Very nicely laid out tables, great ambience. Food was really fun and excellent. The Duck breast was the best we have ever had.... we have eaten duck in France, and highly acclaimed "Peking Duck" in Beijing. Neither came close! Website accurately describes the restaurant... we picked it for a special occasion in our lives- and it did not disappoint!

We have been to Mombo several times and made sure to make a reservation during restaurant week as it is an economical way to go to one of our favorite spots. The acorn squash bisque and the mako shark appetizers were fantastic and the highlights of our meals. My husband enjoyed the pea and mint puree with his perfectly cooked lamb. The Mahi-Mahi was okay, but I doubt I would order it again. If it hadn't been the only non-meat option on the Restaurant week menu, I would have gone for something else. For dessert, we both chose the pecan pie with a fig and something puree. We love pecan pie and were anticipating it throughout the meal. Sadly, it reminded us more of a fig-newton filling than pecan pie. It was quite tasty, but the description led us both to anticipate something quite different. The hostess (Casey?) was lovely, greeting us warmly, taking our coats, checking in during the meal. Our waiter Ryan could have used some lessons from her. He seemed a bit unfamiliar with the menu and commented to us more than once that it was really busy. When we finished our main courses, he took our plates and told us dessert would be out shortly and walked away before we could inquire about coffee or tea. We did manage to track him down and order both. The Chamomile lavender tea was fantastic. Overall, we know we will be back, but it wasn't the night we expected.

The food was good but there was not enough food for the price they charge, Some of our meals were excellent and others were under par, i.e., the Mahi mahi (extremely small, thin piece of fish and blackened until it was dry. Some of The dessert portions were extremely small and some of the main ingredients were barely included (i.e. carrot cake creme brule) and pear desserts. Service was excellent. Some meals were not served at a proper temperature from the kitchen.

Even though we ate off the restaurant week menu the food was outstanding. Our waitress, Amanda, was welcoming as well as friendly. She made sure everything was good throughout each course and even discussed her favorite dishes of the menu. It was a nice atmosphere and the building itself was unique. Will definitely be coming back.

We loved our dining experience at Mombo. Cozy, chic atmosphere reminded me of a mini White Barn Inn. Wait staff was superb. Menu is creative and nicely presented. The chicken entree was the best at our table. Lots of great flavors and unusual preparations. I loved the smoking maple dijon sauce on the duck "Monte Cristo" - very cool watching the smoke float out of the bottle - and added a wonderful dimension to the dish. House made bread was nice, but the bread served with the steak tartar and mussels reminded me of supermarket bread. A simple fix that would make a big difference! Elegant and sophisticated floral arrangements were a beautiful touch.

We have dined at Mombo's a few times. Usually with a better experience than this time. Everything was very good to excellent except the food. Went with just appetizers and started with a charcuterie. Description was for bread, cheeses, and meats. We did not get what was expected. Instead of "meats" it was 4 pates; "cheeses" consisted of 2 small slices; and there was a mustard and 3 other "relishes". When it says meats I expect actual meat; and cheese is more than 2 slices. Followed by tuna bites. Nothing to be wowed over. Then had the mussels. My wife had one and couldn't eat another. Over spiced and extremely dry. Desserts were ok. We will go back but it will be a while.

The duck was incredible. The best I have ever eaten. Great beet salad, too. The filet mignon with anchovie sauce was sent back by the person in my party who ordered it. It made the meat taste like spoiled fish...also, that item was incredibly overpriced. They were very accommodating, however, by preparing the filet in a different manner.

I come to Portsmouth for an annual fall visit and we always return to Mombo. The atmosphere is cosy and the place has a lot of energy. The menu is not for somebody looking for a burger and fries but for those that want to try a new "food experience" as the menu is very creative. We ventured out of our comfort zone and were not disappointed. Great night. Thanks Mombo.

The menu descriptions made the mouth of this foodie water in anticipation. How disappointing. The highly touted bone marrow appetizer brought to mind the tv commercial tagline - where's the marrow? The Star of of the plate was overshadowed by an infusion of roasted garlic along side roasted vegetables and an overly sweet gastrique. Two out of four entrées hit the mark - chicken prepared three ways and hanger steak. The failures: Duck breast was fatty and over seasoned with pepper. Seared yellow fin tuna was sent back because it was threaded with fatty sinews. The plate was also dry, despite the description that it would come with a a sesame peanut sauce and wasabi honey aioli. Perhaps it was the kitchen expeditor's night off?

From the moment we stepped through the front door my husband and I found the service to be impeccable. We sat at a table, although there is also a beautiful bar, half of which is open to the kitchen itself. Next time we will sit at the bar and watch food being prepared for a lively experience. The ambiance is a combination of "polished" and "rustic" with attention to every detail. Even the outdoor waiting area with a fire pit was welcoming. There are some unique items on the menu but also some great options for those who prefer "middle of the road" cuisine. Some might think their prices are high, but we think it was worth every penny and then some. Best Portsmouth experience we've had in a long time.

We were excited to try one of the most highly rated restaurants in Portsmouth. I chose exotic for a try at a watermelon salad with pop-rocks... yes, pop-rocks from when we were kids....it was distinctly underwhelming. My main coarse was as well. We chose a curiously hearlded bottle of wine from a "lost case"...again, underwhelmed. There are so many other restaurants to try in Portsm't we will try others, although Mombo is a beautiful location on Strawberry Banke.

This was our first visit to Mombo, but it will not be our last. The menu was interesting, with some new takes on old favorites and some really interesting combinations. The staff was very helpful and attentive. The restaurant is in what was once a neighborhood store at Strawbery Banke, and the reconstruction for restaurant use was thoughtful, retaining much of the original character. Bar scene on the first floor was lively as the evening progressed, but not intrusive. We dined on the second level, which runs from front to rear over approximately half the restaurant and is open to dining and the bar below. Would definitely recommend.

Food, look & feel, menu all fantastic. Cant go wrong - wife talking about it for days. A few server snafu's - asked to make sure local beer wasn't dark, assured it wasn't, came very dark, had to be returned...uncomfortable and wasteful. Never got bread plates and only when bread was gone & appetizer cam, plates arrived ('sorry'). Unexpected at the new 'best' place in Portsmouth. No problem. Problem - HAD to arrive at 6 PM, NO other time available till 8 PM (per OpenTable). Called & asked specifically for a better time and nothing was available. Ate too early at 6 was OK because restaurant was a MUST - place absolutely empty. Scattered folks at 6:30, starting to fill at 7:00, plenty available at 7:30 and no wait @ 8 PM when we left. Jerks.

Food was excellent and the tastes were innovative. Service was excellent as well. But, there were some issues we would not expect from such a high end restaurant. One of our party ordered a pork chop off the menu that was served overcooked and had a leathery texture. The restaurant was quick to take it back and serve a new portion but you would on expect it from such a good restaurant. Another of our party was lactose intolerant. She ordered something from the menu that the waitress told her could be provided without dairy products. They served her something without the sauces and without anything to replace the taste enhancement the sauce provided. So, it was bland and ordinary. We would have though he kitchen would have been more creative
