A word from MUA
MUA is an eclectic dining, drinking and entertainment spot for all ages in Uptown Oakland.
Enter the 1930's warehouse-era building, pass through a curtain and find yourself at the welcoming bar. Venture beyond and the space opens up to a surprisingly large two story dining area with large communal tables and smaller tables, surrounded by local artwork that constantly changes.
The food is American and Asian comfort food served in small and large plates.
Later in the evenings MUA has DJs along with other surprise events (check the website to see the latest). It's a great place for large parties.

  • "This was interesting. Kind of like walking into a Mad Max set or a refugee hideout in Total Recall. This place had great artwork all over the place, and it was on the arms and necks of the wait staff. Fun to check out. The food was pretty standard fare or a hipster hangout... fried chicken, a Tagine, cool edgy appetizers…I like it! Wine list was reasonable and the drinks at/from the bar are similar to what I see at the other HHs. I recommend this place if you don't mind a high decibel level, cuz it can get pretty loud. -we"

  • "The restaurant looked like a lot of fun and full of interesting people. I was excited to have dinner there. We showed up for my reservation and the hostess walked our party through the vibrant and interesting restaurant, full of funky art to look at, past all of those interesting people then up the stairs, then around the corner, then around another corner, then all the way to the end of a dark, lonely loft space. I felt like the ugly step cousin at Thanksgiving. So much for having reservations if this is the table they give you. Food and service were great, experience could have been better due to the table location."

  • "My family of 5 celebrated my birthday here. Everything from our drinks at the bar, through each bite of dessert -- all perfect. The food was delicious--we ordered the kale salad, quinoa salad, ahi tuna sashimi, crab cakes, and brussell sprouts to share. We enjoyed our drinks from the bar--vodka martini, St Peter's Golden Ale, Calcutta Collins, Billie Jean, Mua Manhattan and a Pimm's Cup. And we ended up sharing three entrees--hamburger, chicken milanese, and soft shell crab po'boy. The desserts consisted of a plate with three flourless chocolate cakes, and a delicious creme brulee. Very rarely have we come out of a restaurant saying everything was absolutely perfect. This time we did because it was! :) Thank you for a great meal."

I think of my NY Lower East Side roots, when folks created great spaces from heritage buildings, showing art at its best with the bldg refurbishment and the interior choices. MUA is that. To boot: the food offers a great array of tasteful, healthy and unusual blend of food fusions. Californian, Asian, French, wherever! NOT TO BE MISSED!"

  • "Small plates were delicious - the Muscles and Fries in buttery garlic broth, Mac and Cheese, Chicken Wings, Brussels sprouts, all disappeared in minutes. We kept ordering and every item that came out was better than the last. Our waiter was super on-top-of it, even though it was clear he was quite busy. Never lost patience and answered all questions. He made some great recommendations on beer pairing and even put a candle in the desserts so we could sing happy birthday to my son who just turned 21."

  • "We had heard good things and MUA definitely delivers. The place is kind of funky and in an unusual location but once you're inside you are transported to a different place. The menu is really cool. We started with several absolutely delicious appetizers; brussels, lamb cheeks and fried calamari. I would recommend all of them but the lamb cheeks were killer. Dinners we had the fried chicken, soft shell po boy, chicken Milanese and the duck confit; all of them done absolutely perfectly and truly delectable. We normally dine at Kincaid's at Jack London Square when in Oakland but this was definitely worth the visit."

  • "I took my daughter and her friend to dinner on a Friday at 5:30 before a concert at the Fox. There was a big crowd in the bar and out front but the restaurant had not come close to filling up yet. We loved the Asian inspired chicken wings, deep-fried crab po'boy, crab cakes and the barbecued ribs. The atmosphere was trendy and fun, service was great and we enjoyed the entire meal. Even the bill was less than expected. We will be back."

  • "Gave the waiter a look at the recipe for an "Italian Sipper" and the drink was to my safisfaction. Substitue of a single ingredient but very tasty none the less. My wife ordered a drink from the menu and that was great also. We are adding the restaurant to our list of places to take friends from out of town. Great food too."

