A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

Very enjoyable dinner. We were by far the oldest customers (early social security), the music background was in the foreground, but we could hear each other, and the place was positively vibrant. Lamb cheeks tender and in a delicious gravy, mopped up with bread (airy French) we requested; smoked trout and endive salad lovely combination of texture and flavor; remarkable five-spice type ribs; grilled artichoke had tangy dressing but weak on much edible; grilled polenta plain but enhanced by spicy tomato sauce; pecan pie/ice cream/chocolate sauce phenomenal; Mua mint ice cream sandwich very good, cocktails surprisingly only fair; affordable wine list with a nice Pinot. Despite being jammed, service was attentive (water bottle replaced without asking, informative, and, when asked (spoon essential to take advantage of sauces) responsive. Every dish could be split between the two of us, and we are looking forward to exploring more of the menu. Great fun, we'll be back.

I booked a table at Mua for my dad's birthday for four people. The atmosphere in the restaurant was much appreciated by my guest for my dad is also an artist. For appetizers we had crab cakes, mussels and cheese puffs however all of these dishes were high in sodium and had no actual taste to them. For entrees we had the duck confit, po boy and hamburger (medium rare). The duck was excellent salty but tender, the po boy burnt and the hamburger well done and not medium rare. I was extremely embarrassed because I am a foodie and thought that this over priced restaurant in Oakland would be more impressive.

Mua is a great place for lunch or dinner, if you want to impress your friends or a date. The atmosphere is hip, interesting artwork, and good music. The service was great, the food was very, very good, and prices reasonable. I recommend the soft-shell crab po-boys.

Seafood was good and appetizers were tasty. I do wish there was a few more different meaty choices for the main dish. Overally the food was good. Noise level was pretty loud but that's a tradeoff for the bar scene.

It was my first time to Mua. We had : chicken wings, crispy tofu, beet salad, crab cake, and the paddron peppers. Crispy tofu was cold! Paddron pepper was showered with salt that I spited it out after first bite ! Beet salad was just a combo of beet and some green, nuts,a little of cheese with no substance ! Chicken wings and crab cake are good. Desert was flower less chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream,I thought it was good. The waitress was careless. Over all,I would brag about Mua ,and I will not going back .

I don't normally go for the bar/lounge/restaraunt vibe but this place pulls it all together rather nicely. All the staff was friendly and knowledgable, and accommodating with my reservation when 2 of party had to cancel. Food standouts were the Carpacio, Ahi, No Cheese Mac, Ribs, Wings. I also enjoyed my Manhattans, all 4 of them.

Our server was semi-attentive. A different server delivered each dish. So, we had to explain my wife's allergy all over again. The grilled artichoke and the Garlic Chicken OUTSTANDING. Both fantastic, but the shrimp stood out. Because of my wife's soy allergy, her choices were severely limited. The server told us the kitchen decided upon the vegetarian dish on the menu. It came out and it was too salty. I waved down the server snd she instantly went into excuse mode. We offered the info so the kitchen would have a chance to correct the dish because it was super salty I had the fried chicken which was very good! Not your mom's fried chicken, it's better! Sorry mom! Creme brule & bread pudding were AMAZING! Cool atmosphere, funky art.

Arrived at 6:45 for a 7:00 reservation. We were asked if we could wait until 7:00 to be seated. Couldn't understand why when there were many (more than 5) empty tables for 2 available. We were given some excuse about potentially needing to put some of them together to seat groups of 4. There were NO other people waiting to be seated. When I asked, again, why we had to wait, we were finally seated.

MUA has the most awesome industrial decor I've ever seen from a restaurant that also has incredible food to match. I was impressed with the service, and am so happy that we chose this place. It's in a little dark corner side street, but what's inside lights up both your mind and taste buds. The taste of everything on the menu is incredible. I had the brussel sprouts and crab cakes, and my husband got the burger. The Billy Jean is very sour but delicious - and you get used to the sour taste as you drink. Everything has a colorful taste, which makes every bite so savory that you can't imagine taking your last bite! We will return with our friends as this place looks like a great place to hang with a group.

The dining experience at MUA is great. The service was excellent , and I loved the hip lofty artist abstract decor, plus the dejay on the top floor playing house music. I had a 11:30 reservation so my date and I was served very quickly. We had three different people waiting on us, and all of them were full of warm smiles, and professional. I am having my wedding reception at MUA in the private event space. I have been going there for years and it has always been consistent. Great food, great service, great specialty cocktails. I love the ambiance! It's artsy and funky but also classy and romantic. I highly recommend it. Only downside is parking can be hard because it is in the heart of downtown Oakland. Beware of street sweeping signs esp if you're there on a late night bar run.

It's very, very loud. I got a sore throat just trying to talk to my two friends who were sitting next to me. The night we went they had a DJ playing old 90's hiphop music, which I love, but not at the volume of a club. If they added some sound-proofing so it doesn't echo I would go more frequently and maybe even get to try everything on their menu!

