  • "Our waiter, Franco, was terrific. The food arrived promptly, leaving us time to relax and enjoy our meal before leaving for the theater. The food was excrllent, delicious and beautifully prepared. We will definitely return."

  • "We were looking for a "quintessential village Italian spot" and this place seemed to fit the bill. It was one of the first warm spring evenings and we were lucky enough to score the one outside table. Very romantic and fun to watch Greenwich village go by as we started with a couple glasses of wine. The ambience was great. Service provided by older Italian gentlemen (right out of central casting) was personable and attentive. I'm sorry to report that the food (at least that night) was mediocre at best. The bread was stale. The fried calimari tasteless and pesto pasta just OK. We had a nice evening but definitely more about the atmosphere and not the food."

  • "This is the real deal. If you want great Italian food, head here instead of Little Italy."

  • "Montes' has been around for more than 90 years and there's a reason; it's great! the food is excellent, good variety, traditional Italian food, but with modern touches (gluten free pasta!), carafe's of wine as well as bottles. Very experienced waiters, they know how to pace the meal; nothing too rushed or too long a wait. A very good value, especially in Manhattan!"

  • "Visited Monte's for a friends birthday whilst in New York. The service was fantastic (Franco really made the night), the food was outstanding and the whole experience was well worth getting off the beaten track to find. Franco really made the night special by choosing our food for us (there is a menu if you prefer, but be brave, you won't be disappointed). He made us feel extra special and made our friends birthday a night to remember. Not too pricey - we paid a lot more for a lot less elsewhere during our stay. If you are in New York definitely look this place up."

  • "Monte's has been around for many years and has the feel of a family run restaurant. The food is traditional comfort food, good and reasonably priced, which is rare in this neighborhood. On weekends, the restaurant can be very noisy and tables are close together. Service is good but not particularly attentive. Overall, a good fallback and a fine place for a nostalgic meal."

  • "A group of us went to dinner on Saturdsy. The bread was not the best, the appetizers were OK. None of our main courses were great. From fish to pasta, there was nothing to write home about. Would never go back."

  • "Just what you want a Greenwich Village Trattoria to look and feel like. Perfect old-world ambience, slightly grumpy waiters with peculiar accents. My guests (New Yorkers) and I loved our pre-off-Broadway theatre meal."

  • "We ate here sat after a last minute reservation and it turned out to be an excellent choice. In a great neighbourhood the menu is authenthic italian and very reasonable (as are the drinks!). On arrival we took a seat at the bar and were helped to drinks by an extremely friendly and helpful barmaid (ruth i think) who also managed some recomendaations for later in the evening. We were then seated and the waiting staff were very helpful and good fun. We had the caprese salad the spagetti meatballs and the cannolini. All good but the cannollini was genuinely better tha i've had in italy argentina or anywhere else. Overall a great spot with wonderful staff!"

  • "When I lived in the West Village, I went to Monte's quite often. I loved their old New York ambiance, the waiters were old school in a John O'Hara kind of way, and the food was good in the same old school kind of way. This was my second recent visit there, and though the ambience hasn't changed, and I really like that, the food has become a bit... tired. It may be the same food as I used to eat there, but times have changed, and the recipes could use some updating. If they can achieve this and still keep the great old-world atmosphere, I guarantee the place will experience a renaissance."

  • "Loved the food. Maitre di was very personable. Our waiter was very slow and not personable at all. The quality of the food and the home-y environment made up for it."

  • "I am biased...been going to Monte's for 40 years! Never a bad meal there. Delectable pasta...divine Bolognese...nice Italian wine selections...love seeing the same waiters and the owner mingling happily with customers."

  • "Monte's has amazing food, (mushroom pasta is the best), and provides amazing service. I have been here numerous times and will continue to go back. They treat you like one of the family and are always looking to improve your experience."

  • "Old style red sauce Italian. Food fine, not distinguished. Prices are fair to the consumers. Was disappointed in how long the service took and how inefficient it was -- omitted dishes, lack of synchronization, etc. And it is very cramped."

  • "The food and service here was excellent. We were a party of four. Our table was ready when promised (we were 15 minutes late). Don't miss Monte's when looking for Italian food in the village."

  • "This is the first time (in 7-8 visits) we have been here that it didn't rate 5 stars in all areas and it all has to do with the service. We had a large group (14) and they were very busy but we also had a reservation so that's not an acceptable excuse - but that's the one we got. Having to wait 30 minutes to get our first drink order completely filled is impossible to overcome. The great food almost did but unfortunately it couldn't. We'll be back on our next trip to the city but I have to say a little of the mystique is gone."

  • "My book club was attending "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Player's Theater and needed somewhere close to have dinner pre-show. Based upon the theater's recommendation, we chose Monte's Trattoria. It was wonderful! I had made the reservation for eight of us, but then we were nine. They set up an additional chair without any complaints or comments. The food was excellent, our waiter was a gem and the wine was both reasonable and delicious. We ordered three appetizers for the table and each had an entree. We had several carafes of wine as well as some mixed drinks. The bill worked out to $50pp including tip! We did not stay for dessert, but that's probably great too. Would definitely go back to Monte's."

