Diner Reviews
  • "Some of the finest cuisine in the BayArea. Up there with any 5 star restaurant, but at an affordable price."

  • "I went for my birthday and had their Bison Short Ribs. They were amazing. Also, had their Caesar Salad, which was also very flavorful. Other plates I sampled at the table were the prawns and scallops and the glaze on the pork chop. Also both very good. The bar was okay. The drinks seemed to fluctuate from strong to light. We had dessert and the desserts were all very rich. A little overpowering all in all. So, for main courses and "what's for dinner," you can't go wrong. Don't expect too much from the bar or dessert. Also know the prices are high and ask to sit in the Forrest Room."

  • "What can I say! Keep coming back to sample as much game as possible. Elk Medallions, Wild Boar Shanks, Bison Sirloin - so far, so good! Want to try their Rack of Lamb but more exotic temptations abound! Will definitely return and either be surprised by the daily game menu or settle on an item on their standard menu. Either way....delicious! And the atmosphere of dining in the enclosed patio looking out at redwood trees is a soothing plus!!"

  • "Mountain House well worth the drive. Menu speical varies and always difficult to choose. But, never disappoineted. Try It."

  • "I took my parents to the Mountain House for the first time and they loved everything about it. We were seated in the "outdoor glassed-in balcony" area, and it was like sitting in an elegant tree house! My Dad and I ordered the Caesar Salads (with anchovy), and it had a very intense flavor but was delicious. My Mom also enjoyed her beet salad. My Dad and I also ordered the same entree: the elk medallions with garlic-mashed potatoes (and vegetables). We both adored the flavor and tenderness of those medallions, which we felt were very generous portions. My Mother thoroughly enjoyed her halibut with rice pilaf and assorted vegetables. We ended the dinner with two scrumptious desserts: blueberry turnover with lemon curd and creme brulee!"

  • "We arrived right on time for an 8pm reservation and headed to the check-in area. We waited for >10 minutes just to check in, with the host, Jerry, ignoring us on purpose every time he walked by. It was awkward and borderline rude, but the ambiance was nice and we were excited to eat -- especially since I'd heard it was quite good! Once we were seated (after a further "on deck" period to wait for our reservation to be ready), things flowed fairly smoothly. Our server, Brett, seemed like a nice guy but lacked in polish. The supporting waitstaff were attentive and quick with bread, water, clearing, etc. Food was good, but not worth the price. My elk medallions were the best, but at $37 for two small medallions they were pricey. Overall, meh."

  • "July 5th An 8:30 reservation. Service was poor at best. Pork chop over-cooked. Halibut was excellent. Waiter was nowhere to be found. Desert was Strawberry rhubarb was awful and portion was tiny. Not what we're accustom to at the Mountain house."

  • "We have always had a wonderful experience a Mountain house. We have gone there for special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries, and Valentines Day. The menu and daily specials have a lot of varity. The staff is friendly and attentive. Don't miss the cream brûlée."

  • "We go to Mountain House fairly often, usually for a specific event (birthdays, other celebrations). I almost always order the rack of lamb because it has been uniformly great. Tonight was different: the lamb was seriously charred/burned. Our waiter Rick offered to take it back but I decided I didn't want to hold up dinner for too long. This was a mistake. I should have sent it back and wired for a properly prepared rack of lamb. I'm not sure what our future holds regarding special dinners at Mountain House. . I'm not sure I'll order them again."

  • "the only criticism I have, and I have frequented this restaurant on many occasions, is that the patio/garden room is a bit cool for good dining. My wife and I love having dinner in the open room with the windows but maybe space heaters provided for those people who get cool would be appropriate, because the windows tend to make the room cooler than the main dining room. Shouldn't have to eat dinner with a jacket on. other than that the food is excellent and ambiance is great."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by this place because it's literally in the middle of the forest. I couldn't imagine we would've had such a fine dining experience! The food was amazing& the atmosphere gorgeous! it looks like a scene out of the movie Twilight"

  • "To start with the staff was soft spoken and very smooth and easy. All questions were answered. Menu items came in correct time intervals. The food was excellent in taste and presentation. Most important was the fact that we were give a table for 2 at the fireplace with fire burning because of my wife's birth day. The room was quiet with people conversing in low tones. This made for the evening to be most relaxing. Much more so than some places in Saratoga that are far more expensive yet are filled with screaming and loud talking young groups. Totally in appropriate. All in all, Mountain House was a great find for a relaxed dinner and possibly a drink after wards at the bar. The menu is Unique and wonderful."

  • "This is a very pleasant place for dinner on Skyline Blvd. Friendly and attentive service and lots of game on the menu. I had the Elk Osso bucco special and it was delicious. My wife had the bison steak, which she also enjoyed. (There is fish on the menu for those who are not fans of red meat). The tables are a reasonable distance apart so I never felt like I was part of someone else's conversation. I mention that because that is an issue at a lot of Silican valley restaurants these days. Thus, the whole evening was enjoyable and we plan to return."

  • "Took the wife out for a nice dinner and we were not disappointed. Service, view, food all great. I like the secluded feel of the place in the middle of redwoods. It has a very relaxing feel."

  • "This was a place that we had passed on Skyline Dr. for many years and wondered about. My wife's office mate had said she and her husband often went there, and really liked the food and ambiance. We finally went for a special occasion, and loved it. The food and service were excellent. The ambiance was great - a restaurant in the Redwoods in the mountains. It was also quiet, which made it really nice for conversation. It's the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy a great meal and great company. It's not what has become common and somewhat cliched in the Bay Area - the high energy, noisy ultra modern decor. This definitely has the rustic mountain feel. Great game menu blended with some fusion dishes that make it interesting."

