Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Monty's Steakhouse on a number of occasions. The food is good (a bit pricey but overall tasty) but the service is erratic at best. We have actually received better service from our bus staff than our waiter who seemed overextended trying to take care of too many tables. This has happened each time we have been there. For the prices they charge, the expectation should be good food AND good service. You should not have to choose."

  • "We had great service throughout dinner. It was a special birthday dinner for my Mom, so the extra care on her dessert plate was a nice touch. Living downtown DC and all the high-end restaurants there, we thought the food was very good but the prices a little high - although they did include your side choices. Wines reasonably priced. Only criticism was the length of time to receive check. Food was tasty and perfectly prepared."

  • "I found this restaurant in the Washingtonian as an alternative to Rays the Steaks. It was my girlfriend's birthday and I wanted something nice. First, the service was great. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and made to feel welcome. Our glasses were always full and the food was at our table quickly. The waiter was very patient and knowledgeable about the menu and provided great suggestions. Second, the layout. The tables are spaced far enough apart that you feel comfortable, not crowded. Third, the food was amazing. One of the specials was a mixed grill. The lamb was incredible. Fourth, the prices were reasonable. Neither cheep nor expensive. No need to go to Rays again. Highly recommend!"

  • "We had another excellent meal here. Every visit is wonderful. The food is great, the selections are mouthwatering and the service is exceptional -- all without having to drive into the District or Alexandria."

  • "I was excited to try this local spot, and was hoping it would be a new go-to for splurge dinners. But unfortunately it won't be. The biggest negatives were that my husband's double-cut filet came with a brown-gravy-like sauce, which was a disappointment. A good filet only really needs to be properly seasoned with salt and pepper, though I wouldn't object to other spices or a compound butter. But brown gravy? The desserts were also disappointing. They probably have too many options and need to focus on doing fewer desserts really well. Last gripe: WAY too expensive. We'll have to continue going elsewhere for consistently good steak (hold the gravy) for two-thirds the cost. Service was great, but food was only fair, hence my rating."

  • "The lobster bisque was good, with the right warmth of spices and a good amount of meat. The wedge salad was nicely presented, but the dressing was a little too thin and was sparely poured on. The aged beef was excellent. A pricey alternative, but worth the occasional evening out."

  • "Visited Monty's with a friend and our two 12 year old daughters after their Spring Cotillion dance which was right down the street at the Country Club. Wanted to treat our "dates" to a nice restaurant and we were not disappointed. The service was great. Very friendly and informative. We had the calamari to start and it was delicious. Prepared perfectly with two sauces for dipping. Dinner was also excellent as we all had steaks. The girls enjoyed their first Filet Mignon that was cooked perfectly. I had the ribeye which was fantastic and my friend had the NY Strip which he said was also delicious. Overall, the experience was great and we will certainly return again."

  • "This is the second time I have had lunch at Monty's, and the second terrific meal and service. I tried the Ahi Tuna Tartar, which was perfectly portioned for my lunch, especially when it is combined with a cup of the wonderful corn and crab chowder."

  • "I think Monty's keeps improving. I've been going since it opened and lately I've had more hits than misses so I'm glad. Our waiter was great and it's nice to have a place to eat besides Mikes out here in Springfield. My friend and I had steak and it was delicious. The sides were perfect and I like the sauces you can add especially the horseradish!"

  • "We're open to trying new places, even if they are out of place, like a steakhouse in a suburban strip mall. However, It still had that strip mall feeling inside...even though they tried with the decor, it needed to be darker and richer to evoke a steakhouse feel. I'd like to think we caught them on an off night, but ultimately, we were disappointed. The one thing they should have been stellar with was the steak...and we had to send ours back! We ordered a medium rare porterhouse to share, and it came to us quite overdone. It was also pretty thin and scraggly looking, and had a sauce on it (not as described) ... Perhaps to cover the fact that it was overcooked. The meat was even a little grisly ...definitely not steakhouse quality."

  • "This little gem of a restaurant, located in the suburbs of Springfield, gives the great big city steakhouses a run for their money. Here is why: The Top notch mixed drinks. Reasonably priced beer. A 5 star wine and spirits list. Outstanding service. In-house made everything. (Seriously, even the sour cream and butter was made in house. The complementary banana bread is grandma rivaling awesome) Classy but not pretentious decor. (The old school turn of the century filament happy light bulbs were a nice touch.) Outdoor heated area for tobacco consumers. The steaks were cooked perfectly. (wife ordered a rib-eye, I ordered the porterhouse). So perfectly in fact I had to shake the chef's hand. Yes, they were THAT good."

