A word from Motor Supply Company Bistro
Located in the historic Congaree Vista with a heated patio and free valet parking, Motor Supply has been serving progressive, New World cuisine using classic French culinary techniques for over 20 years. Lunch, dinner and brunch menus change daily, featuring contemporary American, French, Italian and Asian cuisine. We are Columbia's foremost "farm to fork" restaurant, working sustainable farms and an almost exclusively local larder of produce and meats. Seafood is caught off of the Carolina coast, and all of our stocks, sauces and desserts are made on site, including our charcuterie, with house-made sausages, bacon, country pate, and rillettes, all the way down to the pickles and mustard. Our early 19th century, solid-oak bar with marble columns, imported from Europe, serves 180+ fine wines (Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, 2006-12), an extensive list of imported, domestic and high gravity beers, as well as house-infused spirits, handmade bitters, and barrel-aged cocktails.Continued

  • "The food was outstanding, the wine selection was impeccable, and the service was prompt and friendly!"

  • "Motor Supply is one of my favorite restaurants in Columbia. The menu changes often enough to keep things fresh and the food is always delicious. They have an amazing wine list as well."

  • "We have been visiting infrequently for several years. The menu changes daily, and is always good. Took foodie friends there and they really enjoyed the food."

  • "When in Columbia, I try to have dinner here. It's the best in town and never disappoints."

  • "Never disappointed with motor supply! Incredible food, great service! The valet parking is super nice, it's usually such a hassle to park in the Vista. One of the absolute best restaurants in Columbia."

  • "Motor Supply Bistro has great food and a great ambiance. I would recommend it , but you had better bring lots of money. I will say the menu was very creative and the food was excellent. But you had better be prepared to pay for it !"

  • "I am never disappointed with Motor Supply. Their menu changes daily and it is always fun to try out something new. My daughter and I went their before a show at the Koger Center. The appetizers looked so good that we just stuck with a very nice salad, some appetizers and a couple glasses of fine wine. It is our favorite restaurant here in the capital city."

  • "A gem of a restaurant to be sure. Very fresh food from the area, which is hard to find. A new menu every day which even changes from lunch to dinner so it is always a surprise. If you are curious, you can check Motor's website for Today's Menu. The service was perfect. Quietly refilled water glasses without interrupting conversation. I guess the only drawback would be the prices (although understood). I would frequent Motor Supply Bistro for special occasions, but wish I could go much more often! Drove 1.25 hours for the experience and it was worth it!"

  • "Went for our 5 year wedding anniversary not looking for anything too fancy. The hostess greeted us when we arrived and took us outside stating "this will be your table". We were surprised we weren't asked if an outside table would be okay, especially with a reservation. We weren't pleased, but sat anyways thinking it wouldn't be too cold...It was. But we asked and our server turned on the heaters. Another table complained of the heat and they were then turned off with no mention to us. Food was good, just different than the menu stated. The sugar cured pork was very peppery with zero sweetness. The mashed sweet potatoes and flat rib were great. It was too cold outside, so we skipped dessert. The hostess saw us when we left but said nothing."

  • "It has been about 4 years since we last went to Motor Supply. It was good then, but now it's better. We were visiting our daughter and went to dinner with her and another family. The seven of us enjoyed our meal, from cocktails and appetizers to dessert. Service was very good too."

  • "I am a very frugal type of guy. It almost pains me to spend $30 on dinner and a drink, but my wife wanted to go for her birthday, and I can truly say that it was worth every penny. I had a sugar cured pork porterhouse over a bed of grits (not a combo I would have chosen, but it was excellent) and it was awesome. My only complaint is that the seating was a little close, but they do a good job with the space they have. We look forward to going back."

  • "We were eating early. ((5:30 pm); restaurant staff was in a meeting until 5:45 pm; hostess seated us, but when waiter was finally available, he did not seem all that into serving. Not involved or motivated about sharing menu highlights. Great food, cool outdoor courtyard, wait staff needs incentivizing."

