Diner Reviews
  • "We go here often. The food is always well prepared and the service pleasant. We'll be back."

  • "I had not been to the restaurant in quite a long time but the experience was great! We were a party of four. We had cocktails first which were great then ordered a bottle of wine for dinner. The wine selection was plentiful and the prices were fair. Dinner was exceptional. We all had the branzino fish - it was well seasoned and delicious! Since we hadn't seen the couple we met - we wound up being the last diners to leave the main dining area. The staff was very accommodating and never rushed us to leave. We will definitely go back again!"

  • "Always an excellent meal! Great service, great atmosphere and one of my favorite restaurants."

  • "First and last time! Restaurant & service were fine. Crispy gnocchi were swimming in a liquid with chunks of pork on top- it was really chunks of pork FAT, the kind that you can't chew and makes you gag! It was a Monday night perhaps it was a fill in chef, but I'll never know, I won't even give them a second try. I rated the noise level as quiet because there were only 6 others in the restaurant, if full I have no doubt it would be too noisy."

  • "Had a great birthday dinner, food was outstanding and the staff was great. Will definitely go back."

  • "Enjoyed brunch - as always! Only thing I don't love is the mimosas - OJ from concentrate & tastes like the frozen kind you get at the grocery store."

  • "This was a nice find. Made the reservation on a lark. Liked the menu and looked like a great place when driving through. Would recommend to others."

  • "I recently went to Moonshine to celebrate my birthday with a few friends. The atmosphere was wonderful, as was the food and service. The menu was filled with unique items & everything we had was phenomenal."

  • "service was gruff, food was good, but they seems like amateurs at the restaurant business, more a bar that is opened early. wouldn't recommend it."

  • "The food was delicious! Best calamari appetizer I have ever had. The duck was amazing, but sadly the accompanying stuffing (or was it potato?) was not. We were seated upstairs in a very nicely decorated room with large windows overlooking the street. Great music. The staff seemed like they had never worked before. First we were offered a table on top of the only other filled table in the room. We asked for another table, as did every party after us. Our server who told us our real server was busy, was unable to pronounce many of the words in the specials. The other busy server never appeared. The busboy asked us repeatedly if we were still "working" when he came to take our plates..."are you finished with your meal" -how hard is that?"

  • "The tuna tartar appetizer was delicious. We sat upstairs which was a little quieter than downstairs. Bar area was loud, but once away from that area is was quieter. Entrees were very good as well. Very enjoyable evening. Waiter was very good as well."

  • "Brunch is prix fixe only, but the prices are very reasonable - $20 for an appetizer and entree, and $10 more for unlimited drinks. The bread pudding was absolutely delicious. You HAVE to order that. The deviled crab and crepes were mediocre. And another friend wasn't too happy about the steak dish. Eggs benedict was good though the smoked salmon was on the salty side. The bread pudding really saved the day though. We all joked that we should have just ordered of those each! We would definitely come back just for that and the unlimited drinks. Ambiance is very nice."

  • "Went for a birthday brunch and was able to make a reservation one hour before. When we arrived, the restaurant was only half full but our table was not ready. We were celebrating and were hoping for a festive atmosphere, but this restaurant is dull, dark and non-descript. The service was dreadful, the kitchen cancelled our ticket for no reason and we waited close to an hour for eggs. Finally, out came the smallest omelettes I've ever seen, hard and inedible and appeared to be some type of fake egg product! We had dinner at the bar about a year ago and had to send food back, but thought it was just an off night so we gave it another try. Still no good. Our waiter was sweet, but don't waste your money, I wish we hadn't!"

  • "5 adults and 2 teens had dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation and sat upstairs, which is a little quieter than down. Salads were fresh, main courses, mostly steaks, were well prepared and tender. When we had almost finished the main course, one of the teens had 2 friends arrive. The waiter seated them with us, rushed their order in the kitchen and were nice about the change. Extensive drink menu. My favorite "Carrie's Martini". This is not an inexpensive restaurant."

  • "The server was very nice and attentive. He explained the menu and specials very well and repeatedly encouraged us to ask questions. The gnocchi and meatball appetizer was fantstic but both of our meals were a disappointment. I had the Bronzino and my date had the wolf fish. Would probably try this place one more time..."