  • "Came to NY for Comedy Cellar, Montes right around corner. Appetizers fabulous (best fried zucchini in 50 years -- you wouldn't think that could be made notable), huge selection of mains, including customary upper mid-priced Italian classics and plenty of house specials. Long wait line when we left, so make reservations (at least for Saturday). Somewhat closed-in feeling if you're not used to dining in NYC."

  • "It is the best Italian restaurant we have found anywhere in Manhattan. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. The ambiance is just what you would expect from an authentic Italian restaurant. It is not touristy, as many restaurants in Little Italy and Theatre District The restaurant itself is cozy and very well kept and well run. We can't wait to return and would recommend it to anyone."

  • "This is a very special restaurant, but you could eat there often. It's iconic as a West Village upscale place, and it's very Italian. The service is professional, but still warm and friendly. The menu is exquisite, but still we were unprepared for the quality and creativity of the dinners we ordered, and the chef came out to greet us. After generations in the family, Monte's Trattoria has perfected the Italian dinner. We don't live in NYC, but we're recommending to friends, and will always plan dinner there when we're in the city!"

  • "This is one of the few places that still serves scungilli and doesn't over cook it until it tastes like rubber. This restaurant hasn't changed much in the past 40 years when I went to school in the Village. Many of the wait staff has been here each year we return. The eggplant parm also a good choice- sliced thin with the signature Monte's marinara sauce. Service meticulous as always."

  • "This is an adorable west village gem. When you enter the restaurant you feel like you have gone back in time to a better day. The food tastes like grandmas cooking in the kitchen. It's cozy and comfortable . And you know you will always get great food, reliable."

  • "This is one of our favorite little gems when we visit NYC, discovered years ago by a relative. We always have good food, good drinks and good service. They make you feel like family here. Especially love the dessert which starts with a Z...sorry don't remember the name. This is a great little Italian place to visit. Always full so you might want to make a reservation."

  • "Like them and will come back. We had a difficult time getting our bill due to the crowd there on a Monday night however I believe they were just understaffed. Either that or they're trying to put too many tables and too small a space. We lost our coats in the coat room as well but the maître d' sorted everything out in a few minutes. The cooking is great and I was really happy with the night altogether."

  • "I love this restaurant, but they were entirely too crowded the last time we went - a Saturday night. A large number of parties taking up most of the dining room caused confusion and delay. The service was a bit slow. The food however, was still magical. The scallops were amazing, as were my baked clams. The lasagna, however had way too much salt. And it took a long time to get drinks. I've been there many times, so I'm passing any judgment; I just think they were understaffed that night."

  • "My fiancé took me to NYC for our anniversary. We were looking for a reasonably priced romantic dinner and Monte's was perfect! It's a small intimate dining room with romantic lighting and the food was fabulous! The Caesar salad and Tortolloni Monte were delicious and the cheese cake is melt in your mouth!! Will def. go back next time we are in NYC!"

  • "The dinner was excellent. The special salad was very fresh. The service was exceptional and our server was friendly and generous. I would defiantly go back. The prices were reasonable and the food was authentic. As for some of the other reviews posted about portion sizes, they weren't huge but they were enough if you get a salad and a side dish. I will go back to this place."

  • "Good as ever. Step back a half-century into the world of Village Italian restaurants, but with very good food. We have been going here on and off for more than 30-years and will continue to go. Its a treasure."

  • "You're not going to get any surprises in the menu -- just good, old-fashioned Italian classics, made authentically. The stand out of this place is the service. You have a group of lovely older Italian gentlemen that are professional waiters and take pride in their profession. They set the tone for the evning and they're fabulolus, in an efficient, dignified and warm manner. This was my first time and I can't wait to go back - a lovely experience."

  • "This was a little gem we found using our smartphone and they were able to accommodate 8 on short notice. The wait staff were efficient and friendly. The chef came out to check on our dinner. The food was very good and a good value. Menu has a wide array of choices."

  • "We were going to the theater and we were slightly late for our dinner reservation. The staff made sure that we got our dinner and that we were out in time to make the show Minetta Lane The best part was the food was every bit as good as the service if not better. As an added bonus they made off menu items for us. The home made pasta was outstanding and the puttanesca sauce was extremely good and my wife's bolognese was equally good."

  • "Seems to be quite a popular place; it was packed on a Sunday night and there's not much room to move. Tables are close together and not very big. Pasta dishes were satisfying enough but not outstanding; service was decent but not the most efficient."

  • "I have been coming to your restaurant now for over 20 years , and from the first meal then to my latest meal last weekend I have never been disappointed. I live about 65 miles away on Long Island ,So I would not just eat at any restaurant while in the city. The owner has always made us feel welcomed and the staff never fails to give Great suggestions. Montes is that Great place everyone wishes they had closer to home. I have recommended Montes to more people then I can count over the years and I always get the same response , Thank you we loved it !"

  • "Our family met in Manhattan for a Christmas get-together - we came across Monte's and it was our first time at the restaurant - what a treat. Staff was so warm and welcoming; the space was charming (in the basement of an historic Greenwich Village building) and the food was delicious and plentiful. We ordered a variety of appetizers which were all great and everyone loved their entrees, even the five year old! They have zabaglione for dessert so that over fresh strawberries was the finish to a perfect dinner. I guess there is a reason why the restaurant has been there since 1918. Highly recommended."
