  • "Close to ballet - good for a drink / snack. Service can be slow - waiters tend to disappear - so helps to be a bit proactive when ordering & ask for the check early."

  • "The small plates were great, but the music was loud, thankfully the wait staff turned it down, but it was still very loud overall in the room. Food and drinks good, agree with other reviews it's a bar spot with good food options. Although very little gluten free options in the menu."

  • "We eat in the neighborhood often prior to musical performances. We discovered Muka on Open Table and decided to give it a try. We love small plates and everything we ordered was delicious. Our waiter was extraordinary in his knowledge of the food and wine and his gracious service. All in all a nice surprise. We'll be back."

  • "Muka has a delightful array of tapas and superb cocktails. They have featured cocktails but also a "bartender's special" - just tell them what base liquor you like and what else you like (sweet, sour, strong, fruity, light, whatever) and they will surprise you. I was not the least disappointed with what they came up with and am definitely looking forward to returning."

  • "I made a reservation here based on Open Table's 4 out of five star rating. I was sorely disappointed. In my opinion the music they played was in poor choice and VERY loud. The food was only so so at best and my husband and I made three selections off the wine list trying to find something decent and they were all pretty horrible. I have never written a review for a restaurant before - good or bad- but I wanted to make sure no one fell into the same trap of making a reservation here based on the "good" Open Table rating. Too bad because this neighborhood could use some other choices besides Jardiniere before the Symphony but look elsewhere!!!"

  • "Very warm welcome from the maitre d, who proved knowledgable about good wine (and provided a generous pour). Pacing of food a bit uneven, as was the quality -- Brussel sprouts salad was great, the poached pear more than a bit bland. I'd also have preferred more low key music in keeping with the restaurant's understated atmosphere -- but this may be a remnant of its transition from bar to restaurant. This place has potential and is, even now, a solid choice for a light bite and a nice glass of wine before or after a show."

  • "Our first visit to Muka left us wanting to repeat the experience. Everything we ordered was delicious, and though advertised as "small plates" the salads were large enough to split--especially the Brussels Sprouts salad, as are several of the entrees, such as Braised Pork.. The Pancetta-Apple salad is to-die-for, as are the Polenta Poppers. The menu is not extensive, but adequate, with only 3 desserts to choose from. It's about the savories and wines, not the sweets. Reasonably priced."

  • "Based on the online menu & reviews, I had more expectation than delivery. However, the food was nice. My initial impression left me questioning staying as they really have no idea how to handle reservations. We arrived early for our reservation to an entirely empty restaurant & they actually attempted bar table seating! Upon pushing a bit we were shown a lounge area that is not conducive to a meal so were finally given a tall table. They could have just as easily pushed 2 of the tables together for us & sat a party of 2 at the tall table. After the rough start, our food was nicely done (albeit long spacing) & our server was terrific. Overall a nice evening & once they work out seating the room & food spacing, they will be fine. I'll go back"

  • "While it was clear there were still working out the kinks as they just started, the server was very polite and it was nice to find a restaurant that wasn't swarmed by the theater crowd. The menu offers a lot of diversity and it was basically elegant bar food and beers for our date night. Would definitely go back again."

  • "All the patrons were having a good time. And the food was quite tasty, with great service. We ate there for the first time, and we'll return to taste other items on their menu."

  • "My wife and I dropped in on a Friday night because we wanted small plates and weren't super hungry. The food and drink were fantastic, and the service was great. Favorite thing may have been the French accents all the employees had :)"

  • "I would recommend eating in the bar area before a performance at the Opera House or Symphony Hall, because I think the service was probably better there. Those of us off in the dining room rarely saw the wait staff. One patron got up to find someone in order to get his check. The staff was nice, just preoccupied by the busier bar area."

  • "The background music set the tone for a relaxing, well paced pre-ballet dinner. The pork was tender and full of flavor. The pear with goat cheese was a gem and overall the consensus was we would return to try other offerings on the menu. Well priced and great quality with a delightful, helpful staff!"

  • "I'm not sure whether Muka is trying to be a bar with food or a restaurant with a full bar. I lean towards the former, but either way, the food and drinks were tasty. The menu is mostly small dishes, with only 4 entrees. We tried two of them and they were both hits, as were the starters, cocktails, and wines. The service was spotty but recovered. We skipped dessert but they sounded great."

  • "This new restaurant is a quick walk to Davies Symphony Hall. We enjoyed the pear salad, the barbecue chicken plate, the brussel sprouts, and the fried polenta, among other selections. Service was friendly, as well. Inexplicably, an old Shirley Temple movie was projected (no sound) on a screen in the corner. While it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the decor (mostly black/white photo enlargements), it did prompt dinner table conversation of child stars who did/did not survive Hollywood."