  • "The service was actually pretty good - attentive & knowledgeable. The room was not too noisy until a large (12-14) party was seated toward the end of our meal. The food was a disappointment. The bread/cheese appetizer was too salty; the salad shouldn't have even be served - chopped lettuces with a couple of pistachios & flavorless dressing. All three of us had a version of the risotto which was crunchy and bland. The panna cotta was was thick & heavy. Some of the dishes were very good like the beet salad, short rib & special pork roast. Overall, we felt we spent too much for too little. We won"t go back."

  • "My wife and I love this place for it's amazing cocktails and great food. We're vegetarians (but eat fish) and we always find excellent things on the menu. The staff are very friendly and attentive - not always a given. At our last visit, they volunteered to move us to a more quiet spot when a large noisy group came in. They had us moved with all our table items within a minute. We will definitely keep going back."

  • "Service great - from hostess to servers. Menu great. Food great. Food came out quickly and was cooked really well. "Upscale casual", neighborhood spot. A lot of fun. Would recommend to anyone."

  • "It's unfortunate that the service was notably bad because the food was quite good. Dinner for two took over two and a half hours, much of which was spent waiting between courses. We had to ask if they had a coat check - they do, but no one offered it. We had to stop wait people passing by to ask for bread, another drink, etc. Ultimately, when the bill was presented, the waiter forgot to add the dinners. We alerted one of our waiters to the error. He handed it to someone else and it came back corrected without a word of thanks. We could have left without pointing that out, saved over a hundred dollars, and none the wiser. We didn't do that. It would have been nice if someone at least thanked us for our honesty."

  • "Four of us (all over the age of 40) dined here last Saturday night. The food was really impressive. The Gnocchi was light and crispy on the outside and airy inside. Everyone loved their entrees and the drinks were fabulous. The service was perfect - accessible but not hovering. Next time we go I'm going to request a table facing the street. And bring strong reading glasses - it's a bit dark and the menu is small print!"
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Although we had a reservation and the restaurant was empty, we were seated practically inside the kitchen. The waiter was unable to explain the wines and neglected to explain the food. Although our the meals themselves were good, everything else outweighed that and we won't be returning."

  • "Went to Moonshine on Saturday with my wife for a rare night out. Free parking around the corner, little bit of a walk given how cold it was. Seated in the back, between the kitchen and the bathroom, which was not as bad as it sounds although the lighting is a little bright over there. Very attentive waiter, which is great, but beyond incompetent in the basics of waitering -- didn't memorize the specials, came to our table chewing on something at one point, tried to refill our Pellegrino glasses with tap water instead of bringing new glasses, didn't bring the bread out for 20 minutes, etc. Food was pretty good -- we had the house salad, beet carpaccio, whole bronzino, calamari, apple cobbler and creme brulee. All was tasty but not amazing."

  • "Had been to Moonshine about a year ago, and wasn't very impressed. decided to give it another shot and was happily surprised to find a MAJOR improvement. The food was great and our bartender very accommodating with drink suggestions. I am now comfortable recommending this spot. ENJOY!"

  • "We had dinner early on a Sunday - 6PM. We were seated upstairs, a quiet, sophisticated space that never did get very busy. However, service was excellent and the food was better than good. We selected this restaurant because its menu was a bit out of the ordinary, and it did not disappoint. By the time we left, the fist level was buzzing, very full with people around the bar and eating. My only negative was the music - it was that "techno" kind of jazz that gets repetitive, and I at least, wanted to "change the station.""

  • "I've driven by this spot a few times and never noticed it until I was browsing Open Table a few weeks ago. I can't believe I didn't go there sooner. The ambience is hip, modern, and stylish but not pretentious. The hostess and bartender were friendly, and the waitstaff was very attentive. I went there for my birthday dinner in a group of 6 people and we were seated upstairs (who knew there was even an upstairs?) with a lovely view of Main Street. I ordered the tuna tartare appetizer, Crispy Ricotta Gnocchi with wild boar sausage entree and split the Warm Cookie Dough dessert with my boyfriend. The appetizer was flavorful, the entree was delicious and the dessert was a great finisher. A great find - go check it out!"