  • "Initially, we were not sure about the quality of the restaurant since we never visited the place before. Slight trouble locating it due to traffic congestion in the area. Menu not totally accurate but corrected by waiter. Swordfish was cooked perfectly and they willingly substituted veggies. Porkchop came out nearly raw but when a new one emerged from the kitchen it was excellent and was well-seasoned. Chocolate peanut butter pie was tasty. Apple after dinner drink was very good. Zin dinner wine was exceptional. All in all it was a very good experience and well worth the visit. We recommend it despite the few little problems."

  • "For our 14th anniversary, we celebrated with our first visit to Motor Supply. From when we entered to when we left; the interactions with hostess/servers made us feel welcome and appreciated. The appetizers (quail and shrimp) were very good and our entrees were cooked/seasoned well and the desserts were the perfect way to finish the visit. Will be back soon to MSC!"

  • "We rarely get such a treat as we did Last sunday at Motor Supply Co Bistro. We were just amazed with Josh at the bar. He is a true Mixologist, for such a young man he is well versed in spirits. We are old school and do not like our liquor dumbed down with soda and juices. I had a Vieux Carre , the best ever hands down. It was like going back in time and enjoying the real art of blending and accenting tastes and smells. Kudos to Josh. If we are ever back in Columbia this is a definite stop."

  • "I went here for my birthday with some friends and we really enjoyed it! We ordered the scallops as an appetizer which was wonderful!!! We still talk about that today. I ordered the pork chop which was thick, juicy and deeeeeelicious!!! My friends ordered a pasta dish...sad to say they weren't as thrilled with their meal as I was with mine. Their portion size was not big enough for the amount of money they paid. Overall though, they enjoyed it."

  • "On our visit the waittress spilled drinks on my husband and my friend. After spilling the drinks, yes she apologized; however, I felt they should have offered some small act of kindness by taking care of their drinks. The spilled drinks got on my husband's cell phone and he had to dry it out and wet up my friend's pants. Now, the food was good and I will definitely be back; however, customer service means a lot to me and I would have given a higher rating for service if it was just a small suggestion of something for the inconvenience of getting wet and my husband having to take his phone apart. Please note we drove from Albemarle, NC to eat at Motor Supply, Inc. and hang out with friends. Increase customer satisfaction; important."

  • "We came to Columbia to visit our daughter who attends USC and took her and some of her friends to dinner. They picked the place and we loved it. Food was very good, with diverse and interesting choices. Crowd was energetic. We had a great time. We'll be back."

  • "I don't want to devolve into hyperbole, but from the beer to the cheese and charcuterie plates to the melt in my mouth flat rib, the experience was perfect. My colleagues and I joked about intentionally missing our flight the next day so we could come back. The service was knowledgeable and super friendly and our server was a credit to her profession. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "My husband and I are new to SC (from CT) and Columbia. This restaurant was recommended and certainly gave us a fantastic meal. The server, Ron, was excellent. The only negative was our table was in the bar area which got very noisy. Luckily it was at the end of our meal otherwise it would have been very annoying. we will definitely dine their again."

  • "Celebrated a late Valentine's Day at Motor Supply on Tuesday since my husband and I both had scheduling conflicts on the actual Valentine's Day. The food and service were impeccable (as we have come to expect)."

  • "the scenery was simple but very nice. The food was very well put together, great service, great for special occasion or just a nice dinner. a little pricey but that is to be expected. Will be returning!"

  • "The food was great, yet -- When we ordered the pork rib, the waiter warned us that it would be awhile because it takes a long time to cook. It came out so quickly the waiter did a double take. Literally -- our food came out before they brought us the bread basket. For a upscale eatery like this, we did not expect that. The food was good but to come out that fast it must have been sitting in the window or sent back by someone else. Waiter was great though (definitely experienced), wine list was impressive."

  • "Great food, great service and all in a fun atmosphere. Even the valet made a difficult situation seem easy with just a smile and nice words. Will definitely go again."

  • "I have dined here around ten times and I have never been disappointed. The menu is altered everyday, thus I've never had the same dish but have always been impressed. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was perfect. We dined on the back patio area where the atmosphere was romantic and intimate. Since I really wanted a fish dish but hated olives... I asked if I could have the sauce switched, I didn't want to offend the chef but I HATE olives. The server was knowledgable and the chef was extremely accommodating and gave me exactly what I wanted and it was delish!!! Highly recommend this place"

  • "From the minute I'm greeted by the hostess you get Spectaculor service. The waitress was very friendly and the food was Devine !!! My husband and I love this quaint spot!!!"

