Diner Reviews
  • "Mombo has always been one of my favorite restaurants in town and I was happy to take my parents there this past weekend while they were in town visiting for my birthday."

  • "Went during Restaurant Week - fixed menu - and had the Osso Bucco. Cooked nicely - just wish there was just a little bit more. Others had the steak and felt it was cooked to their specification and was excellent. For a fixed menu - very nice selection. Probably because it had been a very nice day - Portsmouth was busy and so was Mombo's. Noise level was a bit on the loud side. Previous visits it wasn't as loud - and would recommend it."

  • "We recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Mombo. We had the Chicken 3 Ways and the Yellowfin Tuna--both were just delicious. Service couldn't have been more pleasant--always a great evening out."

  • "Mombos stands out as superb in a town that has more restaurant seats than citizens."

  • "Arrived for our dinner a few minutes early and are table was ready for us. The staff was very friendly, attentative, professional. It was our first time at this eatery as we were referred by a friend. Everything from start to finish was excellent and in particular the food. We were a party of four and all were in agreement that we would be returning at some point this year. Highly recommend."

  • "We had a superb meal. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was lovely. Our meal was interesting and surprising and fun."

  • "I attended on Friday evening and the restaurant was very busy for restaurant week. The food was very good with nice presentations but small portions. The menu was creative which is why I chose this restaurant, not the run of the mill menu. The regular menu is also very creative and I feel this is one of the better restaurants in Portsmouth. Everything was very fresh and the waitperson was very knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "I've tried it over and over and every time I end up dissapointed that my food wasn't tasteful. They get flavor combinations wrong or the food is completely flavorless. Expensive, so they need to work on this. Also, food portions are always tiny."

  • "What a dissapointment.Bad service. Bad food, couldn't eat app and dinner was cold. Surrounding diners seem to be having the same experience. Very crowded. Don't get that,? Could not wait to get out"

  • "The experience I had here was very memorable. I enjoyed two items from the appetizer menu. The whipped bone marrow & bouliabse. Both were phenomenal and I would highly recommend them! I sat at the bar and the service was also outstanding. My coat was taken as soon as I walked in the door. A visit to Portsmouth should include a visit to Mombo!"

  • "We celebrated our 10 year anniversary and my 30th birthday at Mombo and loved every minute of it. The place was bustling and we had a 7:15 reservation. We arrive at just about 7:10 and got a great corner table almost immediately. The service was amazing, the food was divine and the cocktail (We Three Gingers) was out of sight! We will definitely be recommending this place! Thank you for helping us celebrate!"

  • "The bone marrow appetizer was amazing. The table we were placed at was a bit cramped and felt like an afterthought."

  • "Went to Mombo's on a recommendation from a good friend for my wife's birthday and was not disappointed. Received a quite table by the fireplace. As we were in town for the brew fest we selected a couple of nice microbrews they have on hand and were pleasantly surprised with the choices. The steak and seafood dishes we selected were excellent. Great service the waitress was very attentive and never felt rushed."

  • "What I love about Mombo is that it's the complete package. The food is exceptional, the service is great, and it feels comfortable enough for a casual dinner or special enough for a special occasion. We live about an hour away from Portsmouth, so we don't get there often enough. We have been to Mombo twice, and both experiences were fabulous. The food changes with the seasons, but some items (Wagu Hangar Steak, Crab-stuffed Flounder) are on the regular menu. We find the entire dining experience to be wonderful, and we know that we want to come here again...and again! Mombo also has a very gifted pastry chef who is adept at creating unusual desserts (Black Forest Creme Brulee, anyone?) and breads. Don't miss this gem of a restaurant!"

  • "the pastry chef makes breads that will bring you Momback all by itself. The pork belly appetizers and tuna bites were off the charts tasty. I had the mahi mahi for an entree. It was good but I think I might order something else next time from the outrageously varied menu. Great ambience in an old building with ample parking. Sat upstairs next to the wine closet. Interesting once, but downstairs looked more vibrant. Worth driving to Portsmouth for this gem."

  • "If you enjoy a new culinary experience then Mombo is your restaurant. The Chefs prepare your meal with flavors and tastes that you will enjoy with every bite. The ambience experience within the restaurant depends on where you are seated. Have a lively conversation with the chefs or an intimate setting by the fireplace with your wait staff helpful and friendly."

