A word from Monkey Bar
Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was my second time here, and it was even better than I remembered it. This time was a business meal with 4 associates and every small dish and main dish was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is very old school, in a good way. You feel like you're dining in 1940's New York. I will definitely come back, it's one of my favorite New York restaurants."

  • "A little gem. Delicious food, good service and excellent cocktails. All in all definitely worth a visit."

  • "I felt like I was dining in a beautiful, old world spot; a classic restaurant that has settled in and become a grande dame for dining. Monkey Bar is elegant, yet comfortable. The food was promptly served and was delicious. I especially loved the wall mural. I am a huge Tennessee Williams fan and felt honored to eat near the Ellyssee Hotel, his home for 15 years."

  • "This gem of a venue fits both needs...a drink with friends with enough old world charm mixed with a modern touch, or a dining experience in the restaurant which in itself has the feel of a rich heritage, yet a modern menu, catering for all palates, and service equivalent to the old world kind. This was a great venue and lived up to expectations."

  • "Red leather and high end locals frequent. Food and wait staff better than many NYC restaurants!!"

  • "My last visit to NYC was 29 years ago when this place was recommended to me by a couple of ladies who lived in New York. We had an amazing time then when they had live entertainment. Was surprised to see still open after all this time with good reviews so had to book and hope things would be the same (never a good move). Started off well with nice booth and very efficient staff. Head waiter appeared quite aloof and didn't really want to talk. Starter ok but main course of sirloin on the bone was really tough. I couldn't eat it and when female waiter removed plate told her so. Was offered something else but too late for me now. Didn't have dessert so paid an expensive bill and left."

  • "monkey bar is great for drinks or dinner. the value is much more apparent during restaurant week! but the space is so grandiose, the service impeccable and then dishes quite large, that it's always a pleasure to go!"

  • "We were underwhelmed. We visited during Restaurant Week. The Restaurant Week menu was limited, and the serving sizes were small. My husband left hungry and said he would never go back. It's unfortunate--the restaurant is so pretty and has such potential. This was the only restaurant at which we dined during Restaurant Week that was not filled to the brim. We now know why."

  • "The staff was very friendly and attentive. The monkey theme is fun without being silly. The food was well presented and prepared. This is our second visit and we look forward to our next one."

  • "The Monkey Bat is pretty and quiet. The service is warm and efficient but not intrusive. Food was great. Creative Caesar with kale, perfectly cooked salmon and great veggie sides. Lamb was great with black rice. Nice for a business dinner or a special night out. Good wine list with mixed pricing."

  • "We stayed at the Elysee and booked two dinners at the Monkey Bar. The table was perfect for our romantic dinner. The service was outstanding. The food was beautifully presented and tasted just as wonderful. We will definitely return and will tell our friends about our experience."

  • "We'd been to the Monkey Bar when it re-opened years ago. I was in the neighborhood and looking on Open Table for a place to meet my daughter for dinner. We were both very happily surprised to find a beautiful room, with professional service and good food. After trying many "hot" new restaurants and not being able to hear the person next to you, it made for a relaxing dining experience to sit down, have a great cocktail, lovely food and good conversation. Prices are a bit high, but my 24 year old and I both agreed that it was a place to definitely put on our go-to list"

  • "I'd definitely return to this charming restaurant just off the lobby of the historic Hotel Elysee. Had a wonderful skirt steak for lunch while enjoying the banquette seating and the intriguing mural spanning the wall. While trying to name the Jazz Age personalities that were featured on the mural, the server handed us a beautifully framed replica of the mural with everyone identified. It's not often that the servers in a restaurant are so attuned to the needs of its guests and it is certainly not common for the surroundings in a restaurant to trigger such lively conversation. The atmosphere was casual elegant, the service was quietly attentive, and the food was delicious."

  • "We were thrilled with the murals in both the bar and dining room---they added to the experience. Food was excellent, steak perfectly grilled, soup delicious and dessert great! Planning to go again."

  • "I took a very important client here, in from Korea, a place that knows its beef. He ordered a steak medium rare. It came closer to well done, just barely pink. My partners and I all agreed with him it was overcooked. When he went to send it back, they warned it "could take a while," trying to dissuade him from sending it back. He asked for a NY Strip, smaller, to sped things up, and for it to be medium rare. Guess what? Not. I do give them credit for sending out a cheese course and drinks gratis, but it was embarrassing nevertheless."

  • "Went with three friends for Resturant Week lunch. The service was wonderful and we were not rushed at all. I did notice that others who seemed to be on a lunch hour schedule were not happy about the lack of speedy service, but for us it was a real plus. Two of us did send back our soup which was not hot and it came back hardly better. But the rest of the meal was lovely. Would definitely go back for a special occasion."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by the elegant quiet dining. What a refreshing experience to hear the other guests at your table. The menu was interesting and wait staff were very pleasant. We will certainly return. Two of us had the restaurant week menu and two of us ordered off the regular menu. Everyone was happy with their selection. The portions were good and not overwhelming."

