Late Night Find
I went to dinner here with my son
and my husband. it was her first time and we were pleasantly surprised to find the interior decor very relaxin. The hallway was nice and dimly lit as the we were led to the main dining area. we were asked to take our shoes off and taken to our table. at first glance it looks like our table is the traditional Japanese tabe were you have to sit on the floor. we were pleasantly surprised to find that the tables were actually deeply rooted and dug from the floor. Neat! the food was great and the green tea was wonderful. a bit on the pricey side though...will iI come back? Definitely."

I recommend Mokutanya for dinner
but not for lunch. The yakitori is really good, but the bento boxes and ramen are just average."
Dined on 2/20/2014
Mokutanya is consistently
delicious for dinner. Every dish I have tried there from the wonderful appetizers, to the fantastic meats, to the scrumptious desserts, has been outstanding. I have not been there for lunch, but there is another menu that does not include the fantastic, smoky grilled meats, but does include ramen and salads. This place is particularly fantastic if you are trying to stay away from carbs. My only complaint is that the bathroom is uni-sex and often dirty later in the evenings."

This was my second visit to
Mokutanya and the service was better than my first visit. The host was very friendly and helpful and our waitress was competent and checked on our needs regularly. My only complaint is that they were a bit skimpy on their happy hour specials. We ordered 3 dozen $1 oysters. The first dozen were decent... relatively good size. In the second dozen that arrived, there were a couple of oysters that were so small that it was practically nonexistent. I'm not sure why they would serve an oyster that's been shriveled up to their customers. I had to send it back. The 3rd dozen were on the small side as well. Overall, this is a good restaurant for the ambiance and experience, but food portions are small."
Dined on 2/17/2014
Their Yakitori are full of flavor.
Tried Wagyu Beef, Kamo (duck breast), Butabara (pork belly), Bacon wrapped asparagus, chicken thigh topped with wasabe paste and spicy mayonnaise. You can't go wrong with any of them! Tried their Tonkotsu and Spicy Beef ramen as well, loved the flavors of the their broth."

I absolutely love this place. Best
place for the perfect date night to set the mood right."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We have been going to this place
for quite sometime now. Love their yakitori - wagyu beef and pork belly in particular. They have good ramen. Another fave of mine is their chicken karaage. The place is nice with impressive glass dividers. Ambiance is great with dim lights and not so loud music. Truly a gem."
Dined on 2/8/2014
I have been there few times. Food
and service were good as usual. Noise level was disturbing as the people next to our table were uncontrollably loud! Their wagyu beef is good."
Dined on 12/31/2013
Very cool ambience and good food,
get ready to fold your feet and take shoes off. The spicy beef ramen is yummmmmmy"
Dined on 12/30/2013
We do not mind to pay more for
good food but it is kind of disappointed. Somestuffs taste just ok and the bill are way more expensive than Japanese sushi and still feel hungry after meal."
Dined on 12/25/2013
Our group of 5, including a
relative spending a lay-over at the SF Airport, had a delightful lunch at this cute, little room. The food was scrumptious and well prepared. Many of the menu choices were items on skewers, which were varied and tasty, but my favorites were the soft-shell crab salad and the monkfish liver, which were true delights. Though there were few other diners for a late lunch on the holiday, the wait staff were uniformly charming and the waitress was able to recall our dishes without making notes! The traditional, low bench seating fit the character of the room. Don't be put off by its location in a small shopping center. This was a good discovery, and we'll return and recommend it to friends."
Dined on 12/25/2013
From the outside, you'd never
guess the inside is so elegant. The food is great, the atmosphere is really nice with a feeling of privacy from the glass dividers. I liked the idea of sitting on the floor with the footwell. Overall a really nice experience especially on a holiday."
Dined on 12/25/2013
The service is good and foods are
great. I think it is little bit over priced since the location is not so nice."
Dined on 11/30/2013
This place has some interesting
game yakitori, including crocodile. We stuck with the standards and this place was good. I think it's made better by the fact they have a ton of sake to choose from. It was halloween week so the staff was dressed up in costume and definitely had some cuites to boot. The portions are small and you can end up with a pretty large bill or going out for a second dinner if you didn't want to pay for the additional sticks."
Dined on 10/26/2013
I came here with a relative
visiting from out of town. Atmosphere is dim lighting, with semi private booths. You have to take your shoes off before entering your booth. Seating is low so you have to climb down and climb out of our seat. I had a dress on so it was a bit awkward. Waitstaff and hostesses were attentive. Food was delicious but portions were small and pricey. Your bill will get very expensive quickly. Not really great for kids."
Dined on 9/27/2013
This is the second time we ate at
the restaurant. It was as nice as the first time and we plan to come back next time we're in the area."
Dined on 9/14/2013
being in the corner of a strip
plaza makes it look cheap, but nonetheless the food and ambiance made up for it when you forget where you're at."
Dined on 8/31/2013
It is our first visit at this
restaurant. Atmosphere was nice, sit in your own area, separated by glass, you can hear other people, so it isn't secluded, but enough that you wouldn't notice if you weren't looking around. We order some skewers, Beef Tataki, chicken Karaage and Spice Beef Ramen. Overall the Skewer was good: The Beef Tataki is over priced (4 paper thin slices for $14), The ckicken Karaage was kind a dry and it looks on the dark brown side (it looks like the frying oil has not been changed for a while). The spicy beef ramen is good but over priced at $15 and we had to wait for about 10 minutes before we get the extra bowls to share the ramen after serveral requests.."
Dined on 9/8/2013
Some of the skewers were good,
some meh. Good spot to have a conversation."

