  • "The food was amazing! And portions were such that you could have appetizers, entree, and desert! The ambiance was great! I added it as romantic because of that, but it might be a touch loud if you're looking for a truly quiet romantic meal. I felt that the energy of the place really lent itself to something that could still be very romantic if you were ok with it turned up just a little. Service was great. At the very end of the meal the server was a little slow bringing the check and closing it out, but other than that he was amazingly attentive through the whole meal despite the busy evening. I did see a large group there of 10 and more and as well as a couple smaller groups, so they appear to be pretty accommodating for groups."

  • "Had one of my overall favorite dishes for the first time. The pork chop with pineapple and Stilton was phenomenol. The pesto steak is always a favorite. We mixed it up a little on dessert and tried the white chocolate bread pudding. Since neither of us are big white chocolate fans we were skeptical, but our servers advice was spot on. Moist, light and a cross in flavor between a sugar cookie and crema brûlée, we enjoyed every bite. The chocolate ganache mini bite dessert is a small yet perfect ending to a wonderful dining experience as well. Highly recommend you try Montrio."

  • "It was my birthday, and the server had no idea? Yet I' m on the email, for years? It was on the reservation? no big deal, but I had to ask for the birthday dessert? A bit embarrassing! The waiter was a bit on the snobby side, his name was Jose, seemed like he wanted me to order something more expensive, he offered a glass of wine for $ 22? Really? he asked me 3 times, if I wanted my steak med rare of course? I said, no I'm a okie I want it med well? My wife ordered French onion soup, no cheese? just a lot of onions floating around a piece of bread? the calamari, was great, the bread was great, my pesto rubbed steak was the best, we will come back, like we do every 4 months thks"

  • "Friendly staff, not just your waiter. Ryan was helpful when it came to substitution on entrees. Made sure of how I wanted my meat done... It was perfect! When he was busy other staff would be sure our water was full.... Sounds like a small thing but if you have been out in the sun all day its an important detail! Dessert was very tasty and just as advertised. My only reason for four stars was just for the noise.... Won't bother most people.... Still go repeatedly because of the food. If you go you will enjoy your meal!"

  • "A lovely piece of swordfish came drowning in a sauce that was overwhelmingly dill-forward. It was accompanied by zucchini that were barely grilled and soggy due to the sauce. The vegetable skillet included a range of root vegetables and some broccoli rabe—why in summer rely on root vegetables amidst the bounty of the region? As is almost always the case when attempting to roast different vegetables all at once, some were underdone, some overdone, and a few just right. The vegetable dish was garnished with bland fried cubes of polenta and was accompanied, incongruously, by a small pitcher of tomato sauce. A well-spiced and well-cooked roasted vegetable can be a thing of beauty, but not here."

  • "My second visit in the past 12 months; this time with my kids (11/16) who are adventurous diner, willing to try most anything. The reception by the hostess and waitress gave the impression that this was not a place for kids, as kids only want fast food, and certainly don't appreciate this type of food. My kids commented on that first. After a while, our waitress warmed up. On my first visit, with my girlfriend, our waiter was surly and dismissive. The busboy was awesome, and made the evening enjoyable. The reason I went back was because of the busser, and that I assumed the "attitude" had certainly been let go by this time. I think an attitude adjustment is in order for the wait staff. Don't judge!"

I had scallops which were prepared ok, but for the price I would have liked more than three moderate size scallops...she had the NY steak and it was average at best ... Will not return"

  • "The only reason we decided to stay at the next door Marriott was so we could walk here for dinner 😀. Had not been here for years and my memory served me well, great dinner! All 4 of us agreed it was our best meal out in a long time. Excellent service, the manager came and checked on us too. Good wine by the glass list. Prices reasonable."

  • "You must have these truffle tater tots.....delicious!!!!! All the appetizers were delicious and the hot bread they bring you is wonderful. My sister had the Kobe burger and it was delicious and had the pork chop. My pork chop was a little overcooked and I wasn't quite sold on the Stilton and pineapple. I love these things individually but all together they lost everything wonderful about them. The savory bread pudding was a little "wet" for my taste but the actual flavor was pretty good just too soggy. Our waiter seemed a little overwhelmed. The restaurant was busy but he was slow compared to the other waitstaff that we saw around us. Good food. Good atmosphere. Would come back for sure."

  • "Energetic in opentable speak means having to shout to your dining companions and not really hearing what the server was saying about the way too many specials. The food was hit and miss, all the protein was cooked very well but the sides were not. Hockey puck cornbread stuffing with the perfectly cooked duck breast was a disappointment. Soggy apple bread pudding with pork chop, ditto. Winner of the night was the awesome, cooked-to-order Kobi burger with truffle fries, juicy, tasty triple cream truffle cheese melting into the bun and burger, yum!"

