Diner Reviews
  • "We've eaten at Monkeypod on 6 occasions in the last year -- always excellent! It is hands-down our favorite restaurant on the island (and we're picky!). Their live music is at least two notches above what you'd expect, but sit outside for the atmosphere and lower noise level to enjoy delightful dinner conversation while on vacation. Wine selection is also surprisingly excellent. Stand-out dishes include: daily fish special, brussel sprouts (which I HATED as a kid but Monkeypod serves them to perfection!), turkey burger, fries and cream pie desserts. Service is marked by a strong sense of teamwork and a happy, engaged crew. Everyone there truly seems to enjoy working for Monkeypod as much as we love eating there!"

  • "Everything here is always done right! They have mastered it all, from the service to the desert! I can't think of any other restaurant that can match the experience. Well done!"

  • "We had a wonderful time at Monkeypod! Great food, great staff, nice atmosphere. We're going again for dinner tonight!"

  • "Really, really good fish sandwich but the actual piece of fish was about the size of a quarter. We are not big eaters but we had to get something to eat later in the evening since we were hungry about an hour after dinner. I think for $20 you could put a little more food on the plate. Also, the music is way too loud inside, but if you sit outside your food is attacked by flies."

  • "We did sit outside on 4/3/14 which offered a nice sunset view and relative quiet compared to the energetic and somewhat loud inside seating. Our waiter seemed distracted and forgot our appetizers. The homemade jalapeño poppers were very tasty and not too spicy. Our waiter then brought the wrong entree twice! The fish tacos were somewhat soggy by the time they came and were otherwise very ordinary. My wife's fish special (monchong) was excellent. The waiter did comp us dessert for his earlier errors but then brought us the wrong dessert! Four mistakes by our server in one night and inconsistent food made for a night to forget."

  • "Don't waist your time eating at the hotels. They are at best 3 star food and service. Monkey Pod is the only place my family wanted to eat at. Incredibal bar and the food was great. Make a reservation."

  • "The only sore spot was our waitress was a little inattentive, and didn't really seem to be patient. She took forever to get us our drinks, and the check."

  • "We spend a holiday week each year in Maui. This is the second year we've eaten at Monkeypod and our group agreed it was our best meal of the week. See you next year I hope."

  • "Great restaurant. Options for kids and adults alike. We went back a second time during our stay. Ate outside as weather was beautiful and inside can be quite noisy. Highly recommend the roasted brussel sprout pizza!"

  • "This is my 3rd meal at Monkeypod and the food was, as always, absolutely outstanding. The wait staff was attentive, helpful and fun. This is a dining experience I look forward to with great anticipation. I have had the best burger, the best fries and some of the best pasta I have ever eaten there. I highly recommend this restaurant to all. One should be aware that this place is LOUD! That will NOT keep me away however. The food is just too good. Your taste buds will thank you and if you go in the evening, you'll get to watch the glorious Maui sunset. Lots of parking. Stairs& elevator make it accessible to all. Kids are welcome there. Indoor and outdoor dining. Food that will delight. Prices are reasonable. Merriman did good with this one."

  • "Having eaten at Merriman's restaurants on Kauai we were prepared for the experience at Monkeypod - a loud and lively atmosphere with 'good enough' food that had a few highlights. The Kale salad was lovely and fresh, the banana cream pie had great flavour and a nice crisp crust. The Thai fish stew was tasty but had little to no heat though advertised as spicy (maybe just us as we do love spice), the fish tacos were good but nothing made them stand out. The quality of the ingredients was high, our server was fantastic (kudos to Alison for excellent service on a very busy night) and there was a great drink special we enjoyed. Overall a nice night but not that special place you're looking for - too noisy and crowded."

  • "We went for dinner with my family and I chose the Monkeypod Kitchen - we are a group of four - with 2 very fussy eaters! We have tried the place each year we are here in Maui - it has a very notable menu and diverse selection that will accommodate most palettes. I tried the dinner special which was the local fish - it was very good. The rest of the family went with the Portuguese bean soup & salads - they thought is was great. We dined outside on the patio and it was nice and quiet out there - they did have a musician playing inside the restaurant - but we like the quieter outdoor setting. If you have not tried the Monkeypod Kitchen - I would recommend you give this place a try for either dinner or lunch. Aloha!!"

