Diner Reviews
  • "We went here last weekend for our 45th wedding anniversary. From the moment we were greeted by the host, we were treated very well. We arrived early and went down a floor to their bar area. Great views overlooking the junction of the three rivers from what I think was the 7th floor above Mt. Washington in Southside. Could not have been more stunning. The only negative was the rain but the view was great nonetheless. They have a wonderful selection of fresh fish. We started with the shrimp cocktail, had some delicious fish and then were presented with an incredible dessert in honor of our anniversary. Angel food grilled cheese. Heavenly. Our server, Jane, was great. All in all, I'm sorry we live five hours away or I'd go back ASAP."

  • "I was referred to Monterey Bay by a coworker when I asked for a nice dining experience for a special occasion. I took my girlfriend here to celebrate her birthday and had a fantastic time. Although the atmosphere is business casual, it was not oppressively formal in that the experience was stressful. The waiter was very nice and the manager frequently checked on us to make sure everything was going well. They have a very nice wine list that should encompass any tastes or preferences. The food came out in good time and was presented hot. The appetizer we ordered was Cajun shrimp. It was absolutely delicious! Although there are several menu options aside from fish, it is hard to recommend NOT getting fish. The chefs did a phenomenal job."

  • "For having a sulfate allergy the menu was not conducive for someone like me... however the staff and the main chef went out of their way to make sure that I was taking care of and given choices that would be suitable for me. I highly recommend this place to anyone that loves a great view and a romantic night out. Way to go Monterey Bay! You made a life customer out of me!"

  • "My husband and I went for an anniversary dinner before a show. We were a little worried about having enough time, but the service was fast. The food was magnificent! I got the citrus glazed haddock and my husband got the macadamia crusted mahi. Both were light and flavorful. We finished with the angel food grilled cheese, which is a must have! We have already started trying to recreate that! Views of the city were lovely and everyone came over to wish us happy anniversary. Very nice. Well certainly be back!"

  • "We were in town for our Dove Chocolate Discoveries National Convention & went out for a team dinner. We were seated right away at a window table overlooking downtown & fell in love with the view. The food was great, but I did add a little salt and pepper to a few things. I highly recommend the lobster mac, it was fantastic!! I'd even eat that as an entree it was so good (maybe with a salad to start) If I'm ever back in the Burgh, I'll be back to this place. Maybe on a game night to get in on a good view of some fireworks :)"

  • "The view is it's main selling point. You can't beat it. The service is great, very courteous and professional staff. The food itself.....also great! Worth the price, which is not cheap. Typical dinner for 4 can run $300. When in Rome."

  • "Still one of the best places to take out of town guests. Problem is that the food has not kept up with the view. I had snapper and it was over cooked. Wife had the snapper prepared differently and it was fishy. The desert was angel food with strawberries and it was fabulous. Any more the food is hit or miss."

  • "I went to Monterey Bay for the first time with a group of work friends from out of town. Having spent a lot of time living near seaside towns I really didn't expect much from a Pittsburgh seafood restaurant as far as freshness. I was pleasantly surprised! The seafood was very fresh tasting and the variety of fresh fish was amazing. The chef was very creative with the flexibility of the different preparations."

  • "$14 for a Cosmo, $12 for a Manhattan, really? I get better drinks locally for half the price. Your prices have really gone up."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary by dining here, at the top of Mt. Washington overlooking the junction of three rivers in Pittsburgh. The ambience set the perfect mood, and the food will always be remembered, especially the seafood. They have an extensive selection of fresh catches from which to choose; some are pretty exotic. Go on an evening when the Pirates are playing at home, and you might get treated to a wonderful, post-game fireworks display. An unforgettable evening!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dining experience here -- the food was great, the staff was friendly, the view was terrific. What more do you need? This is a place for a fancier night out -- prices are somewhat steep, but worth it."

  • "Most of the food was great, the crab cakes were outstanding. The scallops did taste a little fishy though. We went all out and ended up spending $150"

  • "Amazing food (orange marmalade & horseradish scallops!) , amazing view, attentive and knowledgeable (but not hovering) wait staff. Our entire evening was beyond our expectations. Thank you Monterey Bay Fish Grotto!"

