Diner Reviews
  • "While dinner was a nice meal with good service, the price/value ratio was bad. Much better and well priced Chinese food available, albeit with less nice atmosphere and service."

  • "The food was mediocre. Your paying for the name. If you like people hovering over you and over priced Chinese this is the best place"

  • "From the time you enter Mr.Chows you feel so special , warm greetings , smiling maitre d and distinguished and courteous waiters dressed in tuxedos. Their menu has so much to choose from .If your the least bit unsure what to order the waiters are very helpful.. The apps and dinner we had was delicious to say the least .By the time leave the restaurant you will be smiling and feeling like ..(hey..I just dined at one of N.Y. s finest resturants...)Great place!!! • "We moved from the area 2 years ago but we love to come here. Good food friendly service one of the best restaurants downtown. Try to get a table outside. It's worth it."

  • "The waiters weren't waiters, they were used car salesmen. Got ripped off from the start on their drinks, didn't provide any sort of pricing, but suggested $35 glasses of champagne, for me to find on the bill later. Food was pretty much street meat and the waiters were aggressively pushing more on us. After about 40 minutes I was so annoyed that I just asked for the check and left. I will be calling my credit card company to dispute this charge if I don't get a full refund. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS CLASSLESS DUMP."

  • "Brought my sister (who is visiting NYC for the first time) here for dinner and we both loved it! Excellent service as always. Very attentive waiters, great Chinese food and our outdoor table on a perfect early evening made the whole experience special. My sis loved the crab and corn soup and I loved the gamblers duck! I love coming back to Mr Chow!"

  • "We had meat that was called "fillet" it was the most disgusting piece of meat ever and was $44. Never again..."

  • "This is one of our all time favorites. Even though this is a restaurant frequented by celebrities, the staff always greets us like family. The drunken fish is outstanding. The squab with lettuce leaves is a special treat. Thank you for consistently being better than good, and always friendly."

  • "Worried that Mr. Chow has lost a step. It wasn't nearly as good this time. Service was down and the food was really down."

  • "Left hungry and $200 lighter for slightly above average fare. Service is professional and attentive. Other than trying to impress someone that you can afford to pay handsomely for the same quality you'd get from a Chinese storefront restaurant, if you're hungry or looking for a meal that is commensurate with the price, this ain't the place to go. "

  • "We were very disappointed. It looked more like a fast food restaurant. Within the hour we were gone. When we ordered The appetizer it was there in 2 minuten?!? Food was nor that great and they smashed the plates on your table. If you want a Nice romantic diner, mr. Chow is NOT The place to be. "

  • "went a year ago to Mr. Chow at Miami. it waa amazing. tought that NY would be even better. poor quality food. lobster tasteles, horrible beef. very expensive considering the lack of food quality."
    Dined on 5/14/2014
  • "Wow the Peking duck was amazing, service great. Had friends in from California, great choice. No bar to speak of for pre-dinner drinks, only a few seats, big flower pots in the way of standing or sitting. Stop in a local bar first then dinner. "

  • "As soon as we sat down we were almost swept into buying a $60 glass of champagne! Very pushy. The food was just ok.. Very bland. I was expecting a lot more flavor. My husband has been to me chows 3 times and loves it but he has gone in big groups where they order a bunch of things and they drink a lot "

  • "We enjoyed the friendly service, the excellent food, the nice artworks on the walls, and the ambiance of Mr Chow, Tribeca. Lobster was exceptional, the fillet mignon was delicious, the wine selection was rich, and for every budget. Overall, the price was high, but worth it."

  • "We had been looking forward to trying this restaurant for a while and it was a real let down. Instead of giving us menus the waiter told us he was going to pick what we were having and when I repeatedly asked to see the menu I was made feel as though I was being difficult. I have food allergies and was feeling a bit unwell so having someone else decide what I eat wasn't an option. I was again made feel awkward when I only wanted a main course and told that wasn't really how they did it. I insisted I would just have my main and he insisted on picking the food for everyone else. The food was poor. The portions were small and the food was not authentic Chinese. The meal was seriously overpriced with no value for money, very disappointing."

  • "I thought it would be similar to phillippe but it wasn't. I finished my food in 10 mins. It wasn't as much food as I expected. I felt like a kid eating that little bit of food. I expect it when it's filet mignon but not when it's this kind of food. I should have just went back to phillippe. The only difference is that the crowd is much younger at Phillippe which can be annoying as well"

  • "We had high expectations & went there for restaurant week after reading the great reviews on open table & Zagat. Upon entering we thought that it must really be a French restaurant (or maybe Latin, judging by the many Spanish & Latin waiters). The food was unimpressive - I've had better shrimp toast at a take-out Chinese restaurant, and the noodles were ok, but nothing special.. Dessert was delivered as vanilla and green tea ice creams (no choice). The restaurant was SO LOUD that we had to yell across the table to have any kind of conversation . . not terribly romantic. The food was rushed. Our entrée was delivered before we finished our entrees. Next time, I'll go to the hole-in-the wall restaurant with reasonable prices and great food."

  • "Here's the problem... The significant, ever-present up-selling (without letting you know the price) is insidious and insulting. The tables are on top of one another, and even that can be tolerated, if they staff were considerate and cheerful about it. Sadly, they are just rude and annoyed. (I asked my server for a non-alcoholic beer, and he looked as if I had two heads and annoyingly looked away and said "no, why would you want that?"). I even asked him "are you annoyed with me?" But in general, the staff care less about you unless you are well known or a celebutant. It's really all rather insulting. Food is quite good. Really..."

