A word from Molyvos
A Livanos' family creation, Molyvos is the closest you can get to Greece in New York City. Critics agree that Molyvos serves perhaps the finest example of Greek cuisine in New York, and beyond. People from around the world have discovered that Molyvos serves the true foods and wines of Greece, along with a large dose of the country’s warm and lively spirit. Molyvos’ menu is built upon the home-style cooking of Greece using authentic recipes, classical cooking techniques and superior ingredients. The wine list, under the keen direction of Kamal Kouiri, is unique for its depth and breadth of excellent Greek labels and small producers from the Mediterranean whose wine deserves to be enjoyed. Molyvos also boasts a carefully selected Pre and Post-theatre menu that perfectly accompanies an evening of entertainment.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We made 10:30pm reservations and arrived 10minutes late. We were told when we walked in that the kitchen was about to close and we had to order in 5minutes. We were also told to order drink fast as bar was also closing. Why take late reservations unless you are going to allow your customers to enjoy a meal in a normal timeframe."

  • "Lunch for 3 at noon, 2 arrived on time and placed orders, 3rd person arrived later but food order was placed at same time as others. Staff was informed that we had theater tickets for 2:00. Nevertheless food arrived after 1:15, despite many requests to wait staff. What a disappointment! Obviously we had to rush through our lunch. We'd eaten here many times before, always enjoyed ourselves, and never encountered such poor service. And worse, received very defensive and sullen response from management, who offered no apology, accepted no responsibility for the delay, nor made any attempt to rectify our concerns. One would have expected a warmer and more understanding attitude, and an offer to compensate us in some way."

  • "The food was delicious and the restaurant has one of the best selections of Greek wines I've ever seen."

  • "Molyvos has great broiled octopus, fabulous seafood salad. We greatly enjoyed our meal here at our favorite GREEK restaurant."

  • "How does a restaurant charge more without an apparent price increase? By eliminating items from the "dinner special" menu, forcing you to 'go ala carte' at 25% or more. Also making previous 'complimentary' bread spreads ala carte ($), so bread now cost $8.00 if you want to dress it up. This winter dinner cost $120.00 for two, this week it was $150.00."

  • "Portions are smaller now but food is well prepared. This is my reliable, go-to place that normally has seats at the last minute since it is large. Very friendly spot! Bar drinks are good and food favorites are lavraki fish, octopus, sardines and moussaka."

  • "The service was great and the food was delicious. My guest felt that the filet of sole was the best he ever had. I am still thinking about the lemonade!"

  • "This is a NYC classic. one of the most well-known Greek restaurants in Manhattan For good reason to. The service is attentive. The crowd is elegant; the place is grand and island feel, perfect date spot or a nice dinner. The octopus was outrageous, and the Jumbo shrimp sublime. Ended the meal with the best Bogatsa I’ve ever had and a cup of Greek coffee. Without a doubt, it's one of the best restaurants NYC has to offer."

  • "My first visit, lunch with a friend visiting from Los Angeles. Terrific food and very professional waiter. Right across the street from my office, I can't wait to return."

  • "Used to like it a lot. Didn't understand why it was empty when we arrived. Understood when we left. Waiters are not doing their jobs. One who was idly gossiping with another two feet from me refused to answer a question about the menu. Food was overlooked and under seasoned. The well-reviewed Clay Pot lamb tasted like bad cholent. Was seeing a play so couldn't take comfort in the large oozo menu. Unless you can, find another Greek restaurant. There are many terrific ones."

  • "Have eaten at Molyvos many times and can count on its great quality food and service. Shared ample and delicious three spreads and spanakopita for lunch with a friend pre City Center production and enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks!"

  • "With all the tourists roaming about, it can be hard to find a nice place in Midtown. Molyvos leaves the city just outside and succeeds with friendly waiters, nice atmosphere and good food."

  • "Dinner was good. The spinach pie was delicious and the Lavraki special was very good. I wasn't crazy about their baklava which is densely rolled into a cylinder but overall the evening was fine."

  • "Nothing was a disappointment. I come here often and recommend it for its solid menu and service. I stayed over 2.5 hours with friends and was waited on the entire time with the same hospitality--no rushing us out after we'd eaten."

  • "We have dined at Molyvos a number of times, and the story is always the same. The food is always great, best upmarket greek food you will find. I have taken friends there and they always love the food. However, service is always mediocre for the price you are paying. At best the waiters are indifferent, at worst positively surly. When the restaurant is busy the service is also slow. It is such a shame as it is a beautiful space, centrally located with excellent food, but they really need to work on their service, to the point where I now rarely go there. My husband regularly entertains clients and they could get so much more business from him if they sorted this out."