I wish we could have ordered everything on the menu, but we had to choose, and we did: grilled romaine, pressed watermelon, brussel sprouts, spare ribs, calamari, bone marrow, blackened catfish. And there were only three of us. And we had dessert. Everything was a celebration of flavors, and our waiter kept the rhythm just right. Things came at a regular pace, and we never felt rushed. I had their 1lb rib eye w/ fries dish, and I took half of it home. But, wow! Very flavorful! My brother who is a food and wine snob had their macaroni and cheese appetizer and BBQ ribs, and he said it was outstanding! My nephews are allergic to everything, so we needed the gluten-free, dairy free, egg free, peanuts free and yeast free food. And, they grilled the 1lb rib eye clean and made them a special spinach side dish not on the menu for the kiddos. Their fries were clean as well. What was amazing was their bread pudding dessert. Both my brother and I agree that it might be the best bread pudding we've ever had! BTW, because we had kids, they put us on the 2nd floor where it wasn't as noisy. Super accommodating!

My wife and I heard about MUA from our daughter the foodie and decided to take her brother and his wife there for his birthday. We walked in and were a bit blown back by the noise level! The hostess took one look at us (we are over-50 types) and said, "Would you like the quiet room?" She took us through this enormous space and upstairs; to my surprise the space, though open to one section of the ground floor, was quiet enough for great conversation. Additional options are in the structure of the menu - either small plates or larger entrees are available. One of us ordered two small plates, the others an entree. Portion size was perfect - generous but not wasteful. Beer and wine lists are decent if not outstanding. Desserts were all great.

Having enjoyed a couple great dinners at Mua, I took a friend for its once-a-week (Friday) lunch. The lunch menu included some dinner faves, like the delicious vegetable ragout, but lightened up with more tapa-type dishes, sandwiches, and salads. The interior lighting and noise level were only slightly lighter than at dinner, although the candles and DJ were absent. The food and service, however, were almost as good. The only not-so-great dish we tried was the kale salad, which was primarily bland cooked kale combined with extremely vinegary pickled onions. In previous visits my groups had never had a bad dish. But everything else was terrific. Warning: This is NOT a place for the hard of hearing.

mua looks and feels very hip and the food is pretty darned good. but here's the drawback - it's a big loud noise space with poor acoustical engineering, so that conversations among a group of friends are difficult. the dj and light show - do we need that while eating dinner? i don't, but maybe some one else does. the food was good and the service was great. good drinks list - all the elements of being a fun place, but so over stimulating that i felt we were eating as fast as we could and got out of there asap. not a place to linger.

I took my husband here for his birthday. When we arrived it was already bustling with lots of people. We were greeted by 2 people and the person who looked up our reservation actually commented on my request for a quiet table! They took a few minutes but found us the perfect table that was a bit quieter and away from the music speakers. Our server, Alan (I think) was amazing as were the rest of the table staff. Helpful, attentive, but not at all hovering. The food - amazing. We ordered 3 small plates and on entree to share. We ordered mussels, lamb cheeks, no cheese Mac n cheese and the brussel sprouts (not mention dessert and a great beer). It was a great dining & birthday experience.

Live in sf, but was going to the tears for fears show at the fox and wanted something delicious nearby. Recommended by a friend so we checked it out. Aside from not being marked as seated in opentable and having to dispute this with the restaurant since I was being penalized by OT, it was overall an enjoyable experience. Service was slow for 6:30pm on a Wednesday (perhaps bc we weren't ordering as much as other tables?), but everything was tasty (zesty guacamole, gluten free gougeres, perfectly salted pardon peppers, and grilled romaine Caesar). Enjoyable wine and beer selection also. I'll be back next time in Oakland, but will for sure make sure they properly mark my reservation before being seated.

The ambiance is quite a cool warehouse space with lots of interesting art. The food isn't too shabby, either. The mussels and lamb cheeks in particular were outstanding on this trip but the rest of our food (smoked trout salad, mac & "cheese," 24 hour ribs) hovered in the "good enough" range. I love that they serve Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer! I keep coming back for that alone.

I liked the vibe of Mua. I did think that the food was okay, but not outstanding. The ambiance was super cool and edgy. I enjoyed my visit. My artichoke was undercooked, the nectarines in my arugula/quinoa salad were on the crunchy-side. Crab cakes were terrific.

This is one of my favorite places in Oakland. I took my 14 year old niece wanted her to experience an urban feel restaurant. She thought the place was REALLY cool! The food is yummy! She ordered a Crab Poor Boy Sandwich and I got the Fried Chicken. I wanted her to try the Brussel Sprouts and the Vegan Mac & Cheese...she loved both side dishes. Cocktails are really good. The vibe in their is awesome. I LOVE the DJ spinning the old school R&B that was a good set that evening.
