A word from Monument Lane
Monument Lane is a New American restaurant in the West Village that focuses on farm-to-table cuisine. They use seasonal and sustainable products from local farmers and growers have been awarded Slow Food NYC's Snail of Approval for their standards. The menu changes weekly, if not daily, reflecting the restaurant's commitment to showcasing the local harvest.

Established in 2011 Monument Lane takes its inspiration from the area's pastoral past; a time when Manhattan island was rich with salt marshes and grasslands, pure estuaries teamed with mussels and oysters, and acres of apple and cherry orchards bloomed nearby. In the 1700's and 1800's, New Yorkers came to Greenwich Village as a retreat to the countryside; traveling a road named Monument Lane, now called Greenwich Avenue, where the restaurant presently sits.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great find for brunch. The food was delicious, although the boys did complain that the portions were a little small."

  • "went on the later side for dinner - had a delightful meal. menu is seasonal - including the cocktails (all very good) - good wines by the glass and beer menu too. staff is friendly and professional. decor is rustic cozy. definately worth a trip back"

  • "I went here since it's in my neighborhood and the place always seems to be packed. While I love the ambiance, everything else seemed to be a little off. I asked for a cocktail that wasn't very sweet, but was recommended something that ended up having way too much sugar. Also, all the entrees were oversalted. I was dehydrated for the entire weekend. If they could fix a few things things in the kitchen, I think I would be a more frequent diner here."

  • "There's just too many good options nearby for this place to just be OK...unfortunately, that's all it is, OK."

  • "Close to the 1/9 train stop at 14th, this was a good place to meet up for a client lunch. The interior felt like French country style (Although I'm not sure that's how it's officially described) and the salad with scallops was great. Lots of greens, wonderful dressing, and the freshest scallops. The coffee - black - was great - French press. The only difficulty we had was getting the attention of our waiter when we needed our check. Which is, of course, easily remedied. I recommend Monument Lane!"

  • "Limited menu but some dishes were great. Cocktails were better than the wine selection."

  • "Met a former business colleague here for a catch up lunch. Nice menu, attentive staff, good food, reasonable prices and good portions. Tables are very close so not very private. Restaurant was only 50% full, so after we asked to have the background sound turned down it was easy to converse. Can imagine it gets rather noisy as it gets closer to capacity."

  • "They have a small menu for brunch and they ran out of chicken and waffles. Really? The back up eggs Benedict didn't quite do it for me and the service was a little clumsy. However, I would give it another chance"

  • "the decor provides you the feeling of escaping to a restaurant in a country inn. The menu provides tastey and broad choices; the servers are wonderfully warm and attentive. i have already made my next reservation."

  • "This place was the complete package: location, service and menu. Attentive staff and solid dishes which were neither greasy nor lacking of flavor. A definite return."

  • "Monument Lane is a little gem in the village. The food is very creative and fresh and with a little bit of a gamey side. Lots of creative dishes to explore. The fried chick peas or the beet appetizer's are outstanding, and my chicken was perfect."

  • "Darling little venue. Empty at 6:30 but packed by 8. Super-friendly, almost too-attentive waitstaff. Starters: Chickpea amuse bouche (very refreshing), Brussels sprouts (well-balanced with picked pears), mushroom dip (v. earthy), and hake croquettes (good, not amazing). Drinks: All perfect. Ordered One More Day (surprisingly spicy with scotch depth), Youth on Fire (bright and just sweet enough, refreshing) and William Tell (sweet and moving). Entrees: Grilled chicken (AMAZING crispy skin + juicy meat), braised oxtail (not the gnocchi; very filling for a small plate, hints of shredded green and shredded meat, chewy and savory, amazing), short rib (super tender, more sweet than savory, but still great). Plates here tad light on veggies."

  • "I would definitely come back because the service and ambience was great. The only knock on the restaurant was that every dish was under seasoned."

  • "We had a nice dinner, although I liked it more than my husband. The place is very nicely decorated. But definetely far too expensive for what we had. Manhattan has many great places with more reasonable prices"

  • "I booked this restaurant at the last minute because I needed a place that was convenient for multiple people. What a luck! Wonderful service, good food - everyone was happy with their meal - and a pleasant ambiance. I would highly recommend this place for a nice dinner out - it isn't fancy, just very thoughtfully arranged."

  • "We loved the Farm Egg Scramble and the Brioche French Toast. The Mushroom Frittata was underwhelming but had a nice flavor. The Bread Basket was worth it too. Lovely staff and great place to chat and catch up. Bloody Mary was solid but the cauliflower topping gave it a weird odor every time I leaned into drink - should be left off."

  • "The restaurant went out of its way to show is great service for this birthday dinner. The staff crafted a special experience starting with printed "happy birthday Max" menus for the table and a complimentary birthday drink. They let me put balloons up and served us the delicious cake I had brought, always with a smile. The food was fantastic as was the wine menu (I'm picky - this was GOOD). Overall, great food, great service and a very cool little nook of a restaurant. I highly recommend it."

  • "Always enjoy the wholesome creative food with excellent presentation and attentive friendly service. Many visits and this one sharing with out of country friends. They enjoyed the evening very much."