The hostess was perfectly attending our reservation and surprised us with adding special touches to our table for two to set the mood for a romantic evening. Our waiter, Ryan, was charming and attentive the entire evening. He didn't hover but always appeared present at the right moments. The food was fresh, delicious, and delightful. I highly recommend Montrio Bistro to anyone in Monterey. No tourist here. Just a local high-end dining affair."

The only very minor negative was that it was a little cramped and noisy...but it reminded me of the bistros' you would find in New York or San Francisco...I would recommend this to my friends.."

  • "Dined here with the man today and had a wonderful dining experience. Started out with cocktails (recommend the Old Gringo) and the warm delicious complimentary bread. We followed with the truffle tater tots, which were very good, and the scallop crudo with avocado pana cota which was also tasty. My boyfriend ordered the steak, which was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. I ordered the lamb chop, which was also cooked to perfection, but a bit too tart with the vinegarette for my taste. It was a bit too overpowering. Wanted dessert, especially after seeing the bread pudding, but we were simply too full. Our waiter was superb! Very friendly, funny, and attentive. He was probably the best part about our dining experience."

  • "Montrio is sophisticated enough for a intimate dinner for two yet able to give crayons to my seven year old granddaughter to keep her occupied. The staff was attentive yet not over-bearing. The small plates are excellent. The bread is served hot out of the oven and save some to dredge in the mussel broth. (Excellent). The cold smoke salmon and scallops again are excellent. Prawns grilled with vinegar slaw very good. On Sunday there's half price wine on select bottles."

  • "Having eaten at this restaurant several times before I had high expectations for our dinner. Unfortunately it did not meet those during this last visit. Our table was small, crowded, and my seat faced only the salad station and the main cooking line. We started with two appetizers, both enjoyable but followed with a salad that was overdressed and almost inedible. We split a burger and it was cooked to our request and very nicely done. Service was sporadic and sometimes forgetful. Waited an extremely long time to have check dropped at the table and when it was returned with credit card to sign it was someone else's bill. It took another long period of time to have the problem fixed. I won't be dining here again."

  • "We go to Montrio fairly often. The cocktails are inspired. The steamed mussels appetizer is divine, and the white anchovies are not to be missed. We always love the food but often we are disappointed by the service. All the service people are very friendly and nice, but there's something wrong with the organization--perhaps too many tables per waiter. Everything takes just a little bit too long, and--as in even the nicest restaurants--things really deteriorate after the entree has been served. Coffee, dessert, the bill--very, very slow in coming. However, we keep going back. On our most recent visit, we were seated at about 6:10 and probably out of there by 8pm. It was quite busy for such an early hour. We shall try again, soon."

It was a lovely intimate corner table and there were tiny sparkling hearts on the table and the menu was fantastic and the food was really good and the dessert was on the house and the waiter (Jose L.) was outstanding!"

  • "This place is really fantastic. NOT near the water but in town not many tourists I am sure. My wife had the pork chop which she claimed was the very best ever. I am a vegitarian and they prepared a true gourmet vegitarian dish, and low in fat . No cheese or cream but prepared wonderfully. And.... The semmifrido was PERFECT ( better than my less than perfect spelling ."

  • "This was, hands down, the best part of my trip to Monterey. My best friend and I spent a solid part of the day walking around the wharf and Cannery Row and just wanted to find somewhere nice to eat that didn't consist of tourist-type foods on the boardwalk. Montrio Bistro is so lovely and the atmosphere was not pretentious at all. Best meal of our vacation. We are still talking about the mushroom and polenta small bite...and the arugula and burrata salad...and the mouth-watering pork chop. Hats off to the chef, I was so happy to find this gem!"

  • "This is such a good restaurant. Whenever we visit Monterey we make a point of having dinner here. This time around met our expectations. However, the (two) lamb chops on the plate -- at the top price on the menu -- while cooked to order was a skimpy portion in my view. At least three to a plate is the norm in most restaurants in my experience, or, the menu might say, "two" or "three" to tip off the consumer. (Won't stop us from returning; just might not order lamb chops.)"

  • "Just a really good overall experience all around, our waitress was really good and really busy, but did an excellent job of staying on top of all her tables. We were dining with our 3 daughters, the youngest a little inclined to things more plain (no sauce, not to many flavors), the waitress was ready to bend over backwards to accommodate her, but we found an appetizer to go along with her sharing with others. We had a couple of salads, mine was the "bacon and egg" that was a fun option with a great combination of tastes; kobe beef hamburgers were very good, a capellini & veggies also very good, but my New York off the specials - outrageous! Everything perfectly cooked and delicious; and the bread pudding is worth a trip back by itself"
