A word from Monkey Cat
Located in historic downtown Auburn, The Monkey Cat is a popular destination for both locals and visitors who are looking for a fine dining experience. Voted as "The Best Restaurant" in many reader's surveys (Auburn Journal), The Monkey Cat has a special ambience and extensive menu. In 2005, the owner, Jim Bril, came to Auburn from San Francisco where he was the managing partner of the famous Fior D' Italia in North Beach, known as "America's Oldest Italian Restaurant". He quickly made The Monkey Cat into Gold Country's premiere restaurant for fine dining, banquets, business gatherings and special occasions. The lunch and dinner menus offer something for every discerning palate. Discover great appetizers like Monkey Cat Crab Cakes, Shrimp & Lobster Wontons, Stuffed Portobello Mushroom, Prosciuttto Wrapped Chicken Skewers and more! There are many different salads and fabulous entrees including steaks, seafood, poultry and pasta! Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We found this place by a walk by. Used Open Table and got a reservation. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. We had the portobello mushroom appetizer which was excellent. Then a seafood pasta came up that had a Chipotle cream sauce and before we ordered we asked what the waitress thought of the sauce. She asked if we would like to try it before hand, an unusual offering, which we took her up on. Most impressive service and sauce! There were many local wines on the wine list. All in all a great place for an evening meal."

  • "Monkey Cat is a regular on our list of local restaurants. They do a superb job with seafood, especially the seafood pastas they offer on their "specials" list. We love the soup, especially tomato-blue cheese; and their salads are sizeable enough to share. The wine list isn't large, but it is well thought out to accompany their menu. There is a selection of locally made red wines, which is excellent, except that it includes no local whites."

  • "Best of Auburn's fine dining scene! Limited wine list, but those on current list excellent choices. Top notch service---not too much or too little --a balance that is hard to achieve. Highly recommend the pork tenderloin with figs!"

  • "Duck breast and pork tenderloin was very good. Real lumpy mashed potatoes, outstanding. Spring mix salad could use some tomatoes on it."

  • "Celebrated my mother's 86th birthday at the Monkey Cat (her request) for lunch. Many nice lunch choices but she and I selected the day's special (fish fillet). It was a wonderful fillet of sole with a great, flavorable sauce. My mother ate the whole, huge plate of food!!! Had some nice dessert choices and even were entertained with the "Happy Birthday" song and candle. It was a wonderful lunch and she talked about it all afternoon. The service was top notch. Thanks Monkey Cat!"

  • "We were headed to our favorite winery and decided to have lunch on the way; and I suggested Monkey Cat. All four of us enjoyed our lunch and were delighted to see the wine selection had so many local wineries represented. We will be back in the near future and will recommend it to other friends."

  • "We've been here a few times. The food is generally very good, but the owner is...arrogant? Very pushy on the drinks, and my God man, if you are going to put your armpit in my face to clear the table, maybe should wash first. B.O.! The waitstaff is attentive, but we sensed a general overbearing attitude of the owner, towards both the customers and staff. Very strange. Will we go back again...maybe."

  • "Food was excellent!! My only criticism is the noise level - very loud! Could hardly talk across the table."

  • "It took about 20 minutes before a server came to us We were seated next to a very large noisy group, couldn't hear ourselves talk! When we were moved it was to the next booth which wasn't much better It took a very long time to get our check It was my girlfriend'sbirthday so it would have been nice if server came out w/ a birthday dessert & surprised my girlfriend, singing Happy Birthrates"

  • "Normally restaurants transform their menu on Valentine's Day to gain a few extra bucks. We were happy that it felt like a normal night, even though it was Valentine's Day."

  • "It was a great expierence, me and my wife enjoyed the food, Great steak a must to try. The drinks were well fixed, no holding back on the vodka. Thank You so much for a great time. WE WILL BE BACK....."

  • "My wife's Seafood Pasta was excellent, Mussels and Clams tender and overall dish great. My Flat Iron or Skirt Stake was good, meat excellent, green beans too al detente for my taste almost raw. Soup good and house salad just OK. Local wine list great and prices fair, keep that effort up, try some Solune (Grass Valley)? Overall price structure fits for Auburn, unlike some others in Old Town. We will be back."

  • "My husband and I had a very nice dinner at Monkey Cat. We were a bit worried, as several reviews have been negative about the food, but we did not have that experience at all. We were immediately seated, then greeted by Gillian, a bouncy, cheerful and knowledgeable waitress. My husband ordered the seafood special and was very happy with it. I ordered the chinese chicken salad, which was very good. The size of the portions were just right. We split the lemon dessert and enjoyed rich, hot coffee - a must for me. We will be back!"

  • "This is our go to restaurant in Auburn. We've been several times, always feel welcome, friendly excellent service, and just a nice vibe with consistent good food. Have taken several out of town guests there who would agree with these comments."

  • "I loved the server, Shannon! She is always delightful! The ambiance is very good, mysterious, romantic, however, hated the big screen behind our table for the 5 of us......felt confining. It was hard to enjoy the restaurant's environment. BTW, the patio could be fixed up a bit. It doesn't take much. The hamburgers are fabulous here, but I didn't have one that day. Sadly, a few of us sent food back because the chef was heavy handed with the spices......couldn't taste the food itself. I think very spicy should be added to the menu or a key spice added. Some people can't handle the heat or are allergic......or the server could add that when taking the order."

  • "Many restaurants offer limited menu items with inflated prices for special events and holidays. It was exceptionally nice to fine a restaurant that not only offered their normal menu and prices but also accompanied it with excellent service and superb food quality. The Monkey Cat has a very nice selection of items on their menu from a verity of appetizers,to delicious deserts. Not only was the food prepared to perfection but was served in a friendly and timely manner. Even though they did not have the cocktail onions for the Gibson I ordered the replacement martini was great. We will most definitely return to this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal at moderate prices."

  • "Fantastic dinner experience. We ate at the Monkey Cat before attending a New Year's Eve celebration. Our food was absolutely delicious - (the tomato blue cheese soup was to die for), & very nicely presented. We both had the steak filet mignon - it was a sizeable potion & melted in our mouths The restaurant had a mellow, romantic ambience which was appreciated since we knew the rest of the evening would be more boisterous. Nice selection of wine, yummy desserts, & great service from our waitress."

The food is amazing, the service has always been top notch with beautiful kind and lovely servers, and the ambiance is relaxing, fun, and delightful. Very attentive and friendly staff and the owner is there to. Check out there website that gives you an update on the restaurant and the menu and prices. Also, What is a Monkey Cat is explained. Also, you can get a massage next door for $30 per hour to top off the night."

  • "The salmon wasn't very good. It took 50 minutes to get the main course, and we were the first ones there! The chicken cordon bleu was very good. The salads seemed lacking. We had a good time with our party, but the food could have been better."

  • "Originally we were scheduled to be at a Joe Bonamassa concert in Reno; however due to the weather the concert was postponed and our plans were changed. We decided to go out to dinner and ended up at The Monkey Cat. We were very impressed with the food and the service was great. We had the jalapeno poppers for an appetizer and the were hot! In a good way - the kind of heat that makes you want to eat more. We had the flat iron steak - awesome; the rack of lamb - incredible; the pork tenderloin - which was amazing! Oh, and the orange crème Brule! All in all a great nite!"