  • "The hostess was quite rude, the tables were all empty (literally, empty) and she made us wait at the bar until our third person arrived - even though there was only one open seat at the bar. The waiter was very nice and attentive, but the food was seriously disappointing."

  • "We enjoyed our food and the service was great but we found it a little on the expensive side for what we had unfortunately. Our food was lovely - we finished it fully and enjoyed it but it was on the expensive side so we wouldn't rush back unless we were feeling fairly flamboyant!! We would go back and would enjoy it more probably as the costs wouldn't be a surprise 2nd time around!"

  • "On Monday's if you sit at the bar or communal table you're able to order the top secret burger (off menu) for $15. This includes a local beer or wine and a side. This burger is top top top. Everything but the bun is made in house. Just delicious!!"

  • "I needed a good place to bring my in-laws for a Christmas Eve dinner while we all were in NYC. I didn't want it to be too posh or uppity. It's more like casual / comfort food done upscale. Favorite dishes/bites of the table: Half chicken, lamb special, gnocchi, fried chickpeas, sweet potato mash, and OF COURSE the rosemary french fries."

  • "I've been to Monument Lane many times and in all seasons. It is a joy in the spring and summer when you can sit outside in a small sidewalk cafe, and in the summer when they have their twice-weekly smoke-house barbecue. In the cold winter months the warmth inside and the friendly atmosphere is welcoming and comforting. The food is excellent - creatively developed dishes from local sources, including 100% Grass-fed beef, local organic produce, and excellent beer and cider. There are portion sizes from bites (smallest plates) to Small Plates (larger than bites - good for sharing) and main dishes (portioned beautifully as well and suitable for sharing). Enjoy it for sharing or solo dining."

  • "Good wine selection. Pork schnitzel is quite good as are the oysters. Overall a bit pricey but the sparkling water is complementary and ambience is great."

  • "We have the good fortune to only live two blocks away from Monument Lane. We have been numerous times for brunch and have been very pleasantly surprised every time. The meal and service are always fantastic. The restaurant has a mildly rustic look, with great wooden beams but it is not country in any way. It is homey and comfortable. The food is always delicious. They take somewhat traditional food and put a modern spin on it. Not so much so that it is unrecognizable but it keeps the familiarity that you love and makes it even more delicious. We truly love it and it is one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "Food was good but not memorable. Martini was the smallest possible. No major brands, no cocktail onions. Why? Beer was warm. British style but Americans like beer cold. Service was friendly but slow. Bartender was in attentive but pleasant when he finally got around to serving us."

  • "I live a few blocks from Monument Lane and simply love this restaurant. The food is great (the fried chickpeas are to die for), the environment is relaxed and casual, and the cocktail list is imaginative and varied. A great place to meet friends and actually have a chance to talk and be heard. Very friendly and attentive wait staff who never rush you and let you enjoy your meal. All in all, one of my favorites."

  • "We had been there before: Dined and enjoyed the atmosphere, the pleasant and honest service, the delicious and inventive cuisine. Coming back we were greeted by robots that seated and served us like in school canteen. Bits were, at $5 overpriced mouth fulls. Main courses, a Schnitzel arrived and tasted boring and tasteless. And what happened to the question whether you would like a dessert instead of throwing the menus back at you..? All in all disappointing and future visits suspended. So much for having a neighborhood gem that opened up last year being cozy, true and serving delicious food."

  • "Presentation and taste of food was excellent. Ambience excellent. Nice control of noise-makers (music etc). Interesting and some unusual wince choices. One service portion undercooked. rest just fine, especially the small plates and appetizers. But all of us about 2 hours later had our tongues to the roof of our mouths. WAAAY too much salt."

  • "Our dinner was lovely and I will definitely go back. The food was interesting and good. However, it somehow just missed the mark for being a true foodie restaurant. The dishes just didn't have that extra, unique flavor to them. Additionaly the two tops are very crowded. Once you are seated you can't out without alot of commotion. Our waitress was very sweet and on top of everything. The room, although cramped, is pretty and has a good vibe. Good beer and wine selection."

  • "There are many superlatives to describe Monument Lane, but the most sufficient is to say that it simply is my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood, if not NYC. Living in the Village allows me access to some of the best dining experiences in one of the best dining cities in the world, and I've been supporting ML since their opening day because the food is always the pinnacle of fresh and executed with finesse and restraint. I keep coming back because the service is friendly, personal, and feels like you're at a friend's house. The staff is attentive without being hovering; they are always able to make educated suggestions and recommendations. It's my favorite place to take visitors; just so warm and yummy. (And the food's not bad either!)"

  • "horrendous horrendous and in fact, so bad it is almost funny. worse it was a bday celebration!! we sat for 90 mins waiting for an entree. waiter took our wine order and never returned. we waited 15 minutes. no wine. no food order taken. manager took over and things got worse. we walked in at 745 and at 915, sans an entree, were famished and asked for a check. we were "fed" up. then we discovered we were being billed for food that never made it to our table! we pointed that out and then, when we were given the redone bill, they forgot to include a pen for us to sign the receipt! i was embarrassed for them. truly they were shameless!"

  • "This was our second visit for dinner and we enjoyed it at least as much as the first visit. The place has a nice vibe but the key really is the food which is very well prepared and with some clever, innovative twists. Service can be a bit sloppy but doesn't really get in the way of a very good dinner experience"
