We've been coming to Monte's
nearly 30 years. The good is always good -- well-prepared, fresh ingredients. The service kind, knowledgeable, efficient. Not the fanciest place, but better food than a lot of restaurants that are slicker but don't do as good a job."

Can't top this neighborhood gem.
Baked Artichoke is to die for."

This place is amazing. The shrimp
montes is to die for. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgable and efficicient. Atmosphere is charming. Highly recommend!!"

We booked Monte's after reading
reviews and were not disappointed. The service was good and discrete and the food was excellent. Had we not already got other restaurants booked for the length of our stay we would certainly have gone back again"

My GF and I were in NY and decided
to try Montes. It was one of the best dining experiences EVER! The service provided by Tony was prompt and courteous. He suggested without being pushy and he was very personable. The food was portioned just right with just the right amount of seasoning. I had chicken parm and my gf had chicken marsala. Both delicious. The asparagus appetizer was perfect. Both romantic and homey, make this restaurant a priority stop."

Excellent, simply excellent..great
owner, professional and nice staff, you can feel Italian atmosphere and mostly, good Italian food and wine!! We hope to have the chance to go to Monte's because it's the best in NYC..milanista italiano honeymoon vacation, july 28th 2014"

The food certainly lived up to the
restauarant's reputation. It was wonderful. However, our waiter seemed distracted and overwhelmed, leaving us with empty glasses and long waits between visits."
Dined on 7/27/2014
Great dining experience. Took my
daughter there during her internship in NYC and what a find. We were greeted promptly by Peter who was the host and the bartender. After a couple of great Sangra's, we sat down to have a wonderful meal from the delicious gnocchi to the veal entree. For dessert we had a classic and wonderful Tiramisu! Being of Italian descent, I'm very picky with "Italian" food and this was excellent. Dining room was full of classic decor and humming with conversations. Great touch by the Chef/Owner to come out and share samples he cooked with us. I will go back and recommend it to everyone."
Dined on 7/20/2014
Decided to try Monte's after
reading the outstanding reviews and we were not disappointed! The food was outstanding, the service was prompt and attentive and the place was quaint. Both the chef/owner(?) and the manager came over to chat and make sure we were happy. Will definitely go back and would recommend to anyone in the village looking for a great Italian meal."

This restaurant has been a
favorite of my husband and I for over 20 years. Always reliable. My favorite dish is the veal bolognese, which is prosciutto and melted mozarella in a wine sauce, NOT meat sauce. I get this dish every time. No one does it better and I have tried many times.. Also, my husband is a huge fan of shrimp ala Monte. We always share the stuffed artichoke which is delectable. Sometimes if we are not completed stuffed ourselves, we get zabaglione. Montes is a village staple and it has old time charm and intimacy. Not fancy but also very reasonably priced."

Growing up in Greenwich Village
and watching the loss of most of our classics over the last 40 years, I'm praying Monte's can continue to live on for years to come. We've lost Rocco's, Pizza Box, gosh, even The Back Fence bit the dust but Montes in all it's old neighborhood glory seems to have weathered the storm. Go for the price, go for the blue collar bar, go for the old school waiters but mostly go for the food - classic and hearty, just like mom used to make. Montes will surprise you with its perfect red sauce and surprisingly large menu - is it food critic perfection - Probably, not. But, who really wants fluff and pomp for supper when you can feast on cannelloni and amazing lasagna instead?"
Dined on 7/9/2014
our dinner here was great. the
homemade pasta melts in your mouth. the buffalo mozarrela was straight from Italy. the caesar salad was mediocre but not a deal breaker. we weill definetly go back."
Dined on 7/5/2014
Back in the day, my husband and I
had our first date at Monty's. I decided to take my closest friends to dinner there last weekend for no special reason except it held nice memories for me. The restaurant was very crowded but we were taken up to the second floor where we were treated to a "private" dinner with the world cup on a video screen. We had a great dinner. The food is solid Italian and the wine selection was decent. This restaurant is a great place for an easy dinner."

