Diner Reviews
  • "Moonshadows is always the happening spot in Malibu for the view! The food is pretty good, selection is small but there is plenty. There could be more brunch choices! Be prepared to wait an hour for an outside table, reservations or not! There are only so many tables and they don't move fast so if you are starving, eat inside! The view is great from all over!"

  • "This restaurant has never let me down. As usual, the romantic atmosphere, the waves crashing outside, the wonderful window views, were perfect to take my girlfriend for a special second date.....Thanks, again !"

  • "Everything was great, but we got there late and didn't get sat till 10:30. We were only a party of two and the server had larger parties and it was still packed even though we were that late so the server clearly had already made his money for the night and the other larger parties were more money for him than we were so we just felt like he was going through the motions, sometimes almost gruffly. Also, there's a host there too, an older lady with long dark hair that also had a less than subtle way of treating us like we were nobody. I mean I get it, you guys are packed, but this isn't a Hollywood nightclub where I should feel like I know somebody to get treated like I'm wanted there."

  • "My husband & I went here for my birthday celebration. We were seated inside, and our booth was hanging over the water. Watching the waves and water was not only beautiful, but relaxing. Our food was delicious, and the menu unique. We both felt more than pleased with our selections, especially for the price. What made the experience even better was the service. This was some of the best service I have ever had, especially in LA. Our server was knowledgeable, warm, and attentive, and made the experience of going to the restaurant the reason why I will recommend it to people, and why we will go back. The view and food were excellent, but the service was so superb, I would want to request being seated in his section again."

  • "I loved this restaurant. It's an old school place on top of the water, like the tide actually ebbs and flows under the restaurant. Food was decent and the service was great. I think most of the servers are career servers here. The enjoyed the ambiance and the view the most."

  • "Food was very good but the service was interesting. Our waiter did an ok job with taking our order but failed to come back and ask us if we wanted new drinks or check on us. I know this is picky but the person who put our plates down actually handed them to us instead of walking around and placing each one. Someone near us spilled a glass of ice and limes in a walkway and for the next 40 minutes we were there, not a single person picked it up. A few of them stopped to look at it but did not pick it up. The general crowd there was more ghetto than I remember. I don't know if it's bc it was Sat or what but I'll probably opt for a classier place next time."

  • "The only thing wrong with my Sunday afternoon at Moonshadows was my regret that I didn't request outside seating when I made my res! Regardless, great little spot, amazing view without the hoity-toity vibe."

  • "Took our son and his friends here for his 21st birthday and it was a huge success. We were given a booth on the deck with a fabulous view. The scene was lively and the service was excellent. Great cocktails, really good food (from beef to pork to fish), nice wine. Our waitress paced the meal perfectly, took photos and even suggested an additional photo op overlooking the ocean when some other diners had left. All around a great experience!"

  • "Wonderful service; ocean view dining and also outdoor bar/lounge. Sun set behind the mountains- so not visible from restaurant. Valet parking. Honored our reservations exactly on time."

  • "Unfortunately the view could make up for the service which was mediocre at best. My husband and I rarely get to enjoy a night out and the service just ruined the occasion. "Can I get you water or something" ? Is how the meal started off. Right after they sat us they put down a large rowdy business table right next to us which killed the ambiance. I had the short rib which were over cooked and over salted, atleast my husbands dish was good and large enough to share. We were disappointed and next time we will sacrifice the view for something a little more classy."

  • "This was my first time at Moonshadows and that too on a date! The food was terrific. My date had the Chilean sea bass, which was cooked to perfection! I had the Branzino -- again delicious!!! Top that off with well-made cocktails, good service (prompt, helpful and polite) and an awesome view (oh! and the sound of waves crashing right underfoot!)... and this place pretty much has it all. I would definitely go back there."

  • "Moonshadows is definitely my 'go to' restaurant for bringing LA visitors and for special occasions, owing to the lovely views, delicious food, and excellent service. I brought a friend here to celebrate her birthday, and had noted on my reservation that I would love to pre-order their chocolate souffle cake with a birthday candle if possible. They not only brought out the souffle but also a second cake with the candle on it :-)"

  • "Great place for a romantic dinner or anytime you want to dine right on the water. Hip bar scene outside too. Great ocean views from all tables, so no worries if you can't get a window table. Service was excellent. Food wise, my wife's tomato & Burrata cheese appetizer was exceptional. She orders this whenever it is available and this was the best she has had outside of Italy. My tuna sashimi-ish appetizer special was just peculiar (to my taste) but my wife sort of liked it. Her Maine lobster, however, was as good as it gets: sweet, tender, and cooked perfectly. My crab & shrimp ravioli was a bit overcooked and, again, not to my liking (maybe my tastes are just different than the chef's). All in all, we had a wonderful evening."

