A word from MUD HEN TAVERN
MUD HEN TAVERN's food, drinks and inviting atmosphere offers an affordable dining experience for the area. Susan and Executive Chef and Partner Kajsa Alger will be preparing a wide variety of rustic dishes and bar food, with the occasional global inflections that these beloved chefs naturally bring to the table. The bar team, led by Morgan Fox (Upstairs II, Pourtal Wine Bar), alongside mixology consultant Tricia Carr (formerly Alley), have curated a beverage program that offers a vibrant and accessible selection of international wines, local craft beers and artisanal cocktails that complement Mud Hen Tavern’s cuisine. The refurbished space includes plenty of booths and communal tables, as well as an expanded bar with a draft beer system, all in the front room to allow patrons to easily walk in for drinks or dinner. The outdoor patio offers a more relaxing atmosphere for reservations, larger groups and private events.

Diner Reviews
  • "This place is great..... with some of the items from the Street menu. Addition to the expanded menu and bar this place is still awesome."

  • "Got an e-mail offering a 4th of July special and am I so glad we went! Got a free draft beer because I wore my bathing suit in keeping with the theme of the night. Plus, $10 cheese burgers with a side of sweet potato fries for $3 (delicious) and a $5 Bloody Mary for my wife (also great). I would do that again just about every night of the week. Thanks for the beer, Susan! You rock!"

  • "Delicious food. Great for snacks and small plates. Try the chicken and waffles dish, lamb meatballs and the deviled eggs -- yum. Nice selection of beer and vino. I also had a pasta main which was good but not nearly as tasty and exciting as the starters. Decent service."

  • "Mud Hen Tavern has phenomenally delicious food, wonderful waiters and it's just a great time!! Loved the chicken and waffle croquettes and the beer batter onion rings. The cinnamon roll bread pudding is obscenely wonderful."

  • "Very enjoyable evening. Loved the small plates and wished we were dining with a larger group so I could try more dishes. The broccoli is delicious. I don't live close by, but if I did, this would be a regular spot. But, when nearby again, we'll definitely try it again. It was quiet outside on the lovely patio. The service was also quite good .... thanks for a great meal!"

  • "Highly recommend the Kaya Toast and Late Harvest Corn. The food and drinks are fantastic, as are the staff. I loved Street and I love this place. It can get very loud though and I've got the hearing of a zillion year old Mummy... :-/ I always get a bunch of dishes to share. I have my favorites, but will always find something new. Reservations advised."

  • "It was uncomfortably hot on the patio, which might have been improved by the addition of fans or the like. Fans might also have discour as he'd the multitude of flies that swarmed about, making our meal inedible. The KayaToast was yummy, but its presentation was sloppy. Breakfast burritos were fine, the watercress salad was way overdressed and the seeds tasted stale and.burnt. The brisket hash was run through the deflavorizing machine. We loved Street but won't be back anytime soon. Sad."

  • "Had a great experience. The food was delicious and there was a really good variety. The outside patio was nice and fun, although a little bit of a tight squeeze. The service was great. Perfect for a date, or a night out with friends. I would definitely go back and recommend it to other people."

  • "We love to come before the Theatre or Film. Atmosphere lovely - food great - we even like this menu better than when it was "Street". And, we loved Street :)"

  • "What an incredible dinning experience we had! This was our second time since Street morphed into Mud Hen Tavern. We didn't think Susan could top Street but her new menu is an absolute gastronomical experience. We especially like the ceviche and the Kaya toast. Everything was cooked to perfection, full of flavors without overwhelming the palate. It's our new destination whenever we come to L.A."

  • "Mud Hen is a little bit of everything. The menu caters to both vegans and non-vegans. You can think of it as comfort foods with a twist and some flair. Their menu is seasonal which keeps it fresh. It has great ambiance, an engaging and friendly staff, indoor and outdoor seating and is good for groups with reservations. Check their website for upcoming events and specials as well as their new late-night menu."

  • "Was meeting my siblings here for a family dinner. Tried to book earlier reservations but they were filling up fast one day before our scheduled dinner. So I nabbed at 9pm and told the sibs to meet there at 8pm and try our luck at the bar. Checked in at 8pm and the hostesses told us we might have a table in 30 to 40 minutes. There wasn't nearly enough room at the bar to accomodate us so we adjourned to Osteria Mozza for a pre dinner cocktail and returned at 8:40 and voila a table was waiting and we were whisked in. My daughter was really hungry so we asked our lovely server for food first before we even ordered drinks and there was something on table stat. Everything was really fun to try, the service was outstanding. Want to do back."

  • "We loved street & were excited to try this new spot. The menu looked great. As we sat down & asked @ specials we were promptly told that they are sticking to their best dishes as most of the kitchen staff was at another event. Should have been out first "tip-off" We ordered many items including the artichoke. It was under-done. So we asked to have it cooked more. We were quite surprised when the chef appeared with the artichoke & said she "tasted" it & did not understand what was wrong as it had been "cooked twice". Expecting more service oriented response we were so shocked that we accepted the already tasted item & stared in disbelief. This was certainly not our first experience with the veggie but sadly it will be our last here. "

  • "This is a terrific find. Food is exceptional. Wish there was a little more variety in mneu...but everything is terrific. Really like their take on small plates...And THIS IS THE BEST GOST DERN BRISKET IN LOS ANGELES....Drinks are interesting and well made. busy place so service is a little slow, but the staff is on the ball and involved. It's one of those places you can go back to over and over again..."

