A word from Monument Lane
Monument Lane is a New American restaurant in the West Village that focuses on farm-to-table cuisine. They use seasonal and sustainable products from local farmers and growers have been awarded Slow Food NYC's Snail of Approval for their standards. The menu changes weekly, if not daily, reflecting the restaurant's commitment to showcasing the local harvest.

Established in 2011 Monument Lane takes its inspiration from the area's pastoral past; a time when Manhattan island was rich with salt marshes and grasslands, pure estuaries teamed with mussels and oysters, and acres of apple and cherry orchards bloomed nearby. In the 1700's and 1800's, New Yorkers came to Greenwich Village as a retreat to the countryside; traveling a road named Monument Lane, now called Greenwich Avenue, where the restaurant presently sits.

Diner Reviews
  • "Although it took what I felt was a long time for each course to arrive at the table, the atmosphere is so fun and cozy that we were willing to let it go. Plus, other aspects of the service were excellent. Servers were friendly and helpful, and when a third friend called us mid-meal and wanted to join, the maitre'd had no problem accommodating all of us at a larger, communal table. As for the food, it was worth the wait. Squid was flavorful and cooked just right. The salads were fresh and portions were generous -- even the small plates. Duck confit was tender and melty. Pork belly was just ok, but the blueberry coulis on the side saved the dish. My friend loved his martini (all of three of them!)… We will be back."

  • "Fun and interesting menu. Lots of smaller plates to share. Our waiter was really helpful and patient with our large group of 6. But half way through our meal, when the restaurant got busy he couldn't be found. Took a long time to get someone to clear the plates. After sitting for over 2 1/2 hrs we left without looking at the dessert menu. All that said we plan to return again."

  • "Had a great brunch. Went back for dinner service was not as good in the evening. We waited too long for our entrees."

  • "We really enjoyed the experience. An interesting menu, very well prepared, lots of delightful dishes for sharing. The service was warm and attentive but not intrusive. All in all it was a delightful evening."

  • "The restaurant is charming; bathroom awesome! We especially enjoyed the pork belly and squid small plates. Eggplant fritters were truly awesome. Skip the peanut butter chocolate dessert, but don't miss the bread pudding - one of the best ever."

  • "We had an assortment of small plates, all excellent. Service was relaxed and friendly. Very pleasant atmosphere, a real neighborhood gem with moderate prices."

  • "Lovely country-chic atmosphere and excellent service. Worth a trip for the fries alone. The rest of the food was fine. Only true complaint is the copious amount of potpourri around which, I felt, interfered with the food."

  • "Monument Lane is a wonderful addition to the growing group of delightful, charming restaurants on Greenwich Avenue that offer good food at reasonable prices in lovely spaces. The food was delicious, the service was extraordinarily good, and the outdoor scene is lively."

  • "The atmosphere is very nice but unfortunately the choice of music was a disconnect. Also the music was very loud and the owner refused to lower it (even though at the time of the request, we were the only diners in the restaurant)."

  • "Met a friend for lunch and to catch up. The service and food were very good and we could sit and chat comfortably. We had a very enjoyable visit and a great lunch!"

  • "A memorable experience in every sense. The ambiance, service and the cuisine. we had reservations for 4, but arrived with 5; accomodated us graciously at the "communal table", which turned out to be our exclusively. Our serve was knowledgeable, and attentive without being overbearing. We lingered for over 2 hours, and never felt rushed. Really can't say anything but positives about this place. Oh, yes, they knew from the outset that we were there for a Blackboardeats deal. Not a problem. A definite return..and soon; much more on the menu that was enticing!"

  • "Nice concept for the restaurant using (mostly?) locally-sourced ingredients that were plentiful in New York City when it was still pretty rural- oysters, mussels, fresh cheeses, lots of vegetables, etc. The decor is simple and pretty and the food was good. Perhaps not the most filling meal ever, but everything tasted very fresh and good. Only bummer was the dessert- the "peanut butter cup" was more like a peanut butter moussee with chocolate sauce... no "cup.""

  • "This was our first visit to Monument Lane and we were very impressed on all counts. Everything we ate was delicious and special, right down to the bread and butter. Pork loin with polenta: tender and tasty. Hake with tortilla crust: delicate and delicious. Calamari app: delicious. Almost as important, the service was amazing. This is part of what I dine out for: happy, pleasant people who act like they enjoy making their customers happy. Every person who came to our table was lovely and helpful, from the hostess to the man filling our complimentary sparkling water bottle. The place is also very charmingly decorated and the tables are not too close. Music is not too loud. Everything was pretty much perfect."

  • "Loved this restaurant from the first time I dined and can't explain what took me so long to return. Friendly and attentive service combined with a seasonal and local menu. Can't miss."

  • "We all decided to have the prix fixe lunch for $15 which was choice of soup or salad and then 1/2 portion of the mains. The salad is a house salad and not any of the combinations on the menu. Green salad which had a wonderful dressing. Our mains we all decided on the steak which was accompanied with roast potatoes dressed with feta and a mustard dressing which are divine. The steak was cooked to perfection with a pesto sauce ,again scrumptious. A glass of rose from the finger lakes and tea to follow along with a great service from our waiter made for a perfect lunch. Unfortunately no desserts available for gluten free diners except for the obligatory ice cream. Love the decor ,going to be a favorite spot."

