Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Mombos sever times. My meal was "perfect"!"
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "Mombo continues to be our favorite spot in Portsmouth despite the talent of other local chefs and wonderful venues. The setting is beautiful yet unassuming, the food is out of this world, and every visit is unique. Love that we can pop in for "starters" and wine before an event or have a beautiful leisurely dinner. Don't miss the scallops with cuttlefish fettuccine with sauce extraordinaire..."

  • "Mombo is your typical Portsmouth restaurant. The food is properly portioned, unlike the unrealistically oversized meals at chain restaurants. The pork chop I was served was perfectly cooked and well marinated. My wife ordered the BLT salad, she said it was very tasty. The mac and cheese to share was bland, and very oily. We were served before our main course with three different breads, all very delicious, especially the ciabatta. The house-made butter added a wonderfully tasty flavor. We were displeased with our seating, as we were sat at a very small table up against the wine room. It was almost as if they asked themselves "How can we fit another table in here even when it's already crowded?" Mombo, overall, is a decent dining experience."

  • "Absolutely outstanding in every aspect. Have eaten here with family many times last few years and have never been even slightly disappointed. A real Portsmouth gem. It's not just eating well, it's a dining experience"

  • "Great venue, terrific service, best bouillabaisse I've had."

  • "Our dinner started with an exceptionally welcoming host who told us about the history of the place, so thoughtful and casual. He handed us off to our server, who was attentive but easy going, providing great suggestions along the way. Our meal was simply outstanding, flavorful, a little inventive, cooked to perfection. We were still talking about it days afterward. Highly recommended."

  • "Rezzies were for 8 and we did not leave until 1145. There was no pressure to leave and everyone on the staff was pleasant the entire time. Not the first time we dined here and certainly not the last. We had friends with us who had never been and Mombo is now on their top 10 list."

  • "We particularly enjoyed the post and beam/elegant barn ambiance. Food was excellent and many different choices on the menu. The wait staff was very attentive. Very nice view of Prescott Park from our table by the window. Excellent ambiance, delicious food."

  • "Was looking for a place in Portsmouth NH for my wife' birthday that wasn't all sea food (she doesn't eat seafood). The food was higher end and we'll prepared. The ambiance was unique as it looked like the restaurant was a converted historical building ( I recall a picture of a old general store which it may have once been). Everyone was very pleasant and personable, I think every person on the staff said hello and asked us how we were when we were waiting for,our table. All in all it was a great dining experience."

  • "The food and service was impeccable. I travel a lot and this evening could not have gone better."

  • "Had a crab soup that would have been good if they removed the crab from the shell. Dry aged steak was ok but for $42, could have been better. Sides were unusual but ok."

  • "We eat out regularly and try to find a restaurant that's a little more special when we're attending an event (concert, play, etc). Mombo was indeed a special experience. The interior was as expected in a renovated historic home and the Russian expressionist artwork throughout a bonus. We selected specialty drinks that were exceptional and the wine list looked extensive and interesting. We were informed that there would not be any specials, but the menu offered many great choices without being overwhelming. The appetizer, dinner selections, and desserts were all exceptional and we finished every bite. Prices comparable to restaurants in Boston, and the quality, presentations, and flavors met or exceeded those found in the city."

  • "Our meal was absoluetly delicious! GREAT flavors, thoughtful preparations and perfect presentations!!! And our server, Hannah made the whole evening delightful...paced us well, allowed us our own time and was very attentive but subtly so! Just simply, a lovely evening!"

  • "Portsmouth is a town with many restaurants, and you can end up dropping a bundle on a very mediocre meal. That was decidedly not the case during our recent experience at Mombo's. Although the menu is surely pricey - starters in the $12-$16 range, for example - it was well-worth it. After our recent meal, four very fussy diners agreed that Mombo's might well be the best restaurant in town. Every bite we had was exquisite, both well-prepared and carefully presented. The tastes were both distinct and distinctive. We were looking for a special dining experience and our expectations were fulfilled."

  • "I found this restaurant through trip advisor and boy what a find. The food was delicious. Our waitress, Amanda, was a pleasure. She did not rush us and she recommended two dishes that we loved. My husband had the swordfish, which he insists was the best swordfish he's ever tasted and I had the lamb which was scrumptious. I only wished I lived closer because I'd be here every week."

