Diner Reviews
  • "This outstanding restaurant has been a favorite of ours since 1991. How many restaurants can stand up to that type of scrutiny."

  • "Its a little outdated in the restuarant but clean! The food was good but the service was great!"

  • "Montebello has excellent food and isn't terribly noisy even when it fills up. Had eggplant parmigiana appetizer and scallopini for main course. The portions were big. Service was fast, attentive, friendly, and outstanding. Based on reactions of my dining companions, I would say stick to the classic Italian fare and you can't go wrong. They aren't too stingy with the wine, either. Recommended!"

  • "This remains one of the sweet spots for Italian in midtown."

  • "Very good, traditional Italian food served in a calm, civilized setting with very good service. Quiet enough for a conversation. Prices are a bit high, but the price fixed menu is a good deal."

  • "a nice old fashioned italian mid town restaurant, but not deserving of high prices unless they have to pay astonomical rent which is probalby why a lunch arugula salad cost $28!"

  • "We dined with 22 family members on the evening of our wedding, and the restaurant was kind enough to put us in a private dining room. The prix fixe menu offered delicious options, and we received multiple compliments on our choice of restaurant. All of our wedding planning was done from another state based on online reviews, and we are so pleased that we found Montebello!"

  • "The food was very good, the only downfall to the ambiance was that we were seated by the bar and the tv was on...the noise of the tv overpowered the beautiful music playing."

  • "Attractive, relaxing atmosphere and decor, wonderful service, delicious food, and a nice surprise -- was able to see a celebrity! Would definitely dine here again."

  • "Staff are friendly and efficient. We didn't have to wait for the table. Food was brought on time. Pear salad was fresh and good and the special pasta made with spinach and grilled chicken was very tasty."

  • "Was focused on solid food/service, with quiet ambience for good conversation. Perfect place. Service was spot on - not overly intrusive, but attentive."

  • "My husband had the chicken which was very tasty. My Salmon was ok. The wait staff seemed not interested in serving us and we had to ask for things several time. This was a first for us in New York where the wait staff is usually excellent. "

  • "There were four of us in our party and we had to different fish dinners and a pasta dish. The pasta with seafood was good. The fillet of sole was poor and the Branzino was okay. Overall we were disappointed."

  • "First time dining at Montebello, we were treated like family, the food, service, and ambiance were outstanding ! It made for a very special evening ! Definitely will be back !"

  • "Was her for dinner during last weekend, staff is not friendly and try to sell there specials instead of normal menu. Food was ok, but average quality and portion for the bucks you pay. Pasta of 25$ should taste better. First time and last time, moving on"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for a while and it is always a steady find, one where the food is consistent."

  • "Montebello is hidden away on East 56th Street between 3rd and Lex. This unobtrusive but welcoming Italian restaurant is a reliable and well placed destination when you have a vague yen for Italian food, but aren't sure where to go. It's a bit of a throwback, but in many ways, that's a plus."

  • "First time dining in this restaurant. While we had walked by multiple times, never had considered a visit until found it on restaurant week listing. Upon entering, found a pleasant ambience with friendly staff. The quality of the meals exceeded our expectations, delicious food, nice presentation, ample portions. Recommended."

  • "Took my coworker out for her retirement as always this place is the best good food good service wouldn't think of going anywhere else."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "Disappointing: Wine-by-the-Glass should be listed in the Wine List, not have to be recited by the waiter. The background music was dreadful -- one classy appropriate piece followed by a raucous, IN-appropriate selection. Whoever is in charge of selecting the music knows NOTHING about Great Restaurant Background Music! $24 is outrageous for a Classic Caesar Salad for Two, when the total was little more than a portion for ONE."

  • "Went for Valentine's Day dinner and the prix fixe menu was great--all of the food was tasty, brought out at reasonable intervals, and reasonably priced. Decor inside the restaurant gives it a luxurious, old-world Italian feel. Most outstanding was the service--everyone was extremely polite, attentive, and accommodating. Would definitely go here again for another special occasion."

  • "I went to this restaurant for the first time with my girlfriend on Valentine's day. Neither one of us took a liking to the limited selections on the menu. There was a choice of 3 different appetizers (1) fresh mozarella, 2) a mix of scallops, shrimp and salmon and I can't remember the last choice). We did not like any of these choices but tried the salmon (minus the scallops and shrimp) anyway. The salmon was too salty so we didn't enjoy it. My girlfriend enjoyed the salad and entree. I didn't enjoy the entree (I had the chicken but it had a cream sauce that I didn't like). We both had the chocolate mousse cake that we once again did not like. I believe we would have enjoyed it if we didn't go on Valentine's day with the limited menu."

  • "I had a business dinner with colleagues and the food was outstanding, based on everyone's feedback. I had the special of a Chilean sea bass and it was superb. The spaghetti bolognese was the best I've had, even though I had to have a penne gluten free pasta. Everyone enjoyed their meal. It has a warm and cozy feel to it, without a lot of formality. The food was the best I had while in NY for three nights."

  • "Quiet ambience and friendly service. Enjoyed our meal, especially rack of lamb. Surprised that there was no selection of wines by glass aside from a red and a white table wine."

  • "This place truly is a neighborhood gem. Everyone at our table enjoyed the food. Tasty and beautifully presented. Veal roast and scallopini were standouts. Service was attentive. The room has well-spaced tables, soft music, and is conducive to conversation."
