  • "It's a nice scenic drive from San Francisco here; our first time with an out-of-town guest in the evening. The clam chowder is excellent, as are the beer battered onion rings. Watched the sun go down, and passed on dessert this time. Everyone's dinner entree were good, can't claim they were especially outstanding, but we did enjoy the experience."

  • "For a romantic evening meal, this place has it all. A downstairs bar with an open patio area, also dog-friendly if you care to take your bow-wow with you. You can sit by the fire with your pooch and watch the sun set while sipping cocktails and munching on a meal, or take it inside for a quiet delicious meal with an uninhibited view of the ocean waves. Book your reservation using OpenTable and you are sure to get the best seat in the house!!"

  • "I was skeptical to go there because I thought it was too much of the ghost hype. We got an outstanding table with a phenomenal ocean view and the food was really good. I would be happy to go back and will tell people to give it a try."

  • "My wife and I usually spend a weekend near the ocean for our anniversary. Half Moon Bay is among our favorites. The Moss Beach Distillery is a short ride away on the ocean in a residential neighborhood. It reminds me of a roadside bar from years ago, which it was. The current owners have modernized it, but still keep some of the historical flavor. Looking out at the ocean while dining is always a plus, even when it's foggy and the Distillery has lots of large windows. The food options are varied and offer something for just about everyone."

  • "I think dogs eat better food in the Bay Area. There is nothing but the view here."

  • "We stopped by on a foggy night with the kids; hadn't been here in years. The staff was really friendly, which was the only positive thing I have to say unfortunately. The menus was tired, fish choices were mostly battered. I had pasta primavera since I couldn't find anything else to eat. The veggies appeared fresh but the taste had been cooked out of them. The basil was added too early to the dish, so the flavor and color were cooked out. My husband had a tuna sandwich which he said was greasy. I can't remember what my kids ate; the kids menu wasn't that great. The decor was very, very tired. The carpet is fraying and is an outdated blue. It is sad what this place has become. We won't be back."

  • "We had a nice, relaxing lunch and enjoyed the view. Definitely recommend making reservations if you want a table by the window. The restaurant opens at noon and there were probably 10-15 people waiting in line for the door to open. Clam chowder is very tasty. We also split a spinach salad which was very good too. Service was very good as well."

  • "Great spot, atmosphere, history, service, food, menu, ocean bluff view and pricey, but we knew that going in."

  • "We go here mostly for the view. The food is good, service is good. Very tasty clam chowder. Book a reservation so you don't have to wait and so you can get a window seat."

  • "We went there on the basis of excellent reviews. For openers, it was not terribly clean, and the service varied. The real problem was the food. We ordered "Captain's Plate", a variety of fried sea food. The oil it was fried in had seen better days. We mentioned this to the service person when we were paying (twice) and she didn't even acknowledge that we had said anything! The place has a wonderful view and a great outdoor area, so it is a place for a drink and a snack and then move on to a restaurant that cares about its food."

  • "You can't beat the view, the bartenders were great! The building needs to be updated, cleaned, new carpet, paint etc. The food was disappointing. Most of it as fried. Being right on the ocean I would expect a great selection of fresh fish. The oysters were good but the rest was mediocre at best. They didn't even have fresh crab and it was in season! It seems the owners have gotten lazy over the years and taken the easy route. My wife and Sister grew up in the area and raved about this place before we got there. They were extremely disappointed on how run down it was and how bad the menu was."

  • "What can I say!!!! The food, atmosphere, ambience, servers and of course the management were spectacular. I took my wife for Valentines Dinner and of course a surprise LEO Diamond which I had previously dropped off with the manager to place at our table upon arrival. The staff was great at helping me with the surprise and the view was great. Price was pretty good as well. RECOMMEND HIGHLY"

  • "Nice meal. Nice view. Very compact....they squeezed too many tables in the space...waitress bumped kept bumping into the back of our chairs (over a dozen times) while trying to serve the table smashed behind us. Very noisy hard to carry on a conversation at our table."

  • "An excellent place for outdoor drinking and watching the sunset. Even inside will do well. BUT, don't expect good food. Fish and chips are good, crab cakes are bad."

  • "Everything went off as planned, no traffic jams, location no hard to find, parking great next to ocean. Res request with ocean view honored. Service was excellent. no need to say more."

  • "Good food, good parking, seated right away with reservations for Sunday brunch, wonderful view, great service. Somewhat pricey and noisy. About $200 for four people with brunch prices ($35 each) for four that included choice of about eight entrees, champagne or juice, sweet rolls, plus one appetizer to share that cost extra, two coffees. Out of town guests were impressed."

  • "Food was very good but the menu has changed alot over the years. Used to be seafood and steak, now it's more of the new California fresh type of restaurant. I miss the old way of dining there."

  • "We had to wait a few minutes for a table by the window, but it was worth it. We had a fabulous ocean view and my favorite waitress, Sue. My husband and I had the Crabcakes Benedict and they were delicious. My girlfriend had the smoked salmon Benedict and loved it as well. The delicious food and endless mimosas and sparkling wine made for a lovely brunch."