  • "It was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in years . The waiter didn't know which wine was which, same with the cheese. Salad was ok as was the room but I would not go back"

  • "We went here for small plates and a glass of wine before the Nutcracker. Everything was great, the food was all wonderful and the service was exceptional. We tried the polenta, the cheese selection, brussel sprouts and fried olives. Would definitely go there again."

  • "Muka is a real gem. The kitchen delivers on the menu with clever takes on classical dishes. While not extensive, the menu is well balanced and sure to please a wide variety of tastes. The team has done a great job creating an inviting spot in a not so obvious location for fine dining. Unlike some of the other reviewers, we didn't have any problem with service."

  • "I decided to try this place for dinner on a Saturday before the Opera. Despite its location in a parking garage, the restaurant itself has pretty good ambiance. The food was actually decent although nothing extraordinary. The real problem with this place is the service. There seemed to be only one waiter covering the whole restaurant and bar. The place isn't huge, but even so when your waiter doesn't come by the table for 30 minutes at a time and you have tell him twice to bring the check and have to wait 20 minutes for it, there's a problem. In an area with plenty of good restaurants I recommend choosing another."

  • "This is a relatively new restaurant in the Civic Center area - good for concerts, ballet, etc. Service is very pleasant if a little haphazard. There was on glitch in our meal, and they immediately dealt with it. Small plates. Excellent calamari and polenta poppers."

  • "We were looking for a place to eat before the opera last Saturday and found Muka. Chose it because it had availability and due to good reviews on Yelp. The place exceeded our expectations. The thing here is the many small plates, like Tapas, but not Spanish. The blue cheese potato gratin was great, and the cheese from their cheese plate (in particular a triple-cream brie) was amazing. But best of all was the parsnips with toasted pecans and bourbon brown butter. I'm sure that particular item is seasonal, so get it while it lasts because it was amazing. The waiter (Jean-Luc) was attentive but not intrusive. He told us this was a new location for them, but also a departure from the format at their previous location. We'll definitely be back."

  • "We went before our Opera event and enjoyed a nice glass of wine with small plates. Very interesting "deep fried olives" filled with anchovies. All food we tried was very good and it was served in a timely manner."

  • "Suitable for a light bite before the opera (or symphony, or jazz, etc.) and they are aware that many of their patrons will be there for that purpose."
    Dined on 11/14/2013
  • "First, this place is so dark one needs the small candles on the table to read the menu. As for the latter, then one would search on all sides of it to answer the question, "Is this all there is?" Very weird menu. I'm all for small plates, but the offerings were very limited. The service was terrible, with either too few or too clueless servers. The woman who sat down next to us ordered a glass of wine that didn't arrive for ten minutes, and the place was hardly busy on a Thursday night, despite the fact that there were symphony, opera and City Arts & Lectures. We were going to the latter, and it took 20 minutes to get check after requesting it. This location never a winner, and Muka doesn't qualify either."

  • "We live in S.F. And eat out a lot. After a movie at Opera Plaza we walked to Muka and loved it. 1. Excellent tapas type servings. 2. We could hear one another talking. 3. Efficient "just-right" service. 4. Very affordable."

  • "We came to the restaurant with over 1.5 hours time to spare before heading to the symphony. The staff and kitchen wasn't able to serve us a few small plates and dessert in that timeframe. We had to leave most of the dessert on the table and run for the symphony. This happened even though we told the staff that we needed to leave on time. The food on the other hand was excellent. The olives, beet salad and the honey chicken bbq is great!"

  • "Lovely little plates (the kale Cesar, the honeyed chicken, marinated beets) that satisfy both your appetite and soul. Friendly servers, good wine list and oh so convenient the the musical wonders of San Francisco (opera, jazz & the symphony)."

  • "I love this place! Great food! The dining room was candle lit and romantic. It wasn't very crowded, but I understand they get very busy on show nights, since the opera and the symphony hall are down the street. The servers were friendly and attentive, and gave us plenty of information on the ingredients in each dish. We learned that all of the beef and pork is from Niman Ranch and that they get all of their produce local at the farmer's market. You could certainly taste the high quality of ingredients and the love put onto each plate. For dessert, we had earl grey panna cotta and brioche bread pudding. Both were delicious. They also have a full bar with really good wine and cocktails! This is definitely my new place in Hayes Valley."

  • "I loved the old location that Muka was in, so I was excited to see it had moved to a larger spot. Maybe because it's still relatively new in the Hayes Valley location, but the service was a bit disjointed and ambience was a bit off (e.g. large windows in the restaurant/bar are nice, but needed cleaning...the back dining room had a random table in the back that was draped in something that looked like a old curtain). High points were that the food was great - everything we ordered tasted delicious. However, we found the food prices a bit high for the portion sizes...we eat all over town and felt that for the portions we got, the prices should have been $2-3 lower per dish. But otherwise a nice experience."
