A word from Monkey Bar
Established in 1936, Monkey Bar was returned to its former glory in 2009 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

The dining room's lush red leather banquettes and dim, attractive lighting have restored the fizzy thrill of dining in a restaurant - both attractive and cozy - and harken back to a bygone era when a gentleman never left the house without a tie and a lady always had a pair of white gloves in her purse.

Monkey Bar's menu boasts American classics alongside seasonal dishes using sustainable and organic products whenever possible.

  • "Terrible wine regardless of price. Food mediocre at the best. Very disappointing"

  • "Outstanding treat next to Hotel Elysee between Park and Madison on 54th. Great bartender! Top quality. (No photos allowed - that can be a good thing.)"

  • "Enjoyed the evening very much. Wonderful food and service. Very expensive but worth every penny. The cocktails were the best in the city, the pork chop was outstanding, and the toffee bread pudding was fantastic. The classy decor and solid service finished the evening with style."

  • "ambiance is great wonderful and historic bar and dining room service was excellent a bit pricey but not over the top gispacho soup was A+ as was their build your own sundae, but our two entrees were unremarkable will try again as we liked the atmosphere and hopefully our next selections will be better"

  • "As long been on our list, but first time to make. Had an early dinner in the dining room. Food was solid, if not especially memorable. Very active bar scene, quiet dining room with iconic murals. Service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely stop back for lunch or quick bite when in the area."

  • "Looked forward to our dinner here because of many recommendations. The bar area which is separate is charming and quite crowded. The restaurant is large and a bit dated but still nice. The food, very good as well as the service. The most unappealing thing (unfortunately not the servers fault) there was a couple directly in the middle of the restaurant that were treating the dinner like they were in an intimate private room! People seated into the area actually requested moving! They were the first impression you had of the restaurant as you entered! I did notice others who also entered during our dinner and lets just say if you are into people watching (not stars) you should go here otherwise find another spot or eat in the bar!"

  • "This restaurant not only serves exceptional food and yummy cocktails, the decor and ambiance is brilliant. The crab cake was delicious, the burger was OMG worthly and the cocktails washed it all down nicely. This place is a bit of a celeb hangout also! I saw Kelly Rutherford (Lily van der Woodsen - Gossip Girl) dining there. All in all a fantasic evening spent at this cool New York spot."

  • "Love the decor and the Mad Men vibe, but our sour-faced waiter definitely dampened my enjoyment of the meal. There are many fine places to have lunch in mid-town for these prices and I think they can do better. Be gracious and welcoming, not cold and dismissive! The food, while good, was extremely salty. I'd go back for a dirty martini at the bar and some great people watching. "

  • "Great concept - red banquettes, interesting murals, white table cloths; elegant yet comfortable. Servers friendly and attentive. Had the pork chop - tender, succulent and tasty. Husband had burger and fries; fries a tad soggy but still good. We love the ambiance so we keep coming back. Saw a lot of couples dining and some business groups. Nice to see that most everyone was dressed appropriately for dinner out in a classy restaurant."

  • "The aymosphere was very old fashioned and cozy. The food was delicious and well prepared and portion sizes were just right. The vest dessert of three was the cookies. I was really disappointed by our server, he was not warm or welcoming and acted strangely when I asked for vodka instead of gin im my mixed drink and he seemed to have no idea about abailable cocktails as we asked for an apple martini and he returned to the table a few moments later and said they did not serve those. The food runners were the nicest and most friendly. Good food and disappointing service."

  • "The Monkey bar is attached to the Elysee Hotel where my wife and I were spending a week away to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant was as expected."

  • "Surprisingly inexpensive according to Manhattan standards. Great waiter service, though I and a friend were there for an early dinner when the dining room is not full. The noisy bar, jammed with young-ish local business-types, is lively in the after-work hours. The dining room is divine with its Edward Sorel murals."

  • "Pleasant room with attentive service. Food is hit and miss: stick with the salads and the raw bar, both of which are excellent. Good enough for pre-theater."

  • "The small hotel setting is classic and inviting. The wall murals and booth seating are so New York! Oh, and the good is great too!"

  • "My guest was my dearest friend invited for her birthday lunch. After many years of not being to this restaurant I was recommended to give it a try under the new ownership. Both of us were delighted with the choice, great food, divine ambience and professional and courteous service. Background music so pleasurable. We loved our lunch selection of chicken paillard and the chocolate mousse desert divine. I will absolutely return."

  • "Had a fabulous evening at Monkey Bar. Could not fault the food, wine or the cocktails, the decor was amazing and the soft lighting and jazz soundtrack were very 'old new york'. The service was perhaps a little slow at the beginning - we waited 45 minutes before our order was taken, but then the food did come very quickly after we had ordered, so maybe taking the time before ordering is an American custom. "

  • "This was my second time here, and it was even better than I remembered it. This time was a business meal with 4 associates and every small dish and main dish was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is very old school, in a good way. You feel like you're dining in 1940's New York. I will definitely come back, it's one of my favorite New York restaurants."

