Diner Reviews
  • "We went to Montrio Bistro on our first (of two) nights in Monterey. I had the burger. This was not your usual burger! This one featured prosciutto, triple cream brie with truffles, arugula and then a little more truffle oil on top. OMG. It was THE PERFECT BURGER! Everything was so excellent, we returned the following night (Sunday). Our luck -- Sunday was half-price night for full bottles off the excellent wine list. Another tip: Try the Popcorn with Duck Confit. Sounds ridiculous, but it's not! A unique and clever combination."

  • "This is such a good restaurant. Whenever we visit Monterey we make a point of having dinner here. This time around met our expectations. However, the (two) lamb chops on the plate -- at the top price on the menu -- while cooked to order was a skimpy portion in my view. At least three to a plate is the norm in most restaurants in my experience, or, the menu might say, "two" or "three" to tip off the consumer. (Won't stop us from returning; just might not order lamb chops.)"

  • "Montrio Bistro is one of the most enjoyable restaurants we've ever been to. We were greeted by the owner, who is very enthusiastic (he and his GM actually pitch in and work with their staff.) The staff takes their lead from the owner and GM. Food is wonderful; the interior of this restored firehouse is very well done. This will be a regular stop on our visits to the Monterey Peninsula."

  • "This has some of the best food I've ever had -- appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts -- all of it is interesting, full of diverse tastes and textures, and just the right amount."

  • "Just a really good overall experience all around, our waitress was really good and really busy, but did an excellent job of staying on top of all her tables. We were dining with our 3 daughters, the youngest a little inclined to things more plain (no sauce, not to many flavors), the waitress was ready to bend over backwards to accommodate her, but we found an appetizer to go along with her sharing with others. We had a couple of salads, mine was the "bacon and egg" that was a fun option with a great combination of tastes; kobe beef hamburgers were very good, a capellini & veggies also very good, but my New York off the specials - outrageous! Everything perfectly cooked and delicious; and the bread pudding is worth a trip back by itself"

  • "Wonderful food - we are from out of town and have been back twice as the food is wonderful. We ordered a heap of the smaller dishes and shared between us so we could try as much as possible."

  • "We had a great dinner at Montrio. Love bistro food, lobster mac and cheese."

  • "Had a great meal for family of five. Waiter Ryan was very knowledgeable and set the perfect tone. Food all tasted wonderful (roasted artichoke! Roasted vegetables, chef special artichoke/spinach ravioli). Only wish we had room for dessert. We will be back. Thanks Montrio from the Harris family."

  • "A scan of local menus put this spot on our radar. It did not disappoint! The battered artichoke heart appetizer was a fantastic start. My wife had the shrimp and I had some of the best Gnocchi in a garlicy pesto sauce ever! The table service was noticably slow but we noticed them really working hard and always scurrying about so we didn't complain or have it impact the tip. Maybe they were short staffed. The staff were very friendly and the food was terrific."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants. The dinner and a movie is a fabulous deal! I would give 5 stars but the server we had, Ryan was horrible and irritating. I think when he knows you are a "dinner and a movie" table, he could care less. But we did spent almost $100 dollars and always do! He has no personality. Talks too low, walks too slow. Our drinks sat empty for a long time, as did the empty appetizer plates. The dinner was served at a decent amount of time, but again sat there after we were done, for way too long. The couple next to us almost left. The man was so upset that he was taking forever to come back and take their order, that we heard him tell his wife that if he is not here in 2 min. we are leaving! Should never happen."

  • "We had the chicken waffle for starters..AMAZING! My Sirloin was cooked to perfection and every mouthful of food was jammed with flavour! Service was great, atmosphere was nice too. We loved this place.. It is a shame we are from the UK and not Monterey :)"

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Montrio on our honeymoon. I had made reservations online and requested a quite, romantic place. They did that and more! The wait staff were very friendly, knowledgable and professional. The food was spectacular and brought to our table very quickly. All in all, a wonderful night. I would recommend Montrio over any of the overpriced places in Monterey."

  • "We were seated promptly by friendly staff at a table for two. We'd already reviewed the menu online, and had selected the Capalenni because it's one of our favorite pasta dishes, although we don't see it on many menus. Since I recently had surgery and could not enjoy a glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage, we settled for water to drink. Our server was very attentive, providing information about the bread-dipping vinaigrette and ordering a complementary "Happy Anniversary" (written in chocolate) dessert plate. She also happily took our picture to commemorate the occasion using our camera. Our complements to a well run establishment and to the chef for a delicious dinner."

  • "We were accommodated nicely with request for quietest table - service was very friendly, not rushed, but always available when needed. Food was well prepared - entire experience was a pleasure."

  • "Ok, I'll admit, I happened across this place on Yelp while searching for a nice place to dine on my honeymoon. I was not disappointed. My husband even loved it, and he is pickier than I am. I had the natural pork chop. It was thick, cooked thoroughly, and was very, VERY tender and juicy. And the leek and pepper bread pudding?? Delicious. Speaking of bread pudding! The white chocolate bread pudding was over the top (I had that first by the way). I don't know if my favorite part was that it was crispy on the top and soft inside or that it didn't have raisins or the passion fruit ice cream! My husband had the burger, and he said it was good. I couldn't stay away from his fries! We'll have to come back to Monterey again- JUST to eat here."