  • "Only a couple of negatives: the pumpkin ravioli in sage butter was way over dressed and therefore greasy. the Asian pear salad was a disappointment. HUGE bowl of pretty dry green, with 4 small pieces of pear, a smidgen of nuts and barely findable cheese and dressing. Really awful. The fish and chips, turkey burger, filet mingon, and lobster stew, and mac mahi mahi were EXCELLENT. OUr server was fantastic."

  • "Went for happy hour and early dinner, was surprised by both the level of cooking and the quality of service. Food here was very good, well-made, and the service was amazing--quick without feeling rushed, intuitive almost to the point of creepy (but not quite, just a really, really intelligent server). Overall, a phenomenal experience--these guys are on their game, and know how to put well-made food and drinks on the table in a very short amount of time. Very good cocktails, and a surprisingly decently-curated wine list. My only critique was the live music, which was an amplified guy with a guitar and a mike, who raised the general noise level and which just seemed unnecessary, but apart from that this place was great."

  • "This restaurant missed the mark on many levels. It was insanely loud inside and every dish we ordered (8 in total) was not quite right. We left completely dissatisfied and surprised at how poor the experience was. We would not return."

  • "I could survive island to island eating at Merriman's restaurants. Great food, great drinks, great service. We went back again!"

  • "Very busy place, but pleased to see, we were seated in 5 minutes. Mom and I were seated outside, thankfully because we both can't tolerate the A/C. I had the snapper and Mom had the Mahi Mahi. Both melt in your mouth delicious!!! There was a light must outside but that didn't bother us, we had our very own rainbow! Wait staff very pleasant and doting!"

  • "Disappointing. My meal was very overcooked and a bottle of red wine served warm. The server, Ryan, was the only bright spot of the evening."

  • "My husband and I went with 5 teenagers. We were happy and so were they. There are delicious albeit expensive entrees but there are also burgers and pizza which are more reasonable and everyone was happy. My husband and I agreed that they were the best Mai Tai's on the island."

  • "Unbelievable, mind-blowing, life changing. I wish I lived in Hawaii so I could have those tacos as often as possible."

  • "Appetizer was excellent and whet our appetite but unfortunately the entrees were cold, and one had to be sent back. Ruined the meal. Won't go back."

  • "We enjoyed the food immensely. We had the Caesar Salad and the Cheeseburger with fries. All of the food was locally sourced and very fresh. The only sour note was their version of the Mai Tai. It had a lillikoi foam on top which overpowered the drink and it was very tart. We asked them for something to sweeten it up. They brought pineapple juice which helped. If you were looking for a traditional Mai Tai, this isn't it. Overall it was a great dining experience."

  • "Everyone said try Monkeypod. We did and it was fun experience. The food and drinks were very good. And service was top shelf. Had the chef's special which was outstanding but had a real desire for the flatbread pizza. It looked so good we ordered one to go. It was great cold the next morning."

  • "My wife and I decided to give Monkey Pod Kitchen a try during our trip to Wailea. It was an outstanding experience, and eclipsed our much more expensive dinner at Morimoto. Shay was our server, and she's the best We've come across. Highly recommend!"

  • "I went to Monkeypod last week and ordered a cold beer and the Hamakua Wild Mushroom pizza. The beer was ice cold and the pizza was fantastic - white sauce, truffle oil, mushrooms. I ate the whole thing even after I was full. The jalepeno poppers appetizer was really good with a light breading and a filling of ricotta and probably monterrey jack. I would enjoy Monkeypod again, although I didn't figure on it being as family-oriented and kind of noisy at first. Perhaps it was just the evening dinner rush."

  • "I was excited about visiting this place. Unfortunately the reality didn't live up top the expectation. First there was an issue with my booking, they said they hadn't received the OpenTable booking but I showed the email receipt. My food was good but my wife had fish and chips and quite honestly most of the fries were inedible. They were the burnt bits left in the fryer at night, quite unappetizing. We did not complain, by that time we just wanted to leave and besides, in my book you only one chance to impress. Why let the food go out like this, sloppy quality assurance. Our waiter was in love, well with himself and we were honoured to be in his presence. He did enough to get his tip and once the food was server totally lost interest."
