A word from Monti's La Casa Vieja
Monti’s La Casa Vieja est. 1871 – 140 years old and still going….
Family owned and operated for over 54 years, Monti’s offers gracious hospitality and great food at reasonable prices. Built in 1871, Monti’s La Casa Vieja (“The Old House”) has a unique western atmosphere. Originally Tempe’s founding pioneer home, Monti’s has been carefully
restored to reveal foot thick adobe walls, river rock in the floors and
even a fountain in one of the many large dining rooms. Guests can dine
in the very room where Sen. Carl Hayden, “The most important person in Arizona history”, was born in 1877. Known for our steaks but even more known for our freshly baked roman bread – it will keep you coming back for more. Monti’s is just a few short steps from the METRO Light Rail stop in downtown Tempe.

Diner Reviews
  • "Monti's never lets you down. The historical setting coupled with a great kitchen makes it a must stop. I recommend the prime rib"

  • "While it was a little warm considering it is summer here in az....the ambiance was perfect and food was amazing. The peach cobbler i shared with my guests was fantastic!"

  • "Restaurant was really nice, great atmosphere.. and the service was very good... The only things I didn't like was the fact that in the reservation I had said it was a Birthday Dinner... and nothing was even said or recognized.. very disappointing. If you're not going to do anything about what is mentioned in the reservation then DON'T ASK! Also, we both had the Ribeye steaks and while they were cooked to perfection there was so much fat.. I've never had a Ribeye where I left almost half the steak and it was because it was all fat... Again very disappointing especially considering the price.... While I did like the restaurant, I would have to think twice before going again because of what I mentioned..."

  • "I've been eating at Monti's often for over 30 years. It is always a pleasure. And whenever I have out of town guests, I bring them here for at least one meal. It's in an historic building, with lots of interesting bits of history (and not the fake kind you see in chain restaurants). And the food is good too. I've never gotten a bad steak. They've modernized their menu recently, but I'm not a "foodie" - all I want is a good steak, a baked potato, and a salad. But the new stuff isn't bad. I've always gotten good service, even on a special holiday like the 4th of July. Try to get seated near the indoor fountain. It has probably been there longer than you've been alive! What else can I say other than I have returned over 100 times."

  • "Was first visit to Monti's . Was headed to Tempe Towne Lake 4th celebration so was looking for place close to lake with good reviews. Food was excellent. Service was good with exception of server not knowing specials for the day. I had to show email received from Monti's for her. Otherwise very enjoyable evening and tasty food"

  • "We always love the service we receive at Montis and the food is always delicious and prepared to our liking."

  • "Steaks were very good. Spinach dip was thin and tasteless, Caesar salad had dressing out if a jar, no flavor. Peach cobbler would have been a great dessert if made with fresh peaches in lieu of canned peaches. Service was poor to non-existent. Nice restaurant for a good steak if that is all you want."

  • "Every time we have come for dinner it has always been fantastic. Adding the bar out side is a great asset we enjoyed watching the sunset we almost missed out reservation."

  • "Clearly a long standing Tempe institution. Everything was good, just nothing special. Unique old decor."

  • "We chose Monti's for two reasons. We wanted good steak for a Fathers' Day treat and we wanted the Arizona grandchildren to be exposed to this classic home and restaurant. Our server helped explain the history, helped us get child friendly meals and the red meat and the pork chop were awesome."

  • "Was disappointed in the quality of the Rib eye Father's Day Special. Meat was cooked to order but was not very tasty and was a bit tuff."

  • "We went here for 2014 Father's Day with teenage grandsons. Michael, our server, was attentive and friendly. We all ordered steaks and the trimmings. The food was good, although our "medium well" steaks ranged from pretty rare to barely medium. We didn't send them back because we were all hungry, but it would be nice for all restaurant chefs to prepare a steak as ordered, rather than how they prefer to cook it. All in all, a good experience and, of course, the ambiance is old town Tempe cattle baron. The trimmings -- twice baked potato, grilled shrimp, etc. -- were tasty and dessert was an excellent finish to a fine meal."

  • "We celebrated Father's Day at Monti's with an early mid-afternoon dinner. My 91 year old mother accompanied my husband and myself. As usual, Monti's did not disappoint. The Prime Rib was superb, the potatoes and vegetables perfect, AND the peach cobbler that we shared was absolutely outstanding!"

  • "Our waiter Jesse was on point and incredibly friendly. We had a large party for my sister's graduation and his service did not skip a beat. "

  • "I ordered the pork chop and it was tough, dry, hard to chew and harder to cut. The server didn't come back until my husband was finished eating. I told the server about the pork chop. She removed my plate with most of the pork chop still on it. They didnt even offer to take it off the bill or comp us in any way. "

  • "The food was very good, but the ovens were not working so we were not able to get Roman bread, which is our favorite."