  • "I am a vegan. They always make up something special for me that is out of this world, without me feeling guilty about it! They aim to please. The ambience is so nice, the staff are so friendly. The ambience is really cool! And, they have their own parking lot in Portsmouth! That's a bonus! Mombo's is the restaurant I always look forward to going to."

  • "Our first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Superlative beet salad for an appetizer, truly gorgeous on the plate (we took pictures!) The lobster bisque was simply the best I've ever eaten; couldn't be beat. Lovely decor, very quiet atmosphere, interesting cocktails. We had nothing to complain about and will return next time we're in Portsmouth."

  • "We got the impression that it may be a cultural experience, and found something unexpected. Mombo refers to an intense light within - from the lightening storms in Mozambique and not necessarily spicy, Latin food....(which we do like). This was an anniversary celebration dinner and everything was wonderful. Nice table, great friendly and interested staff - good service, just the right touch. And, the food was spectacular soup to nuts - wonderful descriptions and pairing of flavors, everything cooked to perfection. Couldn't have been better - we were tempted to let them know that it was either No. 9 Park or Mombo and we made the right decision - a great find for us and we'll be back."

  • "Despite living in the area this was my first time to Mombo. The menu offered many selections and the food was delicious. The wine list was excellent. We loved the ambience of the building and it is in a great neighborhood for strolling if you arrive in the late afternoon. The service was excellent. he whole evening was wonderful. It is not an inexpensive evening (entrees about $25-$30) but it was worth every penny."

  • "We had a reservation for 4 at peak time on a Friday night at 630, when I found out the other couple would be late due to Boston traffic . We called Mombo's and they were able to still accommodate us at 715. I loved the wine list, charcuterie appetizer and lemon fingers dessert. Would go back again. "

  • "Our dinner was excellent. Peter, our waiter gave us time to enjoy our dinner and we were never rushed. This is our third time at Mombo's and is on our go to list. An added plus is they have parking!!! Go you won't be disappointed."

  • "We chose Mombo for dinner on our only night in Portsmouth, and we are so glad! We had a delicious dinner at this romantic and historic site. The service was excellent and menu amazing. We were pretty confident it would be great when everyone we spoke to in town said we would not be disappointed."

  • "Mombo's is modern but with an old world charm. Thank you for keeping the linen tablecloths, dim lighting, ans having a modern flair without taking away from the beautiful historic setting. Wonderful Russian artwork is unusual and outstanding. Lighting is well thought-out. Food great. Setting great. This is the best restaurant in Portsmouth and best reflects the charm as well as the modern buzz of both the Historical and the up to date. Keep the prices reasonable, keep everything the same, and you will have a gem for a very long time!!"

  • "Been to Mombo several times. Never been disappointed. Love the ambiance and the food is amazing. We booked reservations, ended up sitting at the bar because we got there early and decided to stay there. Host was completely ok with that and polite. Would recommend for anyone looking for a great meal and ambiance."

  • "Dining and service here was fabulous. Elizabeth our server was informed, pleasant, and attentive. The ambiance was informal and charming. The swordfish was moist and the curry/mustard sauce delicious. The specialty breads crisp and tasty. The hot chocolate soufflé absolutely perfect. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Food and atmosphere was excellent, but wait time between first and second course was unacceptably long. To make matters worse, when asked about it, server (Tim) became defensive. No apology or explanation was given, much less any accommodation. "

  • "My husband & I were celebrating an anniversary and choice Mombo for a special night out. What a great choice! We were attracted to Mombo's because of the wonderful choices on their menu. We especially loved the Whipped Bone Marrow appetizer & the Beet Salad was very fresh. Our lamb & beef dishes were done to perfection & the presentation was outstanding. With plenty of wine selections & beautiful handmade chocolates for dessert & a fabulous waiter the evening offered everything we needed to celebrate our special day. "

  • "Mombo is a great restaurant with fantastic food in an awesome city. We had whipped bone marrow and duck poutine which was exceptional. We had braised short ribs and hanger steak for dinner which wasOver truly excellent and we would highly recommend them. Perhaps the only issue that separates this restaurant from others is the wine list. Some of the wines are grocery store staples which were grossly overpriced; i.e., Block Nine, Pinot Noir, retails at $9.99 and at Mombo was well above $40. The lack of creativity in the wine list does not support the excellence in the food, ambiance, and service. Overall, go for the food…it's very good!"
