Diner Reviews
  • "I love Montecatini's - great food, great price, a Calamari steak to die for!!!!!! Keep it up."

  • "Waiter was slow and not attentive. Dinner was at 6:30 PM before the theater; we will not return as there are many restaurants in the area (downtown Walnut Creek)."

  • "Went on a recent Saturday night to Montecatini because we were going to the Lesher and didn't want to park twice. We were regulars a long time ago but somehow it had dropped off our list. Well we will be back often! the food could not have been better and the service was fabulous. Our food came out piping hot on a timely basis and everyone enjoyed their meals. We had the seafood pasta, and sole special with lemon piccata sauce. Yum. Couldn't be more impressed and the price is right too for downtown Walnut Creek. Can't go wrong here."

  • "All four of us loved our dinners and would definitely return. Our only complaint was the noise level. The restaurant, when full, becomes so loud it is almost impossible to carry on a conversation around a table for 4. But the food is great and the prices are reasonable for the quality/quantity. We just wish they could do something about the noise level."

  • "Our favorite for Italian. Low key and can be on the loud side during peak hours, but happily so."

  • "Dined here on a Saturday night and should have taken the feedback on the noise level more seriously. At a table for two and unable to converse across the table without raising our voices. Yes, it is really that loud! Actually intolerable, and takes away from the entire dining experience here. Unfortunate as the entries were very good and the food was served hot; immediately from stove to table. Bread served at room temperature, so warming wood improve it. Service was very good as well. However, will not return until they invest in some partitions, drop and insulate the ceiling or do whatever a good contractor would suggest."

  • "Food was very good; we both had specials of the day and, while being fairly "traditional" in style, they were prepared very well. Menu was large and varied and looked interesting, as did the wine list. Service was friendly and prompt. The restaurant itself is pretty basic, with a bar on one side. Other reviewers have commented on the noise, and it is quite loud."

  • "We have been eating at Montecatini Restaurant practically since it opened in 1990. It features delicious, unpretentious Italian food. It's gnocchi is one of the best in the bay area comparable to Firenze By Night in the city. Fabulous Bolognese style lasagna and a brick pressed chicken that has no peer anywhere. Service is always friendly and helpful. I am always amazed at the wonderful food that comes out of the tiny kitchen."

  • "I have been going to Montecatini's for years and the food is always consitantly good. Everything tastes and is homemade. Great spot before the theatre."

  • "My husband, daughter and I love Montecatini because it is a neighborhood gem and the food is SO good. It is Noisy when full so don't bring anyone with hearing issues. We all had the Caesar salad. I ordered the scallops which I had once before and loved. They, again, were so tender and flavorful in an incredible sauce. My husband and daughter ordered the pasta with shrimp, scallops, etc. They loved their dish as well. We always have a fabulous dinner at Montecatini. Go!"

  • "Came here on a friday evening for dinner with a friend. Pretty small and cozy atmosphere, was quite loud and was shouting most of the meal. Bread and water arrived quickly - we brought our own bottle of wine. $15 corkage fee is a little steep but not surprising. Ordered the pasta primavera w/ alfredo sauce, veal raviolis, and the tiramisu. All of the food was good, although I wouldn't call it memorable. Bread was served room temp. Brought us a 2nd basket of bread after we finished the first. Total cost after tax and tip was about $80. Will I go again? Probably not."

  • "We always love going to Montacatini. Kip, the owner is warm and welcoming and our server, Juan, was very attentive. I had the Veal Marsala which was wonderful and my wife had the Scampi which was enough for two meals."

  • "The food and service were exemplary, but the noise level made conversation somewhat difficult - even at a table for two."

  • "This place is a standard. Has been for many years. Reasonably priced & great food. They specialize in seafood, but everything is great. Try the Sepa Dore (Squid steak prepared abalone style) lightly breaded and pan fried, served with a lemon, butter and wine sauce that will knock your socks off. The scallops are always prepared just right. Downsides... It's very busy and full. There are no divides to break up the space, so it can be a bit loud. It's also very dark. I feel that they need to light it better or put candles on the tables. I imagine the excessively dim lighting is to compensate for the large but tightly packed space. Don't let the downsides stop you as the upsides far outweigh them. Whoever you bring will like your choice."

  • "Growing up in this area I have many memories of large family gatherings at Montecatini's and all of them are of great food and service. I can count on this restaurant to offer delicious food, and friendly service. It is one of my date night favorites as well as immediate and extended family gathering spots. I do always make a reservation though, just to be on the safe side. Dont' just the book by the cover (or the restaurant by the outside) I wouldn't ever want them to update the outside, I want this restaurant to stay the hidden local gem that it has always been!"