  • "When we went in, the hostesses were courteous and efficient and friendly. The food was excellent, the chef is a master. The other servers seemed to be kind and solicitous to the other patrons. However, our server...Ryan, was a train wreck. My service was appalling. He took forever to come to the table, he gave me a broken glass for the water I asked for that took 10 minutes to arrive. I tried on 4 occasions to get his attention to replace the glass, the break was in the middle of the glass, and it has leaked onto the table and floor down below the crack before he arrived to change it. Then, no apology, nothing. I would NEVER return, and would recommend, if the menu tempts you, go, but if they say Ryan is your server, ask to move."

  • "If you can only make it to one Monterey area restaurant, Montrio is the place. As a native Bay Area foodie, I was blown away by the amazing dishes, from the Thai style mussels to the soft shell crab to the real dry pat scallops (not those things that have been soaked in chemicals to retain moisture when freezing). Half price wine list on Sunday evening didn't hurt either :-)"

  • "We have been here so many times. It is our destination place for when we come to town. If you hadn't had dinner here you are missing out. Always so good."

  • "while the food and service were excellent, the noise level was too much... management needs to do something about the dizzying din...!"

  • "This is not a tourist trap. We are frequent dinners; meaning this is a mist whenever we are in Monterey. Great food, fresh and seasonal ingredients; never disappointed. However, here is a secret. If you are into a great manhattan ask the bartender for a 3 Kings--it's his speciality drink and you won't find it on the bar menu--it will not disappoint!"

  • "Montrio is always a good choice for dinner in Monterey. Food is consistently very good yet their pricing is reasonable. Attractively decorated, a bit noisy at times, but festive and friendly. Service is always super and menu items are creative and selection is good. I would not hesitate to recommend Montrio to friends of family."

  • "I went on a Wednesday night and had the NY Strip w/ a fig etc. reduction. Perfectly cooked, good quality meat & an unusual but delicious combination of food on my plate. My friend had the seafood / pasta special & liked it. Oatmeal creme brulé for dessert was really good. Lots of unique drink combinations to try. Highly recommend this place. Almost forgot...The service from the person that answered the phone all the way to the guys that cleared the table was very good. Our waitress was very good. I'll be back."

  • "We enjoyed the relaxed feel of this place – it was a comfortable dining room and NOT freezing cold, which is always appreciated. I would return to try more dishes. The mussels were amazing and the calamari was awesome. My MB fresh wild salmon was good although the accompanying sides were a little on the boring side, polenta was just fried and had no flavor so I did not eat it. My folks loved the NY steak. Service was well-timed and friendly, although not outstanding."

  • "Our server was very nice but lost interest in us right after we ordered our food. I ordered a second beer that didn't come until we were done eating and waiting for boxes for our left overs, which also took two requests and several minutes. I had the short rib which was good, but their claim that it's the best ever is a little over zealous."

  • "We eat at Montrio every time we're in Monterey because the food is always fabulous and this visit was no exception. I had a perfectly roasted duck breast with sour cherry reduction. Stunning! Our waiter, Jose, was attentive, knowledgeable and just excellent. He described his favorite dishes and recommended a perfect local Pinot noir to accompany the duck. Everything about our experience at Montrio was great. We'll be back."

  • "We needed a special place for a reunion with old friends, and we're delighted with our choice. The food was delicious, and the service was cheerful and attentive. One of our group was disabled, with a walker, and the staff took care to maximize her comfort. The room is beautiful, and reasonably quiet. Our dinner here was the highlight of our visit...well done!"

  • "The restaurant was an easy walk from our hotel. When you arrive you can see that it used to be an old fire station. The interior design is stunning. The wait staff is knowledgeable, friendly, but not intrusive. The atmosphere is not overly formal -- but it's not a noisy, raucous room at all. And now the food.... the menu had a lot of variety and lots of unique dishes. My husband had an Indian onion dish from the "small plates" selection that was fantastic. The Grilled Caesar -- also a wonderful choice. Everything we had was delicious, the portions were perfect, the service was excellent -- can't say enough good things. We will definitely return on our next trip up to Monterey."

  • "We had our anniversary there. We had the roasted artichoke, very tasty. We tried both their specials that night, New York steak and parpadelle pasta with prime steak. New York was good but the pasta was not. The service lacked tremendously which dulled the experience. "

  • "We wanted a 'foodie' dinner, above ordinary, but where we could take our (well-behaved) kids (9 and 12 yrs). This was perfect! In "bistro" style, the tables were covered in large sheets of paper, with crayons on each table. This was supposed to be a cute addition for adults, but kept the kids well entertained. The seasonal asparagus dish was good, perhaps not quite excellent. The anchovy appetizer was beyond excellent. I am *not* an anchovy fan, but after I tasted one, I had a second. The kids said the fancy tator tots were 'best ever.' Grilled caesar salad was excellent. Spouse and one son loved the duck. I had an excellent mahi-mahi with seasonal cherries. Ambiance was fun (clouds? from ceiling), copper details on pillar, etc."

  • "Located where you would expect only tourist fare Montrio always satisfies. I've returned over half a dozen times and find interesting specials and accommodating help. Get reservation for weekends but they're flexible weekdays. A go to place with a decent wine list and moderate prices in Monterey. "
