  • A bit of a disappointment

This was our 3rd trip to Monticello's. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a disappointment. First, there were not enough servers. We waited over a 1/2 hour to get our orders in, over another 1/2 hour to get our food and over another 1/2 hour to get out coffee. The place was mobbed, with insuffient staff to accommodate the customers. We were 3 couples. I ordered the stuffed chicken which was delicious. My girlfriend ordered Chicken Monticello, also very good. It stops there. The salads were half the size, although I think they lowered the prices. 3 in our party ordered the filet mignon special at $39. My hubby got the end cut which was a bit tough. Another in the party ordered med well and got it med rare. By the time they brought it back cooked the way she asked, the rest of us were finished with our meal. The last in our party ordered the porterhouse steak. He said it was ok. I have always had a great meal here, but the other 2 couples had never been to Monticello's, and I believe they will not rush to return. They did take the coffee off of our bill.

I was given a table beside the door with even though I had an infant with me and it was freezing. My group ordered salads to start. Took almost 40 mins to arrive. The entrees took over 1 1/2 hours to come out from the kitchen. Our waiter never came over to check on us after the food arrived. We finally had to take our credit card to him. The food was great but given the horrendous service i would never return.

We went with 2 other couples, very small even louder it was very difficult to have a conversation. The service needs improvement once meal came we did not see the waiter for some time. Water glasses were empty for more than 30 minutes, The menu online has not been updated. The dessert menu was nothing special very small portions. Do not think we will go back. Too many better Italian restaurants in the area.

The restaurant was very noisy. I could hardly talk to my fiancé while we were there. And we weren't too thrilled with how the hostess seated us in a small table while another couple that arrived after us got to be seated in a bigger table right next to us that was empty. It may not be our first choice to come back the second time!

Admittedly, my wife and I are regulars here, but that's because they never fail to exceed my expectations. Case in point, we were there on Sunday and I ordered a special I'd not had - short rib over Parmesan risotto in a Marsala sauce. They brought be a knife, though I'm not sure why! The meat was so tender, it just flaked away from the bone. The flavor was spot on and perfectly complemented by the risotto! The chef/owner told me after the meal that she likes to make this in colder weather... well, I can't wait for winter now!

Average at best. Last time we were there, I ordered the pork chop. It was so exceptional that my group returned with the intent of repeating my experience. Sadly, that did not happen. Pork was tough and dry. Duck ordered by a friend was chewy. The restaurant noise level made it difficult to have conversation without yelling. On the other hand, our servers were delightful and efficient. This was our third visit. Don't know that we will return.

Went to Monticello to celebrate my parents anniversary. As usual the food was delicious. Loved that you have a choice to pick from the regular menu and two Pre Fixe menus. Some of us had from the PreFixe and others from the regular menu. Prices on the Pre Fixes were reasonable. We had a great waiter. Only thing wrong was that he was the only waiter on and he was running around trying to accamodate everyone. This made service a little slow. When he was at your table, he was great and attentive.

A friend and I dined here on Friday night. The food was excellent but service was lacking. Had to ask for bread (which was very good) and never brought a cooler for our wine, though we did ask. Almost removed a plate I was still eating from, and interrupted a bit too forcefully several times to ask if we needed anything. Love the small cozy room and the scallops were very tasty!

I had been to Monticello's a few years back and have been wanting to come back. So, I thought for my birthday, I'd come with my mom, dad and son. Being my parents are elderly, coming for a 6pm seating was perfect. Not crowded or too loud. The fixed meal price of $20 was the best and worth every bite! We all had it, except my mom. She wanted her fish! Very good, from beginning to end. The chef came out to talk with us and my mom couldn't compliment her salmon dish enough. Our waitress Meghan, was adorable and very attentive to all our needs. It was a success!

We dined here on a very busy Saturday night. Despite the crowds in Red Bank, our dining experience was top notch. The food was tastefully prepared, service was friendly and prompt and the overall atmosphere in Monticello made it a most enjoyable evening. We tried the mussels as an appetizer, the pork chop with gorgonzola cheese, the pappardelle Monticello and the chocolate tort for desert. All were very good!