It is always a pleasure going to
Monte's, whether for a "regular" dinner or a special occasion. Everyone always has a good time."
Dined on 6/15/2014
I always hesitate to recommend a
restaurant to friends when visiting the city but this place is the exception. The food, service and atmosphere is always top notch. We make this a stop every time we come to NYC."
Dined on 6/14/2014
Montes is a wonderful place that
is family run. They make homemade pasta to die for and the ambiance is relaxing and welcoming. The staff is fantastic. I can't say enough about this wonderful place. If you come to NYC, don't miss it."
Dined on 6/9/2014
What a fabulous restaurant. The
fresh pastas are delicate and the sauces are delicious. During dinner we were greatest by the owner, who made us like we are regulars."
Dined on 6/9/2014
I love this restaurant! It is a
must stop every time I get to NYC. IHave dined at Montie's numerous times. Last night, the food was excellent as always, but the service was disappointing. Our waiter had a bad attitude. He did the minimum possible and acted like it was an imposition on his valuable time to help us. The ultimate was when he slapped the check on the table, and walked off. His rudeness really was shocking, as service in the past has always been excellent. The great food could not trump the bad service. I was disappointed in Montie's for the first time."

We were very excited to return to
Monte's. It had been a year since out last visit to NY and our last dinner at the restaurant. We were greeted by Peter who was so friendly and welcoming. We arrived early so he sat us at the bar during out short wait for our table. We were able to score the single outdoor table on the front veranda and it was a gorgeous night. We started with wine and a hot seafood app with mixed shell fish and eggplant stuffed with ricotta. We also had the soft shell crap app. AMAZING. So good we couldn't wait for our entrees. Hubby had the veal osso bucco. It was so tender and cooked to perfection. I had gnocchi bolognese. It was the best homemade potato gnocchi I have ever eaten. Can't wait to go back again! Yum"
Dined on 6/1/2014
Discovered this spot during the
Foods of NY food tour and enjoyed the bolognese so much that we decided to come back for dinner. Food was excellent. Glad we came back. Staff was so accomodating of us with our 8-month old. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the Village and highly reccommend the place!"

Traveling from Georgia for a week
long trip to the city, our family enjoyed a fabulous Itsluan meal here. My Husband's favorite movie is the Godfather and he felt like we were in a scene out of the movie! The food was spot on perfection! Dessert a Must!! Tiramisu is the best ie ever had!"
Dined on 5/24/2014
We were hoping to like this place
to use for a large event in the future, but the food was mediocre throughout, particularly the vegetables, bread, and chicken piccata and chicken parm. The best things were the marinara sauce and the tri color salad, which were both good, not great."
Dined on 5/15/2014
Great food and service as usual,
the chicken with prosciutto and mozzarella was superb"
Dined on 5/10/2014
The food was very good --
recommend the baby artichokes --- never had them done this way -- they were excellent --- homemade Pasta and Chicken Picatta were very good. The pasta and capers were fresh and flavorful. Stopped in for late lunch so we had the whole place to ourselves. Would have to try again in the evening to really rate the service. Prices for NYC excellent. "

This was a restaurant we found on
Open Table when we were looking for a small neighborhood place to have a nice quiet Italian lunch. After reading the reviews, we decided to give it a try. Wow!! What a find! Everything that can be made from scratch is made there in the kitchen. I had the Veal Marcela which was to die for! Very tender, which isn't always the case with veal. My wife had Veal Tortellini which she was crazy about. The wine selection was good American and Italian selections and all very reasonably priced! Not the typical NY prices you find in must of the bigger restaurants. Our server was very charming and if we didn't see what we wanted on the menu to just ask and the Chef would try to accommodate. "
Dined on 5/4/2014
Loved the warm welcome from the
waiter. And the classic American-Italian cuisine. A comforting spot with some good food, and unusually good cheesecake to cap off the meal. "
Dined on 5/3/2014
Had reservations for 19 on a
Saturday night. Group had great fun. Peter worked with me to provide a fixed menu, yet had enough variety to satisfy all. Prices reasonable, food excellent and Franco as our host/waiter handled our group efficiently and effectively. He treated us like family and was attentive to all of our needs along with just plain being fun... Thumbs up. I would visit again."
Dined on 5/3/2014
Consensus was the food was good
but we could have used some vegetables. May be tgat we are unfamiliar with the custom but a plate of pasta on its own is not a balanced meal and we did not feel like coughing up another 8 bucks per person for some veggies. Maybe if we could have added a salad to our pasta entree for a couple if bucks it might have felt better. "

