  • "This was my first visit to this restaurant. I met two friends for an early dinner on a Friday night. My warm roasted brussel sprout salad was excellent and the gnocchi was very tasty but a little heavy on the texture. Very friendly wait staff and an overall fun evening. Will definitely return."

  • "Great brunch selections including various types of Eggs Benedict. I chose filet mignon Benedict, my friend chose lobster cake Benedict and my other friend had grilled salmon with eggs. All served with great breakfast potatoes and fruit. Service was very attentive and friendly but they gave us lots of space to have a leisurely brunch. For dessert we tried tiramisu which was very unique and absolutely delicious, and coconut panna cotta that was light and perfectly set off by a mango sauce. We would definitely go back."

  • "We've been here several times since it's in the neighborhood. The service is really good; the food has been subpar. For one of our recent entrees, the shrimp was so undercooked it was in edible. It was taken off the bill, but otherwise we received no real acknowledgement of the problem from either the manager or the chef."

  • "Not sure what is happening at the Bistro. We've eaten there many times over the years. The menu has more main dishes which can be problematic. The server failed to alert us about the abundant share- ability of the "abalone" appetizer. We've had abalone , not sure what ersatz meat that was, but it wasn't as billed. Biggest hint was the price-as the amount would have cost a fortune and it was moderately priced . All downhill from there, except the salad special with grapes nuts from Cal. My wife's pork had pure globs of fat on her plate, I had sand dabs overly smothered in a heavy gravy. Couldn't finish those plates"

  • "...both good and not so good moments were had on this visit. We took my mother for birthday dinner with our new born baby. They were accommodating with the seating and very pleasant. It took them an extended period of time to take our order and check on us during the evening. I had to get up three times to locate a service person. The meals were mostly good, but some items left a bit to be desired, in particular the super hard bread pudding. It averaged out to a decent meal in a really nice setting. All in all, the staff was kind, but not terribly attentive (and it wasn't busy) and the food was slightly above average over all. I think it's worth a go because it's not too pricey, but just don't have high expectations."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Montclair Bistro on Tuesday Special Steak and Fish Nite. Two of us had the t-bone steaks, which were adequarely sized and cooked just right. My wife had the salmon-halibut special. Wine was great. Chef Henri came out and did speak to a patron or two. But once again, he slighted our table. Whether intentional or not, if he speaks with one patron, he needs to speak to us all."

  • "The service was really disappointing. We made a point to make an effort with our waitress, Melissa, but it clearly didn't matter. The occasion was for my boyfriend's birthday, and the restaurant was not slammed when we were there, we thought maybe she was new, but the experience was overall a bad one. She forgot drinks, sides, then she didn't come back for a long time. We ended up asking a a different waitress and a busser for additional items and the check. They were helpful."

  • "Loved the salad, loved the champagne pumpkin soup. Well done on those. We loved the specialty cocktails. Wine recommendations were excellent. Had surf and turf. Something was off about the filet. Perhaps the sauce? The char on the steak? I don't know, but I would not order it again. My husband loved his lamb shank, however. The service was attentive and well-paced. All in all, we will be back. A good special occasion dinner -- I am perhaps too picky."

  • "Everytime we go to the Montclair Bistro I'm reminded how good it is! The service was stellar, the bread was great as I expect in this area and everything we ordered was excellent and properly prepared. I do wish they had a little larger selection of entrees. The same goes for their wine by the glass selection which is pretty slim and I specifically wish they had a rose selection (not sparkling)."

  • "My companion and I were quite pleased with the food: it was very tasty and nicely presented. The hosts and ambience were very nice. I need to couch my opinions on the fact that the occasion was St. Valentine's Day, and I was seriously distracted by my lovely date. Since it was a special day, the restaurant had specific seatings, so the time pressure on the wait staff and kitchen was greater than one might expect on an ordinary day. We intentionally shared our dishes (filet mignon and lamb shank entrees, salads and desserts) as neither of us had dined here before, but suffice it to say that we enjoyed the Montclair Bistro enough to plan on returning soon. BTW, there is a small bar in which to relax a bit if there is a wait to be seated."