  • "Hadn't been in several years though remembered having a good experiece in the past. Brought some friends who agreed to venture out of SF and they were not disappointed. The drinks were excellent. The burrata was amazing served with grilled vegetables that were so flavorful and delicious. The sauce the mussels were cooked in was so good we asked for bread to soak up every last drop when the fries ran out. My friend texted me the next morning to tell me she was still thinking about the mussels. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Hi, my recent dinging experience was good except for the fact that our server came by with dessert menus during the middle of our meal. He said the kitchen was closing at 10. Our reservation was at 9 and if the restaurant takes 9:00 reservations then the kitchen should perhaps not rush us to order dessert and effectively disrupt our meal. We were a party of 10 and spent well over $300. It was rude and disconcerting to push us to order dessert during the meal and made none of us want to order dessert on principle."

The waiter disappeared for several long periods of time and was not particularly helpful when he showed up. This past weekend, we had a fabulous waiter and overall service, but everything, and I mean everything was way too salty. I was dehydrated for 24 hours after. Lighten up on the shaker, chefs!"

  • "Everything was scrumptious and server was terrific! Cons: the noise level was deafening. We had to resort to lip-reading. We had planned to bring 4 more people but couldn't find a time slot. In the end we were glad they weren't there because we couldn't not have heard a thing. The tagine was fall-off-the-gigantic-bone tender, but lacking in those yummy Moroccan spices. The bussing staff (great otherwise) was overly anxious about clearing plates and forks as soon as someone was done so no one could help me manage that huge dish and we had to leave it there. The beautiful little flourless chocolate cakes were tasteless and dry. Skip 'em! Would go back but not as a group bigger than 4."

  • "Eclectic describes the food & the ambiace at MUA. Food and cocktails are always spot on. Well prepared, good portions & so tasty! Bone marrow is a 'must order' appetizer. Kale salad was okay, I remember it being better. The crab cakes appetizer & the salmon entree were absolutely delicious. Apple crisp was a wonderful way to end this fabulous meal. So much energy. Bar was crazy busy when we were there. Went on a Friday night, there was music playing. It got louder as the night progressed so go early if you don't want to deal with it. At 7:30, the music was still low enough to have an easy conversation but by 10, it was a bit too loud but I think it was perfect for the younger crowd there especially at the bar. MUA is an Oakland dining gem!"

  • "While growing up, lamb arm chops had a round bone, with a soft center. This went from being a nice flavor addition, to a direct meal feature. We found that Mua served beef marrow. This was the main draw to this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Also, ordered, chicken liver pate, cheese stuffed olives, calamari with aioli dip, beet - goat cheese - pecan salad, duck con-something. The bar is packed and still has free pour and happy hour. The DJ played an eclectic blend of music from 60-70s rock/soul/folk to Sinatra/nightclub to current pop. The music seemed to get louder as the general noise level rose. Pricey, but this place has character."

  • "Came in a little under an hour before close, but felt rushed when the server brought us dessert menus while we were still eating, and the check when we hadn't asked for it. We weren't being particularly slow, either; we were both aware of what time the restaurant was closing, and we weren't taking our sweet time, but we shouldn't have to rush, either. If you're accepting tables and reservations at 10:30, don't try to usher your patrons out by 11PM. Server was attentive and polite, but we definitely felt like we were being pushed out. Nice, full bar, but our server wasn't very familiar with it, and didn't know there was a spirits list. Overall it was a good dining experience, not outstanding."

  • "Very good cocktails, tho' somewhat less than full sized -- suggest a double. Food varied. Blackened catfish was very good, smoked trout salad was good, chicken wings were excellent if you like a somewhat sweet BBQ sauce (and even if prefer less sweet and more spice, still very good), ditto for the ribs, calamari could have used more flavoring, and lamb cheeks had a taste that was strange for us. Our five desserts were actually pretty average, tho average for a pretty good place. Creme brulee was good but not a knockout, and apple crisp was the best. A fun place, great for groups, and for a date, but the food was not up to what we expected after watching "Check, Please.""
