a really nice restaurant for my birthday. We followed the directions, and after a while I thought, well maybe this bad neighborhood is just a short cut. No. We found the restaurant and kept going. Did not feel like getting shot or our car broken into while we ate what may or may not have been good food. I wasn't about to risk my life or property to find out. For the neighborhood it's in, I bet it's a great place, unfortunately, it lacks in location, location, location.

My friends and I set a goal to visit 12 new restaurants in 12 new neighborhoods in 2012. Mundial was our February selection. We went as a group of 10 and the staff handled our group very well. Everyone was delighted with their dinners with the exception of the two who ordered the paella. They both felt that dish wasn't special. I ordered the Caserola Azteca (a vegetarian dish). It was absolutely delicious. While I was drinking beer, my friends that had the Sagria said it was also fantastic. All the way around, I'd recommend this place.

Food was great..... Did not disappoint. Service was lacking. When we arrived at the restaurant, it took about 20 min to be aknowledged by anybody. After we were sat down at our table we ordered drinks... This was my biggest disappointment..... It took my server around 30 min. To bring me the beer I ordered.... That to me is outrageous..... It was just a beer.... All they had to do was POP it open and hand it to me... So when I was ready to order my second beer, I made sure I ordered it before I finished my first so I don't sit there with nothing to SIP on... And it took her another half hour to bring me my next drink..... Food is good at cocina meztiza.... But they need to get there service in order....

Four of us went for dinner before attending a play. I was expecting a good Mexican restaurant and instead found it to be a fine representative of modern Latin American cuisine. The ceviche is some of the best I have had in Chicago and the salmon empanadas were excellent. Also outstanding was the Azteca vegetable platter,as well as the stuffed pepper. Wine list was a bit limited, so we went with the peach/blood orange sangria. Service was very accommodating and pleasant. Highly recommended.

The vote was outstanding, which is why I am still rating the overall experience as very good. I would go back often if it wasn't for the lousy service. The staff was very friendly, but it took forever to get our drinks and food ordered, and just about as long for it to come out. Thankfully, I was with good company so we didn't mind too much, but it is definitely something they need to improve upon.

Reading the positive reviews, we were excited to try. Very disappointed. Soup had no spices, no flavor. My shredded chicken appetizer had bits of bone. My ravioli looked good, but again, bland. My husband's skirt steak was extremely tough. Drinks were just okay (margaritas). The best thing about this restaurant is that the food came out extremely hot. The kitchen is right in front--should block the lighting coming into the dining room as it tends to be right in your eyes. Unfortunately, we will not be back.

This is not your typical Mexican food! We started with a salad of julienned vegetables, greens, a soft cheese and coconut shrimp. Scrumptious! My husband had the stuffed poblano pepper, which was hearty, interesting and well-presented. I was in the mood for comfort, so chose the special T-bone steak smothered in a slightly sweet, yet subtle barbeque sauce. The steak was cooked exactly as I had ordered it. We will definitely return and look forward to sampling more items from their interesting menu.

We first noticed this restaurant while looking for a place to eat before going to the Mexican Museum nearby. A review online said that it had been voted one of the 10 best Mexican Restaurants in Chicago in 2011, I think. My daughter had an assignment from school to eat at a specific cultural restaurant and go to a museum for that culture and she had chosen Mexican. So we had naturally expected the food to be more along the lines of Pepe's. When we got there, we found a lovely small restaurant with a menu not at all typical. The food was superb and very well presented. It is a bit pricey for what we were expecting, but well worth the price for what we got. The kids all started out the meal feeling very disappointed and we all left very happy

We shared the mushroom appetizer - very tasty though mushrooms shared the dish equally with other vegetables. One main course was a pork shank - delicious, though the accompanying polenta was dry. The other was wonderful grilled scallops in a rich lobster sauce, wisely accompanied by an arugula salad with green apple. We were there on a Wednesday night so it was rather quiet - weekends might be noisier. Portions are ample and prices are typical Chicago (around $20 - 25 for mains, so value is decent. The room is pretty and service was friendly and knowledgeable. Street parking is very easy.