  • "And glad we finally did. From the start, the valet was courteous, even though reserving at late hour, they ushered us in, sat us, wined and dined us, food came a little too quickly and waitress noted and corrected rest of meal timing( even though it was near last seating). Great ambience, wife says she can't wait to go again...and me too. Fine dining, fine wine and the price was right for everything. We are looking forward to their harvest week!"

  • "It was an outstanding dining experience. Every course was superb and wonderfully prepared with great care and experience. It is not often that every course hits all of the right notes, but this restaurant definitely did not disappoint. From the appetizer to the desert, we enjoyed the food very much. We usually bring home a doggie bag from dining, but that was not the case here. We ate the whole thing! We will definitely dine here again. Even the wine list was exquisite. The waiter was also outstanding adding already to a stallar dining experience."

  • "Have not been to Motor Supply in years as we are from out of town -- we joined another family with our daughters to celebrate. The food was as good as always -- love the daily menu of fresh items and how it is prepared. We did feel a little rushed by our server -- don't know if they needed to flip our table or if it was just high energy. Will return again soon."

  • "Exceptional dining experience! Top notch, attentive service and phenomenal food. Extensive wine/beer list, something for everyone. PEI mussels and charcuterie as appetizers. Mussels perfectly steamed and a savory array of meats and accompaniments. Order the ribbon ribeye with oyster mushrooms! You won't be disappointed. I wish this was an entree! Only downside: salad with bacon at $14 seemed grossly overpriced for the portion size. Pork porterhouse as an entree-- perfectly cooked and sweet potatoes were outstanding. Skip dessert. Creme brûlée was underwhelming, custard too thick and sugar crust thin. Overall, a great dining experience and worth a trip!"

  • "We chose MSC based on the menu and the fact it seemed to include a fair amount of locally sourced items. While the menu seemed fairly sophisticated, the final product left much to be desired. I noted I don't care for sweet potatoes, and the waitress assured me that would be no problem to substitute. When my entree arrived it was essentially a large pork chop sinking down in a bed of sweet potato souffle. Waitress was a bit smug to boot, and never noticed or at least never acknowledged the sweet potato snafu. Sweet potatoes aside, the food was marginal. The only saving grace was the ambiance; the place was quaint and filled with beautiful people. Apparently good looks aren't synonymous with discerning palates."

  • "The biggest mark against this experience was the patio placement we had on a cold night.. .even with warmers it was too cold to be comfortable. With a reservation made well in advance it would have been nice to be seated inside or to have known we'd be placed outside. The food is always solid to me -- still waiting to have a fantastic meal here .. certainly have never had one to match Terra... but as a second choice on nights when Terra is closed or not available, this is usually a solid backup. Just not when it is 25 degrees and you are on the heated patio!"

  • "We found this place through Open Table and were pleasantly surprised to find that the reviews were right on...great food! We were dining after my daughters graduation from Basic Training at Ft Jackson, and everyone was so supportive and nice to all of us. Great service too!"

  • "Most of the time if you see the word "bistro" you know it will be expensive. This restaurant is true to that rule. The food is gourmet and the menu changes daily according to what the chef finds fresh. Not a good place if you are vegetarian (couldn't find anything to take home to my daughter who is a veggie). You will have to get the server to translate the menu, but it's good food for the adventurous. Our party of 4 cost over $150 but all four of us had a drink (1 wine, 2 beer and 1 cocktail) and two desserts. My salad was $9 (and about as good as the one at Mellow Mushroom). Overall, I would recommend it for special occasions unless you just have money to burn and then you could go every week!"

  • "Eating at Motor Supply Company was just an "ok" culinary experience. Nothing to rave about, unfortunately. My appetizer arrived too quickly and it was only slightly warm and bland. My main course of duck confit and a house made sausage was plated with too much sweet mashed potatoes. Not noteable. On a positive note, my husband had the house made charcuterie and the pate was outstanding. He also had tile fish on a bed of mushy jasmine rice (??!!). When we questioned this, we were told that it was meant to be that way, heavy on the cream and butter. Risotto would have been too difficult to serve. ....What?! Service was good. Valet parking service was excellent."