  • "I felt like I was dining in a beautiful, old world spot; a classic restaurant that has settled in and become a grande dame for dining. Monkey Bar is elegant, yet comfortable. The food was promptly served and was delicious. I especially loved the wall mural. I am a huge Tennessee Williams fan and felt honored to eat near the Ellyssee Hotel, his home for 15 years."

  • "This gem of a venue fits both needs...a drink with friends with enough old world charm mixed with a modern touch, or a dining experience in the restaurant which in itself has the feel of a rich heritage, yet a modern menu, catering for all palates, and service equivalent to the old world kind. This was a great venue and lived up to expectations."

  • "My last visit to NYC was 29 years ago when this place was recommended to me by a couple of ladies who lived in New York. We had an amazing time then when they had live entertainment. Was surprised to see still open after all this time with good reviews so had to book and hope things would be the same (never a good move). Started off well with nice booth and very efficient staff. Head waiter appeared quite aloof and didn't really want to talk. Starter ok but main course of sirloin on the bone was really tough. I couldn't eat it and when female waiter removed plate told her so. Was offered something else but too late for me now. Didn't have dessert so paid an expensive bill and left."

  • "The staff was very friendly and attentive. The monkey theme is fun without being silly. The food was well presented and prepared. This is our second visit and we look forward to our next one."

  • "The Monkey Bat is pretty and quiet. The service is warm and efficient but not intrusive. Food was great. Creative Caesar with kale, perfectly cooked salmon and great veggie sides. Lamb was great with black rice. Nice for a business dinner or a special night out. Good wine list with mixed pricing."

  • "We'd been to the Monkey Bar when it re-opened years ago. I was in the neighborhood and looking on Open Table for a place to meet my daughter for dinner. We were both very happily surprised to find a beautiful room, with professional service and good food. After trying many "hot" new restaurants and not being able to hear the person next to you, it made for a relaxing dining experience to sit down, have a great cocktail, lovely food and good conversation. Prices are a bit high, but my 24 year old and I both agreed that it was a place to definitely put on our go-to list"

  • "We stayed at the Elysee and booked two dinners at the Monkey Bar. The table was perfect for our romantic dinner. The service was outstanding. The food was beautifully presented and tasted just as wonderful. We will definitely return and will tell our friends about our experience."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by the elegant quiet dining. What a refreshing experience to hear the other guests at your table. The menu was interesting and wait staff were very pleasant. We will certainly return. Two of us had the restaurant week menu and two of us ordered off the regular menu. Everyone was happy with their selection. The portions were good and not overwhelming."

  • "I'd definitely return to this charming restaurant just off the lobby of the historic Hotel Elysee. Had a wonderful skirt steak for lunch while enjoying the banquette seating and the intriguing mural spanning the wall. While trying to name the Jazz Age personalities that were featured on the mural, the server handed us a beautifully framed replica of the mural with everyone identified. It's not often that the servers in a restaurant are so attuned to the needs of its guests and it is certainly not common for the surroundings in a restaurant to trigger such lively conversation. The atmosphere was casual elegant, the service was quietly attentive, and the food was delicious."

  • "Went with three friends for Resturant Week lunch. The service was wonderful and we were not rushed at all. I did notice that others who seemed to be on a lunch hour schedule were not happy about the lack of speedy service, but for us it was a real plus. Two of us did send back our soup which was not hot and it came back hardly better. But the rest of the meal was lovely. Would definitely go back for a special occasion."

  • "If you like hospital food this is the place to go. While the food is very well cooked, it lacks any seasoning. I am not talking about under-seasoned, I am saying like hospital food. The chef needs to either taste his food before it goes out or you guys need another chef. Ambiance is actually super nice and chic, the cocktails were great albeit super expensive (even for NYC). The highlight of the evening was out waiter (Nate). He was the best thing in this place. Funny, cute, and a great waiter."

  • "I took a very important client here, in from Korea, a place that knows its beef. He ordered a steak medium rare. It came closer to well done, just barely pink. My partners and I all agreed with him it was overcooked. When he went to send it back, they warned it "could take a while," trying to dissuade him from sending it back. He asked for a NY Strip, smaller, to sped things up, and for it to be medium rare. Guess what? Not. I do give them credit for sending out a cheese course and drinks gratis, but it was embarrassing nevertheless."

  • "A friend and I enjoyed a Restaurant Week lunch. The menu choices were nice, the food delicious, and the service was excellent. We felt we were treated with respect and deference even though we were there for a 'bargain' lunch. The dining room is beautiful and the atmosphere is very old-school, making the meal a special occasion."