Authentic Yakitori in Burlingame,
who would have thought. Lived in Japan for years and appreciate how hard it is to find authentic Japanese food. This place delivers. Try Sunday nights when they have half off on large format Sake bottles, great deal"

For a first few times I went
Mokutanya I always got 1 or 2 complaints. Sometimes, they gave me a wrong bill or put too many orders on them. Sometimes service was slow or food a bit too hard and too salty but this time I took my girl friend there and it went really well. The great thing about my last visit was the host waited on us herself. She is so great and sweet."
Dined on 8/23/2013
I'm glad I read the reviews as the
restaurant is located in a shabby looking strip mall, but once inside you will quickly forget its external appearance; it is beautiful. Lighting is very low so transition from bright outside can be problematic. Also the traditional Japanese seating will be difficult for those with hip, knee or spine problems, so be sure to let the restaurant know in advance if you need regular seating. This was our son's 21st birthday. They were delighted to help us celebrate with a candle on his cake. The one person cakes as well as the food was delicious. Service was a little slow, but not too annoying. Prepare to take your time for a wonderful evening."
Dined on 8/12/2013
food is incredible, best chicken
wing ever. design and ambiance is incredible."
Dined on 8/9/2013
It took us a while to get adjusted
to the dim lighting inside the restaurant when entering from the bright sun outside. We were extra careful not fall into the hole under the table when approaching the as we couldn't quite see where the hole was. The floor and the hole were both black. The hole was too deep either, making it hard not to kick your friend's legs across. Kind of embarrassing when we all wore shorts in the summer. Food was fine, and service was great though."

Awesome food, outrageous sake
prices, talking at least 300-400%"
Dined on 8/3/2013
Great service and tasty Wagyu
Beef. May is amazing host. So welcoming and it's her service that brings you back."
Dined on 7/26/2013
Great food, especially if you want
to try something different. Going back on a Wed/Thurs next time to try exotic meats!"
Dined on 7/27/2013
Was meeting a friend for dinner
and booked this place based on some great reviews. I was pretty disappointed when I pulled up because the location is far from appealing. Once inside, it was a whole different story. Each table is surrounded by 3 walls of glass, so it's effortless to maintain a conversation while still feeling like you're surrounded by people. Superb place for a date night. We ordered a whole bunch of different items to try. Dishes came out rather quickly and the service was impeccable. I definitely recommend the duck breast; absolutely amazing. Will definitely be coming back here again and again."
Dined on 6/4/2013
We just love this place. Terrific
Spicy Beef Ramen and an endless supply of tasty yakitori nibbles. Particularly love the Kurobuta Sausage, Butabara, Marinated wagyu beef, Spicy Tsukune, Chicken Thigh Topped with wasabi paste...I guess you get the point...it is all pretty good. They also do a nice job with take out. Definitely recommend!"

