Diner Reviews
  • "Service was poor. When seated server did not come over for at least ten minutes. When server did come we had to ask for specials. Two at our party asked for the steak and server indicated he was not sure if they had any left. Came back five minutes later and indicated they were out and this was not a special. Bus boy when came over to clear our table and put the tray on our table so he could remove our plates!!! We had a birthday celebration and when we asked the server to bring a dessert and if they could sing he answered they were bad singers so they could not accommodate. Bathrooms were disgusting!!! Food was good but could not overcome the service!! Overall it's a C minus at best!!"

  • "The main meal was delicious, I had salmon and shrimp and my friend had the Cod special. Both delicious. We had the mozzarella caprese for an app which was very average. It took an extremely long time to get our main meals (about 45 min) and when my salmon came out it was lukewarm and the cod was piping hot. The restaurant was fairly empty at this time so it wasn't due to being crowded. On a side note, I appreciate art but working in the law enforcement field specializing in sex crimes and child abuse I felt a few of the paintings were inappropriate. Needless to say plenty of other restaurants with great food so I won't be returning."

  • "I was looking to try a new restaurant in Red Bank. I had a recommendation for another restaurant but was not able to get a reservation. I read the reviews for Monticello and decided to give it a try. I am soooooo glad the other restaurant didn't work out. We had a fabulous meal at Monticello! Atmosphere was inviting and comfortable. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Food was delicious from start to finish. The prices were very reasonable. We loved it! Monticello was an awesome find! I wanted to keep it my little secret but they deserve the review! Can't wait to go back."

  • "For a beautiful Sat. night in the summer w/ a concert happening, you'd expect a packed restaurant. Well, that was not the case; we did not need a reservation, but our window seat was waiting us that we requested. The waiter FINALLY came over, then disappeared after giving us menus. 15minutes later he reappeared and was rather disappointed that we did not order a "special" that he went through the "trouble" of describing. W e had to ask for water, bread, and ice. When we finally got the 3 slices of bread, we had to ask for more, and did not get it until after our meal arrived. Although the food was good we would not go back. Service was slow and rude, & for $25 for a veal dish, I want at least a salad w/it."

  • "We eat at this restaurant quite often and the food is always delicious and beautifully prepared. We ate there Saturday night and, as usual, the food was terrific. However, our waiter was not. The empty dishes and glasses were not removed from the table and the table became very crowded."

  • "We've enjoyed dining at Monticello at least 5 times and have never been disappointed. The food is carefully prepared, ingredients are fresh, menu is creative, and specials are always interesting. Wait staff is knowledgeable, pacing of the meal is spot on."

  • "Our party arrived at Monticello for an early Saturday night dinner (5:30pm). We were seated and water was poured for all. The gentleman pouring the water noticed that one of the glasses he was pouring into was broken and he replaced it with another. Bread was brought to the table and, while eating the bread, my wife but into some glass. We then noticed small pieces glass all over the table and alerted our waiter. We were relocated to another table. The waiter then made the inappropriate joke "you're not the type of people to throw glass on the table and try and get a free meal!!" Wow. Not funny. The food was good, we paid full price, and you would think we would at least get an apology from the manager!!!"

  • "We selected the Monticello based on comments from others on Trip Advisor and Yelp. Great Food / Quiet and we could take our time for Dinner. BYOB so bring a Red and White. Recommended !!!"

  • "Server should let diners know about fixed price menu. Cappuchino very strong, very small and very expensive. On a quiet Tuesday nite diners should be enticed back and not left thinking about venturing to neighboring restaurants next time in Red Bank."

  • "Started with Clams Arrabbiata. An Italian take on drunken clams and highly recommended. The clams were tender and steamed perfectly but the real start in this dish is the broth which is served with points of toasted bread. Save some table bread or ask for another loaf so you can enjoy every ounce of this rich broth. I had the Shrimp Notre Dame. The sauce was a base of cream and butter with brandy deglazing the shrimp and finished with the addition of a red sauce. The shrimp were translucent, the sauce full bodied but not unbalanced by too much cheese. My wife had a special dish of Mahi Mahi that was excellent . Matre'd Robert stopped by our table (I like to share a glass of whatever wine I'm drinking) for a few words about dishes."

  • "Always glad to find small Red Bank restaurant with great menu. Food we ordered was super. However the service was terrible plus delivery time on food was very long between courses. My water glass however was never empty. Plus making reservation- tried to call. No return call. Took time that showed available on open table to find serval empty tables all nite. Would like to go back but ...."

  • "My wife and I are always looking for high quality BYO places. We tried This gem the week before Easter and wow!!! I felt like I had stepped through a portal into one of my favorite eateries in Roma. We've been there 6 times and have tried different dishes each time. We've not had a bad bite. Everything is fresh, prepared to order, and requests for substitutions are graciously honored. The staff is friendly and attentive. I love this place!!!"

  • "This is an amazing restaurant that i go to frequently. The food is outstanding and the service is very good. My husband and i often order the specials & the pasta dishes are all unbelieveable. We have been here roughly 20 times and never have been disappointed it's consistently quality food and service. We also love that its Byob"

  • "A very enjoyable food experience from apps to entres. One has to accept the noise level of an open dining space and the proximity of adjacent tables but those points withstanding I would consider this restaurant worthy of a return visit."

