Diner Reviews
  • "We have gone here about 5 times. Each time was memorable. Great location...worth the price."

  • "Mombo is a diamond in the ruff. My girlfriend Nancy found this restaurant on the internet while we were vacationing in New Hampshire. She read the positive reviews and wanted to try it out. The place is amazing. The Hospitality is great, the ambiance is what we enjoyed and the food was spectacular. The food presentation was outstanding and Tom who was the host was very pleasant and social to talk with. We will definitely come back when we vacation again in New Hampshire."

  • "Food was excellent and the tastes were innovative. Service was excellent as well. But, there were some issues we would not expect from such a high end restaurant. One of our party ordered a pork chop off the menu that was served overcooked and had a leathery texture. The restaurant was quick to take it back and serve a new portion but you would on expect it from such a good restaurant. Another of our party was lactose intolerant. She ordered something from the menu that the waitress told her could be provided without dairy products. They served her something without the sauces and without anything to replace the taste enhancement the sauce provided. So, it was bland and ordinary. We would have though he kitchen would have been more creative"

  • "Food quality was very good; of the three main entrees, one arrived luke warm in temperature. Pricey in comparison to other restaurants of similar kind."

  • "Took my husband here for his birthday. We both shared the cheese appetizer sampler, which was very good except the crackers didn't seem fresh. I got the swordfish which was excellent and my husband got the pork chop, which he enjoyed. Very nice atmosphere and would go back."

  • "Celebrated my combined birthday and retirement with my wife, sons and daughter-in-law. We had the chef's table and it felt very special. Our table, the food, service and ambiance were outstanding. We were very cozy and well looked after by the waiter and even the chef, who, we were able to watch perform, and he even came over to check on things for us and a quick chat. It all added up to a special night of great food and dining with my family and a very special celebration that I will always remember."

  • "Recently had dinner on a Saturday evening at Mombo. The valet was convenient considering there was a concert in the park across the street. The lobster bisque was very flavorful and a generous helping. My wife enjoyed the filet mignon while I had the pork chop. Both had great presentations and full of flavor. Much better than a top steak house offering of those same entrees. The pork chop was 2.5" thick, bone in, perfectly cooked and the most tender chop that I have experienced. Actually almost too much meat but every bite was flavorful. The chop was paired with purple mashed potatoes and smoky carrots and turnips. Had wine by the glass and the size of the pour met expectations and possibly above average. Great night at Mombo."

  • "We came to Portsmouth for a quick ocean visit/getaway and had been before and wanted to eat near the water, but not fried everything. Our dinner was delicious, portion sizes a little small for the money, but nobody needs heaping plates full of food these days anyway! Our server was great, hostess cheerful and accommodating. Great experience!"

  • "Mombo is always an excellent and obvious choice for us when celebrating a special occasion. The menu is creative and yet prices are not over the top."

  • "This restaurant has a cozy patio and a covered front porch where you may sit and enjoy the weather and take in some nice views of the historic district of Portsmouth. THe main part of the restaurant is open and gives you a feel for the area. Also has its own parking lot which is a big plus in this area because parking in the evening can be a challenge. Nice menu, good assortment of dishes, great wine list. Service is attentive but not hawking."

  • "The food was very, very good and the service was great. The portion size was extremely small. I have never had a filet mingeon so small. Two forkfuls and the salad was gone. We usually don't have enough room for dessert. However, since we were starving after the meal, we ordered their ice cream. It was quite tasty, but what they called 2 scoops were actually 2 tablespoons. The cappuccino was a nice size though. They were by far the most expensive restaurant that we visited in Portsmouth. In summary , the food was very tasty, but the value was poor."

  • "This is our 4 th time at Mombo....we always enjoy our night out when we come here. Everything is worth the choice. Plus...and it's a big plus..they have parking. We drive right to a beautiful location and know we can park our car and not waste time looking for a spot. The food is always delicious and the service is perfect."

  • "This is the second year in a row that we have had dinner at Mombo while visiting New Hampshire and we absolutely love it. We will certainly return next summer hopefully more than once. The atmosphere, the service, and the food were excellent... Beautiful place for a couple if they are looking for a romantic evening..."