  • "Food is priced over to the moon and back for simple, tasteless, ordinary food. Waiter, very nice but... Don't go, go to Jack In the Box instead!"

  • "I reserved a table at 2 but unfortunatly I got stuck in traffic and got there 20 minutes late. When I got there I said we had a reservation and we had also requested a table on the balcony. Although we were late I somehow felt they had never reserved a table for us and we had to sit in the small chairs that are first come first serve. However it was a beatiful day and great service i would defeniattly recommend this place."

  • "After making reservations two months in advance, no table was available when we checked in on time. Had to wait 1/2 hour, then only seated after complaining. The most expensive steak ($42) on the menu was over-cooked, and of poor quality. Attempted to use a pre-paid gift Master Card, and the wait staff said they couldn't accept them, although they are accepted everywhere else. The outside bar's glasses were dirty. This is not a fine dining experience, more of a beach bar. On a scale of one to ten, MoonShadows is about a 3+."

  • "We came to Moonshadows to celebrate a college graduation. We had driven by the place for years because the outside is so nondescript, but decided to give it a try after seeing the lovely interior shots on the web site. We were not disappointed. We frequent several of the large coast restaurants like Dukes and Gladstones, but had always skipped Moonshadows. That will not happen again! The menu is short, but has ample offerings for all diners including beef and chicken in addition to a generous seafood list. And you cannot sit closer to the water! We'll be back and are glad to have discovered this gem."

  • "I brought my parents here during their visit from the East Coast. We were early for our reservation, so we had a drink in the bar area. There we encountered Avery, a waiter, who greeted us with a dimpled smile and emphatic personality. When our table became available the hostess warmly said we had a lovely table coming up, lovely it was! We were given a gorgeous window seat in the main room, gazing at the expansive ocean while we ate. Robert, a young bearded lad, was our server, and served we were! He was TOP NOTCH!! He took impeccable care of us all night, providing laughter and quality service - Avery made a few table cameos too! We dined on duck rolls, oysters, scallops, octopus, calamari- each cooked to unparalleled perfection!"

  • "This is a great restaurant for a romantic dinner or dinner with friends as well. Fantastic view and you can feel the waves as they crash under the building. After you get past the lady guarding the front desk - took her a while to find my reservation and she acted suspicious like I shouldn't be there - the service at the bar and table was very friendly and efficient. Food was very good too. I will go there again for sure and will recommend it to others."

  • "We LOVED our server as well as the food and atmosphere. However, I haven't come across a ruder hostess in my lifetime. If it wasn't for the server we probably would have left because of her pompous and curt attitude. She seemed annoyed that we were even there. Sorry we weren't Hollywood royalty but she should learn to treat all the customers the same regardless of who they are. Our server was this adorable Italian man who was incredible and very sweet and we would dine with him again in a heartbeat. We'd love to thank him for making up for the hostess' miserable attitude and giving us an amazing dining experience for our anniversary. He was awesome :)"

  • "If you request to sit outside it can be challenging, they do not hold or reserve tables outside. It's not a gaurentee. They will push you to sit inside, but most people go to sit outside. The DJ spins tranquil beats and the servers are always really sweet! It's an overall great experience! Great place to take people who are visiting from out of town."

  • "THIS is LA's best oceanfront restaurant -- ambiance AND great menu choices. My lamb rack (Night's special) was perfectly cooked a hot, dark pink. Perfect. It's a delicious Mediterranean fare -- so no mint jelly here! My guest's dungeness crab linguini was outstanding. Our vodka dry martinis: perfect again. Service: genuine and congenial; not snobbish. Drink/wine/app + meal = $115 per head. But if you skip booze, can be as low as $40/head. Moonshadows gets 5 Stars not only for the great food and ambiance, but special kudos because it allows LA visitors to enjoy the Pacific with reasonable prices. Oddly for LA, only two other eateries compare for oceanfront -- Gladstones/Geoffrey's -- and Moonshadows exceeds. Blue Lounge? GREAT waiting there!"