  • "Cute Italian restaurant. Hometown feel and good traditional Italian menu Loved the brick chicken and ravioli Cute relaxed bar and great cannoli Salads need some work and they need better appetizers They ran out of there lasagna early evening which is surprising for a Sunday evening I will go back to try it Have to be an early bird to try it."

  • "I hadn't been to this restaurant for quite a while and had forgotton about the noise level. We were there on a Friday night prior to going to the theator. We had the scallops which were excellent. The noise level was awful. Much as we liked the food, my friend and I probably will not return because of the noise level."

  • "Six of us dined at Montecatini before a theatre performance. The food was excellent all around. Three of us ordered the Swordfish and it was tender, tasty and the sauce was absolutely delicious, flavorful but not heavy. We shared a tiramisu and of course we should have gotten at least two it was so good. Even getting down to small details...we ordered cappuccinos and the foam lasted until the end of the drink (we were trying to figure out how it was so foamy yet sturdy)....."

  • "Montecatini is a favorite of ours. We drove 7 hours to dine there on Valentine's Day, but alas! they had a separate menu for that evening that did not include our favorites. This forced us to choose from the special menu and we were delighted to find the same quality and taste as in our favorite dishes (lasagna and gnocchi). We returned the following night to have our favorites and had another great dinner. Chef Aramis has a magnificent hand with the pastas and their sauces."

  • "We went on Valentine's Day with another couple. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals! Each of us ordered something different and every plate was raved about. Service was great even though it was super busy. The only cons that are notable for us are the parking situation and perhaps the outdated decor which could actually add to some of it's charm. We will be returning!"

  • "Every time we have ever gone out other places on Valentines day we had bad experiences. so we thought we would try you. We were't expecting much because it was a crazy night , but what we got was dinner that came out perfect timing DELICIOUS.. and hot to boot! We will highly recommend you for anyone in the area. I just wish you were a bit bigger, but there isn't anything you can do about that so I give you a 10 out of 10* Oh and our service was EXCEPTIONAL! I forgot his name.. darn! But young and vibrant and very knowledgeable."

  • "The service was good, friendly and fast (but not too fast that you feel rushed). The calamari was unbelievably good and reminded me of when I lived in Italy as a child. My husband's linguini with clams was also very good and I know he will order it again and again. Overall it was a romantic night with the food as the star."

  • "Excellent food-the canneloni was delicious with some of the best meat sauce I've had. A little noisy early on, but once people started leaving, it was much quieter. Good service. The water glasses were kept full and dinner came out warm."

  • "This is our favorite Italian restaurant in the entire Bay Area. Always consistent! Food is fabulous, portions are generous and always, always hot when served. We like to sit at the bar but table dining is just as good. Don't ever change anything!"

  • "There were four of us in our party. It was a Tuesday, so there were few customers in the restaurant. We were seated immediately and our personal wine opened immediately as we requested. My girlfriend and I ordered salmon but unfortunately there was only one order available. She ordered the scallops and it was very good. My husband had the veal piccata and said it was the best piece of veal he had ever had. My friend's husband ordered a fish stew and said it was very good. The dishes were extremely large. No one could finish their dinner. Good food, quiet enough so you could hear someone on the opposite side of your table without yelling. Yes, we will return."

  • "Montecatini is the closest we have found to a restaurant that reminds us of the trattorias we dined in in Italy. Great food and service-it can be noisy and the ambience is ok. The fettuccine alfredo and eggplant parmesan are outstanding. Any of their fish specials are also great. The bar is small but vibrant and they do have one TV in the bar."

  • "While not that impressive from the outside, inside was warm and inviting. Waiters friendly and attentive with quick service when needed. My calamari steak was one of the best I've had."

  • "Went there for a quick meal prior to going to the Lesher Theatre for a comedy show. Service was fast and friendly. Food was good but not spectacular. One bone of contention: the bill comes to the table as a hand written ticket. No addition tape to check the totals. No easy way to verify what was billed for and how much. No computer generated tally at all. Very strange in this day and age."

  • "I went to dinner at 9:00 on New Years Eve with my Boyfriend. Since I booked a reservation, I think the waiter really appreciated that we made a reservation (apparently many did not book in advance), so he gave us "the best seat in the house." We had a corner table, so it was not loud, we were not in the middle of the hustle and bustle, and yet we got a feeling of all the energy in the room. The experience was both romantic and special. We split the calamari salad, I had a very smooth pinot noir, recommended by the chef, he had iced tea. I ordered, as my entree a seafood dish within a puff pastry, it was amazing! He had the seafood linguini, also equally amazing. If we had room we would have ordered dessert. Thank you Montecatini!"