  • "our first time in Pittsburgh what a view both before and during dinner . Ordered a couple of great drinks mine a cherry infused vodka and champagne and wife's a great lemon drop. My wife had a terrific looking French onion soup that although very good was a little on the bland side. I had the crab cake containing almost all crab and delicious . The best I have ever had . Allan our waiter recommended we have parmesan sauced prepfish , mine Chilean sea bass and wife's was Walleye ( lake ) . possibly the most delicious fish ever had perfectly cooked ,very large portions . Excellent wines by the glass . Allan extremely knowledgeable as well as conversational. Thanks to all for a memorable evening that surpassed our expectations."

  • "Very disappointed in the quality of the food. The dishes were bland at best, with the most tasty dish being the date salad as an appetizer. An appetizer of lemon mussels smelled so strongly of fish that it the whole table could smell it (and not in an appetizing way). Having had similar mussel dishes prepared elsewhere (Point Brugge is a great example of an almost identical, but better prepared dish), I'm not sure why their dish smelled and tasted so terribly. The view was lovely and the service was friendly, but not worth the price when there are so many great restaurants in Pittsburgh. If you want to see the view, have a drink at the bar and then dinner elsewhere."

  • "My husband and I went to dinner on Satruday, July 12, 2014. We had not been there before, but that just became my favorite restaurant. OMG! I loved everything I had. I ordered the lobster ceasar sald and crab cakes, they were the best I ever had. My husband also loved his walleye."

  • "We were in town for a wedding, and the night before happened to be our own wedding anniversary! We went here and were not disappointed. Great view of the city, and excellent service to start, and the meal was amazing! My wife got the Sea Bass and I had the Opah...outstanding! I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for special occassions!"

  • "The food is really great and fresh! There isn't a bad seat in the house as your always able to see out some window or another. Very romantic! The service was also great, very nice and knowledgable about the menu. Would come back here again definitely."

  • "Unbelievable view of the Pittsburg skyline- definitely make sure you are there after dark or at dusk to see the city "light up!" Best thing on the menu was the crab cake for an appetizer- best I've ever had! Fried shrimp for main course were good but could have had 2 or 3 more for cost ( only 5). Ala cart menu- side of 3 color potatoes had too much seasoning. Great restaurant for that special occasion! Waitress was very friendly & attentive."

  • "This was the first time for lunch at the Monterey Bay Fish Grotto and it was a special occasion Birthday celebration. The service was spot on and the food was outstanding as always, we even saved room for desert. Killer doesn't even describe the Grilled Cheese sandwich desert, Angel food caked filled with cheese cake filling and grilled like the sandwich, served with ice cream and berries. Sublime!"

  • "I'm a fish lover and this restaurant has the best fish in Pittsburgh. Also it is a great place to bring out of town friends. The food is always good, the view is exceptional and the service is wonderful."

  • "We have been there a number of times over the last 11 years. The view, as always, is great. However, the food was not quite as good as it had been in the past, especially their signature crab cakes. The wine was not sufficiently chilled."

  • "Love this place! Not somewhere I would go every week, simply because it is a little pricey. However, you do get what you pay for. The food is amazing and it's a beautiful view of the city, especially at night! Very romantic spot :)"

  • "We were so lucky to go here. Honestly, we watched a 40 minute, spectacular sunset that made the entire evening. The food was good as well. I had mussels in lemoncello for an appetizer, and I couldn't taste the lemon at all. It was a great idea, wbut it didn't work. Mu husband had a good, basic salad. Then I had halibut in a basil champagne sauce that was outstanding. We shared the angel food cake dessert, after the waiter raved about it. Skip it. The interesting thing about this place is that the food is good, but it's never rarely utterly amazing. Given the location and the cost, it should be."

  • "I brought my guests here who were visiting Pittsburgh for their very first time and what an impression this place made on the group! The staff was great in helping us get a window table which is a must for first time visitors. The manager came by our table throughout the night making sure everything was great. He even took a group pic for us! All the dishes we got were amazing but the best dish of the night was the stuffed scallops. Well done Monterey Bay! Thank you and your team for making the night an enjoyable experience for my out of town friends. We will be back soon!"

  • "Food was excellent. Took forever to get our drink order - the appetizers were gone before the drinks arrived? Also we sat at the back of the restaurant with not much of a view. Two tables were put together to accommodate our party of six, but unfortunately the tables were at two different levels. The two of us that were at the center of the table had an uneven, wobbly eating surface. Bottom line - food was excellent, but the ambiance left a lot to be desired."