  • "Mr. Chow (Tribeca) is a good restaurant. I attended during restaurant week and the menu selection really met my expectations. The service however was difficult to deal with. My guest and I were sat at a table in a very tight spot (almost as if they created more and more tables to support the restaurant week crowds), there were no intermediate checkups on how my guest and I were doing on food and drinks, and after being offered an alternative for a seafood-based dish, the alternative dish was never brought to our table. I know the restaurant can and does do better, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the Midtown East location is a bit more engaging with their customers."

  • "we had a perfect meal the other night. I used to find the food downtown was different from uptown in execution even though the menu was the same. uptown was always better. now I find that the food is much more like uptown. the chicken sate downtown used to be so sweet it was almost like having dessert. now it's the way it should be."

  • "In summary: if you have a food allergy DO NOT eat here. The very first thing that we said to the waiter was that I have a tree nut allergy. I go out to eat a lot, and I usually try to just order things without tree nuts in them to be safe, but the waiter insisted that we all try the tasting menu. We agreed to do so, but stressed the fact that I had an allergy. When the first dish arrived, it was a shrimp appetizer covered in walnuts. After pointing this out to the waiter and expressing our concern, a few minutes later they brought to the table a chicken entree with walnuts. After now expressing even more concern to the staff, they brought a chicken dish and told us it was ok because it had peanuts, but they were cashews. Awful experience."

  • "Mr Chow was in a hurry Friday night! The food was on the table thirty seconds after ordering and kept coming at pace. So we were in at 7 and out by literally 8:30. I had fun with my group of 7 but would have liked to linger w my drink a bit to chat before food was served. I attribute this to restaurant week."

  • "The food is without equal - delicious and very unusual but you could see that great pains were taken with its presentation. The staff is interested and helpful without being overbearing and hovering. One of our party used a walker and staff was extremely attentive to her. Have never seen staff in a restaurant so helpful. Very expensive but waiter took pains to combine our dishes to save us money. The expense is forgotten with the quality of the food."

  • "Yes, Mr Chow's food is off the charts great. Four of us were lucky enough to be there on Restaurant Week and it was amazing. Drinks waiter(black jacket) was the one real downer. Curt and inattentive, an uninspiring beginning to a much anticipated dinning experience. This guy was bad. He'd take one persons drink order and leave. Slip the drink on the table and not ask or wait to see if anyone else wanted a drink. Eventually we got 4 drinks. Our waiter (white jacket), on the other hand was as fine as the food. Just what a restaurant of this quality would have to complete the diner's experience; helpful, nice, made great suggestions, pleasant yet not overly solicitous, didn't hover yet was there exactly when we needed him then discreetly gone."

  • "Although the restaurant is Very Chic and the service was up to par ... The Food was Over Rated!!! I was very disappointed with my dinner. Appetizers were okay ... But I tried to play it safe being that it was My first time here.. I got chicken breast.. It was rubbery and no real taste to it. My boyfriend had the fish that he only took one bite of. The only good thing I can take away is that if your into name dropping NeNe Leakes of the ( RHWOA) was dining there on this particular night . If your into that then this the restaurant for You as I'm sure many interesting people pass thru there. As for me don't think I'm going back .. If I'm gonna spend that kind of money I want to fall in love with what Im eating!"

  • "Went here for restaurant week. The food was great but what really impressed me was the attentiveness of the staff especially during dinner on a Friday night."

  • "3 of my friends and I went on a Friday during Resurant week to see what the resturant was all about. We ordered from the pre fixed menu. We tried everything on the pre fix menu except the tofu salad. The chicken satay was ok, the sweet and sour pork was ok...pretty much everything was just blah. I've had better food at a takeout Chinese food restaurant than at mr. chows. And drinks are expensive. My friend bought an amaretto sour for $15. I would recommend people to not go here during restaurant week. It's not worth it. Oh yeah it was crowded but that is to be expected during a Friday night. Finally note-don't get the beef with shepherds purse. The beef's texture is odd."

  • "I attended Mr. Chow' s during restaurant week because I knew on a regular night I would not be able to afford dinner here. I arrived to my reservation late, but was immediately accommodated. I wasn't aware that the food served for restaurant week was family style but that was okay. The food was very different from what I am accustom to but it turned out great. So much so, I am afraid to eat from the neighborhood chinese restaurants. Desert was also great; we were given a mixed berry tart, sherbet and ice cream, and chocolate mousse cake. Our waiter, who's name escapes me, was also great. He never left our water glasses empty, was extremely helpful in explain the dishes, and provided us with another chocolate mousse free of charge!"

  • "Though the wait staff was very attentive - we never saw a wine list nor a menu - and though we had reserved for Restaurant Week, when our waiter described the family style service and indicated that we would be served 4 appetizers and 4 main course and then offered to select the items for us, based on our food preferences / allergies he never mentioned that he was selecting items from the main menu not the restaurant week menu, nor the premium pricing for the Peking Duck he suggested. When the bill came at the end of the evening, we were outraged to see a food charge for more than $250 instead of the $38+ restaurant week promotion, and further outraged when our waiter was unable to make any accommodation in the charge."