  • "This is the second time I and two good friends have celebrated a birthday here. The food is ok. For these prices, I would rather go to a French restaurant. My friend who had a nirthday loves tge food. The prawn dish I had was good. We had the same server we had last year. She is one of the best servers I have had. She has a way anout her that is low key, sincere, and terrific. She has short dark hair. look for her."

  • "We dined here pre-theater and had selected this restaurant mostly for its cuisine and perfect location. But it far exceeded our expectations. Unlike many other theater-area restaurants, this one was not loud and rushed. Rather, it is a beautiful dining room with first-rate service staff who know their foods and wines and perfectly attended to our every need. All the dishes we tried were among the best. Fish is a real specialty here, and they are very direct on the menu about informing guests about their fresh fish offerings, including exactly where they were caught. We were even invited to view the whole fish on ice to see how fresh they were, and we could have picked the specific fish if we wanted to."

  • "Molyvos is a long time favorite. Since we do not get into town very often as we live in the southwest, it is special to reconnect. Lamb Shank falls off the bone and the entree size grilled octopus is wonderful."

  • "the Ouzo Flamed Haloumi cheese, while good, was three ridicullously small pieces... the stuffed cabbage was rather flavorless and was smothered in a yogurt sauce which did not provide for a nice presentation...it also was too small to be listed as an entree... should be featured as an appetizer"

  • "It was good for a quiet business lunch., in a nice decor with good service. The menu was not appealing enough so we went for the fresh fish, but that was very pricey and cooked ok, but not tasty enough to bring raves. So all in all, nothing special, but nothing specific to complain about, just the price."

  • "We shared a humus with the fabulous basket of pita they put on each table, then we both had the chefs special soft shell crab. Yes one crab on a mound of mushrooms and onions, beautifully cooked. The waiter was very helpful since we were not familiar with the vast majority of the all greek wine list. He found us a dry white from a french grape. A very pleasant dinner and lovely service."

  • "I have been to Molyvos three times, the most recent visit last week. My memory of the food was outstanding from the first two visits almost ten years ago. However, this last visit, everything was mediocre and disappointing. The pasta was soggy and the seafood did not taste very fresh. It is an expensive restaurant, and one would expect higher quality food."

  • "We have been here a few times before and it's been good but this time was even better. Four of us shared 3 appetizers Greek salad, octopus, and grilled eggplant. Two of us had the prawns with artichokes, one had chicken and the fourth had grilled striped bass. Everything was excellent. We just made it to "Cabaret" with not one moment to spare. We will definitely return."

  • "We eat frequently at Molyvos, and although we have our favorite dishes we also like to try menu items we've never had before. This is a place that has never disappointed us and always leaves us in a good mood on the way to the theater."

  • "We've been going to Molyvos since it opened. Food/service was always consistently outstanding for years. This was not the case during our last visit. Bread stale, appetizers & entrees served lukewarm instead of hot, whole fish had very fishy smell...as never before. Waiter gruff and rushed. The place appears to have become a tourist trap...less that mediocre food, robotic service. So disappointed! Sadly. we won't be going back."

  • "I've been going to Molyvos for years - at least 8 - and I have yet to be disappointed with the food! Not one bad experience to tell of. Just recently I tried the Sunday brunch and it was fantastic! You can't get a better classic Greek salad anywhere, trust me. Some of my favorites are the trio of spreads/dips, Lahano dolmades, and meatballs. Sounds like the same thing you could sample at any Greek restaurant, but when I tell you I've been miserable eating these items elsewhere and no one else stacks up, I hope you take my word for it!"

  • "I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE TIMELINESS OF OUR SEATING . THE DECOR AND AMBIENCE WAS QUITE CONVIVIAL AND THE FOOD WAS EXCEPTIONAL. WE WILL RETURN AT OUR NEXT VISIT TO NYC."

  • "Life abounds here through Greek food so lovingly prepared. I have been here on several occasions to try to work my way through every items on the menu. While there are many ways to start the meal why not start with fire...a saganaki ablaze and then drizzled with a lemon cream. Then begin your own food adventure. Each dish is an understated elegance of earth's bounty...amethyst eggplant and ruby tomatoes, potatoes and lemons and olives sensationally scented with thyme and dill and fennel and cinnamon. And you will leave euphoric, well-fed and waiting for the next time you can return to this food and its celebration of life!"

  • "Service was very attentive and respectful. The music was rather loud. We had the saganaki, the Cabbage Rolls, (entre) and the Grilled Eggplant (entrée). The wine selection by the glass (greek) was 10$. However the saganaki was very tiny and the butter/lemon sauce was not good. Expensive for food amount. The entrees were the same..fancy but little. We were still hungry. We made it up with the bread (pita bread toasted with olive oil)"