  • "First time here. Excited there's a new place to try in our area. Reservation system easy. Food was good, presentation very good! Service however was average. As they got busier, the service got worse. Many things were forgotten or just wrong. The waiter did seem to try, but he was not ready for prime time. I recommend you try any night but Saturday."

  • "Monty's is the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. Their food is outstanding. Fresh, hot, delicious. I can't say enough good things about them. Our waiter was the best on the planet, even though I don't know his name. My g/f and I ate there on New Year's Eve, and he remembered us. The Chilean Sea Bass is to die for! The corn/crab chowder soup is equally fantastic. This is the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. A little on the pricey side but sooo well worth it. Love this place! If you are ever in the Springfield, VA area, you have to eat here. The best!!"

  • "The was my first visit to Monty's. The beef portions are huge. The prime rib special was delicious and easily enough for two meals, however I would not recommend the salmon. I guess soggy is the best description. I will probably go back but I'll try the steak...after all it is a steakhouse."

  • "This was our first visit to Monty's and we were delighted with the experience. Monty's is more than a steakhouse. Yes, do get the steak meals, but be sure to try the prawn portobello mushroom appetizer. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive. The pacing of meal presentation allows the diner to enjoy each morsel without feeling neither rushed nor forgotten. We plan to go again."

  • "There was a glitch with my Open Tables reservation. The restaurant had a different time (almost 2 hours later) than I had reserved, which was confirmed in an email from Open Tables. They were apparently booked until then. However, as we were ready to walk out of the restaurant, a table became available. We were very happy, since my steak at this restaurant was one of the best I've ever had. Two of us ordered the Bone-in Filet, another one had the Petite Filet, and I had the New York Strip. The portions were generous. Three of our steaks were grilled as ordered, but one of the Bone-In Filet was a little under cooked. My spinach side was a little over salted. The desserts, house made, were outstanding!"

  • "This was our second visit,. The first visit was wonderful. Unfortunately, on the night we chose to celebrate a family member birthday on March 1st, a group of 12-15 persons grew quite loud and disrespectful of other customers. As they slowly made their way to the exit, they stopped; hovering over our table in an inebriated fashion as if we were not there. We understand that the restaurant is a place to celebrate, hence our visit, however, when other parties assume the establishment has been reserved for their private party, other customer's feel very unwelcome and wish only to leave as soon as possible. The chair offered to my date was wet, and I felt as though I offended staff by asking for a dry chair."

  • "I'll be frank... I wasn't sure about this place, but I'm glad I took a chance. Great Filet Mignon. Cooked to order precisely. I had the 8oz medium, which was perfectly cooked, and I accompanied it with Chateau Bronseau from Bordeaux Superior. 100% Merlot with great fruit forward, black current, leather, and tobacco accents. It paired well with the steak. Afterward we delve into a homemade tiramisu, which was terrific. Our fauxhawk-accented waiter was very knowledgeable and obviously knew what he was doing. The owner was also attentive, and took the time to visit with us a couple of times. I would recommend this to my friends, and we will be back."

  • "We were seated promptly to meet our party for a nice dinner with friends and was greeted by our waiter soon after. Each of us ordered a different signature steak and they were cooked to perfection. Make sure to order the sauces as they provide it in a small dish to try with your steak. The sides were a bit on the small side as I was expecting a few more spears of asparagus, but again I am dining there to eat steak! If you are up for a unique desert, try the chocolate habanero cake with vanilla ice cream. Great place to have in Springfield! I hope this is a start of new local upscale restaurants to this part of town."

  • "Great experience for our first time at Monty's. Raw oysters for appetizer were awesome! Big and flavorful! Single cut filet was perfectly cooked, petite filets were good but single cut was better. We both had sides of spinach (tasty), twice baked potato was good, and broiled beefsteak tomato was delicious! Caesar salad was good too. Soup was missing the chunks of lobster advertised. Definitely will be back for the filet, oysters and tomato though. Service by Zach was outstanding. Seen lots of reviews for poor service, but that was definitely not our experience. Prices were on the high side, but expected for what we got and on par with other restaurants like this. What a nice find for a fancy restaurant in Springfield!"

