A word from Mundaka
Mundaka is a Spanish style tapas restaurant in downtown Carmel, CA. It is the result of great friendships, a love of food and wine and music, and a long term romance with Spain and its culture. Open in March 2009, Mundaka continues to evolve daily with the creations of our chef Brandon Miller, and the musical musings of all our talented contributors. Mundaka aspires to be the hub for all that is tasty, fun, artistic, creative, and cultural in Carmel-by-the-sea. We look forward to seeing you soon.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This is a cute, fun, friendly place for awesome tapas. The staff is welcoming and the food is spectacular. A nice change of pace for Carmel dining. Kudos to the chef and the staff for a great dining experience"

  • " My wife wasn't so sure. The menu doesn't tell you about the courses. But she finally found some she liked. They could do a better job about the menu. If you are a tapas fan from Spain, then you probably know what's on the menu. Else, you don't have a clue. Interesting. I liked it, Not sure if my wife did. "

  • "Tapas that have two bites shouldn't cost $10-14 per plate. Missing that special kick of flavor. Since tapas are normally such small portions they are packed with flavor. Mundaka is just not hitting that mark. We had a group of 4 and ordered 10 different plates. Only one I can remember was the potatoes and ketchup. Oh yeah... And the pitcher of house sangria taste like a box of red wine. Headed to Barcelona in a couple weeks... Hope the tapas bars/restaurants there erase my memory of Mundakas. "

  • "Have been a few times - very authentic dishes (tortilla, boquerones, patatas bravas) and nice ambience. Great drinks (had a jalapeno margarita and a few claras, which is a spanish shandy). Service was not great this time, though it has been before. I would/will return."

  • "A wide spectrum of super fresh and tasty small plates of very authentic Spanish style food. Very good Spanish wine list. Unbelievable 32 ounce ribeye steak shared by four people. Authentic Spanish cocktails and coffee. Very casual. All in the group are seasoned travelers to Spain and San Sebastian."

  • "Mundaka is Carmel's local hot spot. Great small plates (tapa style). Quality ingredients."

  • "We wanted a culinary experience. Although unique items, food was rather bland. Waitress was perky and nice but service was very slow. Cocktails overpriced. We probably won't go again although it was a unique experience."

  • "Bravas were delicious, and while most of the food was good -- it was not remarkable. And there were major inconsistencies. They really skimped on ingredients -- if you are going to charge $11+ for two roasted Pequillo peppers, you need to stuff them with more than mashed potatoes. (No evidence of salt cod advertised.) Same goes with fritters supposedly containing chorizo and olives. "

  • "This is our second visit to Mundaka. It was fabulous. Wvery dish was a surprise to the taste buds. From fried garbanzo beans to the Pato we enjoyed it all my boys especially loved the anchovies. Yum!"

  • "Great food and value. The local younger crowd favor it though us "older folks" like it too!"

  • "Our waiter disappeared. The bartender was excellent and picked up the slack. Otherwise, it was fantastic!!"

  • "I was very happy to find a place open past 9 in the area. I was very spoiled in San Diego with late night dining options, so when I moved here, not being able to catch a late night bite was disappointing. Mundaka was recommended by a co-worker who raved about the food and the unique atmosphere. Upon entering I knew it was a unique place. The menu is outstanding and our waiter made excellent recommendations. Even dropped a few jokes. I did not like the crepes. There wasn't as much love put into the dessert than the savory dishes, but since everything was so good before that, it would not keep me from coming again. "

  • "The service and food were both exceptional. It is an interesting place that provides a comfortable setting and a true experience, yet allows for good conversation."

  • "My husband usually does not like to venture too far afield when it comes to food, but I was able to convince him to try Mundaka because we had Spanish food before (on Belden Place in San Francisco) and liked it. Mundaka's tapas menu was a great change of pace, and we really got into the spirit of trying several different small plates. The variety was good (beef, pork, chicken, fish and vegetables) and the tastes were spectacular! The waitstaff were pleasant, helpful and very knowledgeable of the dishes (even removing meat where possible to make more dishes vagetarian). We also enjoyed the flamenco guitarist playing in the bar area. It added a lovely background to the fun food experience. All in all, Mundaka was a great find!"

  • "The food was wonderful and unique, and we loved the $5 party bottle of wine - Don't ask $5, ask, $8. You don't need to ask. Great value."

  • "Waitpeople are super. Experience for all 6 of us (and I've been there previously) was not good. Seating was odd (though we had a reservation), food was inconsistent and expensive for what we received. I've been there before and it was much different than this time - Mundaka seems to have lost it's way and we felt at times like the only people eating dinner there."