  • "Gorgeous old building with a very well kept historic look. Fantastic service throughout. Dinner was impeccable as the entree (lamb in my case) was unlike any I'd have with a layering of unique and complementary flavors. A work of art. For me, when I wake up the next morning thinking about the incredible meal from the night before, that's the best sign of an experience to remember. This was the case at Mombo."

  • "First visit met with friends vacationing from CA saw high marks from previous diners. Walked in excited with the look and feel, drinks very good lived the Moscow Mule, salads and lobster bisque to notch, entrees poor late in delivery due to backed up kitchen my friend and I had brined pork chop both asked for slightly pink center both arrived over cooked and tough, veggies too much smoke flavor a theme on other plates as well my sons short rib ok but smoky my wife's fish was good but not anything to scream about"

  • "We are local residents who had heard of Mombo for a long time, but had not dined there. The two of us chose to share two starters and one entree in order to maximize the flavor experience. The service, presentation and creative food led to an exceptionally enjoyable dining experience!"

  • "This is my second time at Mombo and they definitely do not disappoint! The food was fantastic, we enjoyed every bite from appetizers to dessert! The service was top notch. Our appetizers were slightly delayed (which we honestly didn't even notice) and they offered us each a free glass of wine as an apology. We will definitely return. Highly recommended!"

  • "We have been to Mombos sever times. My meal was "perfect"!"

  • "Mombo continues to be our favorite spot in Portsmouth despite the talent of other local chefs and wonderful venues. The setting is beautiful yet unassuming, the food is out of this world, and every visit is unique. Love that we can pop in for "starters" and wine before an event or have a beautiful leisurely dinner. Don't miss the scallops with cuttlefish fettuccine with sauce extraordinaire..."

  • "Mombo is your typical Portsmouth restaurant. The food is properly portioned, unlike the unrealistically oversized meals at chain restaurants. The pork chop I was served was perfectly cooked and well marinated. My wife ordered the BLT salad, she said it was very tasty. The mac and cheese to share was bland, and very oily. We were served before our main course with three different breads, all very delicious, especially the ciabatta. The house-made butter added a wonderfully tasty flavor. We were displeased with our seating, as we were sat at a very small table up against the wine room. It was almost as if they asked themselves "How can we fit another table in here even when it's already crowded?" Mombo, overall, is a decent dining experience."

  • "Rezzies were for 8 and we did not leave until 1145. There was no pressure to leave and everyone on the staff was pleasant the entire time. Not the first time we dined here and certainly not the last. We had friends with us who had never been and Mombo is now on their top 10 list."

  • "We particularly enjoyed the post and beam/elegant barn ambiance. Food was excellent and many different choices on the menu. The wait staff was very attentive. Very nice view of Prescott Park from our table by the window. Excellent ambiance, delicious food."

  • "Our dinner started with an exceptionally welcoming host who told us about the history of the place, so thoughtful and casual. He handed us off to our server, who was attentive but easy going, providing great suggestions along the way. Our meal was simply outstanding, flavorful, a little inventive, cooked to perfection. We were still talking about it days afterward. Highly recommended."

  • "Was looking for a place in Portsmouth NH for my wife' birthday that wasn't all sea food (she doesn't eat seafood). The food was higher end and we'll prepared. The ambiance was unique as it looked like the restaurant was a converted historical building ( I recall a picture of a old general store which it may have once been). Everyone was very pleasant and personable, I think every person on the staff said hello and asked us how we were when we were waiting for,our table. All in all it was a great dining experience."

  • "We eat out regularly and try to find a restaurant that's a little more special when we're attending an event (concert, play, etc). Mombo was indeed a special experience. The interior was as expected in a renovated historic home and the Russian expressionist artwork throughout a bonus. We selected specialty drinks that were exceptional and the wine list looked extensive and interesting. We were informed that there would not be any specials, but the menu offered many great choices without being overwhelming. The appetizer, dinner selections, and desserts were all exceptional and we finished every bite. Prices comparable to restaurants in Boston, and the quality, presentations, and flavors met or exceeded those found in the city."

  • "Had a crab soup that would have been good if they removed the crab from the shell. Dry aged steak was ok but for $42, could have been better. Sides were unusual but ok."

  • "Our meal was absoluetly delicious! GREAT flavors, thoughtful preparations and perfect presentations!!! And our server, Hannah made the whole evening delightful...paced us well, allowed us our own time and was very attentive but subtly so! Just simply, a lovely evening!"