I first went to Monte's 30 years
ago on my first visit to NYC with my husband. Still have the husband and am still going back to Monte's whenever I can. Because it doesn't change. And in a time and city where things come and go with the whims of the Time's Food section, this neighborhood place remains timeless. Good reliable (unfancy) Italian "family" food at great prices, locals at the bar who don't even mind that I'm a Miami Heat fan, and charming old school waiters. "
Dined on 4/30/2014
Greenwich Village used to have
lots of these old-time Italian joints where you could get a decent meal without going bankrupt. They're all gone, giving way to yuppie, loud, over-priced places. Monte's is old time, for sure. The entrees are generous, good and very reasonable, and you can have a conversation without having to shout at your dining companions. There's wine by the bottle, or the house wine in a full or half carafe that is quite good. I definitely will make it my neighborhood place."
Dined on 4/28/2014
I went with a group of 6 and I had
the chicken parmigiana which might be the best I've ever had. It was fantastic and the pasta in marinara sauce that went with it was equally delicious. My husband had the chicken francese and was extremely happy with that. In fact everyone was very happy with their order except the person who got the chicken rollatini. We all tasted it and agreed it was subpar. But her sister shared her francese with her so she still left happy. :-) Good atmosphere, easy for visiting with a group, and the service was very good."
Dined on 4/27/2014
This place has been around for
years and you feel every minute of it. The menu doesn't look as though it's changed since the fifties. The bread was tasty, but I'm sure it's not house made. The antipasti platters were OK, but it's hard to mess those up. Everything that the ktichen cooked was just OK. The choice of red sauce or white cream sauce pretty much applied to all of the pastas. The calamari in white wine sauce was tasteless. And the waiter didn't seem to know much about the menu, other options or really care."
Dined on 4/26/2014
Terrific buzz, friendly service,
excellent food - a bit noisy."
Dined on 4/26/2014
This was a special night for us.
We had anticipated a nice celebration in NYC after a day touring a college. My daughter had eaten here before and had the pasta carbonara and loved it. We both ordered it and sent them back! If I had been served the dish and been asked to guess what it was, I would not have guessed carbonara. They brought our dishes back - no explanation or apology - and the food was more palatable, but cabonara? I still would not have guessed it. "
Dined on 4/21/2014
We were visiting NY and went here
for Easter dinner. Service was great - the waiters very friendly and knowledgeable, the owner very inviting. I would recommend to any of my friends."
Dined on 4/20/2014
Excellent food! Great
service! Very attentive waite staff The filet mignon was excellent The pasta and meatballs was delicious The pasta sauce is perfect!"
Dined on 4/19/2014
We were looking for a
"quintessential village Italian spot" and this place seemed to fit the bill. It was one of the first warm spring evenings and we were lucky enough to score the one outside table. Very romantic and fun to watch Greenwich village go by as we started with a couple glasses of wine. The ambience was great. Service provided by older Italian gentlemen (right out of central casting) was personable and attentive. I'm sorry to report that the food (at least that night) was mediocre at best. The bread was stale. The fried calimari tasteless and pesto pasta just OK. We had a nice evening but definitely more about the atmosphere and not the food."
Dined on 4/12/2014
Our waiter, Franco, was terrific.
The food arrived promptly, leaving us time to relax and enjoy our meal before leaving for the theater. The food was excrllent, delicious and beautifully prepared. We will definitely return."
Dined on 4/12/2014
This is the real deal. If you want
great Italian food, head here instead of Little Italy."
Dined on 4/7/2014
Montes' has been around for more
than 90 years and there's a reason; it's great! the food is excellent, good variety, traditional Italian food, but with modern touches (gluten free pasta!), carafe's of wine as well as bottles. Very experienced waiters, they know how to pace the meal; nothing too rushed or too long a wait. A very good value, especially in Manhattan!"