A friend and I came here for the
first time, during a layover at SFO Airport. It was great since this place is about 5 minutes away from the airport. We were pleasantly surprised by the great variety of Yakitori Skewers and other finger foods. We started off with oysters which was fresh and a great deal. The pork belly skewer was one of our favorites as well as the Grilled Unagi (which I believe is a special, so if they have it -- order it!) Asides from the food, the ambiance of this place was great. I would recommend it for date nights and small groups. It is Japanese style seating and dim lighting-- which adds to the ambiance and experience. The service was absolutely great! Thank you!"
Dined on 7/16/2013
We stumbled upon this place one
day in a rush. It was right next to my friend's house so we decided to go there to save some time. To our surprise, the food was great, the servers were friendly and we've been back several times since. We always recommend this place to out of town friends when they visit. Everyone loves it."
Dined on 7/21/2013
The host (May) really makes you
feel welcome here. The service was a bit behind this time around, but the food is definitely worth the wait."
Dined on 7/12/2013
If you like skewers, here is the
place to go! Also, there are exotic meats here that you can try too if you are up for some exploring. Anyways, I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and shoyu ramen. They were both pretty good and the ramen was chewy, which is to my liking. I ordered many skewers including the alligator meat, but the alligator meat kind of just reminds me of chicken. It is just worth a try. The sweet potato, yam, and duck breast were my favorites for the skewers."
Dined on 7/5/2013
It was my first time there. I love
the atmosphere. It was a little dark, but romantic. That's what makes this place different from other Japanese restaurants. I loved the wagyu beef and the British Columbia fresh raw oysters. Must try! But the desserts are quite pricey compared to the prices on the other items. Tried the tiramisu. It was more like a cake than the authentic tiramisu I have tried before elsewhere. But it is a good place to try something different."
Dined on 7/5/2013
If you like Yakitori (skewered
grilled meats) this place will blow your mind."
Dined on 5/5/2013
We made last minute lunch
reservations and they were able to accommodate us. There were several other parties there, surprised it wasn't more crowded. Several choices on the menu for lunch, lots on the appetizer menu, however prices weren't always listed. Wait time was kind of long, mostly because the bento boxes came out WAY before the ramen did. Mom was almost done with her bento and the ramen hadn't come out yet. All in all a fine experience, mostly because of the ambience, really liked the "private" /glassed dining room and tatami seating."

Mokutanya is a great find in
Burlingame. If you're looking for a fun night out for good food and a unique dining experience, this is the place. Their yakitori skewer style bites are fun and flavorful. Their meatball bites and salmon bites are a must try. If you're feeling adventurous, Mokutanya offers exotic bites such as alligator, kangaroo and iguana. To end the evening, try any of their fine pastries. I recommend their match green tea cheesecake. It's a perfect balance of sweet and refreshing. A great palete pleaser to end the evening."
Dined on 6/11/2013
Took some friends there who had
just returned from Japan. Food was good but it was noisy. Hip place with a modern feel.. It was still very fun."
Dined on 6/8/2013
The food was excellent, but be
prepared that it takes awhile. However, I told the waitress that I have a plane to catch, and the food came out super quick!"
Dined on 6/9/2013
This place looks like a place you
would find the the city. Dark walls, candle lit , drop down seating and energizing music. We have been coming to this restaurant many times and the staff treats us like gold!! They have very interesting selections of exotic meats and seafood that you can't find elsewhere ie iguana, peacock, razorback clams, cocoon, venison. Just let them know how you like the pace of service and how well done you want it cooked and all will be fantastic!! They are also open late which is good to know because everything else around this area closes down at 10pm"
