  • "Flavorless foods. Angry chef. Decent, but slow wait staff who we're polite but generally lack knowledge of the menu. Wife and I each ordered an appetizer with filet as the entre. Bisque was dull, lacking both savory and herbal flavors. The shrimp topping looked like something thawed from Costco. My wife's salad reminded us of something off of a deli line. Both of the steaks were ordered medium rare. One came out medium and the other rare plus. We thought about sending back but had just seen the chef throw a Hosey fit over someone who wasn't happy with a side of Mac and cheese. Even though the bar was nice we can't reasonably recommend to anyone."

  • "We had been going to Moonshine since we read about it in the paper and it got rave reviews. It used to be you walked in an the bar was packed and the restaurant was buzzing with people. So when we walked in on a summer Friday having not been there in 6 months and it was dead, we thought that was odd, but it was summer. Now we know why - the food has completely slipped. For example, the duck that used to melt in your mouth came to the table grey and old looking and not nearly as delicious as before. The creativity of the specials seem to be totally gone and our favorite dessert - the warm cookie dough that is cooked to order came to the table so quickly that there was no way it was cooked to order. Such a disappointment - won't be back"

  • "The eccentric food took us far away from the center of Millburn. The chef's take on pairing of different flavors had us wanting more. The restaurant is not quite at all and the chairs are a little bit lower than most but overall an outstanding experience. It may have been our first time there but definitely not our last!!"

  • "I will make this as brief and simple as possible. The manager went above and beyond. I ordered the duck dish and was looking forward to it; however, it was not quite what I expected. I will not go into that b/c it does not matter. When the waiter came over to see how we were doing, I expressed my dislike of my food. He proceeded to send over the manager who immediately offered to replace the duck dish with anything else I wanted. Since I also like scallops, I ordered the seared scallops w/ bok choy. It was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed my food. Initially we ordered the grilled octupus which was tender and delicious. I left the restaurant satisfied on all counts."

  • "We have been to MoonShine several times since they opened - just to the bar for girl's nights or drinks and appetizers, to the restaurant for dinner and for group meetings. The service is also outstanding and the food is unique and delicious. Always fun drink specials or creative cocktails to be found and a great vibe!"

  • "My husband and I went to this restaurant before going to the Papermill for a 7 o,clock show on a Friday night. Our reservation was for 5PM. When we arrived at 5, the bar was empty and the dining room was not even open yet. The staff was apparently having their evening meeting prior to starting to serve for the night. Bartender was attentive. We decided to sit at table in bar area and that is where we chose to remain for our meal. Our dinners were good but not great. My husband had the Grilled Spanish Octopus and the Summer Risotto and I had the 8oz Flat Iron Steak with a side of asparagus. We will go back but we will choose to eat off of the bar menu rather than the dining room selections."

  • "Went there for fiancee's birthday dinner on a Sunday evening. Place was pretty dead with only one other table of 5-6 occupied, with one more walk-in later; but that made for a nice quiet ambience and great conversation for us. Everything we ordered was delicious - Moonshine Punch for my drink, Tuna Tartare, grilled spanish octopus for apps; eggplant bisque with lemongrass soup; truffled local scallops gratin & braised short ribs for entrees; warm cookie dough & Profiteroles for dessert. As awesome as the food was, we felt the service was slightly lacking - mainly in terms of speed & timing. Our server though super nice was MIA for longer than anticipated in between each course. Service surely could have been more prompt. 1 point taken away."

  • "I had not been to the restaurant in quite a long time but the experience was great! We were a party of four. We had cocktails first which were great then ordered a bottle of wine for dinner. The wine selection was plentiful and the prices were fair. Dinner was exceptional. We all had the branzino fish - it was well seasoned and delicious! Since we hadn't seen the couple we met - we wound up being the last diners to leave the main dining area. The staff was very accommodating and never rushed us to leave. We will definitely go back again!"

  • "First and last time! Restaurant & service were fine. Crispy gnocchi were swimming in a liquid with chunks of pork on top- it was really chunks of pork FAT, the kind that you can't chew and makes you gag! It was a Monday night perhaps it was a fill in chef, but I'll never know, I won't even give them a second try. I rated the noise level as quiet because there were only 6 others in the restaurant, if full I have no doubt it would be too noisy."

  • "The food was delicious! Best calamari appetizer I have ever had. The duck was amazing, but sadly the accompanying stuffing (or was it potato?) was not. We were seated upstairs in a very nicely decorated room with large windows overlooking the street. Great music. The staff seemed like they had never worked before. First we were offered a table on top of the only other filled table in the room. We asked for another table, as did every party after us. Our server who told us our real server was busy, was unable to pronounce many of the words in the specials. The other busy server never appeared. The busboy asked us repeatedly if we were still "working" when he came to take our plates..."are you finished with your meal" -how hard is that?"

