Diner Reviews
  • "Was her for dinner during last weekend, staff is not friendly and try to sell there specials instead of normal menu. Food was ok, but average quality and portion for the bucks you pay. Pasta of 25$ should taste better. First time and last time, moving on"

  • "I have been going to this restaurant for a while and it is always a steady find, one where the food is consistent."

  • "We came due to an inclusion in Restaurant Week. In a neighborhood full of over-priced gimics, this is great food and service. We will return."

  • "Montebello is hidden away on East 56th Street between 3rd and Lex. This unobtrusive but welcoming Italian restaurant is a reliable and well placed destination when you have a vague yen for Italian food, but aren't sure where to go. It's a bit of a throwback, but in many ways, that's a plus."

  • "The food at this location was just okay. My cesear salad and merlot was the best part of the entire meal."

  • "Love the chef, love the food, love the servers. Not one complaint and thankful that they moved our table in to the main dining area. Cannot wait to return."

  • "First time dining in this restaurant. While we had walked by multiple times, never had considered a visit until found it on restaurant week listing. Upon entering, found a pleasant ambience with friendly staff. The quality of the meals exceeded our expectations, delicious food, nice presentation, ample portions. Recommended."

  • "Great seafood bisque, not too creamy. Loved the branzino."

  • "Took my coworker out for her retirement as always this place is the best good food good service wouldn't think of going anywhere else."

  • "Disappointing: Wine-by-the-Glass should be listed in the Wine List, not have to be recited by the waiter. The background music was dreadful -- one classy appropriate piece followed by a raucous, IN-appropriate selection. Whoever is in charge of selecting the music knows NOTHING about Great Restaurant Background Music! $24 is outrageous for a Classic Caesar Salad for Two, when the total was little more than a portion for ONE."

  • "I went to this restaurant for the first time with my girlfriend on Valentine's day. Neither one of us took a liking to the limited selections on the menu. There was a choice of 3 different appetizers (1) fresh mozarella, 2) a mix of scallops, shrimp and salmon and I can't remember the last choice). We did not like any of these choices but tried the salmon (minus the scallops and shrimp) anyway. The salmon was too salty so we didn't enjoy it. My girlfriend enjoyed the salad and entree. I didn't enjoy the entree (I had the chicken but it had a cream sauce that I didn't like). We both had the chocolate mousse cake that we once again did not like. I believe we would have enjoyed it if we didn't go on Valentine's day with the limited menu."

  • "Went for Valentine's Day dinner and the prix fixe menu was great--all of the food was tasty, brought out at reasonable intervals, and reasonably priced. Decor inside the restaurant gives it a luxurious, old-world Italian feel. Most outstanding was the service--everyone was extremely polite, attentive, and accommodating. Would definitely go here again for another special occasion."

  • "Chose this restaurant based on location and prior reviews. I was not disappointed. The food was good (although a bit pricey), and the wait staff attentive."

  • "I had a business dinner with colleagues and the food was outstanding, based on everyone's feedback. I had the special of a Chilean sea bass and it was superb. The spaghetti bolognese was the best I've had, even though I had to have a penne gluten free pasta. Everyone enjoyed their meal. It has a warm and cozy feel to it, without a lot of formality. The food was the best I had while in NY for three nights."

  • "Quiet ambience and friendly service. Enjoyed our meal, especially rack of lamb. Surprised that there was no selection of wines by glass aside from a red and a white table wine."

  • "Have been here many times and have always enjoyed the experience."

  • "Welcoming, great service. moderately expensive. Hard to find a lovely location in midtown halfway between east and west that is this good. The Italian food was excellent and the servers made us feel special. We loved this place and have told our friends."

  • "This place truly is a neighborhood gem. Everyone at our table enjoyed the food. Tasty and beautifully presented. Veal roast and scallopini were standouts. Service was attentive. The room has well-spaced tables, soft music, and is conducive to conversation."

  • "The service was warm and efficient. Considering this was Christmas Eve, we were not sure how enthusiastic the staff would be working that evening. A very pleasant surprise. All of our dishes were perfect the first time. The wine recommendation was also very good. I'll return on my next New York trip to see if I was not just wishing things to be perfect for the holiday.a"

  • "The prix fixe lunch was a very good deal. The service is a bit brusque, a la a common Italian-American style. Perhaps when the service realized that a big spender was not eating lunch, "move it along" seemed to be in the theme. Yet the food in the three course meal, + wine, was very good and the price good. Would I recommend this place, probably, but only to people who were not overly sensitive to the service ambience."

  • "We enjoyed the carpaccio and two pasta entrees that we had and thought they were fairly priced. I also enjoyed my wine, but I would prefer a wine by the glass list rather than a choice of chianti, pinot noire, etc. The desserts were also good, cannolis and I had just a dish of berries, although I would prefer to see a list with prices, as i thought the desserts at $11 were overpriced, especially for a dish of berries. That being said the food, service, ambience and moderate noise level will keep me coming back."

  • "For those who seek a well prepared Italian meal served with professional style in a very pleasant setting, this is a place for you. I enjoyed an entre that included pasta, and the red sauce that accompanied the food was delicious. Every aspect of the dining experience was handled with care and competence."

  • "This is definitely my go to restaurant when I am in NYC working. It's down the block from my job and it was a great find. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. Everything is fabulous about this place. The prefix menu L-$28 D-$38 can't be beat. I just love love love Montebello's."

  • "Montebello was able to seat us right away in a lovely booth. The tables are well spread apart to enable conversation. The waitstaff was lovely and there are many delicious items to choose from. If in the area, it is a comfortable, neighborhood place to pop in for a good dinner."

  • "Attentive but not over bearing wait staff. Food was really good but price could make it a reason not to go back. .. full dinner for four plus wine was over 500"

  • "First time at this find for me. The Client I brought for lunch has been going for years. I was very impressed over the food & service. I will be back."

  • "We picked Montebello for a family dinner that was going to put service and quality of the food ahead of pricing. The menu offered a wide range of options and all of the courses were well prepared with great flavor and appropriate portions. The service was well above bar and the waiter very knowledgeable about he was serving. One of our party was my 92 year-old grandfather, and we found the noise levels and acoustics more than manageable. For three courses and alcohol for four guests we spent roughly $100 per person after tip, which seemed fair. Would definitely go again."
