Diner Reviews
  • "The only thing better than the excellent food was the superb service of our waitress, Heather. Also, the music and singing provided a very good background for our meal."

  • "Went here for weekday lunch. Ample free parking. Seated promptly -pleasant hostess. Decor quite a mixture. Fabulous shields/crests along 1 wall, unique art in terms of vintage "Italian street scene" puppets w small custom mural & 1 gorgeous Italian wall platter. Piano against a wall making entrance into main dining room too narrow- esp for a w/c Main focal wall not charming. Lovely enclosed patio visible from main dining room, but not maximized. Server polite. Slow refills & did not bring correct utensil set-up or small plates as food came out. Food OK, not memorable. Recipes from the late 60's Disappointing Clean ladies room w handicap "stall" - located in basemrnt= mobility impared have NO access to it"

  • "Top Italian food in Chicago Land ... truly reminds me of Italy ... especially Sicily. Service was not quite spot-on --- a slow start but improved with dinner flow. We brought our own red wine ($10 corkage .. reasonable for a restaurant of this quality) and purchased a Ital Chard which was quite good. Great place to go with friends and family for a beautiful relaxed evening."

  • "A just stop by dinner on the way to a downtown play turned into an outstanding dining experience. The lasagna dishes were superb and the waitress/support team equally so. Monastero's has never disappointed us."

  • "We were very unhappy with our service. We had a reservation and it took the host 15 minutes to acknowledge us. The service was incredibly slow. We sat for 20 minutes before the waiter even took drink orders. We were not checked on and waited another 15-20 minutes to order. Once food finally came out it was delicious. However, we again were not checked on. There was live music that was incredibly loud. We couldn't hear each other over the piano and soloist. We were there for a birthday and were seated at a circular table pushed together with a square table. Some of our party had their backs to the other half of the table due to this layout."

  • "Not only was the sauce, pasta, meatballs, and cannoli positively superb but the singers and their Broadway medleys made the evening such a warm and pleasant experience."

  • "How this restaurant rates so many stars is beyond comprehension. The food is completely mediocre. Prices are fair and the opera singing is a nice gimmick, but the salads were tired, the pastas were gummy, the crusting on the fish was burnt.....will not go back. "

  • "The singing was fabulous. The salad was made earlier in the day--so it wasn't old but it wasn't fresh. I had a spinach, ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese and small pasta shell main course. It was exactly as described - no spices, a tad soupy and incredibly boring. My husband had a pasta with a tomato sauce that had more spices but it was relatively mild. We were there around 6 and the crowd was primarily senior citizens so perhaps the restaurant gears the food towards an older crowd. I wouldn't go back."

  • "I drive by here and never noticed this little gem of a restaurant until recently. Many people at the restaurant, including ourselves, were celebrating a special occasion. The food was pretty good; not any better or worse than most of the Italian restaurants in the city. The portions were a little smaller than we're used to though, but it's ok. I don't understand why valet parking was required in such a small parking lot, but whatever."

  • "That was really SPECIAL occasion, not just simple eating out. Nice atmosphere , great food, piano music, friendly service , little gift from the restaurant - all made this experience unforgettable for my mom and all of us. Thanks Monastero's!"

  • "After attending a graduation ceremony at Loyola University we went to celebrate with the graduate to Monasteros. The convenience of using Open Table to facilitate the reservations helped. After our sumptuous meal which included appetizers, Soups, salad, and entrees, the graduate was treated to a delicious dessert accompanied by a beautiful "opera" song by the owner and wait staff. Very classy and memorable!"

  • "Monastero's was a surprisingly wonderful find! The building is on an unassuming corner and looks rundown from the outside but inside it is a cute restaurant with a lot of charm and wonderful food! It's just a good old-fashioned restaurant with a soup or salad included with your entree and large portions for a moderate price. The food was very authentic and tasty. The wine list was rather large and cost efficient. Adding to the charm was the piano player and singer who both entertained during the dinner. I would highly recommend stopping by Monastero's if you're in the area."

  • "My wife is an excellent Sicilian cook, so I know what southern Italian food is supposed to be like, but the food at Monastero's was only mediocre. Also they advertise having piano music on weekdays and opera singing on the weekend. We were there on a weekday, and no one touched the piano, even though we left after 8:00 PM."

  • "I decided to return to Monastero's because I have been neglecting them, not the contrary? The Monastero family are delightful , warm owners, who take great pride in their service, food and ambiance They have been in the Chicago-Lincolnwood area for decades and deserve a try. I took my wife and close friend for Valentines dinner Sat night and it could not have been better. From car hops to the bus boys, it's a refreshing experience. It is a reflection of the owners consistency of pride in making dining experience pleasurable."

  • "The food and ambiance here have always been good, but they have updated their menu ingredients and presentation. The food is even better than it has been in the past, and in the past it was very good. Good size portions as well."

I love dining at Moasteros' for romantic ocassions, anniversaries, birthdays, and just a night out with friends. Monastero's is just that good"

  • "Had not been here for years but will be back soon. Very nice, low-key and relaxing. Service was really good and food was great. One of the best minestrone soups in the city, mussels were delicious and suprise...........the pizza we ordered, thinking we were too full for entrees was great! Very fresh, hand made, great crust. Can't wait to go back and try the entrees. What a neighborhood gem......."

  • "Monastero's is our favorite neighborhood restaurant. The food is always wonderful and authentically Italian. We enjoyed the piano player too. There is always something musical going on whether it is an opera singer or piano player. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Monostero's was absolutely wonderful. Each of the 8 diners were thoroughly pleased with their meals. The food was excellent and out servers were fantastic. the piano player brought back memories of the old supper clubs when life was elegant and posh. I planned the evening for my Red Hat Christmas dinner in January and was more than pleased with everything. We all agreed it was top notch. If I was a food reviewer it would get 2 thumbs up. Thanks for making our evening so special."

  • "Everything was great: food, service, atmosphere. My only complaint is that in my reservation I mentioned that we were celebrating our 27th anniversary of our first date at THIS RESTAURANT. They did not acknowledge this at all. We had a good time anyway."

  • "Wonderful Italian dinner amid the live sounds of opera. Make sure you try their appetizer specialty, the arancini rice ball and their special desert, cannoli cake. I had the special chicken stew and my wife had delicious mussels, both excellent. The Monastero family has owned and run this place for years with attention to detail and service with family members greeting all of their customers througout the evening."

  • "Friday evening was a nice surprise. We have only come here a week nights before. This time most of the tables were full and there was live entertainment. Good piano player and vocalist playing Christmas carols. Santa also visited. None of this affected the normal great food. All and all, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening."
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "The lunch choices were good and we were mostly satisfied with our meals. I ordered the salmon lunch special with spinach and canneloni beans which the waitress recommended. Another person also ordered this dish. My salmon was too well done and had very little spinach and beans. The other person had a much nicer juicier cut of salmon. Since we ordered the same dish, it was disappointing that they were not of the same quality. The string beans that came with the salmon were OK, but I would have preferred something better, especially since there was so little spinach and canneloni beans. The service was fine."

  • "They have been around since the 60s and their staying power is definitely due to their continued commitement to their establishment and the customers. The food was fantastic with a special mention this time to the Calamari and Mussells Appetizers and the surprisingly excellent "table wine" which was a smooth Italian Red that tasted a lot more expensive than it was. The Costs are very reasonable here and you feel you are getting luxury service while not having to pay luxury prices. If this is in your neighborhood, you are remiss in not having tried it at least once. i will certainly be going back! (Oh yes, they have a piano in the main dinning room along with live music ... hard to beat that!)"