  • "We were surprised to only be able to get a reservation at 5:15 p.m. on a Saturday night, and we were the first ones in the restaurant, but it soon filled completely, even the bar. Our waitress was eager to make accommodations to the menu for us, and spoke enthusiastically of the evening's menu. From appetizer through main course, the servings were ample. The lobster bisque was the best I ever had. Each dish was unique and savory. We would definitely recommend this place to all our foodie friends."

  • "What a great place! The ambiance was just perfect for a cold winter evening in New England. The live fireplace welcomed you the minute you entered the door. The lighting was perfect like a sunset...the simple table settings... white, crisp, and clean, it is always a winner. The owners personal Russian art collection was the perfect fit for the decor. I felt like i was in a rich man's home for dinner. I kept waiting for the owner to come great me! LOL I am a foodie and have traveled the world. The food was comparable to any food at some of the finest restaurants in the world. It was cooked perfectly, impeccable timing with the serving of it. The presentation of the food itself was beautiful."

  • "The food there was fantastic!!! It has a little something for everyone. It was beautiful restaurant that we will surely be back to. If you go and it is still on the Drink Menu try the Bee's Knee's it really is just that!"

  • "Would never had chosen Mombo had we not had a gift certificate (merely due to lack of finances, but so happy we got to experience it! All of the food was excellent; service was outstanding. Moderate noise level, even given the size of the room- the tall ceilings help with that. I'm sure the wine selection/ bar is also exceptional, however my fiancé and I don't drink so I wouldn't know personally. I would definitely recommend Mombo to friends (those who can afford it, anyway)"

  • "The food was outstandingly awful. We could only get a reservation for 9pm, despite the restaurant being half full, when we arrived and still had to wait. We had such high expectations for this place. It turned out to be the worst dining experience that I've ever had."

  • "This was a gem and can't wait to go back. Our waitress, Hannah was attentive, knew the menu and made it a great experience."

  • "My husband and I both had excellent meals from the appetizers al the way to the dessert. Interesting flavors, great food combinations, appropriate portions and a unique menu."

  • "We decided to beat the Valentines rush by having dinner a few days early. We decided to eat at Mombo (as we did last year). The entire experience was terrible. I do not know what can happen in one year, but from the service to the food Mombo has lost it's game. This place won some awards, and completely lost the importance of cooking food well, and having servers and wait staff who remember what their jobs are as opposed to hiding behind curtains, in the kitchen and elsewhere mingling."

  • "The service (Brian) was amazing. He was knowledgable+friendly. He knew his stuff but didn't hesitate to ask the chefs any questions. The head+Sous chef were a wealth of information. The food, show+service were extraordinary.the fritters and crab apps were Some of the best food I've ever tasted. The entrees were good,We had the pad Thai and Flounder. We saw a new chef present an unsatisfactory entree to the head chef,He threw the meals for the table away,Sent the server over to offer a free app and round of drinks. Then he began teaching 1:1one w/the new chef how to prepare it correctly. He fixed the entrees personally+delivered them to the table+apologized.Only con was the hostess. There was 5-7open tables all night+she refused to sit us at one."

  • "On a very cold night we tried Mombo in Strawberry Banke. We weren't disappointed. The menu is creative; the esthetics are excellent, as is the service. A long serpentine bar is well integrated with the dining area yet the noise level is low. A real plus for Portsmouth, they have a decent sized parking lot. I wanted to try the charcuterie, but we had too many great choices--next time. The food has some unexpected zing, like ghost chili rubbed tuna and the bouillabaisse which is more like a chowder has a nice background heat. The dessert (turtle cheesecake) was beautiful and delicious. Recommended."

  • "The website encouraged NYE reservations: 5 - 1:00am Join us for New Years! Whether you dine early or late, be sure to make Mombo your New Year's dining destination. Sounds like they're geared up to ring in the new year, right? Wrong. From the stressed hostess who chided us for hanging our own coats, to the spaced out server "I don't even know what time it is" (which she repeated), our visit was less than welcoming. A few minutes past midnight, the chef (?) came out. We complimented him on our superb meals and he said, "Glad you liked them, now you have to go." Open until 1:00 a.m.? Not so much. Buh Bye, Mombo. You won't miss us, but we'll be sure to let everyone know to go if you want great food with a hefty serving of rudeness."