  • "RW lunch. Food and service did not match setting. Servers seemed to be over whelmed and runners did not pick up slack, i.e. offering fresh pepper, cheese, the next table had to ask for hot sauce for shellfish and lemon for salmon! Soup was cup size rather than bowl..first time I've really noticed portion size during RW..and the crispy prosciutto was just hard in the celery root soup. Had to remeind waiter about wine when halfway thru soup..it was then he offered pepper. Pasta was fine , flagged down runner for pepper..and dessert nice. Total experience lacking..did enjoy the room but sad to see the olive stools in bar did not survive re-do!"

  • "Quintessential NY power restaurant and a great place to people watch. I love coming here : certainly not for the food ( mediocre) but the ambiance makes up for it. Service is generally very good."

  • "I have been to the MB many times. Although it gets considerable buzz due to the Graydon Carter connection the food is fairly pedestrian, really basic comfort food. The surroundings and decor go some way towards helping to direct ones attention on other things. The location and ambiance out weigh the food experience and do not believe they pretend otherwise."

  • "Yes, it is expensive and the portions are dainty. But the food, service and ambiance are all excellent. Had lunch during restaurant week and was very pleased. Grilled sweetbreads, wild striped bass and toffee pudding were all delicious. The special wines by the glass were an added treat."

  • "A friend and I enjoyed a Restaurant Week lunch. The menu choices were nice, the food delicious, and the service was excellent. We felt we were treated with respect and deference even though we were there for a 'bargain' lunch. The dining room is beautiful and the atmosphere is very old-school, making the meal a special occasion."

  • "If you like hospital food this is the place to go. While the food is very well cooked, it lacks any seasoning. I am not talking about under-seasoned, I am saying like hospital food. The chef needs to either taste his food before it goes out or you guys need another chef. Ambiance is actually super nice and chic, the cocktails were great albeit super expensive (even for NYC). The highlight of the evening was out waiter (Nate). He was the best thing in this place. Funny, cute, and a great waiter."

  • "great ameri-french bistro-type ambience--get a leather banquette if possible. staff very attentive, and that night's host (christopher) was ultra smooth while ensuring our meal was enjoyed at a proper pace. the food is top-notch--admittedly we went for the restaurant week dinner menu. notable is the 'baby leaves salad' seems understated by name, but the banyuls vinaigrette was really, really good--with 'umami' flavor. the wild striped bass with small roasted cauliflower florets was excellent, and one must have the chocolate toffee pudding for dessert."

  • "I came here for restaurant week for a dinner before a show. On the menu you had a choice of three apps, three entrees. We had the lobster bisque, (it was alright) and the short rib ragu cavatelli (AMAZING), and the Chocolate toffee cake (AMAZING!). Overall a great meal. Drinks were expensive, 10 dollars for beer and cocktails are ~$17-19. I definitely want to come back again for the cavatelli."

  • "we went there during restaurant week. the prix fixe menu had a good selection which I ordered from. my girlfriend ordered from the regular menu. my food portion, the sea bass was about half hers (the halibut). it was was more like an appetizer portion. we did however get a great table."

  • "This was our first time at the Monkey Bar. We are foodies and a graduate of the Culinary Institute. (So a little cred!) We were there for lunch the service impeccable, the staff was friendly and did an excellent job. The food was done to perfection, it also came out hot, plate presentation was well done. The atmosphere was lively but not too noisy, the decor was upscale but fun. We were impressed and will go back very soon."

  • "Fine menu served in small portions, so over-order. As for the legend to the famous murals, they will bring you a small framed repro that tells you who everyone is on the walls. Feels like the 50s in here, in a good way. Still classy as ever."

  • "No fooling around- when it comes to cocktails, service and ambiance I give this place 5 stars! Friday night during Restaurant week, we arrived early and enjoyed the whole experience. Portions were small, but enjoyable. For dessert, I recommend the ice cream or sticky toffee pudding over the beignets (fried but very doughy) Main menu may be pricier than I'd normally pay (unless a special occasion) but I'd definitely go back Cocktails are amazing"

  • "The lunch was excellent- Choice of soup or salad, entre- Roumanian steak, organis sea bass excellent. Dessert- Beignet was a poor example of this famous desert. It was off white in color and had the taste of sugared cardboard. However, the Turkish pudding was delicious."

  • "There were 4 in our party celebrating a birthday. We were delighted with the Restaurant Week menu, but even more pleased with the fact that we found the decor lovely and the noise level quite low. Finally we found a quiet restaurant even though all tables were filled. We shall return."