  • "Dinner on a quite Sunday evening proved to be less than exciting - especially considering the prices. My husband started with a cup of onion soup - luke warm, but tasty. My lobster and corn chowder special tasted like cafeteria soup and I'm sincerely doubting what I was eating was lobster. Main courses of 8 oz. filet was fine. My husband's NY strip was sent back because he specifically requested no veal demi glace on it, and of course, there it was. Side order of Brussel sprouts were raw. Couldn't cut them even if I could have catched them as they rolled around the plate. So back they went too. The bill was $80.00 (without wine) and no accommodation whatsoever was offered for such a bad experience."

  • "Dinner at Monty's was a delight. The food was exceptional. Our server was great. After dinner, we went to the bar to have a glass of wine. Much different there-we didn't find the bar staff to be friendly, knowledgeable or helpful. It was quite a surprise after such a nice dinner. However, everything else was so great, we didn't let it take away from the lovely evening."

  • "If you like good steaks prepared well, you may like this restaurant. But be prepared to shell out a good bit of cash for the priveledge and check your bill before you pay. Monty's situated in a suburban strip mall served a pretty good filet and good shrimp coctail but faltered on service. With the place nearly empty due to a pending major snow storm service was strangely slow. We ordered sparkling water and later the owner came buy and filled my half full glass with tap water. She gave me another sparkling water but it showed up on the bill. The wine list was good but the price on the bill was $2 more than the list price. At $55 a person (less wine), this is a steep price for pretty good food and stylish but bare ambiance."

  • "My husband and I decided to try Monty's for our Valentines Day dinner. We had a reservation and were shown to our table immediately. The table was on the small side and very close to another couple. I asked to be reseated and it was no problem. Our host recognized right away the location was not to our satisfaction and it was remedied immediately. Our server Zack was attentive and professional. Our meals were outstanding. The wine list is excellent as well. We will be back again...and again!"

  • "The experience was fine but much of the food felt like it was missing something. High quality steakhouse prices without the high quality taste."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "It was Valentine's day, so they were probably over booked. but we had an early reservation. Service started very good, but as more people came in the service quickly went down hill and our dinner suffered for it. Our waiter did her best but she was clearly frustrated and it showed. It was like they had no idea a big crowd would be showing up. Also, it is hard to experience much ambience when the tables are on top of one another and conversations are overheard. Food is good, no problem with the prices,if they can hire one or two more experienced waiters/staff they can move people in and out a little more timely. They need to get a bit more organized, they have been open for a few years now."

  • "The filet mignon was great but the NY strip was a gristly, tought cut.We think the carrots & spinach are the best of the veggies & they were good. Our valentine special appetizers were delicious. But the service continues to lack. The waiter didn't bring bread until we grabbed someone on the run & asked. Then we got a partial basket til we caught our waiter flying by & asked for banana bread. It's a pattern. If we needed something, like the wine requested with dinner, we had to catch the waiter as he was rushing by. He never stopped to check with us. This is standard for Monty's at dinner so we didn't stay for dessert. The owner/hostess bused the tables. I've said before Monty's needs more staff &/or training. They aren't listening."

  • "We had high hopes for this to be our new local find but the service was beyond terrible and while the steak was delicious, the rest of the food (bread, apps, sides) left a lot to be desired. The waiter came to take our drink order and was back five mins later to ask what two wines we had wanted. The entrees arrived and we had to ask for silverware. The gentleman comes back with steak knives and no forks. The manager comes over to ask if we are okay and is oblivious to the fact that both of our wine glasses and both of our water glasses are completely empty. We'll spend the extra time going to Ruth's Chris or Walker's Grille next time we want a good steak."

  • "We dined early on a Saturday evening and by the time we left the place was filled. My appetizer of smoked salmon was delicious and large. More importantly my steak was cooked exactly the way I asked and was tender and delicious. Service was attentive and friendly, but I would suggest a tutorial on how to open a bottle of champagne as the waiter really struggled with it."

  • "I had the 12oz Filet Mignon and it was the perfect steak. My dinner came with 2 sides, I chose the spinach and beefsteak tomatoes and it was absolutely delicious. My girlfriend had the Rockfish and that was well prepared also. I would definitely dine there again. The owner was very courteous and came to our table to ask us if we enjoyed our dining experience which I thought was super thoughtful and caring. A great place to eat, delicious steaks and wine! Highly recommended for any occasion. 5 Stars."

  • "Our steaks were outstanding, cooked to perfection. I ordered the clam chowder which was perfect. Service was well-timed and friendly. The wine aficionado in our group was disappointed in the Argentine Malbec wine, but I could not tell that it was inferior. We did not have room for dessert. I have been to Monty's a number of times and it is consistently good."