  • "Isn't so. The food was bland and unimaginative. It looked great on the plate, but all those colors and textures didn't translate into much flavor. I loved Street and went there at least once a month. I won't be giving this place a second chance. Everyone in my party was very disappointed in their meal."

  • "We went before a concert at The Hollywood Bowl. Drinks, especially the Red Sangria were great. The brisket and the fish and chips hit the spot. Amazing fries."

  • "We were a little disappointed with our experience. Went for the beer but they were out of 2 and didn't have the one we ordered chilled - a little weird if you position yourself as a pub specializing in beer! Food overall was only ok - the potato spinach dish was soggy and unappetizing, the pumpkin dish ravioli just didn't work and seemed over salted. The burger and clams were good, the salad with grapefruit and goat cheese was excellent as was the dessert - cinnamon bread pudding and the advice to have it with moonshine was right on! Overall this was really just ok as we had 2 poor dishes, 2 ok and 2 really good it averages out to just ok in my opinion. A bit of a drive for us so we wouldn't go back."

  • "Fun, hip and vibrant place serving trendy, tasty and delicious food. Creative menu - you'll want to try it all! Wonderful service. HOWEVER, and yes, this is crazy but I'm serious - we had a cloudy, cheap and most unappealing plastic water carafe placed on our table. This is a pet peeve - I can't drink out of plastic cups or glasses-period. The plastic carafe is almost as bad and really tacky! Imagine my surprise when, upon leaving and making what I hoped was a very polite and constructive comment, learned that some tables got lovely glass carafes that I saw were damn near crystal! Really? Wow. Spend the $2 and buy a few more!! But, that's the worst thing I can say. I'll be back; I just won't accept the plastic!!"

  • "We had been to Mud Hen Tavern for dinner a couple times and loved it. So we decided to try their new weekend brunch. We were not disappointed. The brunch/lunch menu is so creative; it was hard to decide what to order, so we ordered several different items. The chicken, bacon and waffle croquettes are a must order, bacon cheddar biscuits delicious, the espresso/orange marmalade toast sounded iffy but was fabulous. And my husband said he had the best tuna melt he's ever had (and that's his favorite). Can't wait to go back - worth the hour drive for us."

  • "Went here with my sisters and the food was wonderful unfortunately our service was not. Never asked if we wanted more to drink. Took quite a while to come back for anything, if at all. As another waitress whom we had to ask for assistance at one point described it, she said "oh no, its like it was great but now its bordering on making the whole experience bad because of the waiting for service" and we couldn't agree more... We would go there again because that is how good the food and atmosphere were but we'll definitely make sure we don't get the same server."

  • "Long time STREET patron, first time at new configuration. 5 of us went for Mother's Day. Things started off well - we ordered the prix fixe dumplings and tea cakes. Wonderful food! But our waitress, after intital contact, ignored us. Never came back to replenish drinks (delicious bloody mary - wanted another!), and after the first couple of dumplings, we didn't get anything, then just two dumplings for the 5 of us, the other three finally coming long after we flagged her down to report that we weren't getting any food! She said something about crossed signals. This pretty much continued for the rest of the meal - poor service, plates not cleared, etc. Gave us the wrong bill at the end. Disappointing. "

  • "Really enjoyed our time here. The bottomless pomegrante mimosasas served with Sunday brunch were well worth the money. The food has a fresh twish on it and the extra effort is made by the staff to make sure everyone is happy."

  • "This use to be Susan Finager's Street restaurant. There are unique and unusual small plates and tapas with surprising ingredients- ex. corn nuts in ceviche (yes it's good). The spicy drink with tequila is also amazing (can't remember the name of it) and the Kaya toast is a must. The bar is inside and most seating is outside- choice of sun or shade, heating lamps are available. This is a chic and funky place that will leave you satisfied if you're in the mood for something different. "

  • "I liked the previous incarnation, "Street Food", better. The food was more interesting and had more vegetarian options. The current menu is surprisingly pedestrian given the culinary pedigree of the owner...."

  • "our reservation was for 8 and we didn't get our menus for about 30 minutes- the waiter was nice but he was only asking how we were (excessively) at the end of the meal. we had to walk up to the kitchen to ask for salt- which is disappointing because i like this place a lot."

  • "Title sums it up. Everything felt amateurish, from the design, to the food, to the service. We were big fans of Street and went there often, so our expectations for Mud Hen Tavern were high. Boy were we disappointed. There was nothing special about our experience. Dishes were mediocre at best. Some of it (like the watercress salad) was difficult to eat because of the way it was prepared. Service started out OK. Waiter was friendly enough, but barely checked in. He didn't know the menu (or wine) at all. We often sat 5-10 waiting for our next dish, for cocktails or water, for dishes to be removed, for table to be cleaned. I almost took a picture of the messy table and plates, and empty glasses to post online. Oh, the hostess was great! "

  • "Food was delicious and the overall ambience was good. Service started out well but went downhill when it got busy. Great to see the chef mingle at the tables! There's a part of the outdoor patio seating (by the door and against the wall close to the kitchen) where heat stays and no fans were available. Will go back for the food and definitely do an early seating."

  • "Sadly I think the Mud Hen Tavern was much more enjoyable when it was called Street. They've changed it into a tavern in order to stay open later and serve more alcohol. Unfortunately this has made the place much blander. Some of the food remains the same. Eating there was heaven back in the day, but after the change I'd say it's much more average. "