  • "Authentic Spanish Tapas in Carmel. Who'd a thunk. This is as close to the kind of food you get in Spain that I've had in CA. Prices ore very reasonable, the quality is great and the variety is impressive. Some good Spanish wines as well."

  • "The tapas were outstanding, the Bomba is a must. Service was also top notch. Highly recommend."

  • "We arrived before the crowd and had a fun evening. The sauce for the cannellini was to die for and the fried garbanzos with truffle salt are addictive. My husband left feeling a bit underfed, but he just needed to order more plates!"

  • "Found this gem of a place. The atmosphere was vibrant and fun and we settled in to glasses of champagne and tapas, the service was attentive but not too much, we ordered a selection of different foods and all came timely and were delicious, even the desserts were great. Would recommend this place as a fun, casual place to enjoy good food, wine and friends. Loved it."

  • "I had been wanting to try this place for some time but the opportunity never presented itself. Our ten year anniversary visit down to Carmel was the perfect timing and Mundaka did great. Out waiter was engaging and helpful without being overbearing. The food was varied and everything we tasted was great. The cannelloni was the best, although the were many close seconds. And we had a great Spanish Abarino wine that complemented the food perfectly. We will be back."

  • "The tapas were not even similar to the Spanish ones. We had 6 pf them and the tortilla was cold and not really fresh, ensalada rusa was way too full of vinager. The ham was ok though far feom even the jamon serrano. The croquetas were all right. The service was all right and it didnt take too long. The ambiance is kitsch. Not to my taste though some young people may like it. It was not cheap either."

  • "I've eaten at tapas restaurants in the Bay Area over the last couple years, but never have I found one that replicated the foods I so love in Barcelona. If you don't have a reservation, don't even try to get in! The food was great. They are always packed, which is probably why the service is a little slow, but then it does lend to the whole ambiance of being in Spain."

  • "Excellent Spanish tapas!! Bacon wrapped dates were terrific, as was Cauliflower gratin, and Lamb & feta burgers. There are so many more things that looked good, one could keep going back and finding new things. The waiters are so friendly and helpful! They are very busy, so probably need more staff. The Rioja wines are fantastic!"

  • "Geat find in Carmel....we had early reservations, and with only a few people there, we received incredible service. Everyone here was so nice, knowledgable and helpful. The small plates were delicious and unusual....and being small plates we tried several. The fried garbanzas went great with our margarita and beer, we also ordered the Bombas (fabulous), the lamb burger with shoestring fries, and the duck confit. It was more than enough food. We will definitely return the next time we're in Carmel."

  • "It took two hours to get four dishes. Our dishes were served to other people who didn't order them and staff said here enjoy these on us yo the other people. Brought us the wrong bill three times. Kitchen couldn't make several items but couldn't explain why or offer other options after waiting over an hour. Our drinks were never brought to us after asking at least seven or eight times. Waiter couldn't remember our order and came back three times to ask us and had it wrong each time. Water never refilled. Over all negative experience."

  • "My husband & I spent over $150 just on food & we were still hungry. We actually went to another restaurant for more food afterwards. The drinks were good, but when I think of Tapas, I think of reasonably prices small bites. The prices don't match the portions here."

  • "I always enjoy going to Mundaka. It is my first choice for Carmel restaurants and I am a local who dines out often. The ambiance is great along with the food AND their hours go later than most restaurants in the area. Though they always seems busy, I have never had to wait more than 5-10 mins for a table."

  • "I lived in Spain for 20 years and am always on the lookout for Spanish food restaurants to take me back and bring back memories. This usually ends in disappointment because the chef always feel obligated to try and improve on perfect dishes (or have never really been to Spain to learn how they should taste). Mundaka does a pretty good job of replicating a Spanish dining experience. The food is pretty authentic and the ambiance is nice with small tables for couples and larger family style tables for larger groups. We went on Friday and enjoyed live Spanish acoustical music. The bar is nice for having a glass of wine or beer with some tapas. Bottom line, Mundaka is the best Spanish tapa restaurant I have found in the Monterey Bay area."

  • "The draw for me was the mandolin player, Dave Holodiloff. He is an amazing musician and entertainer. He got the crowd involved and made it a very special evening. I found the food OK but not amazing. You need to be ready for a "tapas" genre menu. The wine was good, but there is not an extensive selection. The server was attentive and knew the menu and wines well. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly. It is a great neighborhood location. They need to work on menu selection and presentation of food. The duck confit just came on a small white plate, nothing special. The butternut squash/potato item did not taste fresh. This is a fabulous chef who should be able to improve on these items."