  • "Went for a birthday brunch and was able to make a reservation one hour before. When we arrived, the restaurant was only half full but our table was not ready. We were celebrating and were hoping for a festive atmosphere, but this restaurant is dull, dark and non-descript. The service was dreadful, the kitchen cancelled our ticket for no reason and we waited close to an hour for eggs. Finally, out came the smallest omelettes I've ever seen, hard and inedible and appeared to be some type of fake egg product! We had dinner at the bar about a year ago and had to send food back, but thought it was just an off night so we gave it another try. Still no good. Our waiter was sweet, but don't waste your money, I wish we hadn't!"

  • "Brunch is prix fixe only, but the prices are very reasonable - $20 for an appetizer and entree, and $10 more for unlimited drinks. The bread pudding was absolutely delicious. You HAVE to order that. The deviled crab and crepes were mediocre. And another friend wasn't too happy about the steak dish. Eggs benedict was good though the smoked salmon was on the salty side. The bread pudding really saved the day though. We all joked that we should have just ordered of those each! We would definitely come back just for that and the unlimited drinks. Ambiance is very nice."

  • "5 adults and 2 teens had dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation and sat upstairs, which is a little quieter than down. Salads were fresh, main courses, mostly steaks, were well prepared and tender. When we had almost finished the main course, one of the teens had 2 friends arrive. The waiter seated them with us, rushed their order in the kitchen and were nice about the change. Extensive drink menu. My favorite "Carrie's Martini". This is not an inexpensive restaurant."

  • "The service was actually pretty good - attentive & knowledgeable. The room was not too noisy until a large (12-14) party was seated toward the end of our meal. The food was a disappointment. The bread/cheese appetizer was too salty; the salad shouldn't have even be served - chopped lettuces with a couple of pistachios & flavorless dressing. All three of us had a version of the risotto which was crunchy and bland. The panna cotta was was thick & heavy. Some of the dishes were very good like the beet salad, short rib & special pork roast. Overall, we felt we spent too much for too little. We won"t go back."

  • "My wife and I love this place for it's amazing cocktails and great food. We're vegetarians (but eat fish) and we always find excellent things on the menu. The staff are very friendly and attentive - not always a given. At our last visit, they volunteered to move us to a more quiet spot when a large noisy group came in. They had us moved with all our table items within a minute. We will definitely keep going back."

  • "We have eaten at Moonshine a few times and it has always been very good. I recently had my husband's 50th Birthday party there. We had the entire second floor and brought in a DJ. I can't tell you what a pleasure it was to work with Victor Delapa and his staff. Victor was always quick to answer my calls or e-mails while we were planning. The night of the event the entire staff was super professional and caring about giving the best possible service. We had about 70 people for a cocktail party with passed and stationary hors d'ourves and desert. Everything went perfect! Thank You!!!!! "

  • "It's unfortunate that the service was notably bad because the food was quite good. Dinner for two took over two and a half hours, much of which was spent waiting between courses. We had to ask if they had a coat check - they do, but no one offered it. We had to stop wait people passing by to ask for bread, another drink, etc. Ultimately, when the bill was presented, the waiter forgot to add the dinners. We alerted one of our waiters to the error. He handed it to someone else and it came back corrected without a word of thanks. We could have left without pointing that out, saved over a hundred dollars, and none the wiser. We didn't do that. It would have been nice if someone at least thanked us for our honesty."

  • "Four of us (all over the age of 40) dined here last Saturday night. The food was really impressive. The Gnocchi was light and crispy on the outside and airy inside. Everyone loved their entrees and the drinks were fabulous. The service was perfect - accessible but not hovering. Next time we go I'm going to request a table facing the street. And bring strong reading glasses - it's a bit dark and the menu is small print!"

  • "Went to Moonshine on Saturday with my wife for a rare night out. Free parking around the corner, little bit of a walk given how cold it was. Seated in the back, between the kitchen and the bathroom, which was not as bad as it sounds although the lighting is a little bright over there. Very attentive waiter, which is great, but beyond incompetent in the basics of waitering -- didn't memorize the specials, came to our table chewing on something at one point, tried to refill our Pellegrino glasses with tap water instead of bringing new glasses, didn't bring the bread out for 20 minutes, etc. Food was pretty good -- we had the house salad, beet carpaccio, whole bronzino, calamari, apple cobbler and creme brulee. All was tasty but not amazing."

  • "The main complaint (At least when I went) is that the glasses don't sit on the tables well, they rock very easily. I spilled a water glass, unfortunately towards myself. Service didn't notice, nor did they clean it up. To be fair, I didn't announce it. However, I did clean it up myself, out of my chair, and I was surprised no one asked what happened. No one ever refilled the water either. Additionally, our table cloth stayed soaked the rest of the meal. Other than that, the food was really good and the atmosphere was lively. This isn't a very quiet environment, but it isn't distracting either. A fun establishment that backs it up with class and product quality. "

  • "Although we had a reservation and the restaurant was empty, we were seated practically inside the kitchen. The waiter was unable to explain the wines and neglected to explain the food. Although our the meals themselves were good, everything else outweighed that and we won't be returning."
