We were excited to try one of the most highly rated restaurants in Portsmouth. I chose exotic for a try at a watermelon salad with pop-rocks... yes, pop-rocks from when we were kids....it was distinctly underwhelming. My main coarse was as well. We chose a curiously hearlded bottle of wine from a "lost case"...again, underwhelmed. There are so many other restaurants to try in Portsm't we will try others, although Mombo is a beautiful location on Strawberry Banke.

This was our first visit to Mombo, but it will not be our last. The menu was interesting, with some new takes on old favorites and some really interesting combinations. The staff was very helpful and attentive. The restaurant is in what was once a neighborhood store at Strawbery Banke, and the reconstruction for restaurant use was thoughtful, retaining much of the original character. Bar scene on the first floor was lively as the evening progressed, but not intrusive. We dined on the second level, which runs from front to rear over approximately half the restaurant and is open to dining and the bar below. Would definitely recommend.

Food, look & feel, menu all fantastic. Cant go wrong - wife talking about it for days. A few server snafu's - asked to make sure local beer wasn't dark, assured it wasn't, came very dark, had to be returned...uncomfortable and wasteful. Never got bread plates and only when bread was gone & appetizer cam, plates arrived ('sorry'). Unexpected at the new 'best' place in Portsmouth. No problem. Problem - HAD to arrive at 6 PM, NO other time available till 8 PM (per OpenTable). Called & asked specifically for a better time and nothing was available. Ate too early at 6 was OK because restaurant was a MUST - place absolutely empty. Scattered folks at 6:30, starting to fill at 7:00, plenty available at 7:30 and no wait @ 8 PM when we left. Jerks.

We wanted a special night for just the two of us. We went back to Mombo and it was all we hoped it would be: great ambiance, attentive service, tasty selection of foods. They put foods and spices and herbs together that one would never think of - extremely creative. If you have never been you have to try it. And being able to park at the restaurant is a huge plus in portsmouth

I was really looking forward to taking my best friend to Mombo for her birthday. She is a foodie through and through. The restaurant is beautiful, however the food was just ok. The presentation was nice but the food had no taste. It just lacked flavor. From the appetizer to the main courses. Service was great. Unfortunately I would not recommend this restaurant.

Mombo is a diamond in the ruff. My girlfriend Nancy found this restaurant on the internet while we were vacationing in New Hampshire. She read the positive reviews and wanted to try it out. The place is amazing. The Hospitality is great, the ambiance is what we enjoyed and the food was spectacular. The food presentation was outstanding and Tom who was the host was very pleasant and social to talk with. We will definitely come back when we vacation again in New Hampshire.

Food was excellent and the tastes were innovative. Service was excellent as well. But, there were some issues we would not expect from such a high end restaurant. One of our party ordered a pork chop off the menu that was served overcooked and had a leathery texture. The restaurant was quick to take it back and serve a new portion but you would on expect it from such a good restaurant. Another of our party was lactose intolerant. She ordered something from the menu that the waitress told her could be provided without dairy products. They served her something without the sauces and without anything to replace the taste enhancement the sauce provided. So, it was bland and ordinary. We would have though he kitchen would have been more creative

Celebrated my combined birthday and retirement with my wife, sons and daughter-in-law. We had the chef's table and it felt very special. Our table, the food, service and ambiance were outstanding. We were very cozy and well looked after by the waiter and even the chef, who, we were able to watch perform, and he even came over to check on things for us and a quick chat. It all added up to a special night of great food and dining with my family and a very special celebration that I will always remember.

Recently had dinner on a Saturday evening at Mombo. The valet was convenient considering there was a concert in the park across the street. The lobster bisque was very flavorful and a generous helping. My wife enjoyed the filet mignon while I had the pork chop. Both had great presentations and full of flavor. Much better than a top steak house offering of those same entrees. The pork chop was 2.5" thick, bone in, perfectly cooked and the most tender chop that I have experienced. Actually almost too much meat but every bite was flavorful. The chop was paired with purple mashed potatoes and smoky carrots and turnips. Had wine by the glass and the size of the pour met expectations and possibly above average. Great night at Mombo.

We came to Portsmouth for a quick ocean visit/getaway and had been before and wanted to eat near the water, but not fried everything. Our dinner was delicious, portion sizes a little small for the money, but nobody needs heaping plates full of food these days anyway! Our server was great, hostess cheerful and accommodating. This restaurant has a cozy patio and a covered front porch where you may sit and enjoy the weather and take in some nice views of the historic district of Portsmouth. THe main part of the restaurant is open and gives you a feel for the area. Also has its own parking lot which is a big plus in this area because parking in the evening can be a challenge. Nice menu, good assortment of dishes, great wine list. Service is attentive but not hawking.

The food was very, very good and the service was great. The portion size was extremely small. I have never had a filet mingeon so small. Two forkfuls and the salad was gone. We usually don't have enough room for dessert. However, since we were starving after the meal, we ordered their ice cream. It was quite tasty, but what they called 2 scoops were actually 2 tablespoons. The cappuccino was a nice size though. They were by far the most expensive restaurant that we visited in Portsmouth. In summary , the food was very tasty, but the value was poor.

Gorgeous old building with a very well kept historic look. Fantastic service throughout. Dinner was impeccable as the entree (lamb in my case) was unlike any I'd have with a layering of unique and complementary flavors. A work of art. For me, when I wake up the next morning thinking about the incredible meal from the night before, that's the best sign of an experience to remember. This was the case at Mombo.

Mombo continues to be our favorite spot in Portsmouth despite the talent of other local chefs and wonderful venues. The setting is beautiful yet unassuming, the food is out of this world, and every visit is unique. Love that we can pop in for "starters" and wine before an event or have a beautiful leisurely dinner. Don't miss the scallops with cuttlefish fettuccine with sauce extraordinaire...

Mombo is your typical Portsmouth restaurant. The food is properly portioned, unlike the unrealistically oversized meals at chain restaurants. The pork chop I was served was perfectly cooked and well marinated. My wife ordered the BLT salad, she said it was very tasty. The mac and cheese to share was bland, and very oily. We were served before our main course with three different breads, all very delicious, especially the ciabatta. The house-made butter added a wonderfully tasty flavor. We were displeased with our seating, as we were sat at a very small table up against the wine room. It was almost as if they asked themselves "How can we fit another table in here even when it's already crowded?" Mombo, overall, is a decent dining experience.