  • "My wife had been bugging me to come here for years. Finally we made the Drive from Morgan Hill and we were not disappointed. The view was awesome, our waitress Susan was very nice and on top of things, and the food was great. The story behind the restaurant is also interesting and add to the neatness of this place. After we were done eating we sat out on the Patio and overlooked the Ocean. Overall a little pricy, but would for sure go again."

  • "I found the Distillery while bike riding through West San Mateo County (by accident) 2 or 3 years back. It was a great venue with an outstanding ocean view, fantastic food, outstanding service and outside fireside patio. The restaurant had a story with personality, all of which, off the beaten path. A very unique getaway. I have been going back since for very relaxing weekends on the coast. To my surprize they have been found!! Apparently, AAA Via magazine has written it up. My visit this weekend (03/08/14) was shared with a overstuffed parking lot and 100 of my closest friends. Having said all that, it was still an excellent choice on the coast that I would highly recommend the Distillery to anyone for a great afternoon/evening out."

  • "We had semi-early dinner reservations at 6:15 and our table was ready for us when we arrived, but the place was packed. I would come back for lunch or dinner but not on a weekend. There were several large parties in the restaurant and people with crying babies so I wouldn't classify our date night as romantic although it has the potential to be a romantic place for a sunset dinner overlooking the ocean. Our food was good and our waiter was very nice."

  • "Make a date with some special people for the Moss Beach Distillery. With excellent signage, and amble parking, this lovely, historic building welcomes you with spectacular views of the ocean. Even during the winter months, the feeling inside is cozy and warm, while the wind and rain dazzle on a constantly changing sea. If the view and atmosphere aren't tempting enough, the friendly and competent staff make everyone feel welcome and well cared for. Last, but not least, is a varied menu and tasty, well prepared food. The entire experience made for us a very special occasion. We will be back again."

  • "Hard to beat the panoramic views of the pacific ocean. I recommend coming here on a sunny afternoon/evening to watch the sunset while sipping on some wine, cuddled up to your significant other. The patio is amazing, equip with fire-pits and blankets if needed. Also dogs are allowed on the patio! The food is great with a nice variety. A must if you are in the area."

  • "Another great meal at the Distillery. This was for our anniversary. Food was great as usual. Beet & mandarin salad outstanding. My coquille de mar was scrumptious (this was my second choice as they were out of the petrale sole, but I was not disappointed.) Hubbie had the char-grilled skirt steak & he licked the plate. The wine selections are very nice. I tried the Cuvaisson 2011 chardonnay and loved it. Hubbie is a beer drinker and he loves their beer on tap selections. It was a quiet night and the service was outstanding."

  • "I live in Los Angeles, so it had been more than 20 years since I had been to the MBD. it was just a gorgeous, friendly, magical and I remembered. I used to go there on romantic evenings and those were always beyond perfect. This was my first time being there for brunch. it was incredible. The food was beyond delicious. Just exquisite and all you get for the Prix Fix Brunch menu is WAY worth the price. The view is glorious and the service is prompt and friendly. I felt so well taken care of. I would recommend to anyone and EVERYONE. (And I love that the outdoor patio with the fire pits and blankets provided by the house also has a menu for doggies. how incredibly cool is that?"

  • "My best friend & I come here every year to celebrate our birthday. They have a million $$$ view from the restaurant as well as the patio that is protected from the wind. The patio also has cozy benches, chairs, a fire pit & blankets. I've never had a bad meal here, the clam chowder is excellent as are the crab cakes."

  • "Nice setting but the restaurant interior could use an update. Our Valentine's Day dinner was a set menu priced at $75 per person. The website did not make it clear and we thought you could also order from the regular menu. It was way over priced and the quality of the food was mediocre. The service was good however. We won't return for dinner but the patio with appetizers, view, and dog friendly make a possible repeat if we are in the area anyways."

  • "Sadly, received the wrong dinners our server then scrambled away from the table. She came back to redeliver them to a close by table. I wouldn't be comfortable eating a meal that had been previously delivered to other patrons. There were 3 young gals acting as hostess, none of whom could manage a smile. Desserts, again the wrong order. Told that the tiramisu hadn't thawed in time for dinner service. Thanks for letting us know it was not made on site. Then was served weird super sugary "pina colada" cake. ?? I have been a customer at Moss Beach Distillery for 20 years and I was terrible disappointed. Definitely not a $175 dinner and that didn't even include adult beverages as we don't drink."

  • "Food was pretty good, but the service was very slow, our server said that they were backed up in the kitchen but I think our server forgot to put in the order because people were seated and served before we received our meals. We ordered nothing special, sliders and salad."

  • "My girlfriend and I visited the Moss Beach Distillery 02/13 as an early Valentine's Day Celebration, the restaurant came very highly recommended by my uncle. You can choose to sit outside on the patio, which is dog friendly, but you must the order drinks or food at the bar, there is no waiter to serve you there. We chose to eat our lunch inside and then get some drinks and sit on the patio. We ordered the calamari which was fantastic and then I ordered the sliders and my girlfriend ordered some kind of fish. The food was good but didn't knock my socks off, especially for the price paid. I paid $85 for the appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks. Overall, price was a bit high for some ok food, but overall great place. I would go back."