  • "OK, we reversed our brunch appetizer & main course to have the crepes as our dessert, and started with Eggs benedict instead. I'm not a complainer but I did have to send the eggs back because the first time they came out the eggs were hard - not at all runny. So they poached us some new eggs, and then everything was perfect! Always a good meal and nice drinks here. The unlimited brunch cocktails for a $10 add-on is hard to pass up!"

  • "We had a great meal here in a very quiet, empty restaurant on a Monday at 6:30. On a previous visit, 8pm on Saturday, things were "festive." Recommend trying on a quiet day if that is your thing. Chris was our waiter and he was about the best server we have had in a year."

  • "Was looking forward to dining at Moonshine. Internet pictures were better than reality. Thought it was more "loungy" for drinks as well, but there was a very small area near the bar for that. Not the worst thing. Dining area was ok, not too interesting- dark, and half of seats against a wall. Worst part was the speed of service. Within minutes of ordering appetizers (and two minutes after drinks) food arrived and it was a horse race from that point forward. Within minutes of clearing the appetizers, the main dish was served on so on. Can't figure out because thee were plenty of tables available. This rush therefore diminished the experience. Overall very good food, but....."

  • "The night was not pleasant at all. There is a lack of communication all around. We were seated in a small area that quickly became mobbed with loud partiers. the manager claimed he didn't know the party would be large. How could he not know? After we finished our appetizer, we were moved downstairs and the wait staff were not told that our order was placed. The DJ's music was so loud that no one could hear each other and the staff could not hear the customers. I would never spend another moment or dime in this place."

  • "Great food- had the ahi tuna appetizer and the stuffed shrimp and ravioli in a brown butter sauce. Really enjoyed my meal. Service was friendly and attentive. Only downsidecwasvthe noise from the bar behind us on the second level- got crowded and folks were standing right against my husbands chair - a little intrusive. I wouldprefervto eat on the first level. It's a cool spot with great food though."

  • "I go to Moonshine pretty often and enjoy it every time. The food is always delicious and it is one restaurant where I'm not hesitant to try something new. I trust that I will have an amazing meal and I am always impressed."

  • "Tried Moonshine for the first time last week and was delighted to find a great new restaurant in the neighborhood. From the friendly welcome at the door, to the efficient, knowledgable service to the delicious food, this place is a winner! The only minor itch is the decor, or lack thereof. The lighting is dark in some places, overly bright in others, and you kind of feel as though you are in someplace where they just moved in and haven't gotten around to decorating yet. The dining room is spare and empty feeling - and the tables aren't special enough to have no tablecloths on them. That said, we will be back for the wonderful salmon, terrific branzino and perfect steak. Welcome to NJ Moonshine, we are glad you are here."

  • "Went to Moonshine Supper Club with two other couples - we were all having a night without kids. The wait staff seated us straight away. Very interesting menu with a good range of choices. Noise level was definitely vibrant, so not the place for an intimate, quiet dinner for two! The food was beautifully presented and delicious. All six meals ordered had each of us very satisfied in terms of the quality and quantity. After dinner we moved across to the lounge bar area for a drink - great little nook in the front with some cozy lounge chairs. Would definitely return here!!"

  • "Really good food and great service. On a Tuesday night there were only about six people in the place. That is why it was quiet. But that aside, really wonderful and creative food."

  • "With all the BYOBs in NJ, it's nice to find a restaurant with a bar that feels new and fun and gets high marks for both. I got the tasting menu and, although it wasn't perfect, it was quite good. The portions were substantial, almost too much. As for the bar, any place with Dogfish Head 90-minute IPA on tap gets high marks from me. Great place to go for a drink and then a solid dinner. The service was fantastic."

  • "Wasn't sure what to expect with "supper club" in the title, but it was great. Good food, nice selection of specialty drinks, nice wine list. Went with a group of ten and it was perfect."

  • "The bar is energetic and is a great place to hang out with your friends. The dining room still has an energetic feel, but is a better choice for dinner and conversation. So many interesting appetizers, it was difficult to choose. Same goes for the entrees. Nice wine selection as well. The energy level in this place is what sets it apart, we'll definitely be going back."
