A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

  • So Disappointing

I took my boyfriend to MUA for his birthday. I wanted to do something really special for him. The restaurant seemed really exciting at first . . . fun ambiance, art on the walls. But the food. The food was really not great. The flavor was okay but the plating was flat and uninspired. The fried items we tried were flabby and soaked in grease, not crispy. All of the flavors were super-rich without a foil to offset that richness. Overall, it made me sad and it gave us both indigestion. I will take him somewhere else next year. :(

Fun place, food was terrible, except for the calamari. Spare ribs dry, steak overpriced and half of it was fat, lamb cheeks recommended but were fatty, little gems salad was sour, duck was very salty. Flourless Chocolate cake dry, bread pudding and fruit cobbler were good. non alcoholic drinks for were overpriced at $7.00 for a glass of strawberry lemonade for my kids. It was 200.00 for my husband and 2 kids to have a very mediocre birthday dinner : (

The service was a little disappointing and the waitress was not friendly or engaging. We ordered the brussel sprouts and the spare ribs as appetizers. The brussel sprouts were overcooked and mushy and the spare ribs were overpowered by the taste of Worcestershire sauce. The food overall was just okay and not worth the price. This was my second time at Mau and I don’t plan on going back. There are too many decent places to go here in the Bay Area.

  • Great menu for gluten free & vegan

Well, maybe not as much vegan but vegetarian, tho there are vegan choices. But gluten-free folks can eat happily; the food is delicious and eclectic -- I like the soft-shell crab po'boy, my spouse likes the steak, but you could easily make a great meal from the appetizers and small plates. Also what's a pleasure about MUA is that it's very "Oaklandish" -- everyone shows up; families with kids, parties of 10, lesbian & gay couples & friends, folks of all races & ages; the waiters are friendly and competent. We take our friends from out of town to give them an Oakland flavor.

  • WAY TOO LOUD
    BradC
    Dined on 8/10/2014
The starters of grilled artichokes, and a beet/goat cheese salad were very good. The hamburger was excellent, but the fries were not crispy enough. The cocktails and wine were very good. The service was excellent. However, while the music played was acceptable, the loudness played was NOT. It was so loud that many people were "cupping" their ears so they could hear the other people at their table. When I asked several employees about the loudness they said that they had heard this complaint many times, but "the owners likes it this way". The owner can count me out as a customer.

Everything we ordered was amazing...from the salads and small plates to the entrees...to the cocktails...and the creme brûlée. We had a vegan with us and she loved her options too. I even tried one of her small plates with tofu (which I normally hate) and the chef must be a magician, because it was so tasty. Can't wait to go back.

We visited MUA with my niece and her husband for dinner on a Saturday night with a 6:30 reservation. We were seated immediately upstairs where we were told it was less chaotic than downstairs. Thankfully we took the advice and had a nice table. As the entire restaurant is open, the music was a little loud but we could have a conversation. We ordered 4 small plates. I especially liked the calamari and brussel sprouts in browned butter. Also we ordered crab cakes and padron peppers, all very good. The large plates we ordered were also very good, but we especially liked the assortment of small plates. Our next visit will be for small plates and a bottle of wine. Our waiter was attentive even though he was very busy, did not rush us.

We were blown away from the start! The restaurant is beautiful, artsy, large, and energetic. Our group of four was seated immediately upstairs, and soon, we had some well made cocktails in hand, enjoying them with fried padrons and stuffed squash flowers. Please order the squash flowers before the season ends, you will be grateful you did. Our waitress was sweet, helpful, and attentive and her suggestions were perfect including the no cheese"mac n cheese" and the burrata ( it was sublime). Next, we feasted on pork jowl lettuce wraps, lamb tagine, duck confit, and bone marrow (very large portion, and wow, so melt in your mouth delicious!)... Believe it or not, we had room for chocolate cake. Perfect ending. All senses gratified.

First time going there and it was fantastic! It has a very industrial chic vibe and is very large-great for large parties. The food was excellent and the drink were amazing-great mixologists! We loved the duck confit, best we ever had. The new pineapple upside down cake with coconut ice cream was out of the world! We will definitely best back soon and will share this spot with friends.

Our group of 15 had a wonderful evening at MUA! We started on the patio with happy hour, and then went inside for dinner. We had a last-minute change in our reservation, and the staff was incredibly helpful in accommodating the change, even on a crowded Saturday evening. Then came the food--every dish was excellent. With such a large group, we were able to try over half the menu, and there was not a single disappointment. The wine list was great too.

Not my first time there, good is good every single time but I suggest management offer customer service classes for some of their staff. Something as simple as providing a great customer experience or bad customer service can drive customers in or take their business elsewhere no matter how great the good is.

Loved the atmosphere the second we walked in. Different than any restaurant we had been into! We had a group of six and were sat at a large table in the middle of the restaurant. The ahi tuna sashimi was amazing, the CBQ burger was also great. Only complaint was that our waiter was not fun, or very involved. He also brought out a dessert for one of our birthday, yet he charged us for the dessert that we didn't order. Overall it was a good experience and I would definatley go back and hope to get a different waiter.

I loved this place the first time I came - a few months ago. Lots of gluten free choices. The arugula salad was fresh and delicious, the pork wraps were ok, but the big disappointment was the brussel sprouts - which I remembered as being delightfully crunchy, caramelized and seasoned just right. This time they were soggy. I'll give them another try sometime, but what happened????

We went the first time about a year ago. My parents were visiting and my father suggested we go again. Made the reservation via open table and arrived on time. After a few minutes we were seated. Waitress was friendly and provided some good comments. We wanted to try different dishes from our first visit. Food arrived hot and tasty (chicken wings, roasted peppers and calamari for appetizers and lamb shank, steak, fried chiken and slalad for main dishes). Overall we were pleased with our food with the only exception dessert. We ordered mint chip ice cream sandwich that had very little ice cream between two hard cookies ($6.00). Only disappointment of the night.

Eclectic atmosphere and wide variety on a short menu. Good stuff. Recommended by a co-worker of a friend who lives in the area, it didn't dissapoint. The food items we really liked weren't the usual seasonings. The tender ribs are seasoned different, good different, although the kids didn't like them. The NO cheese mac and cheese was awesome. The Duck Confit was outstanding. The Beef Bone Marrow is a rare menu item in any restaurant, give it a try. Great experience.

Mua is my first date get-up. Every first date I have near Oakland I select Mua. Why? Because you just can't go wrong. The bar is always crowded so my date and I are well seen as we pass those thatsettle just for drinks.Seating is always perfect because there is no bad spot in the house. You can see everything from anywhere. The music always flows and tends to mix with my wine and entree and we all dance together as I nibble away. If my date is able to moan and eat at the same time while looking for more then he's happy. Very happy. And that makes me happy. I've eaten just about everything on the menu and I can attest, every dish is amazing. I've never complained and nor have my dates. Mua is perfect and closes late so more time to date.