  • "The restaurant is in the West Village - right on Greenwich Ave, near W 12th street, cute block. If the weather were nicer, we would have sat outside. Service is great, noise level is nice for conversation/although we did have to ask for the music to be turned down - food is just fair, we were the first table to be seated for the day, and the waitress came right over to let us know that there were only 1 each of certain items on the menu (although we were the first table to be seated, interesting). I would probably not come back for the food, but perhaps to sit outside for a drink might be nice."

  • "I went to Monument Lane on a Wed with my friend. The chef remembered me, and brought out a sampler of the ribs they make there on Wednesdays. That was extremely kind and thoughtful, and one of the reasons why I love going here. The service is always warm and attentive, and the food is great. I love that they use local ingredients and it's delicious and satisfying. I can bring my friends here and have some great cocktails with our meal, as well as bring my parents here where they feel comfortable. ML also is accommodating with our two Cocker Spaniels, whenever we want to sit outside. We always try to include them when we can, so it's wonderful that ML is a place we can dine outdoors with them! Please keep up the great work!"

  • "Always bringing something new and interesting to the menu, whether for entrees, starters, or drinks, and keeping the best of the best (may they never, ever, ever lose the escarole and kale salad - it's a staple for me)."

  • "I went for a Father's Day brunch and it couldn't have been nicer. The staff are as nice and accommodating as can be. The food was great, the restaurant had a nice energy level. I would definitely go again."

  • "The food is good however the special of the day (goat trio) was surprising tender and the flavor was light which with the accompanying salad was tasty. The dessert menu is lacking. The ambience (dimly lit, cozy tables, cute decor) makes ML a good pick for dates or to catch up with a buddy. The bar gets lively and loud so request a seat away from the bar area if you wish to have a quiet conversation. The waiters are very friendly and inviting but it's difficult to get their attention once the place fills up. It's the kind of place to try once."

  • "I travel 2 hours to get to Monument Lane for lunch. I call it my 'local' because it has a warm, friendly, down-to-earth vibe that makes me feel I'm at home. The food is farm-to-table, excellent quality and the service is superb. The restaurant has a country feel to it. In a city like NYC, it's an oasis. I love the fact that it is quiet, uncluttered and unpretentious. Monument Lane is about great food, warm, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a calm, leisurely place to dine. Food allergies are accommodated. It's my 'go-to restaurant when I come into NY."

  • "We were late for our reservation and the host was very kind. The waiter on the other hand did not want to discuss or suggest anything on the menu. I had the french toast. Delicious. My friend had the soup- huge portion and she loved it. Nice crowd, good bloody Mary's, mediocre wine list from Long Iskand, tables really tight. Overall okay for once in a while. "

  • "This place shows only the potential to be a very inviting Village spot, because it looks charming and cozy and the menu is interesting, but it turns out to be harsh and slick by choice and not what it appears. The service is smooth, the waiters smile aggressively, but it doesn't matter; the hoppin' Midtown-type noise level shreds the ambience and conversation, and the food is only fair given what they charge. I had an undercooked Cornish hen. The Village has better to offer if you want to enjoy a dinner with friends or a romantic date. To the four of us who had converged there, Monument Lane hits too many wrong notes. "

  • "We were seated promptly for our 5:30 PM reservation. There were only a few only dinners however it took about 15 minutes before our waitress appeared. We inquired about specials and was advised that she was leaving from working the lunch shift and would have to check on what the Specials were. The restaurant is small and we could clearly see what our waitress was doing which wasn't checking on the Specials. After another 15 minutes passed we called her over to inquire once again about the Specials. In about 10 minutes she finally returned with the Specials. Service at this restaurant was extremely slow. We order ice cream for dessert and this took forever. I'm afraid to know what the wait time is when the restaurant is full."

  • "Had a lovely brunch on Mother's day with the family. The brunch menu was really unique and interesting, with some interesting cocktails. While the food was about an 8, I'd say the ambiance was a 10. Loved the open, airy feeling with rustic furniture and old-world charm. "

  • "my wife and i have been going here fpr years and the last three times the service has been horrendous (30 mins to get a drink; 40 mins to be served apps). we used to go for their fried chicken but they've seemed to have adopted the rustic, laid back vibe of the country a little too much now... "

  • "This is my hands-down favorite small restaurant in NYC right now. It's great alone (at the bar or the communal table) as well as for a small group. There is a fascinating map of old NY that shows Monument Lane (aka Greenwich Ave - hence the name). "

  • "My son and I were able to talk easily over lunch, even after the restaurant became half full as our meal was winding down. The food and service were both very good, the prices are very reasonable, and the draft beer they had on special offer was a bargain and delicious. I definitely will be back soon and will try a dessert next time. "

  • "I went here since it's in my neighborhood and the place always seems to be packed. While I love the ambiance, everything else seemed to be a little off. I asked for a cocktail that wasn't very sweet, but was recommended something that ended up having way too much sugar. Also, all the entrees were oversalted. I was dehydrated for the entire weekend. If they could fix a few things things in the kitchen, I think I would be a more frequent diner here."