This restaurant is perhaps one of my worst dining experiences. I went there specifically for the $20 three course special and the entrees were disgusting. We ordered Chicken Scarpariello and Chicken Francese as the main course. The menu nor the waiter were able to disclose the manner of preparation so we took a chance...not a good choice. The Scarpariello was a Breast (not a hacked up chicken in pieces, some on the bone, that is traditionally Italian) drowning in a thick Demi-Glaze sauce with no mushrooms. The Francese was also a Breast (not pounded as Traditionally Italian) and when we requested Pasta with tomato sauce instead of Potato, the waiter replied that the Francese sauce would have to be on the pasta. Imagine no tomato sauce here!

We had a great meal! The food was delicious, and nicely presented. We got there early (6:00) because we had tickets to a show at 8. Had to skip dessert, but the waiter gave us 2 desserts to go. Servers were polite and friendly, but not very attentive. If the place had been crowded, I don't know how long it would have taken. Also funny that the restaurant's answering machine was on speaker (loud in the almost empty space!). I would definitely go back, but not if I had something scheduled afterwards.

Service was poor. When seated server did not come over for at least ten minutes. When server did come we had to ask for specials. Two at our party asked for the steak and server indicated he was not sure if they had any left. Came back five minutes later and indicated they were out and this was not a special. Bus boy when came over to clear our table and put the tray on our table so he could remove our plates!!! We had a birthday celebration and when we asked the server to bring a dessert and if they could sing he answered they were bad singers so they could not accommodate. Bathrooms were disgusting!!! Food was good but could not overcome the service!! Overall it's a C minus at best!!

The main meal was delicious, I had salmon and shrimp and my friend had the Cod special. Both delicious. We had the mozzarella caprese for an app which was very average. It took an extremely long time to get our main meals (about 45 min) and when my salmon came out it was lukewarm and the cod was piping hot. The restaurant was fairly empty at this time so it wasn't due to being crowded. On a side note, I appreciate art but working in the law enforcement field specializing in sex crimes and child abuse I felt a few of the paintings were inappropriate. Needless to say plenty of other restaurants with great food so I won't be returning.

I was looking to try a new restaurant in Red Bank. I had a recommendation for another restaurant but was not able to get a reservation. I read the reviews for Monticello and decided to give it a try. I am soooooo glad the other restaurant didn't work out. We had a fabulous meal at Monticello! Atmosphere was inviting and comfortable. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Food was delicious from start to finish. The prices were very reasonable. We loved it! Monticello was an awesome find! I wanted to keep it my little secret but they deserve the review! Can't wait to go back.

For a beautiful Sat. night in the summer w/ a concert happening, you'd expect a packed restaurant. Well, that was not the case; we did not need a reservation, but our window seat was waiting us that we requested. The waiter FINALLY came over, then disappeared after giving us menus. 15minutes later he reappeared and was rather disappointed that we did not order a "special" that he went through the "trouble" of describing. W e had to ask for water, bread, and ice. When we finally got the 3 slices of bread, we had to ask for more, and did not get it until after our meal arrived. Although the food was good we would not go back. Service was slow and rude, & for $25 for a veal dish, I want at least a salad w/it.

This restaurant proves that although Red Bank is a popular town and higher prices/smaller portions seem to be the signal that a restaurant is going to be something exceptional and worth paying the extra for, the formula doesn't always work! And this one just DOES NOT measure up. At first appearance it seems to have all the trappings of a successful dining experience but in the end the food was not tasty enough to justify it's prices. Nice atmosphere and lovely accoutrements(cool dishes, snappy looking silverware, pleasant service etc.) are nice BUT in the end it's the taste and the price that truly matter, no? And our thoughts (four experienced adults) were all the same. Somewhat pretentious and WAY overpriced for the quality. Sorry.
