Sadly the chef/owner is selling his restaurant shortly. We can only hope and pray that the new owners can match the wonderful cuisine, ambiance, and service that the Montclair Bistro has given its patrons for the past 10 years.

Food is consistently good. Especially the Brussels sprouts. A little bit short of help on the night we were there. Little details such as keeping track of wine levels in glasses, not knowing what entrees go to whom. Otherwise, I am going to miss this great little neighborhood restaurant.

We went there on a spur of the moment date night. We got there about half an hour before our friends, so my wife and I enjoyed a delicious bottle of wine and a few appetizers. All of our dinners were amazingly good and the special soufflé was such a treat. This is such a great place and I look forward to our next meal there. IF you go there, park in the restaurant lot, it is cheaper than the garage. A fair warning about the city of Montclair, ever square inch of parking in the city requires pay and they will ticket you in a heart beat.

Each time we go to Montclair Bistro we ask ourselves why we don't go there more often. With a vibrant dining scene in Oakland we are often looking for the next great dining spot and yet there is Henry with such consistently great food just a short drive away. One of the things I particularly appreciate is that many of his entrees come with a small plate option. This allows me to have a cup of soup and an entree. Thank's Henry.

Terrible lobster dinners -- hers was flavorless, mine was mushy and filled with a black tarry substance that the chef tried to tell me was normal tomalley (it was not). Wouldn't accept the coupon they sent for the lobster "special" because it was too cheap -- I agree, too cheap. We've had good meals there in the past, but this was way sub-par.

What happened to this restaurant? We dine here regularly and this meal was a disaster, start to finish. The drink order was incorrect. The pasta undercooked and clumped together like styrofoam; we sent it back and it returned to the table worse! One entree sauce was too sour, the other tasted like beef stock from a can. The chef came over and when we began to comment about our food and experience, he abruptly grabbed both plates and said we wouldn't be charged. He didn't listen, didn't seem to care and didn't explain or apologize. We asked for the check and left and we will not return again. As an aside, the service staff was, and always is, very professional.

A neighbor and I enjoyed dinner at the Bistro. What a lovely experience. The waitstaff were attentive, prompt, and courteous. There was no sense of hurry. The presentation of the food superb, including the soup, which was poured at the table from ceramic tea pots. Getting down to the food itself, what more can I say? Perfectly seasoned steak, prepared to an exacting doneness. My friend's sand dabs were delicately flavored and the chef avoided the over/under preparation of cooking. Vegetables, such as sauteed spinach, could not have been cooked more perfectly. I plan on coming back and savoring other dishes. There are just a few restaurants that remain on my favorites list. Montclair Bistro has joined that place of honor.

Montclair Bistro has consistently good food. My friend loved their Tuscan Benedict. Their pancakes were good too. My only slight "issue" is that I wish they had told us that the bacon is Canadian. Not a fan. I like real bacon! Service was just right and so was the atmosphere. We will certainly return.

We have a very nice dinner on Mother's Day. We had the fixed price menu and the food was very good. Our table was right next to the door way to the kitchen and so the ambience was not very good. The use of multiple servers was not very effective as the second server kept getting confused as to who was supposed to get which plate.

No advertisement that brunch was a BUFFET which we usually avoid b/c of my daughter's phobia about eating off others' plates/utensils. Food was mediocre at best and EXPENSIVE...they did not assure that the dishes were replenished and a lot of mothers were waiting in the buffet line for more of the half-way decent items. Plates and serving utensils were were not available as needed. We had to constantly ask for more of the "bottomless" mimosas and dirty plates to be removed. They started clearing the food service tables at least 1 1/2 hours before the 2:00 p.m. end of "brunch"! It was like they just wanted your $44/ person and could care less about your holiday experience.

As always, greeted with a smile and hello. and for once we were couple minutes early and had to wait two minutes to be seated. my guest and I were notably greeted by the head waiter (maybe, because we go there for almost every special day) New Years Eve most notable in my book. The visual garnish display was fabulous and of course had to pick at each and everyone, the food was nothing other than expected good and plentiful. As always I start at the carver station for the ham, work my way backward. And don't forget the mouse at the other end of the room. some had to have seconds, but I pride myself in chefs chocolate heaven three times. thank you

Great brunch selections including various types of Eggs Benedict. I chose filet mignon Benedict, my friend chose lobster cake Benedict and my other friend had grilled salmon with eggs. All served with great breakfast potatoes and fruit. Service was very attentive and friendly but they gave us lots of space to have a leisurely brunch. For dessert we tried tiramisu which was very unique and absolutely delicious, and coconut panna cotta that was light and perfectly set off by a mango sauce. We would definitely go back.

We've been here several times since it's in the neighborhood. The service is really good; the food has been subpar. For one of our recent entrees, the shrimp was so undercooked it was in edible. It was taken off the bill, but otherwise we received no real acknowledgement of the problem from either the manager or the chef.

Not sure what is happening at the Bistro. We've eaten there many times over the years. The menu has more main dishes which can be problematic. The server failed to alert us about the abundant share- ability of the "abalone" appetizer. We've had abalone , not sure what ersatz meat that was, but it wasn't as billed. Biggest hint was the price-as the amount would have cost a fortune and it was moderately priced . All downhill from there, except the salad special with grapes nuts from Cal. My wife's pork had pure globs of fat on her plate, I had sand dabs overly smothered in a heavy gravy. Couldn't finish those plates

We had a wonderful dinner at Montclair Bistro on Tuesday Special Steak and Fish Nite. Two of us had the t-bone steaks, which were adequarely sized and cooked just right. My wife had the salmon-halibut special. Wine was great. Chef Henri came out and did speak to a patron or two. But once again, he slighted our table. Whether intentional or not, if he speaks with one patron, he needs to speak to us all.

...both good and not so good moments were had on this visit. We took my mother for birthday dinner with our new born baby. They were accommodating with the seating and very pleasant. It took them an extended period of time to take our order and check on us during the evening. I had to get up three times to locate a service person. The meals were mostly good, but some items left a bit to be desired, in particular the super hard bread pudding. It averaged out to a decent meal in a really nice setting. All in all, the staff was kind, but not terribly attentive (and it wasn't busy) and the food was slightly above average over all. I think it's worth a go because it's not too pricey, but just don't have high expectations.
