Family owned and operated for over 54 years, Monti’s offers gracious hospitality and great food at reasonable prices. Built in 1871, Monti’s La Casa Vieja (“The Old House”) has a unique western atmosphere. Originally Tempe’s founding pioneer home, Monti’s has been carefully
restored to reveal foot thick adobe walls, river rock in the floors and
even a fountain in one of the many large dining rooms. Guests can dine
in the very room where Sen. Carl Hayden, “The most important person in Arizona history”, was born in 1877. Known for our steaks but even more known for our freshly baked roman bread – it will keep you coming back for more. Monti’s is just a few short steps from the METRO Light Rail stop in downtown Tempe.

  • "We could not have asked for a better evening to catch up with friends from out of town. The location offered rich history and charm. There were many appealing menu selections to choose from . . . although we all ended up ordering the Monday night Prime Rib special. None of us were disappointed!! We particularly appreciated the quiet atmosphere and sense of privacy offered as we enjoyed dinner. This allowed comfortable conversation. Our server was very attentive without being overbearing. It was a quiet evening in the restaurant and there was no sense of urgency for us to leave . . . so we didn't. We will return often!!"

  • "We took family that were visiting to Monti's and everything was very good. Service, food, everything. We have been to Monti's before a few times and have loved it! Our son especially loved the filet. My husband and daughter-in-law had the prime rib and said it was excellent as well. I had the flat iron steak meal and thought it was good but have had it on their Tuesday night special before and said it was the best steak I'd ever had. They prepare it differently on Tuesdays.That is what has brought us back to Monti's several times. I definitely would recommend anyone try this place! It's a keeper!"

  • "We were in Tempe for one night, everyone wanted something good but different, in a decent place not too noisy we could walk to on Mill Avenue - Monti's fit the bill. Steaks were very good but many better in the Valley. Salmon okay, Overpriced for what you get. Big restaurant, chopped up into various rooms - slow to seat despite reservation and not very busy - lots of empty tables."

  • "I've been going to Monti's since I was a kid in the 60s. Great steaks, the Roman bread is a tradition, and the Roquefort dressing...well, I'd go just for that! And the atmosphere in the Mill room with the big booths is fantastic. The only disappointment is that one of the things that made Monti's so amazing was the prices - its the reason my family went so often - at least once per month. But they've now price positioned themselves with the more elite steak venues, and we just can't afford to take the family there as often. Too bad, because its one of my favorite restaurants of all time."

  • "The food was great. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. The asparagus was also very nice. The restaurant is in an old historic building which should come off as charming; however, the dingy, shabby, dirty looking carpet was a major distraction. It was hard to enjoy the delicious food and wonderful service because of the creepy carpeting. If you go, don't look down."

  • "We made reservations for my husband's birthday and had high expectations for Monti's. Our expectations were not met. When we arrived, the hostesses seemed annoyed that we had made a reservation, and we had to wait over 5 minutes before someone yelled out our name several times, like we were cattle, to bring us to our table. The appetizer of chips with salsa and guac was pricey ($8) but fresh and tasty. The steak was low quality meat and my husband's ribeye was extremely thin and was entirely fat and grissle - no edible pieces were present. We did not order dessert or alcoholic beverages and our tab was well over $80. For that price, I could have had a fantastic meal at Firebird's or Fleming's."

  • "The place was great, old charm, however our sirloin steak was not up to par. A little tough, good flavor but hard to cut. I am hoping this was just a bad one but we could not really complain as we did not see our waitress again for a very long time and the rest of the table would have been almost done eating by the time I got a new one so ate some,. I hope this is a one time thing. Would maybe try the restaurant again at a later date. Everyone else at our table was OK with their meals, although would have thought for the price it was not spectacular."

  • "The food and service is very good but the seating assignments were extremely poor. Our party (who have visited this establishment for 10 years during spring training) of five gentlemen, of whom some are rather large in stature, were sat in a booth that was designed for body types that are a lot closer to what an ideal person would be. When we asked for a table we were informed that there was no other seating. The problem with that statement was we just passed a table that was set for a party of five which was the amount persons we were. I am one of the more normal stature persons and I had to sit with the table a good 12" to 14' away from the table so that two people could just sit (with body parts on the table). Not a pleasant experience."

  • "Started with the Calamari--very good ,tender and served with two sauces to choose from. Also had Prime Rib Beef Tips as appetizer they were delicious with an excellent sauce. Two had Osso Bucco and would order it again. Service was good for such a busy night and waitress was friendly. Loved the setting with so much history. Reservations are a must and parking can be a little difficult...go early if possible but if you have to wait it's worth it!!!"

  • "We were seated quickly and enjoyed the old ambiance of Monti's. Had been on several visits before and although the food was very good, the service was sub-par. Slow to get food and when it did arrive the steak was overdone. Sent it back. Took about an hour to get entree. Ordered peppercorn sauce to go with the filet and it was a cup of mushrooms in a sauce...didn't taste like peppercorn. Checked the menu and saw sauteed mushrooms and peppercorn sauce as separate items and it was if they had been combined. We generally have enjoyed our visits to Monti's...this was an odd exception. Will give them another try based upon past experiences."

  • "Every year we go to Angels Spring Training in Tempe. This is one of our favorite dining places we go back to each year. Great steaks and wine list. Friendly and attentive staff. This year I tried the flat iron steak and it was delicious. Hubbie loves the Prime Rib. It is one of the oldest adobe structures in the area so it is a fun historical site as well. I don't think you will be disappointed. We never are."

I might add that we are new to the Phoenix area and had never eaten here. There was a concert that evening so the entire area was full of loud music and young fans, including Monti's patio, where it was impossible to carry on a conversation. The reservation was right on time, and the service was good. The food was old steakhouse fare, not done especially well or especially warm. The interior is dark and you wind through several rooms......not to my liking. Probably will not go back."

  • "My daughter was visiting and wanted a good Prime Rib. I read the reviews and was very pleased. I had the Rib Eye but wished I ordered the Prime Rib instead. We had the mac and cheese as one of the sides and it was a melt in your mouth yummy. The bread was fresh and hot with lots of flavor. The old building was unique and since we love history, this was the perfect place. I would highly recommend this place and definitely will go back. The only complaint is about the service, not as good as I would hoped. We had reservations but still had to wait 30 minutes and the hostess was not experienced enough to handle the other customers who were irritated. This is the only reason I was unable to give it 5 stars."

  • "Unfortunately, it was raining and gusty the night my friend and I dined. I selected Monti's as she loved it there and this was a Thank you to her. I did make a reservation. We felt the first table was situated where it was too drafty each time the door opened. When asking for a different table, we were told we would have to go to the hostess, and wait to be reseated. Although several empty tables in the main dining room, we were told we couldn't sit there as not enough serving staff. We were seated close to where we had been originally and my friend had told me that if it wasn't better, we were going elsewhere. It was better, but not great. Open view into the staff serving area but not as drafty. Food and the waiter were good."
