A word from Monkey Bar
Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Diner Reviews
  • "The Monkey Bar remains a rare find for ambiance. Nothing commercial about this little gem & a must see for history buffs."

  • "We went for restaurant week. The food was great but small portioned, and we got a bottle of wine! The service was flawless and it was affordable! All in all you can't beat the scene at the Monkey bar. Go mon-thursday"

  • "The food here was delicious and a fun twist on some classics. The wine selection is good. I very much appreciated the decor and the atmosphere of the restaurant as well. It makes you feel as if you were in a different era. The waitstaff were very attentive and professional - I appreciate it!"

  • "Enjoyed the food and ambience. The bar bill was a bit high but the food was excellent. We all ate selections from Restaurant week's menu. The salad was very uninteresting but the gazpacho was terrific as were the main courses."

  • "Iconic New York. The mural is incomparable and worth the visit. Bar is fun and lively albeit a bit loud."

  • "It is about an elegant and refined restaurant where you can eat really really well, we had a salmon Carpaccio, a crab cake, some agnolotti, the chicken, a chocolate mousse, a cheese cake. Everything was great, exept of the cheese cake that was second rate compared to the whole dinner that was very delicious. The servise is good, I appreciated everything"

  • "We went for Restaurant week and the food and service was really good, the portions were really small, but I guess that's what they do during restaurant week. I recommend the Lemon Miso Panacota for desert, it was DELICIOUS!!!!"

  • "Too many French fries on plate ,heaped up and falling off plate, very unelegant presentation."

  • "This is a very cool and hip restaurant that has a vibrant bar scene as you walk in the door. The ambience is cozy yet fun and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend."

  • "This is a New York gem! I honestly enjoyed the ambience and service more than I enjoyed the food. If you are looking for a classic New York spot, look no further. This spot has an amazing New York themed mural by Ed Sorrell depicting Hollywood celebrities such as Fred Estaire, Babe Ruth, etc. The servers are charming and really know how to cater to their guests. The food was good, but nothing over the top or impressive. The gazpacho was supposed to have shrimp and avocado in it, and I found a tiny little piece of both at the bottom which was disappointing. I would definitely come back for a cozy night during the winter. Fantastic drinks as well!"

  • "Went to Monkey Bar as part of Restaurant week and ambiance was great. I dont usually go this fancy, but figured it was a nice occasion, as we were spending time with some out of towners. Not a place for vegetarians, but we ordered the Fava Bean ravioli and specifically told the waiter my boyfriend was vegetarian, and there was still meat in his dish. Otherwise, food and service were fine. Just be very clear with staff about allergies or limitations. Even though they asked, and we told them, if its important to you, say it more than just . . . three times."

  • "Love the classic Old New York feel of this place. The decor and service lived up to the hype, but the food was standard. Probably not a good idea to try it during Restaurant Week!"

  • "Enjoyed the evening very much. Wonderful food and service. Very expensive but worth every penny. The cocktails were the best in the city, the pork chop was outstanding, and the toffee bread pudding was fantastic. The classy decor and solid service finished the evening with style."

  • "ambiance is great wonderful and historic bar and dining room service was excellent a bit pricey but not over the top gispacho soup was A+ as was their build your own sundae, but our two entrees were unremarkable will try again as we liked the atmosphere and hopefully our next selections will be better"

  • "As long been on our list, but first time to make. Had an early dinner in the dining room. Food was solid, if not especially memorable. Very active bar scene, quiet dining room with iconic murals. Service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely stop back for lunch or quick bite when in the area."

  • "Looked forward to our dinner here because of many recommendations. The bar area which is separate is charming and quite crowded. The restaurant is large and a bit dated but still nice. The food, very good as well as the service. The most unappealing thing (unfortunately not the servers fault) there was a couple directly in the middle of the restaurant that were treating the dinner like they were in an intimate private room! People seated into the area actually requested moving! They were the first impression you had of the restaurant as you entered! I did notice others who also entered during our dinner and lets just say if you are into people watching (not stars) you should go here otherwise find another spot or eat in the bar!"

  • "This restaurant not only serves exceptional food and yummy cocktails, the decor and ambiance is brilliant. The crab cake was delicious, the burger was OMG worthly and the cocktails washed it all down nicely. This place is a bit of a celeb hangout also! I saw Kelly Rutherford (Lily van der Woodsen - Gossip Girl) dining there. All in all a fantasic evening spent at this cool New York spot."

  • "Love the decor and the Mad Men vibe, but our sour-faced waiter definitely dampened my enjoyment of the meal. There are many fine places to have lunch in mid-town for these prices and I think they can do better. Be gracious and welcoming, not cold and dismissive! The food, while good, was extremely salty. I'd go back for a dirty martini at the bar and some great people watching. "

  • "Great concept - red banquettes, interesting murals, white table cloths; elegant yet comfortable. Servers friendly and attentive. Had the pork chop - tender, succulent and tasty. Husband had burger and fries; fries a tad soggy but still good. We love the ambiance so we keep coming back. Saw a lot of couples dining and some business groups. Nice to see that most everyone was dressed appropriately for dinner out in a classy restaurant."

  • "The aymosphere was very old fashioned and cozy. The food was delicious and well prepared and portion sizes were just right. The vest dessert of three was the cookies. I was really disappointed by our server, he was not warm or welcoming and acted strangely when I asked for vodka instead of gin im my mixed drink and he seemed to have no idea about abailable cocktails as we asked for an apple martini and he returned to the table a few moments later and said they did not serve those. The food runners were the nicest and most friendly. Good food and disappointing service."

  • "The Monkey bar is attached to the Elysee Hotel where my wife and I were spending a week away to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant was as expected."

  • "Surprisingly inexpensive according to Manhattan standards. Great waiter service, though I and a friend were there for an early dinner when the dining room is not full. The noisy bar, jammed with young-ish local business-types, is lively in the after-work hours. The dining room is divine with its Edward Sorel murals."

  • "Pleasant room with attentive service. Food is hit and miss: stick with the salads and the raw bar, both of which are excellent. Good enough for pre-theater."

  • "The small hotel setting is classic and inviting. The wall murals and booth seating are so New York! Oh, and the good is great too!"

  • "My guest was my dearest friend invited for her birthday lunch. After many years of not being to this restaurant I was recommended to give it a try under the new ownership. Both of us were delighted with the choice, great food, divine ambience and professional and courteous service. Background music so pleasurable. We loved our lunch selection of chicken paillard and the chocolate mousse desert divine. I will absolutely return."