  • "On tonight menu, we had the house salad and tuna carpaccio, which was on special, as appetizers. The tune capriccio was excellent. Very fresh with a slightly spicy aioli which enhanced the overall taste without covering it. It also was supposed to have a honey wasabi sauce, but I asked them to skip that since I don't like to mix sweet and savory. For the main course, we had Chicken Monticello which was outrageous and the Seafood Risotto. The chicken breast was huge and very juicy and succulent. It came with russet potatoes. The risotto was equally delicious. Very fresh with Salmon, with a light mustard sauce. It enhanced the flavor beautifully. It also had calamari, shrimp, mussels, clams. Both meals were well-served."

  • "As usual the food was excellent each dish was impecibly prepared. The scallops were, delicious and perfectly opaque inside, the rissotto creamy soft with just the right amount of seasoning and a light hand with salt. My shrimp was tender and translucent as were the clams, a result of perfect timing at the sauté station. My wife's shrimp Notre dame was excellent especially the red sauce finished with a touch of cream and sea food stock. This is the most under rated restaurant in the red bank area. Bring your best bottle of wine on your visit. A final note, the food is very consistent no doubt the result of the watchful eye and masterful hand of chef Kathy. "

  • "This restaurant has good food in a long narrow setting right in the center of Red Bank. The food is excellent and plentiful as the portions are large. There were mostly large groups of 6 to 10 at the tables as it seems they cater to larger parties and celebrations with their type of meals. Service is attentive and effective with waiters and busboys tending to your needs. The wait for our meal was over an hour which leads me to believe they are a scratch kitchen that prepares meals to order which takes longer. All in all I would say this is a place to get a good meal at a fair price. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody with a larger party having a special occasion for a family"

  • "You can't beat fresh pasta and that's what you get here. Service was a little shaky but it seemed our server may have been new. It took quite the inquisition to get to the bottom of a special appetizer. But we got to the bottom of it and then got to the bottom of the plate too. The table next to us had another server who seemed quite professional and knowledgeable about the restaurant. We had dinner before a show at the Count Bassie Theater (which is awesome) and just walked there from the restaurant."

  • "We were looking for a reservation for 4 on a Saturday night in Red Bank and one was available on open table for Monticello. We took a shot and tried it and we were very pleased. The decor is very nice, comfortable but classy. Service was excellent and attentive. Our food from the appetizers, mussels, seafood arabiata appetizers and salads were great. 2 of us had the pork chop which was fantastic. A double cut large chop, cooked to perfection and they were not thrown when we asked for it without the goat cheese. In fact they were extremely accomodating for any request to tweak their dishes. It is a BYOB which is always nice. Wouls highly recommend and look forward to dining here again."

  • "Our Saturday night experience began when we walked into the restaurant at 7:45 for a 7:45 reservation and were seated immediately with people waiting. We were promptly served water and bread and wine glasses as this is a BYO and we had a bottle with us. at that point we noticed just how loud this restaurant was. in fact I could not hear my wife (who was sitting directly across from me) unless we yelled at each other. The couple at the next table appeared to be arguing when we figured out they were just talking to each other was well. The service was great as our waitress came over, yelled the specials at us (since we could not hear here either) and took our order. The food was delivered promptly with attention paid to presentation"

  • "We went to Monticello for the first time with another couple this past Saturday. The staff was very friendly and professional. Our waiter asked us more than once if we were in need of anything else, which was appreciated. The food was delicious. The bread was delicious as a start, then from our calamari appetizer to our 14oz pork shop straight through to our molten chocolate cake dessert, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We would recommend Monticello as a staple in our restaurant rotation!"

  • "Dined there on a Saturday night. Reservations are a must. We had a 6:45. Food took quite a while, but arrived hot and delicious. Noisy and busy. Liked it, but it was a bit hectic, as there is only one path down center of restaurant and there is constantly traffic running by the table: Waitresses, hostess, food runners, patrons, etc. Never stops. Tough to relax. Would like to try it on a Friday night instead. Maybe a little more relaxed? Food was very good."

  • "I ordered grouper off the menu. They were out of grouper (we were there at 5:45). Instead they were offering cod in the very same presentation and calling it a special. The "light fresh pomodoro sauce" was so heavy that I couldn't taste the cod, and the risotto was undercooked, very crunchy rice . Everyone else was happy with their food. The service was very attentive."

  • "We've been there many times and it's always a great experience. This particular time they were out of a lot of dishes, and of course they all happened to be what our friends wanted to order, but they found other items and were very happy with their meals. My husband ordered the Chicken Monticello which used to be his favorite, but the sauce has changed and he didn't like it as much. Over all we had a great time with our friends and will be back again."

  • "We were out with 4 people celebrating a birthday. I would recommend this restaurant for the food, but unattentive waitress and I kindly informed her that other parties would be so understanding. During our entire meal she did not ask once if everything was ok. Had to ask for water refills . Also, we asked to change our table since it was so cold near front door and they refused even though the party next to us moved and they asked after us. would think twice before returning. The food was Excellent."