  • "We came here for my sons B-day dinner. As usual it was great. We started offwith the tuna taco's and calamari. The calamari was very good as were the taco's. My girlfriend and I had the grilled salmon with a dill sauce and the wasabi potato pancake. it was very good. My father had the stuffed chicken, he enjoyed it as well. The birthday boy had the Bison sirloin with a pepper crust. It was awesome. I tried the bread pudding and i must say it was the best i've ever had. We will continue to come to the mountain house cause we just love this place."

  • "We were here with 7 for a b'day celebration. Everyone enjoyed the food & service immensely. Noise level was high, unfortunately, due to another party of probably 20 in the same room. Waiter handled as best he could.pam'njay"

  • "Took 45 min for the calamari to come. Then another 15 min for the soup to come. But what upset me the most was that the party that came after us got their food first. Although ours came after theirs, the waitress should at least switch the order. Anyways, the food was great, but we were disappointed about the overall experience."

  • "A pleasant setting in the woods. Pork chop with cherry comport tasty; bread pudding a beautifully refined version that made the meal memorable. We were there on a busy Saturday evening, and the wait staff was spread a bit too thin. Understandable on a busy evening, but--next time we will try a week night."

  • "This place is about 1 hour 20 min from our house so we usually only go twice a year because it is so special. Everything; service, food, ambiance, atmosphere and view are spectacular. If you live on the SF peninsula or in Silicon Valley, I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Be prepared for a winding drive through the redwoods to get there...we see wildlife everytime! The food is delcious and the service is top notch. Two different rooms to choose from: 1) Enclosed 'sunroom' that looks out into the forest or 2) grand room with a fireplace. You can't go wrong!"

  • "Had the Venison, while my father had Elk. Very well-prepared. Excellent service. We were seated in the windowed ceiling/wall patio. Literally felt like you were sitting in the Redwoods. If you want to impress a girl, or any type of guest really, this place is a major find. Highly recommend."

  • "We always enjoy coming to the Mountain House. They have a wide selection of meats that you cant get at your regular place, Elk, Venison,Quail, Rabbit and sometimes Buffalo. I always enjoy theGrilled Salmon over wasabi potato pancake. The service is always top notch and the view from the sunroom is nice. This place makes you feel as if you've left the bay area and are out on vacation in the back country."

  • "For those looking to cross off Wild Game from their Bucket List, this is the place. 3rd time here. Have had Elk Medallions, Venison Filet and now Boar with a Sun Dried Cherry Port Wine Sauce, Smashed Sweet Potatoes & Sauteed Veggies. Impressive Wine List and Desserts to die for. Get there early for the enclosed patio with a majestic view of tall Redwood Trees! The ambiance is superb - as is the food & Service. Enjoy an adult beverage before dinner gazing at a wood burning fireplace in the entry-way bar. Great place. Can't wait to return!"

  • "Last year, we had for the first time, dined at the Mountain House. (My search with Open Table led me to find Mountain House). We took our friends to celebrate Nile's 86th birthday. We were thoroughly impressed!!! Our neighbor celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary---and we again felt that Mountain House would be the special restaurant to help with another celebration. (They went on a cruise to celebrate). At each occasion, our guests were very impressed with the ambiance, food and the overall decor and noise level. High commendation goes to Jerry, our waiter. He was on the "ball". He was pleasant, handled his service with dispatch and personable. We will gladly endorsed Mountain House."

  • "I've been wanting to dine here for a long time. It's a more than beautiful setting - fittingly, in the Mountains. We sat in the atrium surrounded by glass which makes you feel like you're dining amongst the trees. The food was delicious, in particular desserts are outstanding. The service was the only drawback, and while it wasn't bad, our waitress was lacking personality. She did the job but wasn't particularly friendly or engaging - certainly not horrible service, but disappointing given how everything else was above par."

  • "The atmosphere is great, but the kitchen is slow and sometimes it's hard to flag down your server (they are covering too many tables). The wine list is limited but quite good. The food can be particularly good, especially the wild game. The preparations with a bit of fruit, like mango, or a sweet sauce just seem trendy and don't work. When Mountain house sticks to core wild game, traditional meat preparations, or a tasty fresh trout, you can't go wrong. The creme brulee is...perfect. If you're old school, the butterscotch pot au creme is a treat though a bit on the salty side. Cannot beat the location for escapism. Sit in the "sun room" in the summer and cozy up to the fire in the main room in the winter."

  • "I ordered the lamb with pilaf and veggies. The lamb was covered with a sweet mint sauce that overpowered the flavor of the lamb. I never actually tasted the lamb, though it was cooked to order. The pilaf was more like mushy tri-colored pasta; I was shocked they would put that item on a plate. It tasted and looked like baby food pasta, just terrible. The veggies could have been good but the taste of cooked red bell peppers were pervasive. My kale salad was great. The fried wontons were just ok - more something I'd expect at a bar and grill for half the price though. The pork/shrimp filling was over blended so there was no texture left and the flavors blended too much into a rather bland concoction. No need to return to the mountain house. "

  • "We love the Mountain House for very special occasions. It is pricey, but the beautiful mountain drive there and home (Saratoga), the setting, the service, the ambiance, and even the cost are all part of marking the specialness of the evening. There are redwoods just outside the enclosed patio so you feel you are outdoors. The fire side room is softly lit and very cosy, or romantic, depending on your company!. The food is not the usual fare and is delicious. There are lots of choices, all presented beautifully. We also occasionally like to eat in the front room where the ambiance is casual. There is a small bar, or you can order a few items of food and sit at round wooden tables, or near the fireplace."
