Diner Reviews
  • "I went for dinner with two friends, and had requested that two of us get the kaiseki meal, which must be requested in advance. Our dishes were mostly quite good, very interesting and a great deal for $60 each. However, the timing of our meal with our friend, who ordered a duck ramen and a salad, was very poor. They chose to have him wait a very long time to get his salad while we ate quite a bit, and then he waited even longer for his ramen. I understand timing such disparate orders can be a challenge, but he would have preferred to have eaten and then waited for us than to sit by very hungry as we chowed down. The ramen was bland, although the noodles and duck were cooked beautifully."

  • "First you must walk up a rickety flight of stairs to get to the small dining room. We are not Japanese but we love Japanese food, especially Sukiyaki. We were surprised that we did not see any of the usual appetizers on the menu ( tempura, negimaki etc.) the waiter explained that they specialized in Japanese Comfort Food. This is what a Japanese family might eat at home. It was an adventure. The food was good, just not what we expected. For the main course we had sukiyaki. The quality of the beef was excellent. The taste was good, but not great. The desserts were creative (eg apple sauce with ricotta cheese). The service was very attentive but not hovering. Before you go, check their website to see if their menu choices are to your liking."

  • "Here's a Japanese restaurant that hasn't been Americanized. With few exceptions, you won't find Momakawa's dishes at your neighborhood sushi joint. In fact, you'll find almost no sushi at all at Momokawa. Instead, meals are cooked according to a Japanese tradition that few Americans have experienced. For adventuresome diners, Momokawa provides unusual discoveries that are difficult to duplicate elsewhere in the U.S. Nothing should upset nervous palates, but during a dinner at Momokawa, most Americans encounter new tastes and textures. • "though place is very small and you have to climb up the narrow stairs before reaching the restaurant level, you will be pleasantly surprised with the high quality food they servce. it is well known amongst Japanese and non-Japanese foodies for its shabu-shabu dish, and I highly recommend anyone to order their course meal, which is plentyful, even for people with healthy appetite. reservation a must. highly recommended."

  • "The food was average - nothing interesting. My friend and I stepped out to have a smoke and I handed them a credit card to hold in good faith, upon coming back I found out that they charged it. Our dessert didn't arrive yet and we were approached and asked to hurry up because other customers were waiting... Very strange and rather unprofessional. Go to Ootoya instead. "

  • "I went with my friend to Momokawa on a Saturday for lunch. I decided to try it because I've read recommendations of the restaurant online. It's a cute little spot in Chelsea. Not noisy and great for conversations. However, the portion of the food is inadequately small and we had to order a lot of dishes (which are also pretty pricy) just to fill our hungry stomach. The taste of their food is okay, not bad but not the best. And the most annoying thing is the unfriendly waitress who was so cold to us. I love the intimate environment of Momokawa, but was disappointed by the food and service."

  • "I enjoyed lunch with friends at Momokawa. We all had the lunch special of ramen noodles with shrimp. All three of us enjoyed and felt the spice level was perfect for the broth. We also tried the edamame, tomato with delicious salt and a chicken with avocado appetizer. All three were very tasty but the appetizer portion size was a little small. I will definitely go back."

  • "The service and food were all fine, but you get better Shabu Shabu for much cheaper in various East Village haunts. In terms of value, very overpriced for shabu shabu,"

  • "I had been several restaurant in new york, but this one is terrible ever!! My boyfriend and I went there for xmas dinner, the place was romantic and love the decor is pretty but the service was not so well and SLOW ! you had to wait for a while finally you could order your food! However, most the food were not so good and fresh plus I ordered some food they even did not have any more....so my boyfriend and I decided to leave early! Anyhow, I won't come back this place anymore but if you like to have some place for drink this place might be good ! otherwise not recommend for people ...."

  • "We were pincered by two Japanese families on the night of the 22nd (around 8:30ish). We both had the wagyu chef's menu. The appetizers were great. The miso salmon was INCREDIBLY salty. I asked my friend who recommended this place and he said it's not supposed to be. I reckon they messed it up. Shame as that's one of the main dishes... It was so obnoxiously loud. There were two Japanese families with babies who would scream and run around. The adults with them were also so loud that I couldn't hear my girlfriend right in front of me. Not once did any of the staff ask them to stop shrieking. I regret taking her here for her birthday. I've had better Japanese food, for better prices, with better ambience (EN Japanese for example)."

  • "Booked a reservation at 4:45. Upon arrival, was notified that we had to be out by 6:00...so an hour to eat? Staff was not particularly nice, food was good though (very traditional Japanese) but not great enough to warrant a repeat visit."

  • "I love hot-pot style food, and this place does make food the way I like it. The service is very attentive, and I like the fact that they have divided seats for 4 people. I really enjoy coming here and the duck nabe is one of my favorites."

  • "Momokawa is a truly genuine first class rJapanese festaurant. Especially, Washu-gyu and Shabu Shabu are excellent as fresh sashimi appetizer."

  • "First visit to this small, second floor restaurant which seems quite authentic. We did the five course tasting and honestly think it was too much food even though each dish seemed small and light as we ate it. Service team is very friendly and helpful and we certainly hope to return again."

  • "The food was amazing - authentic Japanese sukiyaki, high quality appetizers such as Pork Kakuni. Every dish was very delicious. Even though we didn't pick the more expensive Wagyu beef, the sukiyaki was the best! Although the decor is far from fancy, it's a great, hidden spot for hoodies who love Japanese food. It's like the opposite of trendy celebrity chef spots, where decor is great but serves so-so food. Also it's not too crowded. I'm glad I found this place. Would definitely go back."