  • "We took our daughter and her family to lunch at Monti's to celebrate her graduating from ASU. It was Thursday at 1 pm so we had the entire area practically to ourselves. The waiter was outstanding, personable and attentive but not overbearing. Our choices spanned from prime rib to shrimp salad to beef tacos. Everyone was delighted with their choices, including my husband, who is extremely picky about his prime rib. I, not being a meateater, was also very happy their grilled vegetables and sautéed spinach (yum), not to mention their signature Roman bread, which never fails to please. All in all, we could not have picked a better venue to continue the milestone celebration that began the previous evening. Thank you, Monti's. "

  • "Great food, great service, and great ambience. Because of all the private rooms, this would be a great place for groups and private parties. "

  • "Even though I went to Open Table and made reservations for 9 way ahead, we ended up in the back, add on building. I would've liked being placed in the front, historic area, considering the effort made to reserve in a timely manner. The waiter and the food were excellent, and our table was set nicely with real linens. The daughter enjoyed the Mothers Day special, and the rest of us enjoyed what we ordered. Sent "

  • "enough quietness, dim lighting and ambience for asking your special loved one for her hand in marriage; great for bringing the two families together; terrific to celebrate anniversaries ; enjoyable for the offspring that eventually follow; wonderful to honor a lasting 40 years union"

  • "We had a fantastic dining experience! The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, the atmosphere was very enjoyable and relaxing. Monti's is definitely an asset to downtown Tempe and I would recommend the restaurant for a casual or special dining occasion. I have eaten at Monti's several times and have never had a bad experience or meal and the staff is very friendly and professional (top notch)."

  • "We had a reservation for a table for 5. My husband and I arrived approximately 10 minutes early. We checked in and the hostess told us we were the first to arrive. I asked if we could sit outside and wait for the rest of our party, she said she would let us know if the rest of our party arrived through another entrance. We sat outside for another 30 minutes, thinking that our friends had traffic problems. At that time my husband went in to apologize for being late for our reservation. That is when we were told our friends were at a table having appetizers and waiting for us! I was very upset! I hope you can work out this problem in the future, I assumed the hostess had noted our arrival."

  • "I took my 74 year old mom to Monti's for an early mothers day dinner 5/10. She was excited...reminiscing about the good ol' days and how she always enjoyed Monti's. It had been a couple years since I last dined at the Casa...and it was entirely forgettable. I was not expecting to be wowed. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the service and new menu. The food seemed more expensive over all but beef prices are up nationally and frankly, I am happy to pay $22-30 for a genuinely lovely meal. We received a generous basket of the infamous Monti's rosemary bread; hot from the oven...better than ever. Our steaks arrived cooked to perfection! The only disappointment for me was the Desert list...the chocolate explosion was just Meh. "

  • "My husband and I wanted to take my sister to Montis because she wanted prime rib and my husband has high regard for prime rib at Montis. I loved this place for the historical value as well as the menu, though I don't eat red meat very often. We had a very good server who gave my sister and her husband a lot of information about Montis, which they loved. The only problem was the prime rib was a little dry and between 3 people eating it 3 different ways, I was a little disappointed for them. My steak was great but I was unhappy that we've waited to take this 78 year old couple here for their anniversary and birthday and it wasn't as stellar of an experience as its been the 30 other times."

  • "Monti's is housed in an historic adobe house (tastefully enarged) and filled with fascinating photographs and other memorabilia of Arizona history. This makes it a fine place to take out-of-town visitors. The food is consistently good, especially the beef. What I like best, though, is the quiet--no blaring music, no loud voices. Our group of six was able to have a real conversation without raising our voices."

  • "This was a great dining experience. We were greeted at the front door by the live, long-horned bull and then made our way to the table via the slick metal slide, feeling like a little kid again. The service was outstanding and the food delicious. The view is remarkable, which included an incredible sunset. We were in town visiting from Oregon with my brothers from CA. This restaurant was recommended by our Best Western shuttle driver and we were not disappointed. I would highly recommend it."

  • "We arrived about 25 minutes early and were able to be seated early, even though we were still waiting on one member of our party. The staff were very friendly, and the server and service were quite accommodating. Overall we were pleased with the food and service, and would dine there again. "

  • "The age and the décor make this truly a unique find and a very memorable dining experience. The wait staff was very knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. The food was cooked to perfection. The presentation was very good and the flavor was outstanding. I would definitely recommend Monti's for lunch or dinner for a memorable meal."

  • "We were just three...but one of us has a severe hearing loss, and one of us had a special birthday..(85)....We needed a quiet place, and acknowledgement of the birthday. Both were supplied gracefully.....We even had to have a clean-up when we arranged florwers that we brought into a vase filled with water. All was taken care of. Thank You!"

  • "We could not have asked for a better evening to catch up with friends from out of town. The location offered rich history and charm. There were many appealing menu selections to choose from . . . although we all ended up ordering the Monday night Prime Rib special. None of us were disappointed!! We particularly appreciated the quiet atmosphere and sense of privacy offered as we enjoyed dinner. This allowed comfortable conversation. Our server was very attentive without being overbearing. It was a quiet evening in the restaurant and there was no sense of urgency for us to leave . . . so we didn't. We will return often!!"

  • "Also good food here, but the prices have really added up. Extra for the dressing on the salad and it's a small cup....one might want more. Extra for the "dressings" on the baked potato. For 2 adults and 2 children it cost $90.00. It is too expensive to go here very often. We love the taste of the food and have been customers for 20 years, but am disappointed in all the up charges, as they so add to the cost of the meal!"
