A word from Monkey Bar
Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

Great food, lovely ambiance. Staff is very professional, with unusually strong food knowledge, yet they are universally warm and caring. You can feel comfortable being very dressy or nice casual. Our server recommended the octopus appetizer once, saying it was delicious and not chalky like octopus normally can be. He was right -- it was divine and is now something we order every time. The pork chop is thick and beautifully-prepared. They get the little things right, like unobtrusively yet obsessively bussing the table, so all you have left at the end is your coffee cup, as it should be. They are cool about touristy-types wanting a guide to the personages portrayed in the one-of-a-kind murals, and will even give a little framed photo with names on it for people to walk around with. And I have to say, they use the thickest, nicest receipt paper in their Epson printers, instead of the thin stuff you usually get, so your check and the credit card slip exude quality and pride. It's a tiny detail, but a noticeable one -- and running a fine restaurant is all about the littlest details.

The room is fantastic. I would call it a New York treasure. It is an expensive restaurant (dinner for four at $100 a person when 2 people got hamburgers). Waiter was a little annoying, spilled water on the table, but only offer was did we want to move. Still, the ambience makes up for the rest.

Great scene and accommodating service in an intimate setting make for a great place for happy hour or cocktails. The food, however, did not live up to expectations relative to the care taken in the creation of the environment and recruiting of quality staff. The menu features a good variety of options and flavor profiles, but the dishes at our table lacked creativity and would best be described as what you'd expect from a country club kitchen. I'll go back to drink and start an evening, but would be reluctant to stay for more.

Had a great time there Saturday night. We requested (and got) a booth in the bar, better to hear the piano and enjoy the scene. The staff was wonderful and we all had a good time - staff too, I would say. The ambiance is, of course, the big draw and doesn't disappoint. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I chose Monkey Bar based on a recommendation by a colleague; a great recommendation! It was exquisite. With reservations, we were seated immediately upon arriving and browsed the extensive cocktail & wine list; the autumn inspired seasonal cocktails were amazing. The dining room ambiance was classic New York; perfect. Our server recommended the steak tartar to start and it was delectable. The rohan duck entrée was phenomenal – served with rapini and tantalizingly delicious black rice. The Monkey Bar burger was good; although not extraordinary. For desert, we had the milk chocolate mousse and beignets – both were delicious. A wonderful dining experience at iconic Monkey Bar.

My boyfriend and I went here on a date night. The food was delicious! I had the duck which was cooked beautifully and over a bed of black rice (which was one of the most delicious rices I have ever had). My boyfriend has the lamb which was also cooked beautifully. Both of our cocktails were also great! They were unique and seasonally appropriate- Spicey Pete and The Perfect 10. The restaurant had a really cool vibe and the service was good! I would definitely recommend this place!

We booked a table here for our anniversary and was not disappointed. Even though it was a Monday evening it was busy and had a great vibe. The service was excellent and we had a wonderful relaxed evening. The only minor point was the presentation of my wife's main course. She ordered the monkey bar burger which again was excellent, but the fries we're just piled on the plate which considering you eat first with your eyes was not good. It did not spoilt the evening but a little more thought in this area would be good. Would certainly eat there again and recommend it to others

But now no more. Loved this place years ago. Hadn't been since 2012 when it was still packed and delicious. On a recent Saturday night it was empty. Waiter and staff were rude to everyone--from my table to the 3 other tables that were occupied:abruptly and intrusively clearing plates and utensils in a bizarre way that nearly had them leaning their torsos in your face. Curt and distinctly icy attitudes even from the bus boy. The entire staff seems to actually take pleasure trying to throw shade on pleasure. Yelp echoes all this strangeness but I couldn't believe those reviews were legit. Such a disappointment to learn this place really is garbage now. Food was bland nothingness. And my beloved monkey bread was "accidentally" served COLD.

The service was fair at best. Our waitress promptly asked us if we wanted anything besides water and when we asked her to give us a few minutes to look at the menu she disappeared for many minutes. When she returned we ordered our lunch and she went away from the table without asking us about drinks. Some time passed before the food arrived, brought by two bus boys. When our waitress still did not return to the table we caught the eye of one of the bus boys and ordered drinks, which our waitress brought. She was always pleasant, just inattentive.
