A word from Monstera Noodles & Sushi
Monstera is a hip, casual, moderately priced restaurant providing great food, service, ambiance and value. We are more than a typical sushi restaurant--we have included menu items of Noodle Houses and Izakayas (Japanese Pubs of Japan) to offer you a selection of dishes never seen before on the Big Island. Our philosophy is smile in, smile out. We want you to feel welcome with our gracious local-style hospitality and enjoy great food at a great price in this beautiful location. We hope this will be a stopping point for those traveling along the coast or after visiting a nearby beach.

Named after a non-native, mysterious plant found in Hawaii, Monstera offers a wide selection of items, including sizzling platters and drinks in a casual, yet hip, atmosphere. Here, guests can sit in crocodile print booths under soft lighting and listen to familiar tunes or dine alfresco. Monstera is owned and operated by Big Island residents Norio Yamamoto and Wes Monty.

  • "On vacation, decided to try because of the positive reviews. First off, it is Hawaii, so it is fairly expensive. I had their signature dish and The Volcano Tuna and Shrimp rolls. My wife had their Kalbi ribs. My son had chicken fingers. Service was fast. The reason I gave it only 4 stars. The kids chicken fingers were the highly processed type, i.e. Ground Chicken type meat formed in the shape of a mouse. I was expecting non-processed real pieces of chicken breast. Second, the waiter asked if we wanted utensils, we said yes. We didn't get utensils until after our food arrived. The food server went to get them. He only brought forks. My wife sat there attempting to cut the beef with the side of the fork until it was noticed."

  • "Monstera Noodles & Sushi could be a great restaurant, if they hired more waitstaff! it took forever to order our drinks and food, and then our appetizers arrived before our drinks/beers. When we had gotten all our food except one item, i said to our server: "we are just waiting for the CA roll" he replied "yeah, so am i." it was a bit rude. the food itself was delicious, which is why i wish it was better staffed!"

  • "Lots of fresh fish and dishes. Fresh wasabi but you need to ask for it. Nice selection and alternatives for those who do not eat sushi. Full bar but a bit strange. We ordered dirty martinis, Mai tais, and sake. All reasonably priced; however, we could not figure out why we were charged a $2 service charge for the martinis. No explanation on the bill. Each martini was $9. Below each martini was a $2 charge. Maybe it was because we had premium brands? If so, why not charge $11? We didn't read the bill until this morning thus the confusion! Maybe a charge for the olives? Also if you order a martini, just get it on the rocks. It sat in the ice way too long before pouring. "

  • "Took about 40 minutes to be seen by wait staff after we were seated. By that time 3 different people finally came by seeing that we still had menus still on our table. Ordered a Volcano sushi roll as an appetizer that came out AFTER our main plates were delivered. They couldn't even get that right. Food was good basic Asian fare, but terribly overpriced - $19 for udon noodles and pork strips. Sorry.... You lost me and not returning. There are many other restaurants in the area with better food and service."

  • "Great tasty food! We mostly enjoyed the Black Cod and the Tofu Steak. The sushi was outstanding and the Japanese brown rice was exceptional. Highly recommend this restaurant whenever you're in the Mauna Lani Resort area. Next time, we'll try their noodle dishes. "

  • "The owners, Wes and Norio, are fully engaged in the business of providing a wonderful experience for their customer. Norio is out front at the sushi bar and clearly likes what he does. He preps these incredibly beautiful and palate pleasing dishes and still makes the effort and takes the time to notice and acknowledge each customer. Wes, busy in the kitchen, still manages to slip out to say hi and get personal feedback on the great dinners created behind the kitchen doors. My choice of place to take visitors who appreciate great food with Aloha!"

  • "Monstera is one of our favorites on the Big Island. The fish is sustainable, local and fresh and the vegetables are also local. The dishes are creative and beautifully presented. The Tuna Tataki is out of this world. So is the Volcano roll and Rainbow roll. The wine is very reasonably priced. The Original MaiTai is perfect as it is not to sweet - made the traditional way. Delicious! The service is friendly, professional and helpful."

  • "We tried several sushi places on the big island on our honeymoon, and this was one of them. Kitchen was slow and the server was really nice and accommodating, but stretched too thin. The kitchen was kind of slow for how uncrowded the place seemed but it looked like there might have been two chefs back there working for the whole place. Honestly, great effort, but it fell short in the end."

We also received their appetizer in error which as it turned out showed up after their entrees. The sushi was good quality and well prepared."

  • "As a "sushi" snob, I'm very picky when it comes to quality...Monstera selection of and dishes were some of the finest we've ever had. We enjoyed it so much, we dined there two times. Their warm entrees are also superb! Friendly staff, excellent high quality food...What more could you ask for? I would definitely give Monstera a try when visiting the beautiful island of Hawaii!"

  • "Between a commercial fisherman in Alaska and a couple from the Texas gulf coast, we really enjoy fresh fish. This has been the best dining experience we have had on the island. We tried the poke at every restaurant we went to on the island, and we all agreed this was the best! The staff was very kind, and we had very fast service. We tried a variety of foods, and the only thing we would change was the fried poke on the poke three ways plate. We all liked it, but agreed it was a waste of a perfect fish to fry it. Kayla was the best waitress. She really made our dining experience great. Thank you!"

Clearly the BEST and most delicious sushi I've ever had. The Tuna Tataki is a signature dish that is--hands down--the best appetizer I have ever had. A wonderful wine list which included one of my favorites, Elk Cove Pinot Gris. My yaki-soba was one the best I have ever had! My husband loved his kimchee!   • "not much else to say. This restaurant is upstairs in a shopping center, with outdoor tables having a nice view as the sun sets -- but not of the water, just countryside. The place was hopping at 6 PM and reservations appear to be a must. The service was excellent, and all of the food we had --shared ahi appetizer and chef's choice of sushi -- was excellent. It was a very pleasant evening of dining for us."

I love your green salad but $11.50 for a salad is a little too high and wasn't as big (to share) as I remember the previous week that we were there. That was a disappointment. A few other items went up like the miso soup and edamame but still reasonably priced. I realize we live in Hawaii and the cost of running a business is high but really?"