  • "I love the food at the Bistro and would recommend it to anyone Small menu but nice choices The main room is designed very nicely and is cosy and has romantic feel We went on Valentines day this time so they had a set menu We were sat in the Garden Room which I wasnt aware of and wasnt as nice as the main room and they hadnt made us aware of that which I didnt like It was kind of busy so the service lagged a little although the server was nice I work in the industry so it was obvious that putting on a three course meal can be difficult so I felt a little sympathy for the server overall it didnt detract too much from my experience Would still go back and suggest to others"

  • "The wait staff was awful. When my twins and I arrived, we were greeted by the most unfriendly and rude person you can find. Before my kids and I were even seated, they cleared off all the serving plates and utensil with the exception for one (mine). When the bread came, I had to ask the waitress for plates for my kids. I guess she expected them to eat off the table. When their pasta came, I had to ask again for forks for them because she wanted them to eat off of the table with their fingers. My children were treated like animals, like they didn't count in this place. I was extremely offended. They didn't even give them napkins throughout the entire dinner. Worse experience ever. Will never return! If I can give it a -5, I will."

  • "I decided to give the restaurant another try. This is totally a different experience from the first time. The waiter was super nice and even gave my kids crayon to draw without me requesting for them. He was super attentive to both me and my kids. He put water in the tall glasses at the table for all three of us. The only thing I would change on the menu is to offer more vegetarian options. Overall, it was a very pleasant and happy experience for both my kids and I. We will definitely come back."

  • "This was the first time I have ever been here. I always wanted to try it so decided to try the restaurant with my sister and 19 month old twins. The waiter was rude and ignored us most of the night. We were ready to order our dinner (and told him so) and he just kept walking away. The food was decent but I would have preferred more vegetarian choices. The kids were well behaved. They weren't screaming or crying and we were trying to order and eat before they got restless in the high chair. We had to wait ten minutes for the check to arrive and was waiting again for him to come back in pick up the credit card to charge it. All this waiting was just annoying so I just put down cash and left. I hope my next experience will be better."

  • "Food is delicious and good enough to motivate me to drive a half hour for dinner. Had the special Hawaiian cod dish for dinner. Had never heard of Hawaiian cod so asked what kind of fish it was and was it really from Hawaii. Turns out it was cod cooked with a Hawaiian motif...a ti leaf under the food. Nevertheless was delicious and a nice serving size. Server was friendly though he seemed a bit busy and it took a while for dishes to appear. Still was a pleasant dining experience and a restaurant that I would go back to."

  • "I find Montclair bistro pleasant and well run, The food on the other hand is totally average. I ordered black cod with a nut crust and there was so much sauce that what should have been a crispy exterior was soft with no firmness. The so called mashed potatoes that came with the fish were 1/2 mashed and dry and the rest of the potato was a big chunk which was way under-cooked If I weren't so hungry I would have sent it back but didn't want to wait for it to return."

  • "The restaurant during brunch was not very busy at all. Only 2 other parties besides us but we were completely ignored. We had to get up 3-4 times to get the waiter to serve us water, bring us ketchup, and to get the bill. Of course, we had a clear line of sight of the waitstaff hanging around the bar, but short of dancing naked, they couldn't seem to notice us when we waved or called for service."

  • "You go to this restaurant when you want to be on the safe side because you are not sure of your guests tastes. So uncomplicated and simple food is what is in order here...but....They need to step up their kitchen...the potatoes anna a signiture dish... were gloppy and tasted like last weeks left overs....and did they look at the presentation before they served???? I had the sole...again, presentation of a simple delicate fish...was poor...covered in a non-descript sause that added nothing to the dish...If your food is going to mediocre at least work on presentation. Oakland now has a ton of fabulous restaurants...shake up that kitchen or you're going down because it should be a wonderful place to go especially for the Montclair townies...."

  • "Three of our four shared multiple dishes- the best way to have a wide array of tastes. All were excellent. The amuse bouche of a cherry chicken broth was fantastic. We would gladly have ordered bowls of it for dinner. Leisurely (not slow) service and a very quiet night made for a very pleasant evening."
